Chen Yan travels between worlds, ending up becoming an honorable prince in a medieval fantasy world. Yet this world was not quite as simple as he thought. Witches with magical powers abound, and fearsome wars between churches and kingdoms rage throughout the land.

Roland, a prince regarded as hopeless by his own father and assigned to the worst fief, spends his time developing a poor and backward town into a strong and modern city, while fighting against his siblings for the throne and absolute control over the kingdom. Join Roland as he befriends and allies with witches and, through fighting and even farming, pushes back invaders coming from the realm of evil.

Excelent!

Where do I start without any spoilers. The world is vast, colorfull, and detailed to the f*cking bone. I never once felt the reading was cumbersome since the author really knows how to describe things with simple words, places and people that arent too eye catching by replacing everything prior.

MC is very good. He has few flaws but those are few and farbetween that I havent even noticed them firts 4 readthroughs. He makes those weaknesess very well rounded and by the end you cant imagine a MC differently.

I... more>> recomend this read to everyone. <<less

This is for you if you like: transmigration, magic AND science, modern technology being applied/reinvented in a medieval setting, smart/resourceful people actually being smart/resourceful, no ridiculous harems stemming from instalust.

Regarding the romance, there is one that builds up slowly and doesn't overshadow the story.

Although the main character used to be a wastrel/playboy/jerk, thankfully the other characters don't excessively emphasize that he used to be tr*sh. Although there are definitely a lot of satisfying "underestimates main character and then is blown away by the obvious change", it's mostly by allies and... more>> a little different from other face-slapping. <<less

This is a story of an engineer transmigrated into a new world with middle ages like era. There's magic but only witches and church can use it (so far). Witches are hunted down and the church is very despotic and cunning. The protagonist wants to build a new world using his tech knowledge of the previous life and combine it with the power of witches. To do this he has to confront the church.

Pros: level headed protagonist, epic world, smart side characters and cunning antagonist in church. The kingdom building... more>> is in detail, unlike most other kingdom building novels. Also translations are pretty good and fast.

Cons: I don't like how the story one sidedly tries to portray religion as something bad and people who believe those superstitions are not smart. I will give you an example:

Spoiler

- The below is only a fiction to show you how the story could be twisted any way you like.

The apostle was reading the archives of the church:

"10000 years ago the world was ruled by witches. They numbered only in thousands but controlled millions of lives. If you disrespected any witch your whole family would be destroyed. If you had a daughter with witch power you have to offer her to the Witch Association. Witch Association also collected boys. If they were lucky they were used as a sacrifice and died young. Some were used as s*aves for years before being tortured to death.

Few people knew that a man ruled the association. When he just created the Witch Association he wanted to help people and with the help of witches' power he helped a lot of people. But over the time he got bored and the power corrupted him. He began to think about the life, what is life, why have I come into this world? Unknowingly he began to believe that he's a strongest so he's a god. Since he was the strongest he can do anything he wishes for. So Witches Association instead of helping people started to ab*se them.

Witches rule went on for 1000 years, after which a rebellion took place. Witches were very strong, 1000s of people died to kill just one witch. Then after some time an organization was built to fight the churches. It captured newly awakened witches and experimented on them, they also brainwashed other witches to join them. It was cruel but anything to fight the witches. Over the time because the witch population kept decreasing and human advancement on witch magic they won the war. Millions of lives were lost in that war that lasted for 100s of years.

After the war the organization proclaimed itself as church. It helped to rebuild the human nations, helped people in need. The churches one of the roles was to prohibit of another witch organization."

[collapse]

Overall even though I have some issues with it being anti religious I will still give this story 5 because of an interesting storyline. <<less

It's a good read so far. I think the author/s have been in contact with european culture and mentality, since this novel does not follow the usual "asian mentality" that you see in most chinese novels. The protagonist is not cold blooded, revenge driven, you kill my family i'll kill your family too kind of guy (asian revenge style, killing more inocent people for the sake of a fake justice sense).

The only issue is that the author spends a bit of time explaining chemistry stuff that some people won't find... more>> too pleasant. Also, most people are too kind in this novel. With the except of the Church, which is the evil incarnate, most characters are loyal, nice, and don't break the law. Well, there are a few exceptions here and there but I would expect for it to be a lot harder to change the world. The MC kinda has it easy. <<less

Release that Witch is probably one of the best written light/web novel I read up to date at chapter 224. Set as Western fantasy, with MC being reincarnated in the new World. However, the MC does not have any magic and relies on his modern knowledge to shape the world around him. I've read at least three dozens titles from Japanese, Korean and Chinese authors, but this is truly a hidden gem. I had my initial doubt considering this was a Chinese novel and they tend to do a horrible... more>> job with pacing by dragging it out to no end, but RtW doesn't suffer from this.

Pros:

1. Great pacing of the plot line.

2. Not an overpowered MC that just goes around killing people with overpowered skill. He actually applies his modern knowledge realistically to solve his problems.

3. MC actually acts as a normal person. I despise the typical Japanese beta-male leads, and the hyper aggressive and hypocritical Chinese leads. The MC in RtW is consistent on how he perceives his surrounding and the actions he takes. He's willing to kill when needed, but he also doesn't seem to wantonly commit violence.

4. MC's love interest aren't just there for props. They actually have their important role in the plot (as they are the ones with Magic power) and they are given more than cookie cutter personality.

5. Well executed harem. Technically, MC as of now only has one lover, but there are at least one other lady hovering around the MC as possible love interest in the future. The reason many Chinese/Japanese light novels fail miserably, especially as plot progresses is that they end up with way too many love interests and they end up bogging down the plot line if the author tries to give those side characters life, or just end up being a generic and boring cookie cutter characters. As of now, romance is tastefully done, although a bit prudish for my taste, but I can accept this sort of development.

6. Amazing World Building.

7. Villains and rivals that are not actually cookie-cutter props to be discarded after an story arc. They have reasonable motives on why they are doing certain actions. Although they could use some more work, but RtW is certainly a lot better than other Chinese novels. I'll update the review around c500, but for now I have no serious complaints. <<less

So far, the story has given a lot of interesting exhibition, but I guess adding so much content in such a way can turn off readers as well.

I won't keep on saying it's best novel out there, but even though it has its flaws those faults aren't bad enough to ruin the novel.

The MC grows with time and there's not one event that makes the reader think that the MC is anything more than a prince with otherworldly knowledge.

I can only say that this novel is personality the best I've... more>> read in terms of world building and interesting story telling. A story about the MC starting from nothing and slowly allowing his town to grow and develop. <<less

Epic tale. Even better than Mushoku Tensei in my opinion (trust me, I don't make that statement lightly or often). It doesn't have any harem yet and might not later on also... but even if it did, it has the foundation required to not become one of those shitty forced harems that are made for the sake of fulfilling the author's fantasy. The pacing is also extremely good! Plot progression in almost every chapter... and yet not rushed to the point where it affects the story's stable narrative pacing. TL;DR:... more>> Excellent story. Deserves all the attention it gets and more. :) <<less

A damn masterpiece! Very unique and different from other Chinese novel. Those that rate this story so low probably are blind to the point that they cant be any more blind. Very realistic and no bullsh*t OP protagonist. No crappy romance either.

On a side note, I'm really surprised at the quality of this series. I'm not sure if its just the translator, or the writer is really good, but this is the quality and level of writing that I expect from most writers, especially Chinese writers (you know, consider the majority of them are terrible grammar, pacing, and plot wise).

To be honest, If I didn't already know it was Chinese, I would never have suspected it to be chinese, since its quality is for superior to 99% of chinese novels out... more>> there.

The theme is different and unique enough. The style of writing is quite different, in that its a european fantasy. There are no usual chinese troupes and cliches.

And most importantly of all, there is no use of Chinese idioms (I swear to god if see mount tai again, you won't be able to tell if I'm laughing or crying).

There are no peanut gallery style padding (where unimportant mob character A says "blah blah"), and all the side plot and stories end up adding to the story later.

And its a daily novel too. That means the high level of writing, plot development, and character development where events actually lead to something tells you something about how much effort the author is giving into this series (and the translators as well).

The characters are actually developed. The author goes in depth on most major characters, including backgrounds and feelings, and they aren't just tossed to the side either.

The Harem, oh man, its not really a harem. He is surround by girls (due to the plot of the story revolving around witches), but the other girls don't really love him and vice versa. He doesn't really like anyone really, and is pretty shy or dense about the main (and only) girl.

Conclusion:

This is a rare gem among chinese webnovels. There is little to no use of cliches or the usual chinese troupes. There are little to no use of chinese culture specific things (so foreigners won't be lost at some references). The characters are well written. There are no tangents, padding, filler, etc. Everything leads to either more plot and set ups, or more character development.

Its something you wouldn't expect with all the tr*shy chinese webnovels being translated nowadays. A rare gem of a series of excellent quality.

Rating: SSS

Rank: Top on my list of series to read. <<less

Awesome story. Hands down. Top three on the site. Hope romance starts to bud. Not going on in that department. MC is smart, kind, and logical. Conflicts are realistic. Very excited to see where the author will go with this. High expectations.

This is what I really call a transmigration story in wich the reincarnated party really knows how to use his knowledge from the previous world in the new one. The way he invents new technology and how he will use it is intriguing and makes you want to know more about what he will do next. And I love the relationship between him and the witches so guys you can expect a big harem haha! I'm really enjoying this new novel and I can't wait for more!!!

I asked Roxerer's team to join because I happened to stumble upon RW one day and was really caught by the story. Not your typical wuxia/xianxia, this is the story of an overworked engineer finding himself in the medieval times. The level headed MC trying to make the best out of the hand of cards he’d been dealt with. Really fascinating meeting of good ole common sense logic that seems utterly absent in a lot of wuxia novels these days. :D

This review is also a partial response to the UnknownAdd... more>> review below, I found it unfortunate that the reviewer chose to take out his frustrations on Release the Witch because Roxerer isn't the site owner and has no control over ads, and ranking a novel low here doesn't actually solve the problem. I got notified of this because Roxerer was bummed about a bad review (which I'm sure does wonders for translator motivation). I invite that reviewer to send me an email so I can take appropriate action to make sure this doesn't happen again (and smash some ad sponsor heads). <<less

This is a pretty interesting series. A Chinese engineer dies due to overwork, only to be reincarnated in another world. Directly taking over the body of the wastrel fourth prince, our hero must compete with his new siblings to be named heir to the crown.

Armed with his advanced scientific knowledge, Chen Yan/Roland is intrigued by the shortcuts magic offers, and seizes upon the idea of using Witches to develop his impoverished district.

The translation quality is pretty good, but the series does have some minor grammatical errors early on due to... more>> not having a consistent editor, hence 4/5 stars. Also, because there are not that many chapters translated, I can not honestly say that the plot or story line is amazing: it's just too new. <<less

First off I like the story. It's interesting and a different take on the genre of reincarnation. I'm especially a sucker for management style stories where the MC builds up the world around him instead of focusing on personal strength.

Editing the rating because over the last few days I have yet to get a suspicious redirect so I'm optimistic things are better. Granted I'm not binge reading 10 chapters at a time in the site, but normal reading appears fine.

For people complaining about a low ranking for site problems it... more>> is a perfectly legitimate rating and throws up warning flags where they need to go. People should be aware that the story is awesome, the translators are doing great, but the site may be unusable or dangerous. It's like evaluating a restaurant. You judge the food, service, and venue. The food may be awesome and the service is great, but if I'm fighting with rats to get to my food the entire experience goes down the drain. <<less

A bit of a slow burn, but satisfying. Halfway through went into some weird direction as though these were 2 separate novels being written in parallel (and I wasn't that much of a fan of the second one...)

I wasn't really ever much into war stuff (call of duty and such).

This novel, however, really got me interested in the history of weapons - so much so that I went to a ww1 artillery museum :')

... more>> Sometimes you go 100-200 chapters without a major development which was quite frustrating.

Most fun was in the city development - the characters and their stories were *sometimes* gripping. <<less

'Release that Witch' is a captivating novel that tells the story of Roland Wimbledon, a prince whose life becomes intertwined with Cheng Yan, a modern-day Chinese engineer. The story offers an interesting blend of fantasy, strategy, and moral dilemmas, as Roland navigates this new world and encounters witches, battles, and an intricate game of politics.

The protagonist, Roland, can be seen as a Mary Sue character - a nearly perfect individual with minimal character development. While this might not be a problem for some readers, others may find it less engaging... more>> as the story progresses. This issue is further exacerbated by pacing problems in the later parts of the novel, which ultimately led me to skip several chapters to reach the conclusion.

In summary, 'Release that Witch' offers a unique and intriguing storyline but falls short in the areas of character development and pacing. If you're interested in a story that combines elements of fantasy, strategy, and morality, 'Release that Witch' is worth a read. However, be prepared for a protagonist who may not have significant growth and some potential challenges with pacing in the latter portions of the book. <<less

It doesn't have many awful things that chinese (and they are abundant) authors copy to one another whenever they get into the fray of writing a novel of two for some more bucks. If I go back to one of the oldest novels of Mars, where he wrote while unhinged, he has darky, pe*verted and absurd things. Yet, I can enjoy them as I can read them with those being his writing and not a quick buck (his first novel was written at evening every day after working, I think... more>> he was a laborer in constructions or something at that time of his life, way before finding his wifey and having 2 daughters).

But even then, RTW has basically no good story telling, simply said; it's awful. One chapter finally gets into preparation for war or a huge event, next 2 to 15 chapters (depends on the lazy imagination of this google author whose name I don't even want to remember) is of not even side characters that... nobody asked nor cares about. Bravo.

World building is just lacking, there isn't nothing that is complete, Kingdom this there and Kingdom that here; civilization#1 and civilization#2. Btw, the MC's initial base has a growing mushroom unique to it, wow amazing thanks great.

... Character development... you know, there is the problem of chinese authors not knowing how to write romance, pity. Because the characters and circumstances that I've read across so many 'garbage typical' (insert wuxia, xianxia or xunahuan here) novel they bring to the world in which the authors just get mindblocked out of nowhere, just like your buddies getting you c*ckblock but it is just yourself and for no reason whatsoever.

Each character, be it witch, soldier, management buddy or even enemies are there, described once as a description come only once every 45 chapters or something that isn't a machine that could just be named correctly and you could google it, but let's not do that because using google would be soooo obvious by then...

They seem to be alive, even though you were just reading about an ongoing important battle and are suddenly brought to a bunch of dialogue with new names and horribly written personalities that must be fun because they are funny, haha! And that's all you get, then you get 'looks ugly, looks old, looks beautiful but hurt' and nothing else, have fun.

Battles, situations, reversals... A simple thing here, a MC can be overpowered, and nothing be wrong with it. But if your MC is 'overpowered' because he just slash and ka-boom a bit more than once or thrice and wins, that is where the problem is and that shouldn't be the 'Overpowered' tag but the 'Bad Writing' tag, no inside jokes here; sorry.

Basically, all ally witches? Can clean the garden, massage you well, burn some chimneys, cure wounds, cure diseases, make things lighter, make sounds... all enemy witches or witches that aren't specifically allies? Can kill all those who look at her with just her powers activating once and not wasting barely any power, can devour other people including witches and other strong races and get all of their memories and powers whatsoever without a single side effect and is even done in an instant (which author conveniently forgot about the power thingy, hm), is practically a supersoldier and MC gave them a cringe worthy ashbringer sword because hahaaaaa...

Basically, all enemies, and not just witches, are deus ex machina so that they are enemies, because they are important, and they matter... because the enemies of RTW are cool~.

No harem, just some wish fulfillment of denying other women because author cannot be any more repressed and let's not even speak of the second half of the novel where the author is so desperate for something to keep his readers attracted, what a sh*t he smoke.

If this is what people consider the gems of all gems... maybe I should check all translated 'garbage' they've read, that I would like to explore instead.

The World Online had much better plot, character development, world building, kingdom building, understanding of at least profit for one's kingdom in which you are the king and in which you are really one; and it's from a game. Yes, without spoilers, it's a game designed to choose greatest people of the world since earth was about to collapse and the rich got into spaceships, but it is from a game nonetheless. The irony... <<less

The first ever web novel I have read. I have read again. I would definitely recommend this. Great plot and as far as I can see, there are no plot holes or plot armour. Emotionally, it was well balanced. It really shows that MC is a human too.

When I read it, I felt like I was there in the story.
