Rebirth of the Thief Who Roamed The World

The world’s largest VRMMO, Conviction, was almost like a second world for humanity. It had integrated itself into the real world’s economy, with both corporations and individuals seeking their fortunes through the game.

In this game, Nie Yan prided himself on his Level 180 Thief. He could barely be considered among the top experts in the game. Though, that was the only thing he could take pride in. He was penniless and unable to advance in life; a situation he was forced into by the enemy of his father. If it weren’t for the little money he made by selling off items in Conviction, he would’ve barely been able to eat. In the end, he chose to settle his matters once and for all. He assassinated his father’s enemy. He lay dying shortly after being shot in the pursuit.

However, that wasn’t the end of his story. Instead, he awoke moments later to find that he had reincarnated into his past self. Armed with his experience and knowledge of future events, he sets out to live his life anew.

I have been really enjoying this. Not usually a fan of VRMMO novels, but this one has done it very well. It includes enough about the outside world to make it actually important to the novel rather than like most others use RL as an escape from grinding and for romance purposes. The slow translation speed is prop the only really annoying part of this story.

This series is not for everyone. Everything the main character does once he's back in the past makes sense once you think about it but it makes him also look like a mary sue type character. The Game world he's in will soon become apart of their world's economy and it was how he made his living in the future that's no more, so all his knowledge of the game and his ability at it makes sense. But it makes him look like a mary sue. On top of that,... more>> his main motivation is to prevent himself and his family from getting screwed over this time and to ruin those who messed with him in the last timeline. So it looks like we're going to get a lot of preparation chapters before getting to alot of the meat. <<less

I was reading other reviews after I consolidated my opinion.

Yes I noticed that when the author was talking about the skill bar I was thinking "umm what? Is there a hotkey for that?" The VR is a bit sketchy and it can be cliche' but grammar is good but obviously not great. I do like the story and where it is going it reminds me of shura's wrath a bit. I believe the story has potential but I think the MC needs to be dragged down a bit more but... more>> the game is still in the early stages and the late stage will probably be vastly different than the MC's predictions. <<less

I read this expecting a cool/fun novel but all I get is basically just draggy grinding with the thickest plot armor, fake emotions and discombobulated world building. Add to that the personality of the all characters feels so fake and I can't relate to any emotion in it. When MC cry, it looks s*upid. When MC talks about his romance, I'm cringing all over. When MC is nervous and scared, I can't relate at all, there's plot armor everywhere anyway so there's no need to take his situations seriously, instead... more>> whenever MC acting like he's scared or in trouble, he looks pretentious asf. Basically, Mad snail's writing had something in it that makes it hard to empathize with the Characters. At best they're unrelatable and at worse they're cringe. Only read it when you're feeling really desperate and had nothing to read. <<less

I mostly play thieves and assassins in RPGs, so I was pretty interested in this. And I liked it, for a while.

The reason I dropped it isn't that it was silly (tho it was) or that it had plot holes (it did) or that it constantly retconned (it did) or that the setting was irrational (it was) or that the romance was cloying (it was) or that the MC had thick plot armor (he did) or that the MC was too overpowered (I like that).

It was because, despite being OP,... more>> the MC struggled too much. It was always one step forward, one step back. He'd frequently lose almost everything he'd worked on—in that sense, anyone saying things are too easy for him is on something—even though it'd still serve as a launchpad for the next arc. Finding it frustrating, I looked up spoilers and found out about the ending, which ended any enthusiasm remaining.

Spoiler

According to spoilers, things heat up with his enemies outside of the game and he eventually gets near-fatally injured. As a result, he quits the game for several years and everyone who kept playing is ahead of him. The end.

[collapse]

BTW, repeat after me. Having "a setting" is not the same as having "world-building." A setting is a basic, world-building is advanced. You probably mean "the setting" not "the world-building." <<less

Full of inconsistencies,

I especially hate how the MC has legendary equipment, pieces of Devine book, future knowledge and 10+ years of experience but his fatty friend becomes better than him in a lot of instances simply because of that fairy.

A single fairy gives more buffs than all of mc's skills and equipments combined.

If you are looking for a super in-depth, plot heavy novel with a complicated plot line, this is not the novel for you.

While I do admit that this novel doesn't have a unique or complicated plot, I still believe it is a nice read.

If you are in between readings and need something light hearted and easy-going I would definitely suggest reading this novel. The MC is level headed and unbelievably OP, so there's no need to worry for anything super heart wrenching because he always comes out on top. The... more>> world building is decent as well, albeit not the best.

However, I did only give is four stars. The female lead is fairly one-note and doesn't have much of a personality, so if your here for the romance I would suggest you leave. The ending also seemed rushed, so don't expect anything drawn out. There are a couple of other things but all in all it was a pretty nice read. <<less

Honestly, it's quite good. This is actually my first VRMMO novel. Character are likeable to say the least and the story is quite good but not perfect. But, I would like to mention future readers that the last several chapters is a waste of time. Why? Because I think it ruins the good ending. <--- This is my opinion. The author should have stop.. ... more>>
Spoiler

.... when the MC recovers from a shot and lives together with his beloved girlfriend. BUT, the story continues by saying that MC goes back in the game after recovery, however, his friends and guild are now way stronger than him. It's been several years since then. But, I think the continuation of this is about MC going back to being strong again and prove to those people in the game that he's back. But, I didn't continue after that and just end it there.

So, it's up to you if you want to go past that certain chapter but just keep my advice in case. <<less

To start off, I'm only okay when it comes to gaming novels because I feel they are a bit too repetitive. It's either constant questing or constant raiding, then item reveal. Rinse and repeat. I'm actually looking to see if the author does a good job with the real life parts of the MC. I'm estimating that 95% of the novel is about the MC doing quests and 5% doing pvp and real life events.

MC has experienced many unjust events to his life and is reborn to the past to... more>> play a VR game and to alter any bad endings to his real life. It was entertaining in the beginning to see him get stronger than the new players but it eventually gets boring as it becomes too repetitive. He's always questing so you just need to replace certain names and locations and different loots and there you have most of the novel. When POV changes to the the real world, I think the author did a pretty good job with it so I find myself skimming most chapters and looking forward to see how his life outside of the game develops. Unfortunately, those are far and few between.

In my opinion, this novel is for people who like to watch streamers play games, so they would most likely enjoy reading someone play a game. <<less

The main draw of this story for me is the cycle the author has. Some people would call it repetitive but I liked the whole get stronger with new plot armor to beat random new enemy loop. Kind of weird that the mmo is only online half the day, but it allows the rl story to progress. I didnt find the rl portions too annoying, nor the love interest annoying which I usually do. Overall a good read if you like the reincarnator Cn style. Its based on western culture... more>> which is a plus for me, and the nationalism isnt overbearing like in some novels (Overgeared) <<less

This novel is my favorite out of all mad snail's novels.

The MMORPG in this novel is nothing new compared to others, but I liked how the MC lead his guildmates and the war is so exciting.

Actually, I got hooked more by their real-life story rather than the game.

It's solid 5 stars for the first half of the story, for the last quarter I just skipped most of the game part cause there are so many contradictions that kinda annoy me and just focus on the real-life part.

The story is definitely is not a masterpiece or something, but I like it. Yeah, it has many loopholes, no nutrition, but it keeps me binge reading it and that's already enough.

It basically tells the story of Nie Yam who suffered a lot in the past life and got his 2nd chance from rebirth and re-do his life through the VR game of Conviction. He got the loyal brotherhood, got his woman and love of his life, save & help his parent, revenge the enemy, creating legends and become winner... more>> of life.

Pro

  • The MC is cautious, loyal (to his bro & woman), generous and charismatic.
  • The pace is good, and keeps me wanted to read it all the time
  • Happy ending
Con

  • yeah many loopholes in the story (why he suddenly become strong after rebirth in the lack of body nutrition, the gold calculation in the game, the lack of game developer initiatives, some quest forgotten, why he does not revive Jebiah, unreasonable timeline, and so on), but I like the MC always win in the end (hehe, silly me)

"Reincarnated as a high schooler playing WOW"

Overall I really liked this series, it has very noticeable faults but leaves a good impression. I never found myself deeply immersed but wanted to keep reading due to the fun I was having,

The MC is cool, maybe typical but I felt it was done well. Lots of the supporting cast is done well and only suffers from slight ballooning, I liked the FL (and have memorized how her b**bs look since it was brought up 50 times). The world borrows from popular... more>> MMO's so it's easy to understand. A simple change, having the MMO take place at night is ingenious and allows for us to have more out of game interactions. None of this is revolutionary but they all add to the story.

What's done wrong is very noticeable. The villains are on cartoonish levels and most have the reasoning of a 13yr old. Sometimes the MC will have conditions on him that make it impossible to die (so you know he can't). The author's writing style frequently repeats information and uses the same phrases over and over. He also constantly changes scope which was jarring till I just stopped caring. Chinese chauvinism, if you consider that a fault (Some of it was wack). Though the s*x scenes were pretty well done ngl.

My final judgement would be to call this a time-burner novel. It's a fun read and never once was I bored but I would recommend other tighter written stories. On an unrelate note, I feel the author VASTLY underestimates the competency of MMO players. <<less

ok so. This novel although it does have some plot holes and the author does forget the "stats" he has given to the characters, this novel was still a very fun read. Sure it doesn't make sense that guild's have thousands of players, but was it fun envisioning huge armies shoot FireBall at one another, or thief's managing to get behind enemy line and assassinate the support teams. Hell yea it was (at least for me it was) did the novel have good world building, well the author sure tried.... more>> He gave in depth back story's to a lot of the mobs/npc's/bosses/and even to items. I personally really liked this, so if your knew to this story just give it a chance who knows this might end up being one of your new favorite novels if anything else you have something to pass your time with while you wait for a new chapter in another novel. <<less

Was a lil sad when this ended. The worldbuilding is wonderfully immense and only sloppy a few times. With the benefit of foresight, ML's journey is smoother than most but still with enough exciting hardships for him to overcome. Also factors in the butterfly effect and when things develop beyond his known experience. I kind of wanna know about the life of his second-in-command whose management savvy make it possible for ML to go gallivanting around.

I really liked the premise and a lot of the early writing felt really satisfying, but I think later developments really lost me. It tried to do a lot of things, but I think this series mostly appeals to people who like seeing protagonists become unrivaled and are willing to bear with a really long read.

A Chinese "2nd Chance" story that kicked off in a way that could have easily led down any avenue. Be it a revenge thriller or a romance drama. But I guess if it wasn't a VRMMO, with good money making, I probably wouldn't have read it. Especially since this author can barely write charming character interactions. But at least the story doesn't take too long to ramp up to some of the more exciting BAM fights, raids and numerous Guild Wars with pretty overbearing full loot PvP.

However a lot of... more>> these moments consist of Nie Yan using some "future knowledge" exploit, which the game devs don't seem to care about, or the spectators mindlessly singing his praises. Well even with how unbalanced the game gets once it begins to focus heavily on Factions, Mounts & Master Classes, overall I still enjoyed the experience. <<less

Re-reading it (till c153) makes me realise just how overly melodramatic this story is ALL THE TIME... Definitely another power trip fantasy which is getting really annoying lately. ?‍♂️

Re-read because I left it on hold at 325 & forgot pretty much everything that happened (I guess my standards improved lol)

Reason: Plotholes

- The main issue in this novel is plotholes. Imagine, a thief can utilize a crossbow, his crossbow can deal 300 damage per shot/bolt for a surprising 5 bolts released per trigger.

... more>> - Not to mention that the crossbow deals additional damage to leather armoured units, specifically speaking, the backlines classes like mages and priests.

Input some math in that and the minimum damage is no less than 1500 health points if no interferance factors where applied to it.

- The average health for backliners are no more than 1000 health points in ch. 325.

-- Guess what, he doesn't even use his crossbow to kill the backliners. I'm outta here. <<less
