Regression Is Too Much

One day, a Tower appeared, and with it a proclamation by God that Humanity is to be judged for becoming too corrupt.

Regression…

It’s an ability so fraudulent that it doesn’t require any detailed explanation.

Yes, I also agree that it is a fraudulent ability, but…

Isn’t it too much to regress due to just a slightest injury…?

I walked into this novel expecting a light hearted comedy with a munchkin protagonist, and walked out feeling like I had read the second coming of SSS-Class su*cide Hunter (although, admittedly, SSS is still better). The 4th floor arc, which starts at chapter 82 and is still ongoing, is absolutely incredible, so I would bid all of you to keep reading until that gets translated.

So, let's start by breaking down some of the key elements of the novel.

Characters:

For the most part, the side characters in the story are fairly underwhelming,... more>> although in the most recent chapters I've been seeing a lot of promise in the development of Choi Ji-won, but we'll have to wait and see what direction the author takes it. However, the MC is simply fantastic. He is initially reduced as a foil of sorts to most infinitely/pseudo infinitely regressing MC's (i.e Kim Gongja from SSS-Class su*cide Hunter), with him, while not being a selfish and self-centered a**hole, still puts himself above everyone else, choosing not to seek out a "perfect ending" because he fears the mental strain constant regressions will put on him as well as potentially making mistakes that could lead to consequences not even his regression could save him from.
Spoiler

As the story develops, he experiences an incredibly well paced and developed growth into a messiah of sorts, and, running the SSS-Class su*cide Hunter comparison again, almost becomes like Gong-ja.

[collapse]

Power System:

Regression is Too Much has a genuinely interesting power system when it comes to the MC. Although any infinitely regressing skill is, by nature, practically undefeatable, the MC's comes with a lot of drawbacks that are not often seen. For example, in the first few chapters, the MC is so weak that he can't even venture out to kill monsters because he will get cut by blades of grass and be forced to regress. It's honestly quite absurd and is really "too much'. The skill has checkpoints of sorts as well, those being each floor of the tower, meaning that once the MC has locked onto a path for a given floor and advances to the next, there is no going back, which is great because the regression skill isn't just an end all brute force solution to every problem. This also compounds with the early consequence, being that even if he is 99% of the way through clearing a very long floor, if he gets even the slightest injury he will be forced to restart the entire floor, and the story really does drive in the mental strain this puts on him as he is forced to rely on the power more and more. The MC also gains some other skills that are very powerful, but have relatively strict conditions for the most part and are never strong enough for the MC to not need to rely on his regression to achieve the best (or at least near-best) ending.

World-building:

There isn't much to say about the world-building aspect of the story. It's pretty much a typical tower story, all things given, with a few minute but ultimately inconsequential differences. It is kinda interesting how the tower has 66 floors, but that's just a fun little easter egg (and honestly probably some sort of foreshadowing).

Plot:

All things considered so far the plot isn't anything special. The tutorial was interesting but ultimately pretty unremarkable, the same goes for the third floor which I felt was also sort of lacking. The main driving points of those two floors was the growth the MC experiences as he goes through them. The second floor is slightly more interesting but still not that great, but the fourth floor is absolutely fantastic and was what brought this novel to 5 stars for me. It's gritty, brutal, and the final method to "beat" the floor is not just pulled out of the authors ass but is actually set up very well and a keen-eyed detective might be able to find out the answer by themselves.

Overall:

This story is an absolute gem. If you enjoyed SSS-Class su*cide Hunter, Re:Zero, or any other pseudo-infinitely regressing series, do give it a try. If you haven't enjoyed any of those, give this a story a try anyway because it's good. <<less

This is a pretty good novel. The story reminds me of su*cide Hunter and how the MC uses the infromation from previous iterations and finding every secret in each floor has to offer, even minor characters who died in the other iterations or someone who does meaningless things might be one of the keys to completing the floor or that the boss monster having a deep backstory that will make you change the whole perspective of the floor. The ability of returning even by a simple injury might make you... more>> think that it isn't that bad, but MC is just a regular person, after regressing a lot of times because of a simple mistake, we can see his character changing every time, there was a time when he died while slacking off, became a mu*derer and a hero. But even after all that, he's just another ordinary person, although he might be able to endure it a couple times, but after failing a bunch of times, despair finally got him. Remember that MC is not your typical regressor, he is weak, he lacks too much information, and he has no talent, and unlike other death regressor MC he is mentally weak, he can't keep repeating trying to learn swordmanship for three whole years just to escape the first floor, if he really does that he will definitely lose sanity. He needs to use every information he got, key character's help and a bunch of secrets that lies between every corner of the floor, he is not a loner regressor, he needs every advantages he can to pass each trial and maintains his sanity, as he stated before, although he can become completely strong with his ability, the thing that he needs first and foremost is to throw away his humanity and sanity altogether, but his goal is to conquer the tower while maintaing his humanity to some extent, while still being sane.

Overall it's definitely well recommended for ppl who are tired of the typical regression stories, and currently there's a bunch of generic academy novels in NU, you might want to try this novel out.

Spoiler

Spoiler : Unlike other regression stories, the regressor typically hides the fact that he is a regressor, but after 25 chapters and regressing 10+ times, he finally decided to tell that he is a regressor to one of his close companions.

[collapse]

PS. The translations are actually good, although some chapters TL quality drop a little bit, it's still definitely a high-quality one, you can also drop a 5* in NU to support the TL. <<less

This recommendation is very simple, if you like fast-paced action, overpowered characters and hate slow character development, run away. This series is not for you.

But on the flip side, if you're a fan of character-focused, slightly comedic, slow-paced and psychological action, this novel is for you.

This series perfectly subverts the OP skill Regression by making our MC regress with the slightest injury. This leads him to tackle various issues and struggle his way up - You won't find any OP MCs in this novel. Our MC is smart, but not... more>> too smart, strong but not too strong, and it's really a story of working your way up. The novel is arguably, horrendously slow, 20 chapters in, he's still not out of the tutorial, but I love it because I really like how it sets up his system and his relationship with the cast (mainly our psycho FMC). The world feels truly thought out, and depth is given to what the side characters are doing, especially because our MC needs every bit of information he can to regress properly considering his weakness.

It's a really good novel, and I have high hopes. But don't come into this expecting fast-paced action, you will be sorely disappointed, but this story's creativity, the world-building and most importantly, character-depth, win out for me, especially with the good translation, so anyone who has a similar taste to mine, bite your teeth into this, it will not disappoint (for 20 chapters at least). <<less

I would highly recommend this story if you like the regression plot device. It's like a funnier version of ORV and it's by far the best regression novel I have read in recent times. So far the story is really good. The MC has a really unique powerset that's interesting to read about. The side characters don't feel like a plot device to further the mc's ambitions. Reading about Mc's suffering to achieve his objectives is also great fun. There is no glaring spelling issues in the translation

I've read too many regression novels and way too many regression Manwhas, and I've found that there are two key things necessary to make a great one. First, you must have an emotionally engaging protagonist. Second, you must have a fresh and interesting concept. This novel excels in both categories.

The way this synopsis leads you to believe is its a self-aware comedy, however, the author of this novel instead uses the "regress from any injury" to honestly amplify the rapidity of the emotional aspects of being a regressor. That is... more>> the common trope of "its tough, the grind is real", "I feel like I'm all alone" and "I must exploit everything". The rapidity of his regressions are faster, and therefore the speed of the development of these core ideas also occurs more. However, he's self-aware of these tropes, and actively works to prevent himself from developing the harmful aspects of these concepts, not caring about others lives and regressing whenever anything seems slightly tough. The character development is actually fire.

Give this novel a try, not only is the protagonist emotionally engaging, but the accompanying cast of characters is as well. The author really writes the female lead as having an aura of safety I can almost feel, as the protagonist continuously relies on her.

Just give this novel a try, read like 15 chapters, and you will be hooked. <<less

I must say the story managed to blow my expectations, in a good way. It follows the regressor trope but what makes it fun is that the protagonist is forced to regress with even the slightest injury. The way the novel slowly delves into the tower system and its working is also interesting.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the story and hope the release rate picks up! It's a must read!

I actually quite like this novel. I like the paving and how he struggles with keeping his sanity in tact with hiw crappy his regression ability is. I do like trying to wait until the chapters build up and he passes a floor though to read all at once.

The issue is the current sporadic translation speed makes it very hard. Sometimes it won't update for days, sometimes you'll get a random chapter and someday you'll get several in one day lol.

First of all, I f*cking love this novel. It's my favorite novel on noblemtl. I don't know why this novel is only rated a 4.2. Novels like this should be at least a 4.4.

This is an infinite regression story, which is basically a story where the MC can regress infinitely as long as the conditions are completed. Something like sss su*cide hunter, the knight who regresses eternally, and many others. So, the story follows our protagonist, Junho. He is just a college kid and then he, along with 50 other... more>> people, got transferred into a tower. He gets a regression skill but the thing is that he regresses at the slightest of damages done to him. Which you can imagine, leads to some very annoying situations, and if they don't beat all the floors, humanity is done for.

That's the basic premise. Seems very cliche right? Well, that's because it is. But, as cliche as it is, the story is very well thought out. If I have no school, I'd have finish all three hundo chaps in like three days. For me, the beauty of this novel isn't the MC getting stronger, it isn't the romance (though I love the romance a lot), it is the the character growth of the MC. This is the type of story that gets better as it goes on. It's as if the author sudden realized what direction he wanted to go. Don't let the first few arcs put you off.

As the story progresses, our MC grows a lot, he learns a lot, he goes through a lot. His mentality changes and his changes felt very realistic. He thought that he had to save everyone because he is capable of doing. As long as he can regress, he can save everyone. Even if it takes hundreds of regressions, he can do it. He felt guilty if he didn't. He knew that if he tries his absolute hardest, he can save them. But after all his experiences, this mindset changes. Especially with that old man on floor 20 or something, I fcking loved that part.

And ofc, the MC is strong. How couldn't he be? He's a f*cking regressor but he still isn't strong than fMC, Choi Jiwon. Speaking of her, she is such a good character and even better as a girlfriend. She can tell whenever the MC is going thru something and helps him out with it. She is just perfect. She's strong, caring, dependent, and everything. Paraphrasing the MC, without her, he would not be able to handle the burden of regressing.

imma rapid fire the pros and cons real fast.

Pros:

    • Good character development
    • Good fmc
    • fMC is actually very strong and very helpful unlike a lot of other novels.
    • The MC and fMC work together on a lot of the floors, more couple moments for us.
    • Couple moments.
    • Good pacing
    • good world development, I think? The term is just pretty loosely and is very subjective soooo ye.
    • You can easily know the mc's mental throughout the novel, some might not like it but I do, so it's a pro.
Cons:

    • Despite the overall good pacing, some floors take wayyyyy too long.
    • Some plot holes that I don't feel like listing.
    • Spoiler so beware, like it's way later on (chapter 300 roughly)
      Spoiler

It seems like the U.S. President and government is going to find out that our boi, Junho, has a regression trait. Since they have a special equipment. And I really don't like that. I feel like somethin bad is going to happen and they're going to threaten Jiwon somehow. Also MC is showing signs that he's on the verge of breaking. He already freak out a lot when he knew someone knows of his regression. If something happens to Jiwon or something about his regression, somethin crazy finna happened.

      [collapse]
    • need more couple moments
    • need more couple moments
    • And NEED more couple moments
Lastly, I'm not saying that the story is perfect, no story is but is it enough to make the experience worse? No, not at all. The story's pacing is bad at some parts but overall, it has relatively good pacing for how long it is. So if you want regressor cliche with an actual good story and characters, mainly Jiwon and MC, and good romance, go ahead. The romance is early too, some might say that it's a bit forced, but it aint. It's just not. It's perfect (not literally, but you get my point). <<less

Heartwarming, it is a story that focuses on the experience of regression. You can draw comparison to the like of SSS-Class su*cide Hunter, where the protagonist utilizes his knowledge to do his best for the people around him and not just to spam strength. The utilization of regression is unique—a simple prick from a grass blade will force regression. The story is not afraid to slow down and really focus on the journey the protagonist goes through, and the emotional highs and connections you feel as a result of going... more>> through with the protagonist are absolutely worth the read.

The only downside might be the translations being slow. But if you like the regression genre, this is a MUST READ in the likes of SSS-Class & Omniscent Reader. <<less

I like the novel a lot but man it doesn't update enough, and with the way the story flows reading chapter by chapter every few weeks is frustrating. I'd recommend just keeping this one on a saved list or something and coming back in a few years when it's hopefully done.

This review was posted to my private blog a while ago, so if things have changed since I dropped this novel, you can disregard it. I got annoyed all over again thinking about how good this could have been recently, though, so now I'm posting it here, too:

It's silly (both because it's an overreaction for sure, and I definitely should have expected it), but I'm really bummed about this novel suddenly swerving into a lackluster romance.

Spoiler

The female lead is on the cover - is the only person on it, even - and the MC was kind of obsessed with her from the start, but. The premise itself was so interesting!! The problems he faced and the solutions he came up with were engaging!! The other characters, too, made me want to know more about them, but no, MC is solely focused on a single person. Wasted months of his time dating her when he could have been training or progressing in the tower. You know, the things I read it for???

And before that, he ruined my enjoyment of the fourth floor by constantly thinking about how to prevent her from losing her spark or whatever. Who cares! I waited weeks for the translation to continue, so I could see how he managed to perfectly pass the floor only for him to arbitrarily make it about the FL when she wasn't even there! And it turns out she didn't even need his help!!!!

Her interest in HIM came out of nowhere and felt very forced too. Those months I mentioned? Were summarized in a few sentences. I didn't even get to see them being cute together or like. Meaningfully interact as a couple. You know, something that might convince me to root for them? Or change my mind?

The FL is cool, but the romance is, as I said, lackluster. Honestly? She 👏 could 👏 do 👏 better! It felt like the author just wanted to stir up even more emotional trauma for the MC, so he could have something else to mope about when he regressed. Ugh. I knew it would eventually have romance, so I was always going to drop it at some point. I just hoped it would be much later. 😓

Also I want it to be made clear that the romance being so terrible is not FL's fault. MC is kinda tr*sh in the beginning and weird about her always. She really could do better. I'm not even sure he sees her as a real person

outside of how she affects him?? Like. He gets mad and wants to give up on her because she's somewhat upset about not being able to save people??? Because the image of her he has in his head is this impossible to live up to ideal hero/mentor.

The author tries to have him work this out but in a really dumb way. FL has to spell it out for him and then prove to him that she's better than that ideal. All I could think while reading was, "For what? Why do you care?? He's not worth it??" He's an interesting MC, but I wouldn't want to date him Imao

[collapse]

Anyway. I'm not a big fan of romance, but I can be won over if it's done well. "Well" for me means seamlessly integrating the romance into the plot without derailing it. That isn't the case here. MC's priorities completely change. The romance and FL take over the narrative. The story literally comes to a screeching halt - for months in-universe and for far too long for the reader. And what is shown of the romance isn't even interesting.

Maybe things get better later, but I'm not willing to find out. There are a ton of four and five star reviews, but I can only in good conscience give it three. Two stars for the premise and initial execution and one star for Kang Chan. 🤟 <<less

The bad:

* The pacing is WAY TOO SLOW. Small spoiler: ... more>>
Spoiler

the tutorial lasts about 40 chapters

[collapse]

* The author seems to have an obsession with leaving no loopholesplotholes in the story, which in theory is good but in practice, it doesn't work very well bc he gives us a info dumps to prevent them from happening.

* the MC seems to always want to experiment every time he reaches a new floor so he tries different ways of completing them to see which way gives him the best reward, but this further slows down the pacing. And again, in theory this is good bc he can get the most out of each floor but in practice, it doesn't make the story more enjoyable at least for me.

* as of chapter 66, this is a mostly a solo novel. Yes MC has friends but even when they are right next to him, they don't get that much screen time, which is a pity tbh. FMC is a pretty interesting character but she barely shows up, much less talks.

If I had to compare it to something, it would be a chinese murim novel, where MC travels around the world, mostly alone, he meets people, hangs with them for a while and then goes back to traveling alone.

This makes 80% of the novel the MC talking to himself.

The good:

* I complained about the loopholes and info dumps earlier, but I admit that they are really well thought out. The way the author makes sure the MC can or cannot exploit the system is pretty well written

* the MC is pretty good and smart (maybe even too smart). His development and slowly changing views is interesting

* fMC is pretty good as well and I wish she showed up more.

* the tower and the floors aren't just "kill everything in every single floor" it is more complicated than that. Each floor seems to have a unique scenario that needs to be solved, and at the rate this is going, it seems like each floor also has a hidden scenario that further complicates the floor

* the way the tower, the players and the real world affect each other is pretty interesting and I wish we got more of that

I'll continue reading a while longer to see if it improves, it has a lot of potential but if it keeps going at this same pace, I think I'll stop

Edit: I'm now at chapter 117. This is awesome <<less

Could it be better? Sure. It could have been polished even further, adding more nuance, developing the other characters better, having the reader feel the weight of each regression rather than just summarizing it (not that I don't understand why the author did it that way). Even in its current state its a 8 out of 10, maybe even higher but more will have to be translated to be certain.

Anyways, not really much to say except go read it if the synopsis seems appealing to you. This entirely is a... more>> novel about the main character getting an otherwise insane power and him trying to utilize it to the best of his ability while trying to balance it with his mental state. <<less

I like this quite a lot, the premise is fun, the protagonist doesn't have a quality I find too much of a stretch, and while the FML (so far) is a little off the rails, nearing the point where I finish the reveal as to why comes a bit more into focus and makes the finish of this arc I guess I would call it... sort of poignant. The protagonist gets a little too sentimental about parting, as I think he should have a bit more confidence in being able... more>> to build relationships especially given his powers, but those too sort of serve as this interesting way to build a new dynamic during each time he comes back.

I think this has strong bones and could be a great novel down the road... too early to tell, but its not a bad start at all. There's a element where I think audience identity could be lost in the world building of the tower and how people react to it, so I think they need to be careful, but I think the risk could draw in more people's attention so its not like there is no pay off for doing it well.

At the moment I give it 5 stars, but due to the length of the arc, I can't honestly tell if the quality stays on par for the course. I like a lot of it. <<less

really great!

our protagonist Kim Jun-ho has the ability to regress, but he does automatically upon even a slight injury. Even with such a powerful ability like regression, in an environment like the tower, where danger is around every corner he will need to hone his skills, plan ahead, and make sure he doesn't lose himself in his countless regressions.

So, a few points I especially like:

while Jun-ho is intelligent, he isn't superhumanly so. He uses his regressions ability, his knowledge of 'tower-style' stories, and deductive reasoning to reach his conclusions... more>> and find out the secrets of each floor. I think that if you're also familiar with these types of stories, and follow the story closely, you can also reach the same conclusions.

Spoiler

I like the emotional aspect of the story very much. Jun-ho is able to regress, which terrifies him for several reasons. He wonders if every time he regress because he can't pass the floor if he is abandoning his friends to die. He is scared of succumbing to the regressor-depression syndrome, especially after regressing dozens of times, he start to view his teammates as if they're npcs of sort, because he knows exactly how they'll act. He tries really hard to make sure he will not lose himself, and his relationship with his friends and teammates is really well written, you truly feel like they care for each other.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Another interesting aspect is the humanization of the npcs. The goblins and the goblin shaman at the tutorial are not just monsters, they are very human in a sense. The tower residents on the second floor and how they're forced to live a life devoid of freewill is another interesting moral question (which also brings into question the climbers themselves, after all, aren't they climbing the tower because like the npcs they too are forced by an uncaring god?).

[collapse]

in conclusion, read this! Great novel! <<less

By far this was one of the most unexpected find I had with a novel. I expected this to be another generic story that I can use to pass time but after reaching the latest translated chapter, I can only laugh at how wrong I was. And I would like to disagree with the other comments about how this is similar to "SSS s*icide hunter" instead I would like to compare it more with the "perfect run" (if the MC is sane) (you can read this at royal road app... more>> 100% recommend) both "perfect run" and "regression is too much" focuses more on mental and emotional state of a regressor. In "regression is too much" we can see how the repetitive task affects the wellbeing of the MC. Instead of continuously regressing and letting his emotional state died out, the MC keeps looking for way to strive away from the usual emotionless regressor type. We can feel the struggle of the MC, the choices he makes and every regression feels heavy. You can see how the MC burdens himself for the better of others. Overall this was a really good find. Although not perfect, I believe this is league above than a lot of novel in this site. <<less

Feels almost a bit early to give this a 5*, but it looks promising and seems to be getting better. It's the usual regression plot but pumped up to the extreme. It isn't until the climax of the first arc that it starts to show it's hand a little bit—where it hits some very SSS-Class su*cide Hunter type notes.

It's possible that it'll become aimless due to the whole concept of climbing floor after floor in a tower, as do a lot of tower climbing novels. It might also end up... more>> going down the Mary Stu route once he gets stronger and is able to cope with his trait. I'll try to update my review in the case of either of those happening. <<less
