Dong Jiahui, the daughter of the Dong family, was kicked out of the house by the Lu family because she had been married for three years and was unable to get pregnant. Dong Jiahui, who felt ashamed, jumped into the river in search of death. Immediately after she was rescued, her soul also changed.

The Dong family’s Jiahui was five miles away from the Shanghe Village. Zhao Donglin’s wife was an educated youth who left her two children to go back to the city. In order to take care of the children, Zhao Donglin, who was about to become a battalion commander, retired to the countryside.

“This damned little bit*h cried and shouted to marry us, to let her marry our Donglin. Now she doesn’t even care about her children and wants to go back to the city!”

For the six-month-old girl, Yingbao, Zhao Donglin wants to give his two children a stepmother. He refused the introduction of 17 or 18 people who were matched with him and finally chose the infertile Dong Jiahui. Zhao Donglin thought that since Dong Jiahui couldn’t have a baby, she would certainly treat Heidan and Yingbao as her own child.

He inquired and found out that Dong Jiahui was a woman with a submissive personality, and such a woman leads a stable life. As long as she treats the children well, he will treat her well for the rest of his life.

On the wedding night, Dong Jiahui finally discovered the secret of the original owner’s infertility. It turned out that she was still a v*rgin!

I would like to agree with the review of saphie. This novel indeed has a good plot but the execution of it was quite poor. I also wanted to have the ex wife to somewhat have a little more screen time to add more drama. But overall this is a good/okay read. I like the plot, it's cute and fluffy. I like how FL did her best to be a stepmother. I like the healthy relationship of our FL and ML.

Good plot. Horrible execution. I can kinda see how the author wants it to go but everything just spiraled out their control so here is a messy, but nonetheless, finished work. Everything was very smooth after the sister-in-law scene and no conflict at all that I wished the x-wife would just appear and make a scene! She did, but left so soon I didn't feel her presence at all. It was heartwarming actually, but I just can't bring down the boringness and flatness it gave that it made it unenjoyable.

A good slice of life china 1970s story. It is deep in history, gender prejudice of rural people at the start but it get better with passing due to the story's passing years.

MC is a future person so it all came rather smoothly for her and she took her in laws family and her own family along to the rich life.

This novel is quite relaxing to read. There's no too much face slapping just quarrel between relatives because of jealousy.

What I like in the novel:

  1. MC is not OP. She just transmigrate and use her knowledge to become a better person. She shows that not because she is a stepmother she won't tolerate the stepchildren.
  2. ML is sweet and brainy. He is not he type of person who have low IQ & EQ. He didn't hold on to his ex-wife and live honest life with MC. He didn't mind going to college with MC. And he didn't change until the end.
  3. The children, mostly the eldest, didn't mind he have a stepmother. He understand the reason why he have a stepmother and how his stepmother love him.
I don't hate anything about the novel... more>> because all of the events are part of the story to progress. I just want to list down what I don't like about some characters.

  1. ML's ex-wife. She is s*upid. She married ML but didn't want to live poor life. She should know that theres a possibility that ML won't live in the city she dream about yet she still married him.
  2. MC's sister-in-law who is jealous. I forgot her name. I don't know why she feel jealous when she knew herself that the reason she live well is because of ML and MC. I don't like brain dead character even if they are just background character. I like the character to have real reason of their actions.
Well, I love the novel. The romance is sweet and slow. Not face paced at all. <<less

A very nice and mature slice of life story in the 70’s. No big drama nor dramatic face slap scenes. I love how the author choose our casts here (not only MC and ML) choose to be kind, improve themselves to reach happiness rather than focusing on revenge. I love the interaction between the casts, and teach the reader about filial piety, kindness, hard work, and give hopes that life not always hard.

Very entertaining, soothing, and lovely.

If you like good written novel with mature MC, this is the one for... more>> you. The romance is not much, but it’s enough to make your smile bloomed, and heartwarming. <<less

Wow, I found a gem. I think this story is seriously underrated. I love the story and the characters so much (except for a few annoying sister-in-laws).

I especially love how selfless MC was. She didn't only make her own family doing better, she also did it for her husband's family. She encouraged youngsters in ML's family to take college entrance examination so they could have a better life together.

Spoiler

In the end, MC and ML became a government officer with a high position (MC was in foreign affair while ML in economy affair). As for ML's brother, Donghe, he surprisingly did well in a business venture (I think he was far richer than ML's family now).

I initially wondered why MC and ML didn't do business themselves because MC came from modern era and she had many ideas but when I think about it again, their current jobs somehow really suited them well. ML had an upright character and loved to contribute to the country. With his knowledge, he strived to make common people's life better. And I also didn't think MC want to be a business tycoon from the start. If she wanted to be a businesswoman, she would focus on building her business since in the village because she had so many opportunities with her skills alone. But she didn't do it and focused more on her family.

[collapse]

I also love the mothers in this story so much. Almost all of them were a good mom.

Spoiler

MC's mom didn't despise her daughter just because she was divorced by her first husband. She even didn't let MC remarry some random men because she was afraid she will enter another fire pit. She didn't care about others talking behind her back. She only worried that MC would take it to the heart and become sad.

ML's mom was also a good mother-in-law. She treated her daughter-in-laws kindly, even the horrible Zheng Yuefen (ML's 2nd brother's wife). She was so different from other mother-in-law in the countryside who often treated their daughter-in-law as a s*ave.

[collapse]

This story also had a "villain" but those characters were considered minor and they got their contribution rather quickly.

Spoiler
  • MC's ex husband's family, especially her ex mother-in-law didn't have a good time after MC's ex (Lu Chenyuan) married a new wife. Mrs Lu forced Lu Chenyuan to divorce MC just because she didn't get pregnant after 3 years of marriage while in fact, she was still a virg*n and Lu Chenyuan had an erectile disfunction. Lu Chenyuan was too coward to admit his condition to his mother and MC took all the blame in the end. But his new wife was a domineering one and she didn't give Lu Chenyuan and his mother a face at all so they quarreled all the time. She even made Lu Chenyuan a chuckoold and got pregnant with other man's child. I pity Lu Chenyuan a bit though. I know he was wrong to divorce and destroy MC's reputation but it was also not easy for him with that kind of problem as man in that era. He must be frustated but was too ashamed to get some help. His mother also contributed to his cowardness because she was too domineering and controlling.
  • Wang Mei was a city girl who was sent to a countryside but secretly longed to get back to the city one day. She was betrayed by her boyfriend so she married ML who had a promising future. But she wasn't satisfied with her life in the countryside and when she had an opportunity to go back to the city, she divorced ML and didn't hesitate to leave her children with hin so they didn't hinder her future in the city. I must say that Wang Mei is really s*upid. She could consult with ML about her desire and with ML's character, I think he will try to fulfill Wang Mei's wish so she didn't have to abandon her family. But she still chose to run back to her ex boyfriend who only treated her like a mistress (served her right). In the end, she married another man for convenience but they didn't have a good relationship.
  • Zheng Yuefei was another s*upid woman. She had a kind husband and mother-in-law who could tolerate her temper but she didn't appreciate it. She kept making trouble and after getting so much chance to repent, ML finally couldn't take it anymore. He separated the 2 families and in the end, Donghe also divorced her. Speaking of Donghe, he's a bit pitiful because after his divorce, he still didn't find anyone that he trully loved till the end.

So for everyone who wants to read this book. It's very good. The plot was a bit slowburn but it was worth it. Some dissapointments though, suddenly translations became paid. There was no indication in the earlier chapters that this novel will have paid chapters, I have no paypal so thats just ugh. I was on chapter 59 and now I have to go to MTL to finish the whole thing. If I only knew earlier I woudnt bother to start. Although yes I know and understand the content has... more>> been translated through the efforts of translators and I do appreciate their work. <<less

I loved the story which is my favorite type of pure slice of life without those 3rd rate dogblood cliche drama and misunderstandings, the reason I gave 4 stars because the story is TOO short and what happened with second sister in law.

Spoiler

The MC and ML have decent personalities and settings. Both families are good, just too passive. All the progress depend on the MC, like NPCs who can't move without instructions from a player.

The characters' thinking is somewhat traditional but you can't expect 70's people to have the same mindset of now, especially china 70's.

The ML fully supports her career and education and respects her, he was afraid at the beginning (because of his ex) but I can understand his feelings and he didn't stop her or hold her back from her dreams.

about the second sister in law, I can understand that a hero needs a villain and their existence make things more interesting if used in the right place, but this doesn't mean that everyone has to get along with the MC or they become vicious villains. Her second sister in law setting was selfish but she gets well with her husband and that was fine. Later she was turned into brainless vicious cannon fodder to make the MC look better, but a real better or successful person doesn't need others to become loser to look successful, great people will always be compared to other great people not losers.

The same thing happened with her little sister in law Mixiang. Luo Siwen the older sister in law of Mixiang was made as brainless vicious cannon fodder who sew discord between family members and say wrong things to children.

Good, short, light read. Typical 70s novel about going to college and getting rich after. No dog blood drama. Although this troupe is quite overused, the beauty is in the details, as is expected in a slice of life novel.

this story was kinda boring in later part put still it was little bit refreshing than other story of the same type in which FL and ML live well and raise their children and FL had no to very minor interaction with her in laws but in this story she live with her in laws before moving to the city for study purposes she faces all kind of drama like her sister in law{wife of the ML brother} and all kind of rumors we gotta listen in villages

This novel is good! Not much drama and a smart couple, they respect each other. There is a comment about how the ML did not respect the FL and got her pregnant but to be honest I do not think so, is more like he want to have a child with her and to have a part of both of them. Give it a try and take into account the era and context before being to hard.

the comment section makes you confused sometimes that's why most often than not I rarely read it i'd rather explore and judge the story myself, for how many novels you're read im sure you can always tell if the novel was good, average or not from early chapters. But anywayz, thanks to @PAPERBALLOON for contradicting some of the negative/nonsense comments.

This is my second time reading this novel! The first time around, I persisted for quite awhile (c55 at least). This time, I quit by the 37th chapter XD. Not necessarily because I thought it was a bad read, but well, it's a bit boring. The issue is... this story is more of a study of what a second marriage is like in the 1970s than a story of a girl who is getting married for the second time in the 1970s. Does that make sense?? I guess what I'm... more>> saying is... uh, it's like the characters are not involved in it. They're just actors in a play, bad ones LOL -- they're enough to portray the essence of the play, but not quite enough to make you empathize.

__________

SUMMARY: The FL is a modern woman that transmigrated into the 1970s. The original owner of the body is named Dong Jiahu. She was married to a weak s*um for three years and was divorced for not being able to give birth to any children. After a bit of back and forth (too much, if you ask me), she ends up getting married to the ML (Zhao Donglin), a retired soldier who is now working as a Comune Secretary. The ML had been married once before, and had even had two children. He encountered the FL and took a fancy to her. As such, the two became a pair.

_________

THOUGHTS: If you're interested in reading more about the era, I recommend giving this novel a try. It's quite detailed about the political environment and cultural expectations in the 1970s (at least, far more explicit than other novels). In this sense, the author did quite a good job. However, that's about it XD. The pacing of the overall plot is a mess from the get-go, and there's lots of filler where nothing really happens. It just drags on and on uninterestingly. The FL, who is overly passive, doesn't make any big moves, playing in the background most of the time. And the ML, who does make some moves here and there, is too dull to push the boat forward. FJSLKAFJLA

Ahh all this sounds a bit overly negative. But I really don't have a good impression of this novel. Part of it is also because of the messy text. Not sure if it's because of the TL (which is edited MTL, so it's not the cleanest) or just the author's inexplicable style, but there are repeating statements everywhere jslfksjlaf. Well... anyway, since I've given it a second shot and still disliked it, I don't think I'll be reading this again. That being the case, I decided to give it a rating! 2 stars! More specifically... 2.3/5!! LMFAO. For the sake of the detailed worldbuilding, I gave it more. Because it really is good for studying cultural practices of the era. The plot is also not bad, just messy and awfully structured. At the very least, you shouldn't be bored if you enjoy historical details and petty drama. <<less

Lovely slice of life. It's nice to see a story in this theme where the black market speculation was not a thing. Not because I mind that being a point, but after reading so many of these "back in the 60's, 70's" type stories, it was almost feeling like there was absolutely no way to succeed at the start unless you dabbled in the illegal (however foolish it being illegal was). Having a bit of a different flavor was nice.

It was an enjoyable read. The story was a bit slow at first but it picks up the pace after they get into uni. Reading about the main couple and their various relatives becoming successful was very gratifying. I'm just sad it ended so quickly, I wanted to read about the children more.

Overall

I must say, the story isn't as comforting and chill as I was expecting. Honestly, this feels like a more snapshot-esque, far shorter, lower-intensity version of Back to the Sixties, Get Wealthy, Raise Cubs. The characters are less vibrant and have less personality than the ones in the other story. There is less detail in everything as well. Kinda meh about it overall, but I was at least engaged enough to read until the end.

At the first part, the bad guys are super annoying! Since the bad guy is... more>> the sister-in-law, they live in close quarters, so they have a lot of page time : (. The MC is a tolerant and side-stepping kind of person so there isn't any faceslapping from her boo. The faceslapping isn't satisfying because the bad guys don't learn or understand it. After the initial fear and alarm of the faceslapping, they very quickly become more entitled. Like punching cotton. Haih, the suffocating tight feeling of annoyance is present throughout most of the story because the faceslapping is not thorough enough to clear the air. When the final, more satisfying faceslapping happened, it took a few chapters to complete. And there were some time skips before it was done. Haih, why got time skip willy nilly.

Writing/Translation

The translation I read is from Shanghai Fantasy. Very enthusiastic but the translation is still kinda eh. Better than MTL, but not good. There are quite a few sentences where I don't know who's who or their feelings towards anyone, that I just don't understand. I can somewhat decipher the sentences but don't wish to use my brain so much. Until the end, not sure if it's a translation issue or just the writing, but I still don't understand some paragraphs. It also has a lot of pronoun errors. And random repeated paragraphs. And sometimes, there are 2 paragraphs of the same meaning but explained slightly differently, not sure if the translator forgot to delete the other one. And missing double quotes for dialogue sometimes. So, sometimes I don't know if the sentence is someone thinking or if it's dialogue.

As for the writing, the style is not quite in the head of the MC every single chapter. I feel like this story is written in such a way that it is just depicting the lives of people in that time period that just happen to be the MC and her family. It doesn't follow them 100% of their lives but will pick important events to show. So you don't feel as close to the MC as in Back to the Sixties, Get Wealthy, Raise Cubs. Especially in the last ish parts of the story. Personally, I don't like the author's style of introducing a bold idea for someone to make money, doing some setup/decision making for the business, then writing a few paragraphs of what happened regarding the business years in the future, which is basically, became a tycoon and made millions of money, then come back to present time to resume the business idea. I feel like the flow is interrupted all the time.

Pacing

The beginning is surprisingly quite slow. It took 16 chapters for the couple to meet and agree to be married. They finally get married in chapter 25+. Lol. The pacing is a little weird because we don't follow every single day-to-day life of the MC but the main events we will go into detail, then skip some months or half a year or almost a few years before we go into detail about the next big event. Sometimes, I feel that the event is too long lol. Like the weddings. Also, in the same chapter without any section dividers, we can go from one scene to suddenly years in the future without realising it. The timeskip is not clear. I feel like the story is a journal instead of an in-depth story.

Plot

I feel the ending ish of the story focused way too much on the side characters. Especially for the youngest sister-in-law's wedding. The pov wasn't the MC anymore but the side characters. I like them fine but I'm not that interested in their wedding details or the romance they had.

Themes/What Story Tried to Achieve

I thought there would be more business ideas but that honestly isn't the major part of the story. The business details are there with planning, projections, profit and stuff but we don't go into the day-to-day or the nitty gritty of it all which is sad. At the end, lots of the relatives were given ideas to make money. The execution of the business idea felt too unrealistically smooth. There were no true objections by the old fashioned relatives. I would have thought that there would have been more pushback or some diversity in how they reacted. It was too much wish fulfilment at the end. Especially like the eldest sister and her husband. Their characters until the end, are too rural and too easily bullied to handle something like a high-end luxury hotel. The business and the people are too clashing.

For the romance, unfortunately, in bed, the MC is that shy blushing wife that the husband will go crazy in bed for. When she says anything discouraging in bed, the husband gets even more excited about doing it. So the next day, everything aches and the MC angrily beats him. But the husband just grins and takes it as a joke and congratulates himself by saying overindulgence is also good *rolls eyes hard*. Other than that, the ML is pretty good as a husband. I actually like his personality here more than the ML in Back to the Sixties, Get Wealthy, Raise Cubs because over there the male ego, daughter adoration is worse lol.

The child that MC had was not because ML wanted to stop her dreams or anything, MC said that she was following the method of protection of her period to avoid getting pregnant which is not very effective as pills or cond*ms, which after a few months of marriage she complains pregnant, ML supported with all his heart to MC left a steady job to go to study with her not to stop her future, until the end of the novel they didn't have more children because the ML considered that he didn't want MC to go through all the pain that pregnancy implied, I don't understand which novel the person of the comment below read but considering that I read the whole novel and I didn't see anything about her, I think that we just read different novels.

It was quite.... okay. I like that MC and ML did not take the path of black market and instead chose to do everything the legal way. Most of the novels with this theme chose to partake in black market and take advantage of the developing period so this was an interesting take. But.

There was no real conflict per say. Everything was too smooth. The ex-wife? The ex-husband? The narrow minded sister-in-law and annoying neighbor? Even the males who were in love with MC in college or the new son... more>> that was reluctant to accept his new mother fully. Everything comes and goes in a chapter. There is no drama. It becomes super boring and monotonous.

I waited 50+ chapters for ex-wife to show only for her to leave in 3 paragraphs.

The characters basically flat-lined in a few lines and MC had no real challenge in her life. She is also kind of a Mary Sue. All she touches becomes gold easily.

She legit takes her whole family to develop further and not a single one of them face failures and they all miraculously turn from farmers to rich tycoons. Make it make sense?

There was a lot of lost potential and plot holes. All in all it was super boring. <<less
