Reincarnated into a Game As the Hero’s Friend

Description

A modern Japanese man reincarnated into a game as Welner von Zeavert. Though he reincarnated as a noble’s son, he is neither the main character nor the hero of this world. He become someone who didn’t even appear in the game.

Plus, with only [Spearmanship] as his skill, he can’t even join the hero party to clear main story.

His small advantages are the fact that he became the hero’s friend and his father’s rather high status. He’s nothing but a supporting character of the story.

He noted the game story that he knew from his past life, used it, along with his authority and influence as a noble, to survive from demon king army.

But, without realizing it, the knowledge from his past life and his memories of the game story affected the world. He saved people that should have died and took care of events that didn’t appear in the game.

With that, he carved history of this world

This is not a story about the hero. This is a story about struggle and effort of a young noble.

Kinda early to judge but yea this is a good novel, with nice phase and world building, good story writing, everyone has personalities, and some nice war strategies from our MC.

Translator really did a great job working on this.

Just as long you can bear with MC who has wikipedia-way of explanation that can even reach several chapters, this is a good novel indeed.

This is a high quality isekai novel at the moment I wrote this. (Sorry for my poor EN)

The translation is well done. There is an interesting plot - good enough to machine translate past the translation. The story would be a 5 star if it didn't suffer from infodumpitis. Its just like diarrhea, but with explosive bouts of extraneous information that runs down the legs of the story. Large segments of chapters can be skipped because they are just history lessons or "world structure comparisons to other points of history" which have nothing to do with the here and now (and most times, the later) of the... more>> story. The writer is just showing off how knowledgeable about history and the time they spent thinking up the world. 2 stars knocked off for that. <<less

It's OK-ish. It is above average, but also not enough for me to call it good. Try a read if you enjoy the focus on how things work or reading writer's research. Might not be interesting for those who enjoy grander fantasy stories or drama.

The 'reincarnated as mob character' bit is pretty old, but instead of going in the direction of stealing/fixing hero's jobs like usual, the story focuses on the difficulties and complexities of background events in the grand fantasy story like army and logistics. An isekai mob story... more>> that actually focuses on mob activities. The concept and the storylines are decent, though execution can be a bit lacking.

Characters are dumbed down a bit to make MC looks smart. Not as painful as how many other tr*sh novels did, but still very much there. Very basic tactics and knowledge were praised. But then again, IRL Art of War was mostly basic tactics and got high praise because of how incompetent nobles/commanders were back then.

The worst part of the novel is the info dump to show the writer's research. While those did highlight the difficulties and complexities of the most mundane background event in the common stories which is the point of this story, it still gets more than a bit tiring when maybe a third or more of the writing are info dumps. The dumps are also often of middling quality/accuracy with quite a bit of artistic licensing, especially with military and noble hierarchy/culture. <<less

Interesting concept

Translator is pretty awesome

But the story info dumps in the worst way.

... more>> Example: The author can talk about flowers, the breed, when it blooms, how it works, and what's best about it then tells you it's not important and says it's the bee that pollinated the flower is important then goes off on a tangent for the bee.

That goes on for each chapter.

Another issue I have is that the characters are dry. Everyone feels like a cardboard cut out that can only praise the MC. Not even the one note personally traits Harem characters have.

The novel is incredibly dry, there so much set up for the battles and political drama but when the actual battle happens. Nothing, it falls flat.

There also the rambling of irl history comparisons with the world and story. Where alot of it is questionable dubious info and straight wrong info. Like spears and the samurai katana.

Incredibly boring novel. I don't recommend it.

I tried reading it twice and I just keep stopping at chapter 30. <<less

Honestly I was surprised to find this one, since I just randomly clicking titles. I really enjoy reading this series as it is really strikes what a war really is, be it the views, the opinions, the politics, and the war itself.

The way it presenting the prelude, the interlude, the climax, all executed with balanced proportions that it is so easy to follow. I do see some info-dump but it also have some skipped / summed up story-arcs which I see the Author tries to strike balance between world-building and... more>> skipping unimportant or over-used arcs in the story.

I also need to mention how it has only minor romance moments so far (at ch 148) but I actually find it very good because it make the story actually focusing on the story tale and not spiralling into mundane romance story like how many Isekai novels ended with. <<less

At first, I was sceptical about this story. But as I kept reading, I found that the world-building was really good and I like such stories a lot. And the translation is also really well done, so kudos to the translator too. The war strategies from the MC are also really good if one takes some time to read them a little patiently.

In short, I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind the time the author takes during the world-building process and the info dumps.

Not boring. Translation is not the best, but the story has me pretty hooked.

MC feels realistic, no ex-machina trump cards, his decisions come across as logical.

Author is really good at world building and giving descriptors that shape the MC's decision making for each event against the enemy.

The author keeps going on about how "the game" leaves out a lot of info because of useless data, and then endlessly info dumps all over the reader!

Personally, I won't be continuing with this story. IMO, it's not catchy enough to put up with being constantly thrown out of the story.

The concept of this novel is kind of neat. The MC is sort of in an upper-management position in a kingdom building novel. High enough status to influence important decisions, but still has to obey the pecking order of politics. It's a good balance. Even with the typical trope of introducing concepts from our modern world to the isekai world, it's not the type where everyone around the MC will praise him to death and the MC inflates his ego. The balance and politics is well defined.

However, there comes the... more>> actual explanations of logistics and decisions in a kingdom building novel, and this is where the novel falters. When you're a Japanese webnovel author with surface level knowledge of managing people and armies, that's what's going to get regurgitated from the protagonist. This isn't really a big deal when it's some normal JP isekai, but when it's a kingdom building-type of novel where a lot of text goes into explaining the decisions of our MC and how he's managing soldiers or dictating policies, it starts becoming a glaring issue.

This novel loves to reference Roman Empire practices, such as army formations and whatnot, but then comes the contradictions.

This is why I dropped the novel on chapter 47. It talks about managing refugees in camps. First of all, prostitution is banned not because of any moral reason of a Japanese person's sensibilities, but rather citing that stamina would decrease during the day. What's with this cope? First of all, lupanars or brothels were a common site in Roman war camps, and what about the benefits that come with getting rid of pent up desires? Such as less likelihood of assaults on woman in the camp due to the refugees being present.

You might say that I am a devil's advocate for asking why prostitution was banned, but you have to understand that even to the MC, his view on prostitution is that it's a "proper occupation." Again, if the reason was because he doesn't agree with prostitution on a moral standpoint, it would have made a lot more sense.

Again, you might be saying that this is a nitpick but this happens over and over again. There's vast oversimplifications and reasoning in dealing with war camp policies, such as "there was no crime since people were aware of the heavy punishment for it." Yeah, someone should try learning some sociology or something, I don't think that's how it works! Same thing with "depriving people of salt for a day so their mineral deficiency leads to less energy." Sorry, but chronic hyponatremia takes days or weeks to happen.

Or just in general, dealing with citing historical literature such as the Roman Empire and yet utilizing their tactics with such surface level interpretations that it's kind of crazy. I'm not even well versed in the Roman Empire, so I can't imagine what it feels like to be reading it as someone who does.

There IS a reason why a lot of isekai novels don't dive too deep into these sorts of policies and the reasons behind them. First of all, that's not the purpose or main plot point that the author wants to convey. Second of all, it's not that too interesting to listen to a historically accurate lecture about something in a world of swords and magic. Lastly, it's because the author doesn't possess the knowledge of the topic or the skill to implement it into their novel in a clever way that doesn't make it seem like an info-dump. So while I appreciate the approach that this novel takes, the deficiencies are also apparent. <<less

Came here from the manga and I enjoyed what I've seen so far

After a long time there's an isekai story that feels like more of a fantasy than an isekai. Especially since the MC is the hero's friend and is a mob character as far as the game is concerned. MC supports his friend navigate the nobility etc and I really like how they're really good friends to each other.

I actually like how there's an explanation for how the rpg elements of the game work in the context of the... more>> world. Yes the infodumps are a lot but it's interesting so I like it.

I'm enjoying it so far. Plus the manga art is great so that's fun

Man this is heavier than I thought hahaha!

Okay so, at first I thought this is going to be a more light read, but oh my gosh, the nobles politic and exposition is quite heavy. Not saying its bad, but theres alot of exposition or description since the author really, REALLY, gets into detail on how things work. And the reason for this is because of, well, politics, the slightest action could lead to big consequences. But just know this is what you're getting into.

To give you an idea of the... more>> novel vibe, im sure yall used to read story about the hero and their party adventure. But what about behind the scene? If a hero recruit a princess of a kingdom and if a hero recruit a priest from a famous church, how will that affect the kingdom and the church which the hero party member are from?

And that is the side the story is, the MC is the hero best friend who help the hero in the politic side and behind the scenes of things making sure the Hero is able to do his job without any worries.

Now if you're okay with that, then I say give it a read because It's pretty fun! One of the best things is how MC is doing everything he could in order to strengthen the people around him and staying out of radar. The former he achieved brilliantly but the latter he failed miserably hahaha, people just keep giving him job and have high expectation!

Another thing I absolutely love is how the MC think of himself as an average noble. Yeah, sure buddy, helping the kingdom, actually caring about the citizen, saving the crown prince, change the tide of war, discover traitors, and invent new groundbreaking tech all that without asking for credits? Sure buddy, you're absolutely a normal noble and no one will look at you.

Theres also this hidden friendly rivalry from the hero, see the hero has basically broken specs, he is handsome, talented, and powerful and the MC know this, so he always thought he does his best to atleast not be a burden to his hero friend. What he don't know, the hero sees him as this incredible person who seem to always know how to tackle anything so he feels he has to do his best to keep up with the MC, not only the hero but everyone around him too. I find this hilarious since only the MC doesn't realized his true worth.

The hero also have complete trust toward the MC, to the point where the MC is worry if he said something like "jump off the cliff, you'll get stronger" the hero probably reply with "okay which cliff?"

One of the review said "MC is the incarnation of suffering from success" hahaha and that is so true!

As for romance, there is romance but it comes much MUCH later, so the main selling point is the MC struggle. And if you want a bit of spoiler regarding who is the lucky heroine

Spoiler

Its the hero younger sister.

Unoriginal. Like any of the other novels featuring a SI appearing in a novel, this one also follows the same formula of its predecessors.

You will get the typical MC who acts like he will be avoiding the plot, but in under 10k words he backflips his entire being with such a drive to be included in that freaking plot that its not even funny how flimsy the MCs reasons are for wasting my time when he's just going to keep contradicting himself. Like sure, my gripe might be me nitpicking.

Before the manga came out, I read this novel, and I stopped midway for the same reason that a lot of people have complained about.

Perhaps it's the translation or it's just the author's writing style, but when I was reading this, the info dumps were so redundant, very annoying, and boring to read through the concept, and the story overall is very good. It's like if 'Kingdom' were set in a fantasy world with a completely different goal.

This novel is very tell-not-show, which is why I really enjoyed reading the... more>> manga more. I can see that they cut out a bit of the info dump and focused on the political and tactical problems, and although they sprinkle in some "useless" info dumps, somehow it works. Perhaps it's just because it's in drawing form and not writing that the tell-not-show works. <<less

Grade:

6/10 (hey, its not the worst info dump novel out there, and is quite intriguing)

TLTR:

Hey, it doesnt revolutionize the idea, but in his side it writes the relathionship of the character remarkably well, the main problem comes with the "infodumps" from the author, not the worst, but clearly noticeable, it has some good ideas, magic system and political strife, I personally like how the MC is weak, but we also never have a good way to powerscale. This novel had a decent start, the first ten chapters or so, and then quickly went downhill from there. To be brief, it's basically a soulless uplift novel, like the stuff you'd find on althistory or spacebattles though worse. The info dumps aren't even the problem with this novel, although they do get way too long at times, it's the complete lack of any character interactions, relationship development, or general character development that feels remotely meaningful. If this novel spent more time letting us get to know its main cast... more>> of characters, the info dumps wouldn't feel like such a slog. Even the main characters friendship with the hero, one of the foundations of the story, is rarely portrayed or expanded upon, they basically just say they are best friends without giving us any real reason to be convinced of it. Additionally, while the novel seems to try to avoid the main character having Wikipedia in his head like many uplift novels, it doesn't really succeed too well at it. I also dropped the novel before the romance really started, but what I saw of it wasn't inspiring. It felt like I was getting wacked on top of the head with a hammer by the author saying, "Wow aren't the MC and this girl who doesn't have much relevancy to the main story really cute together haha."

Thats not to say its completely bereft of any positive points. For one, the battle scenes are fairly well written, I enjoyed reading about the strategizing, even if a lot of it is overly convenient/convoluted. I also thought the protagonist was decent, and generally a strong point of the story, even if he was bogged down by the previously mentioned flaws. If you really enjoy kingdom building/uplift fics you might enjoy this, though even that's not a guarantee because the uplift is pretty subdued. Otherwise, it's pretty forgettable and I can't really recommend it. <<less

This is a pretty enjoyable isekai about building up forces. It falls a bit short of others in the genre but it is enjoyable to read about the MC coming up with plans, commanding troops, showing new technologies to his kingdom, and occasionally fighting demons.

Some of the strengths of this novel are competent allies, good pace for events and battles, and interesting downtime (sometimes). For competent allies, I mean that the MC is the heir to a mid-ranking noble house and has proper support and recognition from his superiors and... more>> subordinates. There are some who are jealous of the MC, but the rulers are competent enough to recognize his value and support him appropriately. He is also able to delegate tasks to intelligent subordinates. So none of the usual nonsense where the MC is the only one who can save the kingdom and everybody is getting in the way due to pettiness or incompetence. There is a steady stream of interesting events and in between those events there is some interesting world-building (and occasionally dull points but they are rare).

The big weakness is that it is a "jack of all trades, master of none". The MC is a good fighter but not the best, so he only occasionally engages in battles. The MC is important enough to make some decisions but there are other nobles who outrank him so he is usually engaged in managing small areas. As a result, there are small pieces of everything you might be interested in but nothing really stands out. The fights are all right, the politics are all right, the development stuff is all right, but nothing gets enough focus to be impressive.

Having said that, the whole thing is above average and you can read this for a while and enjoy it if you like any of the tags.

edit after chapter 178: Wow did this get painful. I will leave my score at 4 stars because it is still decent for the first 100 chapters but at this point the story is a real chore to get through. The author is way to obsessed with portraying the MC as intelligent and spends a ridiculous amount of time talking about the MC's thought process when dealing with the most trivial bullshit. It has been ages since anything interesting happened and I have no idea when something worth reading about will come up, because the author wastes entire chapters on nothing. This last one was paragraph after paragraph of the MC's internal monologue as he thinks about: "As a noble, every word and action matters. So I have to address this person like this and bow in this way. Ah, they have spoken in a suitably polite manner but not overly polite. It is important that I also speak to them politely. Oh, that five word sentence they just uttered has this other interpretation, so if I am a moron I might accidentally promise something but the author will keep pretending that this nonsense is complicated and meaningful." When he could have just wrote: "The MC picked the person up from the tea party. The other noble wanted them to commit to a political friendship but the MC was careful not to make any promises." See how easy that was? Two sentences instead of two pages. So yeah. Tons of that. It started earlier but it has really gotten bad lately. This is barely a 4 in the early chapters and now it is a low 3 for me. <<less

I really recommend this novel, the politic and world building is quite well built. The first fifty or seventy chapter may have a lot of info dump, but if you ignore it (it wasn't really that relevant to the story, just giving you a 'very clear' description) the story is very fun.

So this is going to be my first review.

So far I have read up to chapter 15 so my review is only relevant till that chapter.

Let's start.

... more>> This seems to be a good novel with nice phase and world building.

Story writing can be considered as above average. Characters do not feel bland and seems to have personalities.

I don't know about before but translator is currently editing and proofreading the novel. S/he has done it up to chapter 15 till now so I have stopped reading after reaching that chapter. I will wait for some time.

Overall, translator has done some seriously good job.

I really love this story. It's the only one I've found that actually sticks to their protagonist being a Mob Protagonist, in that he isn't OP, doesn't have a harem, is chosen, or is the driving force of the story.

Werner is your average Japanese man who got reincarnated into a game he used to play. It's a really common story type. But Werner is a likeable MC, who is competent and skilled and uses his advantages, but is quite clearly limited in what he can do alone.

Werner is not the... more>> one who will defeat the bosses, it's Mazel, the actual protagonist, who does that stuff. Werner is enjoyable because it's like seeing the perspective of that one helpful character in a game, the one who gives you advice, items, your next objective, and maybe even appears in some crucial fights, but is just that: a supporting character.

Another thing I really enjoyed, was that the other characters feel smart. They feel competent. We have a competent Prince, the nobles have their own reasonable goals instead of just being greedy idiots for the sake of being greedy (well, there are some s*upid characters, but they are not the majority). Another bonus is that there's no harem,
Spoiler

and there is no "will they, won't they" between Werner and the FL, though she appears later in the story than you would expect

[collapse]

There is one big negative, and is the infodumps about history the author does. These are constant and ruin the pacing. I don't find too big an issue with it, and you can just skip them, but I felt the need to point it out. <<less

MY THOUGHTS SO FAR - WILL UPDATE WHEN CAUGHT UP

I'm honestly quite fond of this novel so far, yes the info dumps are extremely annoying with how long they are, and irrelevant to the story, but I really enjoy trivia so it's interesting, I just wish it had more relevance to the story. I greatly appreciate the translators adding a skip to the info dump. I truly feel sorry that they have to translate the whole dump, major props to them!

I think the reason for the info dumps is... more>> word count, the author might get paid per word count, or the chapters have to meet a specific word count before their published on the web and the author might be trying to get as many chapters out as possible.

Disregarding the info dumps, the story is quite interesting and I think it's well written, I like the MC a lot and his friends are developing their own unique characteristics so far and it's not a power-trip/OP protagonist. He's also not a mentally weak/self loathing protagonist, he's not the best looking, and he understands that, but it only bothers him as much as it would anyone else. Whether that's going to make him "dense" to romance or not, I'll have to wait and see, if there even is romance, he's already avoided one "option" so far. It doesn't seem like he's necessarily dense to it, but currently his focus is on more relevant and critical things. I'm looking forward to how it develops. <<less
