Wow. Gotta say, this is one of the most powerful and thought provoking stories I have read on this site. For anyone who is questioning whether or not they should start this, go for it. It is a slow burn, but every arc builds upon the other for such a good story. There are many feels moments. This is one of the few novels that gave me such a deep feeling. Er Gen does this story so much justice. I love all the moments in this novel. I would recommend... more>> this to anyone. For those who have not read it, read it. For those who dropped it, pick it back up. I guarantee you will enjoy it. I also love all the Dao comprehension parts in the novel. It makes you wonder, what if? Wang Ling, with average talents, goes through many trials and tribulations. He may not be the most talented, but he works the hardest. It is so great seeing him grow from a regular cultivator to who he is currently.

My favorite arc was the one he spends a lifetime with his son. One of the best arcs I have ever read. There are so many great moments in this book, but this one stuck out to me the most.

As usual with Er Gen's novels, all of the characters feel artificial (including the protagonist), but it can nonetheless be enjoyable for some. Well, those same 'artificial' characters also have more life to them than most other web novel characters. If you like myths and similarly styled narration, you will probably like this one.

Anyway, below I will elaborate on some of the major flaws of this novel.

  • Boring main character

    There simply isn't much to him. He is supposed to be intelligent and stubborn, but there isn't anything else to him. Even after more than a 1000 chapters, he feels like a stranger most of the time, especially when he shows emotion (which happens maybe once or twice every few hundred chapters). I think he would be much better suited to being part of the 'lead cast' or protagonist's best friend, actually. He's also very cautious, which sounds great on paper, but in actuality it often leads to uninteresting conclusions.

  • Haphazard world building

    There are many mysteries and 'adventures' the main character goes through, but ultimately, the author rarely builds upon what is already there. He introduces new concepts, new artefacts and abilities, while old ones are reduced to honourable mentions. Explanations about how things work are usually just vague nonsense, which is supposed to give off a feeling of mystique. With that said, it is in line with the whole theme of the novel, so some might not find it to be a flaw.

  • No dialogue, monologue at the level of a parody

    I'm not sure if this is due to differences in language and culture, but most of the things characters say or think sound like a parodied version of some ancient speech, which is perhaps fitting. There also isn't any dialogue at all, as pretty much everything is resolved through a show of power.

  • Exploited plot holes and random clues

    The author will often 'fix' a plot hole by saying it was a clue to something greater. He also often throws around clues to future mysteries without planning which he uses once he's come up with a use for them. I could be wrong about the clues, but that's how it seems to me. With that said, this is not necessarily a bad thing, as a webnovel is pretty likely to develop plot holes due to quick pace of writing.

  • Lazy descriptions

    In my opinion, this is the biggest flaw of this novel. For example, when a character gets angry, their eyes shine with fury; when a character is supposed to be lustful, their eyes shine with lust; when they feel resentment, their eyes shine with resentment. And so on, and so forth. These descriptions are often unnecessary, as characters can show their attitude through actions or dialogue, but that pretty much never happens.

Why I think this is 100x better than ISSTH;

1. the world setting is as it should have been very dark and cruel instead of a world like ISSTH where it is a happy place until blah blah blah...

2. The main character is done very well at the beginning a child without talent for cultivation wanting to be a cultivator, whilst having a devil whispering into his ear to become one himself.

3. The character personality is great and could be witnessed strongly changes; innocent child, somewhat scheming youth, a youth against... more>> killing innocents, youth forced to commit crimes to survive etc eventually a brutal killer after which acheivig the goal which forced him to become a brutal killer he decided to walk a normal path where he wouldn't kill unless it was absolutely necessary. As for MH he had some good developments but then became ret*rded again after around c700 which lost my interest at that point but with this, I read somewhat ahead and it keeps getting better!!

4. Cultivation is more difficult as well as has more complications and other aspects.

5. Romance done somewhat well as you will notice around the beginning of 200s as well as around the beginning of 300s as they are expanded on...

Well whether you like it or not but you have to know 1 important factor by the time WL was 200 he didn't kill many at most 1 thousand as for MH when he was 200 he killed 100 thousand so when you say that WL is a brutal killer and MH is a cool and nice guy think about it this the fact that by 200 years old MH killed hundred times that of wang Lin by 500 let's not even compare that... because it's huge a difference as MH is mu*dering brat that doesn't have any proper character development as compared to Wang Lin <<less

If I'm not mistaken, Renegade Immortal was written wayyy before I Shall Seal the Heavens. So, it's understandable that it wasn't as polished as ISSTH. It was good enough in its own right. I actually loved Wang Lin more than I did Meng Hao. This book is totally worth looking into. I almost went MTL, but since I still valued my sanity, I decided to just wait patiently for the translations.

If you say Wang Lin is cruel, just wait until you meet Leylin from Warlock of the Magus World..

Well if you are looking for a novel where the MC either always finds artifacts wherever he goes or makes a good harem. Then I must say that this novel is not for you

But if you are looking for a novel where the MC is a ruthless person, but still using his brain to face his opponent. Give it a try

Totally awesome. Just started reading it, and I already caught up within two days. Just like coiling dragon I could not stop clicking next page. The storytelling is fantastic. The reader gets to see a common youth transform from a naive but smart cultivator into a cunning and ruthless immortal. Although there is a lot of closed door training montages, this is by far one of my favorites CN.

Alright I came reading this after ISSTH since most of the people rated it good but if you are going to read it u should know some things first. This novel deserve 2 or 3 (deppend on what taste do last ch's leave) stars but since everyone here votes 5 without any explanation I went and put it down a little.

One of the good things is MC development trough the story since the change in mentality and behaviour of Wang Lin undergoes extreme transformation. Also other characters here are very... more>> nicely shaped and their personalities are solid and constant. World building is sometimes little speed up but overall really nice altough confusing (but I think it's because of the translation I read). Feelings are also very detailed since you can also feel the conflict in Wang Lin hearts and how his resolution shapes.

Now some of the bad things

MC isnt really smart rather he sometimes feels crazy and relies on past experiences. At one point during his more "ruthless" stage I feel like author overdid it a little since his killings and mu*ders feel shallow. There isnt really any socialising unless MC urgently need something or wants to scam something. Bad guys are pretty much the same as in any Xianxia the difference is that here they come in flocks and some even without reason. The number of insignificant people and their names might also pose a problem for new readers since minor characters you meet for 1 page appear like a memory fragments along the way and you might mix some similar names. Also cultivation... oh god... cultivation is really bland.

There are no techniques in it at all. Wang Lin just cultivates... that's it. At the start there were cultivation techniques but after a while seems they were forgotten. Since there arent any techniques, treasure vs treasure ensues. Few examples. vs low ivl bystanders (points hand, "die" and the person exploded in blood mist) vs "bad guys" (throws sword "sword spirit attack" 0 dmg, 1k soul flag attack 20 dmg, my soul attack, crit 70 dmg-->cut him sideways or step on his head)

There is also some heavy plot armor which can be also due to opponent arrogance or incredible luck. <<less

Awesome novel from my favorite author. Very engaging story. Good flow and great plot development. Cruel cultivation world molding a weak and struggling MC into a powerful hero. Thrilling fights, close calls and tragedy brings life into the story. Cultivation is detailed and beautifully explained. MC's power ups are not rushed and well imagined. New arcs are often accompanied with a new setting like many other novels but the feeling of a fresh new adventure is always maintained here. Overall a very good read. Good job by translators.

This is my first review on novelupdates although I'm not exactly new to webnovels, I might accidentally spoil somethings but I did try my best to weed out any spoilers I could see. So far I've read all Er gen novels (until the point of translation), and most mainstream novels such as WDQK, BTTH, CD, DE, ATG, HJC, TtNH, MGA, Ze Tian Ji, Emperor's domination, etc. From similiar genres. I'll start of by saying that this novel has been a complete delight so far. Completely ignore any reviews you've read... more>> written by those who never got past 500 chapters at the very least. I must say ahead that I'm a big fan of Er Gen's work and it is not unfounded and blind following but rather the effect of reading his novels and many many other author's works.

Please note that although renegade immortal was written before ISSTH, PoT, AWE I've read it after reading ISSTH completely and hence kinda wrote the review as if RI came after ISSTH.

No matter what cons and reviews you might see you definetly MUST give it a read (completely) and you will definetly not regret it. I strongly believe that the ratings for this novel is very subjective and not an absolute rating. Sort of like a rating given by people who most likely already had high hopes and expectations for it.

The character development is probably the most realistic among all the novels I've read so far. Say you put yourself in his shoes and you go through the same things he has gone through you will probably end up exactly he does (in terms of character) as long as you have some positive qualities. And it is does positive qualities that sets him apart as a protagonist.

Despite all being written by the same author, Er Gen always manages to give the protagonists of his novels a very unique and different personality. You will not feel like the characters are similiar infact they are entirely different.

The protagonist Wang Lin in one word is simply "Badass". He starts of as a naive innocent kid who is exposed to the cruelty of the cultivation world and struggles to adapt to it. There's a proper transition of his personality to a cold hearted ruthless character seen clearly in the novel. Unlike most other MCs who are only cold and ruthless at the face value but becomes a h**ny dog or wimpy cat infront of beauties and threats, you can feel the genuinity of his character. But note that cold and ruthless doesn't mean unreasonable savage a**hole. His past experience made him a cautius and prudent but you he doesnt kill indescriminately. He doesn't involve in pointless fights and doesn't act like a hero of justice. Throughout the novel you will feel like you are looking at the life of a solitary warrior who has always been at the receiving end of the shortstick fight back all alone and overcome it. He remains intelligent at all times and doesnt randomly suffer massive IQ drops like in other novels. Unlike other novels which follow the concept of facing enemies who are mostly of the same level or a bit higher than the MC at any point of time in the novel, Wang Lin's enemies are unimaginably stronger than him at some parts in the very beginning itself and he doesn't miraculously defeat them but rather prepares for the eveentual battle for a long time while cleverly trying to gain as much time as possible. Unlike ISSTH, and almost every other novel his reliance on luck is very little compared to his prudence, planning, and efforts.

The plot is good and is not episodic in nature but is built over the entire length of the novel. The enemies are clear and absolutely no arrogant grand masters. Infact most of his battles are directly with the senior generations and not with those of his.

The world is VERY big and gets bigger and more interesting. The author does a good job describing them.

The cultivation system like every other er gen novel is very intricate and detailed. The best part of Er Gen novels are how epiphanies are explained and seem like actual epiphanies and not random power boosts.

The humor in the novel is very little when compared to ISSTH or A will eternal. But there are some situational humor parts dispersed in the novel but very few. Wang Lin as such cannot be really described as a funny MC in any way. Personally I am someone who lives humor and seek it but even so I enjoyed the novel immensely.

Despite the lack of humor the novel will have you completely excited and giggling to yourself at many parts. Battles are super exciting and of the right length. And some battles are really Epicly written and will have you at the end of your seats.

Now a considerable drawback would be the lack of romance in the novel. But the romantic parts are really well written and will have you get a warm and light feeling. Personally I love this sort of romance instead of those annoying quarrels, pouts and steamy scenes out of nowhere. In short the romance was very little but the those little parts were beautiful. Would have been much better if the romantic interest could make more appearances.

The authors language and use of vocabulary is brilliant as usual. It feels like a proper novel and not like a novel for kids (like coiling dragon, ATG, etc). You will feel like you are listening to a Taoist monk enlightening you at some places. Like all Er Gen novels have a tendency to exaggerate the heights, lengths and distances like a dimensionally challenged which might be a teeny bit hard to imagine but it doesnt have any direct effect on any part of the novel.

The number os side characters in the novel are very few to non existent. At the point I am at now though I feel like a slightly significant side character has been forgotten for a while now. But knowing Er Gen I do believe that he will make appearance later on and that to in a proper justifiable fashion.

Cliches are very few. Plotholes are almost non existent. Translation quality and speed is great.

All in all RI is a definite must read for any Wuxia, Xianxia, Xuanhuan fans out there. <<less

Hmph! People truly blind for this being rated lower that what it truly deserves! When has Er Gen ever given us a horrible novel or an mc? Except for romance ofc..

People say he’s evil, but he’s really not. The cultivation world shaped him the way he is! And even when something really great happens to him you feel he’s still sad because of what he has gone through, and the way he comprehends the Dao makes me cry!! Its really an emotional novel. And when he goes killing, it’s for... more>> a REASON. And he’s not without feeling, and not once does he kill innocent people! And no he isn’t arrogant. He’s a tragedy although not as much as the MC in Pursuit of Truth, but still. Give it a read, you’ll not regret it.. Even the chapters that are filler which are barely is fun! One of my most favourite MC! <<less

A novel that really has the seriousness of batman, a good novel but also quite dark imagine a something like the godfather made in a xianxia universe but do know that I don't mean families and gangs I'm just saying the seriousness of it.

This novel takes at least 120 or so chapters to kick off.

This is the story that put er gen on the map and reading this you can see why. The story follows protagonist wang lin as he goes from a mortal to a cultivator and the life he leads. The world of xian ni is very much a kill or be killed world which wang lin figures out very quickly.

The story is very good at tragedy and makes you feel for wang lin and all his struggles. Don't expect too much plot armour in this novel, every struggle that wang lin... more>> ends up he solves with his wits if nothing else and makes a refreshing read to not see some random senior show up to save him.

To conclude. I would read it but wait a while as the current translator at this point is re doing the story from the beginning while continuing where the previous translator left it. So he still has some chapters to go before he's completely caught up with himself, however, there are still 100+ chapters on wuxia world so feel free to get started!

Some flaws I spotted though is the weird way that people interact. Expect a lot of sneer/shocked inwardly for people talking to each other. Also lets not forget how every technique is powered by qi that is spat out. Yeah that's weird <<less

Brilliant work, slow start and proper descriptions, similar to other Er Gen works. Which gives it a feels a bit more like proper litterature than a "reader digest". Much darker tones than other flashy light novel, with proper scheming plans, where antagonists actually have a brain, with an articulate plot that goes beyond the "you kick my ass! I kick yours".

Is this the best piece of quality fiction in the xianxia genre? Unfortunately no. But it really is way up there among the top ones in terms of the intricacy of the plot, the characters (somewhat) and definitely the part regarding dao contemplation.

As a story, it starts out in a relatively unique manner i.e wang lin, our main character is just an ordinary, filial, simple little boy. In this genre, it seldom happens that the main character has a completely ordinary background. There is almost always something wrong with his... more>> ancestry or he is an orphan which is a very powerful plot pivot and foundation for many others to construct their story or at least an arc on. Er gen threw away this overly used premise and that is a bold move for an author who was just starting his career in this cut throat profession.

And it paid off. Until you are introduced to a cheat -the bead. I felt at that moment that my expectations were going to go down the drain. It was a likable premise and for once at least an author bothered to try and flesh out his main character which most of the others fail to do, regrettably so. But I was pleasantly disappointed in my prejudice. The cheat wasn't an old dusty ring with a grandpa spirit in it nor was it a poison gem from your past life with a powerful tsundere woman in it. It was something far more potent and served as a monkey wrench to everything we are acclimatised to expect from these kinds of novel. This was what set the novel apart initially for me.

despite its unique premise, it wasn't well structured at the start. Prose was messy, the inconsistency in measurements was off putting, style and tendencies of writing were getting redundant and seemed to directed to fill up the word count. The only thread of interest tying me to this story at that time was the apparent improvement in er gen's writing. I knew this was his first, and as a fellow writer myself, I wanted to witness this man's literary journey.

And it is safe to say, I was rewarded. After sitting through around 300-400 chapters there was a shift in the narrative

wherein wang lin didn't just passively respond to whatever perils he faced but actively sought for something, therefore laying the foundation of his actions in the future.

The beauty of this novel lies in its slower paced arcs. The dao comprehension arcs, explicitly speaking.

The one where he found his dao, the evolution of his dao to karma and then to true and false. All of them seemed a breath of fresh air and a served much needed refrain from the constant fights and gore. The way it all was conjured was ingenious and I hadn't read something like that in fiction before.

There are parts in this novel which are very endearing and beautiful and it seemed like er gen tried to project his ideals of filial piety and father-son relationship on the center piece of his imaginary constructs.

Wang lin, a character seemingly devoid of emotions and mercy bawled like a baby in front of his parents' grave way after he had achieved some fraction of the power he pursued. The pain he felt when he didn't allow his son to cultivate because he knew he would completely lose whatever fraction of his son was left if he let him cultivate.

There is some play between what is real, what is false and can something which is false in someone's perception (a dream) manifest as

The magnitude of world building and its surrounding plot is absolutely top notch and one of the main reasons why I put him on the top on is because how the plot unfurls and the bigger world reveals itself is a sight to behold.

Another good thing (and bad thing) is that er gen writes what he means and means what he writes. Sometimes the prose is downright atrocious and direct in its description of events like "his eyes shined in fury or turned green with greed". But sometimes it does its job and cuts out all the needless eloquence (mao ni) .

Despite the popular agreement that the romance of this novel is downright farcical, I would have to say otherwise and it is the only thing that er gen has been subtle about. There is a certain maturity about it. You can't have a gritty tale and instantly switch to whispering sweet nothings under the mistletoe to your lady love. (Unintentionally maybe?) :-

  1. A man who has repressed all his emotions to cope with a debilitating trauma and survive in a world full of deceit and threats would always keep a special place in his heart for the first one to show him affection.
  2. There was a complicated attraction he felt for red butterfly which never really bloomed due to the power struggle.
  3. Liu mei's inviolable position as the mother of his child despite not being his lover.
  4. Reciprocation (somewhat) of the feelings of the Blue haired woman out of sympathy, which many men do, unfortunately. (We just can't be as cruel as women)

CONS:-

there were quite a few and they are either those which are the usual pitfalls of this genre or simply spawn due to er gen's writing during the starting point.

  1. Drab and uninteresting fights. Most of the fights are turn based like in an Rpg game at the start and most are facilitated via treasures which defeats the purpose of the " comprehension" this novel puts on such a high pedestal. The act of name calling is also quite prevalent at the start
  2. Lack of character in almost everybody, except a few. Wang lin being one of the former. He seems way too monochrome for someone on the pedestal of a main character. He is always cold and gloomy and that's fine. But there are shades and layers of characters. There was almost negligible character growth after

  3. Ill presented romantic chemistry. I won't say much, but the depiction of female characters, or the lack thereof doesn't invoke a sense of sympathy in us when our MC is drinking his grief away. We just can't feel. And unfortunately in a character centric novel, which has us follow the MC, doesn't give much leeway to construct meaningful female characters. (Unless you got mad skillzzz like mao ni woof!).
  4. Lack of intricacy in world building. While the magnitude leaves us in awe, the lack of attention to details, which can be attributed to gen's inexperience, does hamper the flow of the read and it has indeed frustrated me to a large extent. Spells and treasure just remain as mere names and become redundant faster than Trump sparking a shitstorm by writing irresponsible stuff on twitter (very entertaining)
  5. Sometimes, the comprehension part also feels jarring and vague. It seems like gen uses sophistry and mysticism to keep the reader on the edge of the seat but that doesn't always culminate to a fulfilling experience. But there are instances where er gen has worked on symbolism which actually culminates into massive things and has ramifications in his future novels.
That being said, this is still a really good novel. His peak writing skills are exhibited in POT (BTD) , but gets smeared with the stench of commercialism in ISSTH and AWE was a failed experiment. Witness a gritty story of a man on his path to resurrect his woman. A definite recommend. <<less

Personal preference I guess, but I just can't agree.

The only good thing I find about this novel is that the author has a very wild imagination (a good thing), and the characters are well drawn.

1. The MC is a total villain and sore loser.

2. He's nerfed in almost every arc (gets old).

3. Author says the breakthrough was based on comprehension, but the said cultivation level can regress when operating a life-saving method (how???).

4. Almost anything (cultivation, comprehension (??), domain (???), memories, soul, etc.) can be consumed by others.

5. Nearly every fight is based solely upon treasures.

6. Super huge plot armor for both MC and villains.

7. And no romance to speak of. (Please don't speak of the on there is)

8. And incomprehensible action sequences in which anything goes, and every one has a ton of, ehm, trump cards.

I'm not at a high chapter count but I've read ISSTH, and so I don't feel any of it is going to change. <<less

Definitely one of the best Novels outside there. This novel portray's the MC and other characters in a very much realistic way.

Unlike the other typical wuxia novels you won't find a MC who indiscriminately kill people creating a havoc for no Reason (not that I remember).

Unlike other MCs (hypocrites) he doesn't justify what he does is right, he knows that he need to be cruel and merciless to move on forward in the path of cultivation.

He is not talented like other MC (the authors call them geniuses, did the definition... more>> of genius change?... not that I know), he took about 800 years teach his level what other MC's do it on 10 years (and they say it is their hard work although they got some heaven defying method..... ?)

And so on

Most importantly the plot of the novel is great (which other novels lack and try to fill out using repetitive content [generally with competitions]), although the first fewfew chapters doesn't seem to contain anything eye catching, trust me once you start reading this you won't be able to stop it.

And a big bow to our translator for picking this great novel.

The MC creates an avatar which is supposed to be able to live 30 yrs, however after 40+ yrs the avatar is still fine.

The descriptions of a breakthroughs sometimes span across multiple chapters and those chapters usually are fairly lengthy and painful to read.

MC is an idiot, he has a certain capacity for learning AND he is perceptive, HOWEVER I sh*t you not he screws up like 10 breakthroughs.

MC has a ancient artifact that let's hm train in a sortof timechamber. Half of the time he doesn't remember and wastes his lifetime in real world instead.

The best cultivation novel

This is an ideal xianxia fiction where Wang Lin has a genuinely conscientious, solemn personality and the path of cultivation is incredibly logical, while it is absolutely clear how difficult and profound/esoteric/philosophical obtaining transformative/magical/deifying abilities is

The author, Er Gen wrote other cultivation novels, but they fall short on these essentials to a consummate work

I didn't leave a review before.

You guys got to remember this is the novel that made Er Gen popular.

At a certain arc, his novel became very popular because it was very human. Many readers felt it hit a chord. Why become an immortal? Most stories can't give you an answer except you need to be strong to protect.

... more>> But Xian Ni/Renegade Immorral goes more in depth about the cycle of life.

Wang Lin is much better than all the other main characters in Er Gen's stories.

With regards to romance... doesn't take much for people to fall in love. Look at the modern world you like that person you like that person. People are shallow and base on looks. The longer you spend with the opposite s*x, the greater the attraction. <<less

I came back to edit my review after I finished this novel (which was months ago but I didn't think about it until now so....)

On a serious note, I won't say it's flawless but to me, it's perfect. I love it so much I'm willing to accept it as it is. I'm not saying I wanna fk this novel, I'm not a hopeless pe*vert. I'm just saying if this novel was human person, I'd definitely fuc- I mean make love to her.

It has it's ups and downs. Sometimes u will think about skipping some chapters but sometimes it will make u sleepless at night.

The MC is different... Different from everything I have ever read. Cold, ruthless and decisive but a hopeless romantic (imo. I said IMO!)

Also, he is not some lucky bastard with plot armor who obtains treasures or inheritances like it's nothing. He is not a genius with absolute talent either. He's just a stubborn guy with a heaven defying will

Almost everything he achieves is through his own effort. What? U don't like the almost? Gimme a fkin break! He deserves a windfall or two! He's been through enough already!
