Cha Gweonwoo, an S-class esper who treats Kim Dowon, his dedicated guide, like an IV drip walking around the institute without ever exchanging a word with him. Their peaceful daily life is interrupted by Gweonwoo’s rampage and memory loss. Faced with a situation where they have to stabilize the lost memories and abilities due to the rampage’s aftermath within a month through guiding, Dowon is at a loss, and Gweonwoo is left with memories only up until he was twenty. Where is the fate of these two headed?

[Preview]

“Were we really nothing to each other?”

Huh? Blinking my eyes, Cha Gweonwoo hummed, his voice low, and looked at me with a deeply troubled face, resting his chin.

“Then why are you so distant with me?”

“……”

“Did I annoy you by following you around?”

“……”

“If not that, then could it be… we dated and broke up?”

This is driving me crazy. Gweonwoo, what on earth are you talking about? I was at a loss for words at his attitude, 100% certain, no, 1000% certain that he liked me before losing his memory. Asking if he followed me around because he liked me! Asking if we dated and broke up! He’s seriously misunderstanding something right now. Our genre obviously wasn’t that from the start! No, don’t people usually not think the genre would be that way?! Why is his mind jumping there?!

Before he could go further down the wrong path, I hurried to correct the signpost.

“That’s not it, Mr. Cha Gweonwoo disliked me.”

Mr. Cha Gweonwoo, that’s not the right direction. Come this way. I even gestured, telling him it’s not that way and to come here, but Cha Gweonwoo asked as if wronged, like a soccer player who scored an own goal and is asking why it’s an own goal.

“Me? Why?”

…No, why are you asking me that?

I mean.... I was kinda enjoying until around chapter 50.

Haa... Alright. So, our MC has a rather frosty relationship with the ML, bc ML literally never spoke a word to him for two whole years, gave the impression of hating any physical contact with him, and had no respect for MC's time (and life, honestly). After losing his memory, he does a total 180. Pretty typical, and there's plenty of hints and implications that he cared for MC to some extent. His coworkers seem to recognize MC on sight... more>> bc ML talked about him so much, so they believe they must have a great relationship. (Even when MC denies it.)

However. ML doesn't listen to MC. He's jealous and possessive to the point that if someone even touches MC, he assumes MC is "playing around" and will not let him speak to even try and defend himself or explain. He is insistent on clinging to him like a barnacle, getting in MC's personal space even when he says he's uncomfortable. Around the time of chapter 40 or so, ML starts forcing kisses. MC had initiated them after ML had a bad attack, concerned for his well-being and trying to do his job of caring for ML as his guide. But as things progress, he starts getting pushier and pushier. Eventually.... (non-con spoilers ahead)

Spoiler

Around chapter 60, he just straight up r*pes MC. Like, in that way you typically see in J-novels and such. The blatant coercion, pushing forcefully past boundaries, not listening to MC asking him to stop.... The whole 9 yards. Originally, MC took meds that would "help the process along, " presumably a muscle relaxant and aphrodisiac of some sort. After this, ML continues to assault him, with MC deluded by either medically enhanced or genuine pleasure. He f*cks MC so often that he's actually missing meals, waking up hours later in discomfort and absolutely ravenous. He also continues to ignore the boundaries MC tries to set. Here's an excerpt, removing all but the dialogue to keep it succinct:

    • MC: "I'm going to sleep. Really don't touch me today."
    • ML: "Okay"
    • ML: "I just have to hold back until midnight, right?"
    • MC: "How can you say that? We agreed not to do anything today!"
    • Ml: "So that's today. In an hour it'll be tomorrow, right?"

Oh my God.

He proceeds to touch him at 12:01. Of course. And this is just an ongoing thing.

[collapse]

So while all this... idk, trying to woo MC? going on, everyone's trying to get him to regain his memories. Even MC, to some extent. What it really is, with MC, is that he's in constant fear of him remembering and then doing something terrible to him bc of anger over the situation and how he acted/what they did together (even with pretty much everything instigated by ML). He's scared of getting attached and then losing it all. This concern is not unfounded, though.

Spoiler

Occasionally ML has regained his memories very briefly, but when this happens in MC's presence, he always ends up hurt. The last time this happens (at time of review) ML realizes he must have done something and pesters MC about it to figure it out. He even asks "Or did I force myself on you when you said no?" And I was amazed at the sheer gall of that question.

[collapse]

We get more hints as we go along that ML has a somewhat tragic past, and maybe there's a reason he doesn't want to remember. But the thing is... while the fear and trauma we may see glimpses of in the beginning were probably genuine, he - very obviously - starts manipulating MC with these feelings. Maybe he's genuinely still struggling with it, but I'm not gonna give a sh*t once you start weaponizing it. I've seen too much sh*t in my time in therapy (for myself and others) to find this permissible. MC is genuinely a pretty good guy, just trying to do his best and struggles when he sees someone suffering, especially with someone he's contractually obligated to care for, even if that person has been terrible to him in the past. And if you think you can read this and honestly tell me that ML isn't using manipulation, coercion, projection, guilt-tripping, and his greater authority/power to get his way, I can recommend you some reading material. Like the DSM-5 (-TR).

I really wanted to like this, but I cannot, in good conscious, recommend this. Honestly, MC is doing his best to maintain a backbone, and with all the sh*t ML is doing, well... I'm really hoping for an arc where MC just leaves. Maybe an arc after that with ML crawling on his knees and learning to actually f*cking listen to someone he allegedly cares about. If this just continues in the typical way, where MC ends like "oh I guess I like him, maybe I've liked him this whole time?" Stockholm Syndrome bullshit, and ML never learns a single lesson about respecting boundaries and shit, I'm going to be very upset, and very disappointed. On hold for now, but will drop if I find spoilers and learn that I will be disappointed. <<less

*dropped - If you don't mind red flags and what comes with it in at least half of the guideverse novels, then go ahead. We've all seen questionable things as BL readers and there are much more toxic relationships on the market, so don't let my review hold you back. *

Up to Ch39 or so, it was rather interesting and comforting. I thought that it may turn out to be a fluffy story that gives you diabetes. Like, I was actually impressed as - compared to other guideverse stories -... more>> their relationship seemed to progress at a reasonable pace. There was no r@pe either, just some mild obsession (?), I guess, and the situation kinda justified it so I was fine with it. But it turned pretty dark pretty fast and I felt like I was slapped. I should have known, though. Amnesia, bl, guideverse... the tags were already raising flags. 😂

(I actually read it past chapter 70 or so, but I decided to live in denial and only acknowledge the good times. XD)

By BL standards, the story is rather good, I'm only leaving because I came in hopes of some fluff for a change instead of the usual... things. <<less

I loved this story; it's easily one of my favorite guideverse. Solid 9/10 ⭐️.

That being said, I can see why some people don't, especially given that what I'd consider the worst part of it is roughly the first third of the novel (leading people to drop before it "gets good"). So let's get the bad out of the way before I start gushing about why I love it.

Is the ML a green flag? Nope, I wouldn't dare call him one. Although he has his moments and it's difficult to categorize... more>> him given the memory loss shenanigans central to the plot, if I absolutely had to, I'd say he leans most toward a soft yandere. Does the ML start out as a manipulative lil shit? Yes, yes he does; I can't really defend him there. He's (mentally) an immature kid, fresh out of his teens, thrust into a bewildering and traumatic situation and he behaves like it- acting immature and occasionally selfish and latching on with a deathgrip to the only emotional support he's got, the MC.

And how I love the MC. He's neither some cool, op badass nor trembling damsel in need of saving, he's just an average guy trying to collect his paycheck (for a reasonable amount of work), pass his classes, and eat his body weight in food at every meal. Talk about relatable life goals. He's also funny af with all his silly little asides and anecdotes. While their relationship starts off very "contractually" at first, with the MC just trying to fulfill his job duties, he very quickly starts to care about the ML as a person. As they grow closer, their dynamic is actually pretty cute at times, with the guide fussing over and coddling the big, bad s-rank esper.

This unexpected cuteness, along with both characters' emotional vulnerability, their bumbling first attempts at a relationship, and the story's focus on character growth/trauma healing are all extremely refreshing in a genre that usually leans hard into power fantasy tropes.

That's about all I can say without going into spoiler territory, so I'll try to keep this next bit as concise as possible:

Spoiler

The ML's memory loss is only the first arc of the story. It really takes off after he gets it back. After that and the (thankfully short) awkward, angsty transition arc, all of the things I disliked about the ML (the immaturity, the manipulativeness, the selfishness) all fall away and he becomes probably my favorite esper ML, ever. He's sweet and doting and utterly obsessed with the MC's physical and emotional well-being. After nearly a decade of being completely emotionally cut-off, he's painfully and at times adorably awkward in his affection, but entirely earnest. The MC is a chaotic mess of emotions, but always quickly works out what he really wants and then goes for it wholeheartedly.

The soft yandere ML comes into play in his extreme overprotectiveness and occasional possessive tendencies, which is honestly understandable given the fact that the poor boy is an entire layered cake of trauma and loss. If the first arc is uncovering the ML's trauma, the last two-thirds of it are he and the MC figuring out how to live with it (as opposed to bottling it up) and fall in love in spite of it. It's not one of those stories where love magically heals all wounds, and both characters have to work for their happy ending, something I really appreciated.

The side stories where we finally get the ML's pov are absolute gold. I cried.

[collapse]

And finally, regarding the s*x scenes, I'll be blunt:

Spoiler

The MC likes it rough. He often says contradictory things like "No. Yes." or "Wait. Faster." all in the same breath but he is enthusiastic in pursuing s*x with the ML and often initiates or eggs him on. At one point he has a wet dream of the ML in which they have s*x so rough he "can't tell if what he was feeling was pain or pleasure". The ML, for his part, often checks in and waits/backs off as needed. It's even addressed in the ML's pov side story that he's aware of the MC's preferences and has to be careful to make sure he's not actually hurting him.

I like these kinds of stories, the MC is very cute and it is totally understandable that the reason he sometimes backs off with the ML is because he is afraid that he will recover his memories and abandon him. The ML is an obsessive but he really is one of my favorites.

I really love this couple and how they love and take care of each other.

The ML at first my see like a "red flag" in the beginning but if you read after chapter 85 you will realize he is just a soft guy who just want to be love and protect the MC. The side story is also great to understand more about ML love for MC.

This novel worth my re-read. I love the growth of both lead characters and how both love each other.

the price of the esper have to pay each time they use their abilities kinda hard for me to take. But both of them can overcome this difficulty and tried to walk forward bravely amidst lots of difficulty they face each day
