Shimotsuki-san Likes the Mob (WN)

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

When I met him, I realized that I was a ‘mob character’.

My childhood friend, my best friend, my stepsister, and everyone else fell in love with him.

But there was one girl who showed a completely separate face only in front of me.

I’m not sure what to make of it.

Normally she doesn’t talk much, but she’s all talk when she’s in front of me.

She smiles only at me.

Even though she was the main heroine, she fell in love with me, a mob character–this is my story.

This is a romantic comedy about a dull mob character.

hmm, I will rate this 5 stars because I can read this in my short free time, each chapter is quite short and if you want a long chapter, then this is no for you. I feel the way FMC acts is cute but the main character is disappointing. He keep thinking he is just a Mob and he can not do the things he want. But this gets a LN so I dom't think they will just pick a garbage. The LN may have corrections and improve the contents.... more>> I will just give it a five star to see if it is improved or not <<less

I rarely review anything like this but this novel is just so bad that I dropped it after the third volume of the novel.

First thing first, the premise was pretty good. The set up was there, each character did or will at least show some roll.

However, as the story progress, we see little change in the MC, and from top to bottom the way that he thinks and act is obviously pathetic. I mean you can adopt the Mob way of thinking, but at least you already put him on... more>> as the MC, so write him as one :D Following a story where the MC doesn't do enough, characters and their ending are terrible, and just prolong the story based on the simple concepts of Mobs and the toxic Harem guy sucks :/ It doesn't show any good way of thinking, reading it feels like being intoxicated @@

Also some of the parts of the story feels very random, wasnt explained well enough. The ending and development for other characters is also a minus sign because they affected the story a lot.

Overall I would not recommend it to anyone, you can still try it tho but just remember that you have been warned =)))))))) <<less

Its a bit of a difficult judge this.

The main protagonist is the typical ordinary boy, and the female protagonist is the typical "out of the world" type character. While they are not suited for each other in a "typical" sense, seeing their love is what makes the story interesting, and thats why even if the outcome of their relationship is obvious after you read the first two Volume, you cant help but want to read to "see" that conclusion become reality.

Homever, the story has some massive negative points... more>> that makes the reader (or at least just in my part) massivly uncomfortable. For example:

Spoiler

After a while every "subheroine" gets a bit of a redemtion. Kotaris stepsister, Azusa gets it after he gets dumped and realises that Kotaro always cared for her and was her brother in the truest sense. Kirari, the former best friend after a wake up call from Kotaro, realises that he was a fool trying to self deny herself and with that process what truly is lost. At the moment the childhood friend Yuzukis redemption is still nowhere but I feel like she gonna get one too. And thats fine with me, but till today the only one thats got an acceptable end is Azusa only.

The story in my point of wiev for so far to them is like:

- Azusa: after experiencing the indifference towards her and the broken heart, she gradually recovers thanks to Kotaro and Shiho, then get pulled back to doubts (that sceene really made my heart hurt considering I have siblings to), and in the end she makes a "clean" break with Ryuzaki, and hopefully have a nice life. This is what I think is an acceptable ending for her

- Kirari: after Kotaro wake her up in the cultural festival (forcefull method aside), she finally realized shes not need to cling to Ryuzaki for affection and perfectly fine of how she is both with before and with now. Her merging personality is not a bad idea in my eyes, but theres a fatal flaw. Namely: When she realized that she was enjoyed her time back in middle school because Kotaro is by her side, that hinted more of romantic feelings than simple feelings of friendship. And even the author affirmed this in the "break up" sceene with Kotaro. Thats why I cant accept her saying what she said for Ryuzaki, essentially picking him up. I not have a problem with her helping him, the problem is the sentence she said to him. That "No matter what you do, I will always love you" is feels kind of forced to her. Its like the author trying to sacrifice her just to get somewhere with the characterdevelopment. And honestly that makes your stomach twist. I really feelt her pain when she was ignored back then, and her sadnes when she realised her feelings and came to her "self", but after all that to make her a convinience again is just like saying: okay, thank you, you are great, but time to go back to your original role. It felt that she just got a mashed up personality of how she was in middle and highschool, a bit more matured, but ultimatly she was tossed back to where she was. So I ask then: what was the point of making a redemption to her. Azusa got a clear break of but she not. And I am afraid that the same gonna happen to Yuzuki. The author somehow make her overcome her dependency problem, but still tossing her back to Ryoma.

Speaking of the antagonist Ryuzaki: Hes a total mess. Its interesting seeing her character development, but if the author planning to leave one of the so called subheroines in his side then its a massivly bad idea. Why? Because simply speaking hes not reliable. Thats show exactly when Kotaro tryes to talk to him about the girls, but he refuses to listen because of his pride and superiority complex. When he calls the girls Kotaro's hand-me-downs that was the point where I felt: why the hell did I ever want a normal ending for him to. And that pride shows earlier too. When shiho talks to him to get back on his feet and act like he used to. He always remembers of what Kotaro said to him but only accept them when Shiho is the on that says it to him. The same as when Kirari comfronts him. The inability to listen to anyone, even if the other person is someone he hates for the sake of his "loved" ones is a massive problem. Even when she "helps" Shiho and Kotaro, after realizing what he can do there is a hint of a bit of arrogance in him.

The other thing that irked me in him is: He and Kotaro are essentially the same. Different but albeit the same circumtances (like for example Ryuzaki lost her family members, while Kotaro not get affection from her mother, making them essentially a same without familyal support) but still as I can progressed with the chapters I honestly can only see Kotaro in a far better person than him. Ryuzaki has that superpower like charm that literally make a person change in a split second, while Kotaro has a level of empathy that really made me want to cry sometimes. So yeah sometimes it felt like Ryuzaki is just a convinient excuse.

And speaking of Kotaro: he too is a bit flaved. Theres no "perfect" protagonist, but when he said he had special feelings for the subheroines but not love I actually accepted it, until the Kirari memory part. If her change is shocked him so much that he had a bad feeling then that is clearly like. The same with the Yuzuki part. Azusa is only loved by him as a little sister so in her part its understandable.

The other annoying aspect is the subcharacter Mary. She helped when the MC is in pain, but at least her story is finished. But shes stil get pulled back and I dont se the reason why. Shes not changed after what happened and while the other subcharacter that "planned to be" Kotaros other love interest left to who knows where she is still here.

[collapse]

So to be honest the plot is stretching out unnecesary. The redemption of the subheroins is good but for some its literally pointles. The novel is really just want you to be there to see the ending thats why it hints some future shorts, but thats it. <<less

I've only read the first volume, the plot itself was fine, but the author just have horrible character writing, there's not even a single likable persona in the whole cast.

Spoiler

The protagonist, self-styled "mob", can't spend a whole page without over monologuing, feels like 20 to 30% of the history is him rambling about something he said over three times last five minutes.

His sister/childhood friend/"best friend" couldn't be more caricaturesque bad, they barely exist in the history, the moment they saw the 'MC' they just ghosted the MC and said they would never have any relationship with any other man so the guy could appeal to the guy, his step-sister, in particular, barely ever sleeps in their own house and forbids the MC to talk they are related.

The 'harem-MC' has that plot armor on his for everything except the main heroine and acts like an a**hole

The heroine character and personality are also weak IMO

Remove this from the romance genre and put it in the psychological genre instead. There's barely any romance and all this talk about "x character's romantic comedy" being outright said as if the characters are aware they are in a story is just really off-putting. At best, this story could get the romantic subplot tag.

Mary's arc sucks something fierce and had no right to go on for as long as it did. 20 chapters would have sufficed for this smelly turd of a story. Mary as a character also pissed me off so much, she is one of the few antagonists in a non action story whom I actually wish death upon. She really is that bad.

the romcom element is "okay" level. the first arc is quite entertaining to read.

but when Mary arc came in, everything become much havier to follow. the problem that follows around Ryuzaki's harem turned from mundane, to much psychological.

we indeed showed how Kotaro would solve the problem and countered every scheme. but in turn we are showed how big the gap of interpersonal skill and intelligence in Kotaro's persona. and it's quite weird seeing how Kotaro become like that with his average intelligence he showed at the first arc (he's more... more>> emotional driven guy).

as for character :

Shimotsuki : I see her as a sweet girl at first. but the yandere factor a little bit ruined her personality (it might be due to my own opinion) she's a talk active, or for me she's like super duper naggy girl (her family too) it's sadly shown in her interaction with Kotaro.

Kotaro : a self proclaimed "mob" in time he's a secret interpersonal psychological genius (lol) but he could turned into a lump of stone that always do alot of inner monologues when facing Shimotsuki (and her families) which is soo weird.

storywise,

in some parts it's an ordinary school life, but in the other chapter it's full of deeper and havier problem (trick and scheme) that for me, it's such unnecessary thing to escalate problem to those degree. in turn Shimotsuki thrown out of the picture, and back as a little comic relief.

The romance,

i can't say it's sugary. it's just a romance who seems sugary from the outside, but in fact it's cringeworthy due to the extremity of Shimotsuki yandere personae and "the peeble on the roadside" personality of Kotaro which make "depiction" of this couple is quite hard to imagine. the interaction are one sided, which lacks of strawberry atmosphere.... in short... it's so weird.

truly a series with a weird couple. <<less

5 mins in and I got brain damage, flashing bo*bs, trying to seduce acting like prost*tues and the MC be like I should be the one in his position. I am dropping it I got to know the personality of the MC 'a jealous little b*tch'. If he had more of an indifferent personality. I would've surely given it a read. Otherwise its a torture.

I rarely, if at all, do reviews for novels but this one is too... weirdly perfect not to comment on.

Firstly, word of advice from me, the best way to read this web/light novel is to dissociate any realistic parallels that otherwise you normally might have. Read it purely as a story, where characters do the things they do for narrative purposes (like a villain monologue-ing their entire plan instead of killing the hero). In a nutshell, the characters are difficult to empathize with, the story lacks realism, and the plot... more>> lines both lost the escapism and the ability to fantasize which are usually the reasons for us being on this website.

What this story offers instead is an extremely "meta" take, for a lack of a better word, on what character labels are to Japanese web/light novels. I at first thought it was the author's lack of writing skill, but by ch82 I can't help but wonder if it's perhaps the author's intent to represent their characters in such a way. From how they seem extremely narrow-minded, or either appearing shallow/"locked in mindset", I'd want to say the author might have given hierarchical roles commonly ingrained in light novels a satirical spotlight. If not, perhaps playing with such character labels is the whole point of this novel. All their pertaining actions is limited to what common web/light novel tropes would have. A mob is treated poorly with supposedly little to no impact. The main heroine is her own perfect trope, where every action is purely to highlight it. A supposed harem protagonist is given his seemingly perfect and commonly dislikable traits, even if the plot eventually derails him from it. Sub heroines are like fodder to the harem. With sprinkles of character development, it's almost as if the story wants to say there does exist a "rom-com" god. The second arc highly represents this (with even an interlude of a supposed "third-party view").

My review? If strange or maybe even unique novels are within your preview, give this one a try. While it might be written like a typical rom com (and difficult to like as one), "meta" reading it and treating the characters as pieces in a plot (dissociating reality) honestly makes the read somehow enjoyable. Identifying how Japanese novels ingrain specific character roles, tropes, or labels in stories is fun since the novel directly references them. It might even influence how you see other Japanese light/web novels. Personally I've become curious as to why such hierarchical labels are ever so prevalent in these stories directly (how it became a way of thinking for people). Hence the 3 star rating. It fails as a generic fluff/revenge rom-com novel but weirdly succeeds in drawing attention satirically to the character labels Japanese web/light novels grew to love.

If you're looking for your enjoyments, though, I'd steer away from the story to save your time as, depicted clearly in other reviews, it's exactly as people describe it. <<less

I'll say this again I enjoyed Ryomas Redemption. He clearly acknowledged his faults and mistakes and eventually grew up and matured. Do I like him? Hell no. Yes, I enjoyed his redemption, but the author portrayed his ending is that the he's still has choices for heroines: ... more>>
Spoiler

Kirari and yuzuki eventually still liked Ryoma with Azusa leaving due to her twisted childhood and portrayal of him. She let go and I really Applaud her with that. Now that leaves us with 2 heroines, Yuzuki and Kiraria.

Yuzuki seems fine because she's the least developed character shes the epitome of a hand me down heroine (literally what Ryoma called them). Her past is meh typical sad heroine. Her connection with the MC is superficial at best

Kirari should have deserved better. Her entire character has been wasted because of this. I love her as a character she matured throughout the novel, admitting she changed too much for the sake of one person who can not even reciprocate or tell them. BUT EVEN THAT, she still came back to liking Ryoma like WHAT???. My brain exploded after that.

You know the irony is there is one moment when Shiho confronted the pink hair girl about her superficial feelings with the MC (TLDR this an Arc in itself but pink hair 'liked' koutaro because something is making her like him once ryoma try one good thing about the pink hair she immediately fallen in love with Ryoma making question her feelings with koutaro and is ambushed by Shiho) Shiho literally says to her that Yes Love will be irrational but everyone falls in love with a reason. Human will always rationalise their decision. As such, why did Kirari like Ryoma. Azuda realised her feelings about her brother complex. Yuzuki herself says that she likes Ryomas naivety. But what about kirari. They literally didn't explain it properly. Is it because her personality of being persistent and determined? NO..... author should have just let Kirari leave the harem group as well and find her own love. letting Ryoma with just Yuzuki

Additionally, Koutaros' behaviour during the Mary Arc and afterwards was very much insufferable

[collapse]

Overall, I enjoyed the first few 100 chapters of the WN due to the Meta narrative and author breaking the 4th wall ordeal I like the risky decision but this technique is used too much as its main theme throughout a 300+ when you literally see the MCs reasoning behind his actions he keep repeating the same phrase over and over and over... <<less

I hate the MC constant whining. Every damn chapter (?), the author needs to remind the readers that the MC is a mob. Self-pitying at its finest. Feel like all of his former harem obliged to love him forever and he's jealous that another person got their attention, he should just move on and focus on his feeling toward the FML. I read KR novel which have the same premise but I like KR one because he just moved on and indifferent toward the heroines

If you read carefully Mary's part during the School Festival,

you will know the truth.

Mary initially fell in love with Ryu, but that changed after seeing Ryu who was only selfish, and rejected his confession,

and also that she was really in love with Koutarou, who saw her as a caring and affectionate person who kept her from feeling bored.

This novel has a interesting way of using the matter of perspective, since the main character is thrusted to the role of a"mob", or more of a secondary character, equivalent of love rivals of the MC of a romcom, like Mikawa Kai from Seto no Hanayome (not personality-wise, position-wise). There are reasons for this and why characters' viewpoints are twisted to that they're viewing it under the lense of romcoms and their character development are tied into it (especially Kotaro, Kirari and that other "heroine")

Spoiler

The character comparing themselves and their situation to LN romcoms is part of the problem that gets solved later. It was intentional to have the character think that way. Kirari and Azusa arcs were pretty good. Kirari tackles of the issue of being true to yourself while Azusa tackles the idea of replacing a lost loved one and the pain of turndown and moving forward past her heartbreak.

Kotaro's arcs were also pretty nice too, tackling mainly on self-worth and growing out of the romcom perspective and negative viewpoint

[collapse]

Now for its flaws.

The story has some pretty big problems. I think the author drags some of the arcs too long and some of past events keeps being dredged up. You don't need to repeat it like 3 times, people get the idea as to what happened. Frankly those events should've been covered only in the "recollection" arc. Filler arcs also gets dragged out WAY too much, it was honestly annoying and painful to read them.

Spoiler

Also characters like Yuzuki really needed more fleshing out, I know her character development was brought about by Ryouma (since she is framed as the central heroine for Ryouma's "story", her character development is more or less off-screen which is why Kotaro left it to him to fix her arc/problem), but quite frankly it's still the weakest, just chalking it up to "she has a strong core" in the end, the other two "main" heroine arcs were better. It probably would've been better if she had a big "fall" arc too like the two (probably tackle on that personality of her wanting to be needed but it seems like Ryouma already fixed that during those off-screen moments, at least for now. It would be interesting if Ryouma didn't choose her and chose Kirari though, I can picture the author making scenarios about it). I think Shimotsuki herself could also needs a better fleshing out too. She's a bit too "developed", leaving only little to expect something more from her and whenever there's a development for her, the pace is kind of rushed.

[collapse]

Overall it has a pretty interesting take on the RomCom perspective and had a lot of potential, but it failed to deliver or messed on certain parts a lot. Also, did I already mention those fillers were annoying? <<less

The story is good when its the MC and his female lead... the other girls in his life are just pure tr*sh... even the sister is tr*sh... I am more surprised he forgive his step sister... because he also has the right to treat her as a stranger if he wanted to since they aren't really family.... and tbh the chapters where its about the other tr*sh girls, I rather just skip them... since most of them are insignificant to the main story...

It's a subversion of the harem romcom genre. As is common in subversions (for other examples see Neon Genesis Evangelion (mecha genre), Puella Magi Madoka Magica (magical girl genre) or Doki Doki Literature Club (also harem romcom)), the normal roles and the characters that inhabit them are often somehow corrupted and twisted, and standard hero-villain relationships are turned upside down and problematized in various ways. Very enjoyable read if you are familiar with the common tropes of the genre, in my opinion.

It’s no 1*, but it’s also not 5*. I’m being decently generous with a 4*.

Despite the MC not being the ‘harem protagonist’ he certainly thinks a lot like one. He’s kinda s*upid, spineless, and irritating, but with enough moments of intelligence, courage, and involvement to keep me reading for long enough to get tired of it before I put it down. There was no one moment of ‘this is crap’ that made me put it down. I just felt like there wasn’t a point.

The story is interesting as much as weird it is. The MC is a bit of a downer but maybe he gets better as shown in glimpses of future chapters in the raws. Its basically an okay read if you have free time. Its a bit similar to another fantasy novel where MC feels like mob chara.
