Chen Yan travels between worlds, ending up becoming an honorable prince in a medieval fantasy world. Yet this world was not quite as simple as he thought. Witches with magical powers abound, and fearsome wars between churches and kingdoms rage throughout the land.

Roland, a prince regarded as hopeless by his own father and assigned to the worst fief, spends his time developing a poor and backward town into a strong and modern city, while fighting against his siblings for the throne and absolute control over the kingdom. Join Roland as he befriends and allies with witches and, through fighting and even farming, pushes back invaders coming from the realm of evil.

The first time I read this novel, I was only able to read the first chapter before putting it on pause, however I feel both regret and joy - regret in having not continued reading, but joy in having eventually come back and giving the series another chance. The story is quite interesting to read because the MC is forced to completely use his brains as well as experience as a Mechanical Engineer in his past life in order to survive and develop his territory, what with seemingly only a... more>> select few people (mostly women) are capable of unleashing an incredible power (not the MC). I very much like the kingdom building aspect of this novel, as it's very interesting to read about how the MC is able to develop his territory using the power of witches to aid him, however I will admit that I find the scope of his knowledge on so many aspects (particularly his knowledge on military weaponry and equipment) a bit difficult to believe, but nonetheless it is quite an enjoyable read. Not only that but the characters are quite well written and developed, and the story still has a lot of mysteries that are yet to be uncovered, which similarly makes you want to read more. Highly recommended. <<less

It's pretty good story for me, very interesting.

I like fantasy story which include magics and for me at least, I think author successfully combine magic + old & a bit advanced world. Unlike other chinese novels too, MC didn't start massacre and become bloodthirsty beast right after MC transferred to another world, but this MC still keep his sanity and won't kill unless needed, at least until the last chapter I read. Or like in other chinese novel which MC started with weak, timid, good natured MC, but once become... more>> JUST A BIT stonger, instantly become bloodthirsty beast that started massacring everywhere, whenever, without reason just like a disgusting villain - I'm talking about brain dead chu feng from MGA of course.

Although yeah, there's some strange things like MC become KNOW IT ALL dude instantly after he reincarnated, when if he's really like that before he died, he should already become a billionaire that goes around in super car covered in diamond and he won't need to work till he dead much since he has all it needs to be a leader. But well, story doesn't have to be logical, when there's magic, there will be no logic needed. And that's precisely why I read illogical and magical story, because logic can easily be found IRL while illogical and magical things could only be found in stories.

*Thanks to translator for going back on track again! <<less

My favorite series of all the ones I'm reading right now. The majority of the events take place in an isolated backwater, particularly in the beginning, so the world-building can happen comparatively slowly, which is a great advantage with reading in a setting such as this. It doesn't have unexplained but familiar game elements but leans more realistic (for values of realism that include magic) nor does it have an omnipotent bugged main character, rather he's about as killable as any royal, which is to say, somewhat difficult but not... more>> because of omnipotence. His main abilities are knowledge from his previous life as an engineer, and perhaps more, someone who grew up in the modern era, and the resources he has in his current life as a royal. The other characters have their own motivations and personalities.

My only complaints regard the handling of the church.

Spoiler

The reader isn't shown the good side of the church and it does far too much evil. I don't really mind the relative evil or good of the church, I just don't buy that something that is that blatant with as many information leaks as it potentially has (because of escaping witches and what not) would be able to possess that level of overt power. Especially since every witch is ultimately someone's daughter, and there are several who still accept their child as their child after she becomes a witch.. I'm not saying that they need to be any less evil (they're after all motivated by the most evil of phrases, "The ends justify the means") just that the reader should be shown a little more of why the faithful are so faithful. Standing up against monsters is not enough, after all, humans are too greedy to see such a thing as a benefit when it is actually happening far off. At least, in the long run. Plus, with all the starvation and what not it can hardly be said that the church is doing enough to overcome what should be seen as strong negatives and suspicious behaviors, such as the existence of the various pills and a superhuman army.

Don't let the chinese tag fool you, this novel is pretty much city management alongside character interaction. The MC isn't needlessly arrogant nor being overly dense. This follows a person transported into a medieval world where things aren't as simple as it seems. Villians aren't needlessly black as they have a reason to doing things and not just because they are "evil". Recommend giving it a try though the MC knowledge is kinda cheaty.

This series is really good. Its a step away from the usual Shounen/Xianxia (and far superior in my opinion). The series has performed great in both believably and plot interest (Something that other generic shounens tend to fail with)

Aside from that this has probably been the first time my science classes has been proven useful outside of school.

I have seen a lot of great review but I must say that I was not convinced at first. The swapping of personality is way too quick or at least could have been explained with the: OMG he was a genius all along and was deceiving us from the start that everybody is thinking rn. I feel that assuming it would have been better for the story but it's only my opinion. The story is logical, the pace is good, but the first "fillers" are quite lacking compared to chap 100+. The intrigue is great with the church even if it feel a little forced sometime. The character development is quit good nonetheless. What really got me hooked is that the feeling I got in a few chapters. I read a lot of novels but the only time I got this feeling is when I was reading books from robin hobb (and I was like 10 younger).

Spoiler

The scene on the tower with lightening is really oppressing and the situation unexpected. It really got me hooked.

[collapse]

The only regret I have is that the progression of the story is quite slow and that a lot of my questions will not be answered before a long time. Give it a try!

I am now totally addicted to this novel. Great pace, excellent domestic and military development. To top it all off, an excellent backstory of feudal scheming and conspiracies. The characters are all very personable and well thought out. Definitely looking forward and seeing how the plot unfold. I just hope it doesn't go sour and drag on certain events for 5-6 chapters.

This is one of the best Novels I have read, and one of the few I have kept in track with Raws (including Cultivation Chat Group, Ze Tian Jie, Five Way Heaven).

This reads much like western novels, where a persons reincartion actually matters. MC uses modern knowledge to slowly transform the world. Writing shows the deep research author has done to write the book.

Just created an account to rate this, although there are novels with similar settings, I think this one takes the cake, it's really good paced and it has memorable characters, plus it's interesting to see how the MC mixes the otherworldly magical stuff with its scientific counterparts. It's been an extremely enjoyable read so far and I hope the author keeps the quality constant. Definitely recommended.

A very unique soul migration storyline. Unlike most soul migration stories, the MC will have some OP cheat skill out of no where. However, in this story, the MC was formerly was a mechanical engineer. So his knowledge of all sorts of mechanized inventions makes sense in a medieval era. I'm glad that the MC is not the typical guy into powering up and fighting off all the standard bullies. Instead, the MC is all about trying to fix his current situation into a more positive manner via hard work,... more>> his mechanical engineering knowledge, and his dedication into creating a equal place where witches will not be hunted. It's a pretty fascinating storyline on how the MC will use his knowledge to get by in this time period, and how he can make use of the witches and their unique skills. <<less

I read novels very frequently and most of that time I'm not very impressed, so I give them ratings only in my mind and rarely one gets above 4. For me, 5 must be a perfect piece of art. This one is.

I don't generally compare two different novel, but if I were to compare it with overlord (since the MC isn't a dumb, naive) I would say this one is better. MC here is like an ideal king with an intellectual, modern mindset who was a mechanical engineer in his... more>> previous life on earth. Story is one of the best too. Character compliment the story and vise-versa.

Some people here are criticizing it either for reasons which would disappoint only them, individually or reasons which are not directly related to this novel. I will not see you as having narrow point of view, but request you to think about a scenario where a person is reading it for the first time and has a slightly different perspective than you. <<less

The cover and title didn't represent how good this novel is. The kingdom building is contrasted a lot and the politic between royalty isn't shallow either. It was more like the "Fight over the throne" for now instead of "Release that witch". I believe if author can keep making the kingdom building interesting even further later like "Rakuin no manshou", this novel will be among the top notch.

I always like the MC transported to another world and he's a monarch and he wants to rebuild his kingdom but I don't get his logic on this one why create a gun? If you got witches with powers? I mean even the hunter said that the gun he invented is a game changer and don't want it to spread. Also he's weak AF to boot what if he got shot by his sister or brother's assassin? That MC is not thinking straight.

If I were the MC I will experiment... more>> with that gun mechanic and make the bullets from the witches power like a gun that can fire a fast and small fireball so that even if the gun stolen no one will know how it work because even the gun powder is not yet invented and only used for fireworks and everyone hates witches so that gun is practically useless to anyone rather than the MC and his witches. <<less

Mechanical engineer dies in the real world only to be reincarnated as a prince in near medieval times - a time where witch persecution is going on.

The positives:

1. World building - CN novels seems utterly confused about world building. Most of them, specially the xianxia where every other character is more genius and every city is larger than the previous one. So there is no overarching arc to carry the story forward. This one tries to clarify the world structure early and even introduces a mystery which first 100 about... more>> the world itself. It touches upon the mystery every 20-30 chapters slowly adding to it. 2. Storytelling - Instead of following the MC all time (apart from minuscule time away for villain plots), this one dedicates some part of the story to other characters, main and side both. 3. The science stuff - Unlike the "science" stuff in Warlock of the Magus World which relies on the AI, it does try to include some elemental science stuff and the translator tries his best to include examples in the footnotes, which btw is amazing. Obviously because this is a story and a fantasy one at that not everything can be explained logically, specially things like "why there was no cement before MC arrived" etc so suspension of disbelief is required. Negative:

There are some parts of the story which somehow tries to be like Game of Thrones, where a character is revealed but gets killed quickly and its quicker than the random bully in a cultivation novel. The problem is the character doesn't have a build up and killing off doesn't have impact, it feels like cheap filler. <<less

Loved it! If I had to describe it succinctly I'd say it's Don't Starve meets Game of Thrones. It's not as sophisticated as GRRM's story but it's got the intrigue and the politics and the world building and winter monsters! MC and side characters are introduced and grown well too.

This is... better then what I expected. Much better in fact. The MC does not fit any of the traditional sterotypes that you would find in a web novel of this type... and that is quite refreshing.

I was pleasantly supprised by how enjoyable this series has been to read. I picked it up and 50 chapters later I realized that I had read the entire morning away. If you are wondering if you should pick this series up the answer is somewhere between "yes" and "hell yes".

I really liked the story so far that I even read the raws painstakingly with google translate. I confess that I don't like too many girls in a story where they would be come a part of the mc's harem but this surprisingly have a very good plot. So far I don't find the girls annoying and it isn't to the point where I could say it really is a harem. Well I think the raws are still ongoing so I am eagerly anticipating for more chapters.

It is a story of an engineer being reincarnated in another universe, as a prince and will fight against his siblings for the throne. It seems he will use the sciences (his knowledge) and magic (with the help of the persecuted witches) to fight for the throne.

I read the 26 translated chapters and it is fun to read. :)

What happens when a modern man blessed with creativity and knowledge is brought back as a prince in the Middle Ages? Nothing of course, unless you mix in the power of the witches. But, the almighty church burns these witches at stake! Oh no!

At its core, Release that Witch is a plot-driven story that wanks the progress of the modern world- our science and of course, morals. However, it is not without great character interactions spread like salt in a dish with just enough salt. Those interactions were delightful; I... more>> wish the author made it as salty as possible.

Lastly, reading this, I developed the skill to skip parts of the book that I have no interest in. Everything that was not related to the main plot or had interesting character interactions, I skipped, which is probably 65% of the novel. I have zero regrets. From what I chose to read, this is a solid 4/5. <<less

First of all, I really like the technology enters magical medieval world setting. The characters are shallow but acceptable and the world mostly follows the rules it set up. Plot armor exists but it isn´t too thick, it is used more in coincidences to drive the plot forward rather than make the MC op. Best of all, the names are not japanese/chinese/korean, so the struggle to remember names is a lot less (more than 250 named characters in the book...). (I cannot finish The world online due to all the... more>> asian names and the number of characters, locations, dinasties, and different groups to keep in mind.)

My biggest problem with it is the perspective. From what I remember after I finished reading this is that every chapter is from the perspective of a given character. There is no narration whatsoever, just perspectives of different characters. This leads to 2 problems: too many characters to push the plot forward (since MC cant be everywhere at once) and that the main character´s perspective the reader experiences in only about 50% of the chapters.

My smaller problem is that I feel like the quality of the novel up to about ch600 (
Spoiler

the start of the third battle of the divine will / interspecies war

) was a lot better than after. To be honest it feels like the author just lost interest. In the better part there were all kinds of setbacks: technological, administrative, economical and emotional. In the second part there were barely any setbacks, it felt like the struggles were without any substance.

The ending also feels lackluster, like the author wrote the plot into a corner and within the set boundaries / its own rules it could only be solved like this.
Spoiler

defeating the main antagonist (god in this book) via persuasion... not even RPGs have that as the main ending, only as a side one

[collapse]

The smallest problem I have with it is the title, it doesn´t do justice for the book, it is misleading and not grand enough. <<less
