This novel is about the son of a Celestial Emperor that learned basically everything. From the beginning of the novel, you would expect this to be one of humor, but as you progress, it is more of the generic reincarnation type. The novel has some interesting world building and aspects about alchemy, though it could be improved. Personally, I'm a sucker for these types of novels. However, the author likes to drag out events and this novel would be perfect for people who like to stockpile chapters. The first story arc of this novel is quite interesting. We're introduced to a large cast, and the author makes good use of this setting to showcase not just the main character, Jiang Chen, but also that of the people close to him. Based on how that entire arc went, I'd probably rate it 4-4.5 out of 5 stars. However, the quality of the story quickly drops after that, resulting in my 3-star score.

His allies become useless, and end up serving as reasons for others to antagonize them, thereby antagonizing... more>> Jiang Chen, resulting in the latter humiliate them in some form of fashion.

While it's entertaining to watch Jiang Chen repeatedly humiliate people with his superior intellect, it can become tiresome as well, especially when the author tends to repeat the story beats of: Arrogant strangers antagonize Jiang Chen or his followers, thereby becoming enemies with the group. Then Jiang Chen shows off how much smarter he is, and blasts through the new cultivation realm that is commonplace in the new town that Jiang Chen stops by, but almost legendary to the people in the previous town.

To me, the issue with his followers becoming useless in order to show how much better the protagonist is that Jiang Chen has to pretty much carry the entire novel on his shoulders. Maybe it is possible for a single character to shine for nearly a thousand chapters without it seeming tiresome or repetitive, but that doesn't happen in this novel. It may be made more apparent due to the fact, that the author did highlight the personalities and capabilities of the other characters in the first arc.

By adding more content for secondary characters in the story, the author could compensate for the repetitive story beats by making some story-lines longer due to more exposure on the other characters.

So that really highlights the weakness/difficulty of this webnovel format, where the author has to churn out a new chapter every day and repeats story beats as a result in order to buy time, so that he can come up with better content to advance the main plot.

Fortunately, these issues are somewhat remedied later on. But no novel should have to require a reader to read nearly a thousand chapters to discover someone other than the main character that's competent.

When it comes to the physical and verbal battles, I'd have to say that I by far prefer the latter. The physical battles usually take several chapters to finish without any excitement on my part, due to the fact that his smarts and bag of tricks being enough to get him through any fight without any consequences. So it's a bit hard to be excited about those fights in any way whatsoever, especially because they tend to be dragged out as well. Sometimes those reasons are implemented into the story in the sense of Jiang Chen wanting to see everything his opponents bring out everything they've got.

When it comes to the verbal fights, others can technically mess with Jiang Chen, and while JC does retaliate, it is always a joy to see the way in which he chooses to humiliate his opponents and the flowery words he uses to verbally humiliate them. The verbal fights also take up far less chapters than the physical ones, yet accomplish at least just as much, if not more.

So all in all, I'd say that this is a very binge-able webnovel, and I prefer it being read that way instead of just one or two chapters a day. It isn't particularly deep or thought-provoking, but not all novels have to be. It's good fun, if your expectations aren't too high.

Even though this review puts a lot of spotlight on the negative aspects, I think it's easier if you gain an understanding of them through this review in order to determine whether they're bearable or not. <<less

When you read the plot synopsis of SOTR it seems promising... and the premise is actually good enough to have been developed into a brilliant novel by a good author... but sadly SOTR feels like a beta version of Emperor's Domination... SOTR's author Li Tian, just like the author of ED, seems to have mastered the dao of word count, so much so that the readers feel cheated as entire chapters go without anything substantial happening and endless repetitions of plot structures... and yeah childish plot twists...e.g.: ... more>>

The father, with his measly cultivation moving to the upper eight regions and threatening su*cide if jiang chen searches for him... or for an enamoured Dan'er to have s*x with MC when he's conveniently affected by an aphrodisiac but since she is disguised he doesn't recognize her and she leaves him despite being pregnant only to be rescued by great emperor peafowl who adopts her despite her low level of cultivation... and of all places in upper eight region, MC conveniently joins peafowl's faction... well... talk about stretched plotlines

Jiang Chen always wins just like li qiye... but unlike the latter jiang chen is not mysterious to the reader at all... nor is he engaging enough... li qiye at least thrived for eons ruling over the ten worlds and now may utilize the myriad tools and connections he previously had... but Jiang Chen is an alien to this world... yet he always has just the required cultivation level or timely breakthrough or a ready helper to win... let's say the plot armour is ridiculous with this one

Jiang Chen was a universally acclaimed genius alchemist in his previous life... but at every step the author says how this or that pill requires this much cultivation for proper brewing... but if jiang chen couldn't even cultivate in his previous life how did he brew these back then? Not to mention the alchemy here is boring and lacks depth and more of an author's accomodation of a typical wuxia convention

Yet we continue to read it... why? Firstly due to the tremendous effort of etvolare's team and secondly because despite being reduced to mere passive readers we still seek a closure to something we've started while expecting that somewhere down the line the author, who IS imaginative (otherwise not possible to write so much) but not engaging enough, may have discovered his Midas' touch and rising up to the occasion written something worthy of such titanic effort on part of the translators and readers <<less

I will try to refrain from explaining the story again in this review and just sumarise my experience with this novel. Also, apologise for my bad english.

First of all I'm not too well-versed in wuxia novels, I started reading them recently so some of my critiques may be characteristhics about the genre,

The premise of the story is really interesting, but it takes too long to develop and get to the main point. Lots of episodes of the novel are inconsequential filler, while opportunities to develop the world or explain... more>> the strength levels and training methods in a detailed fashion are lost, leaving a superficially explained world.

Our protagonist, Jiang Chen, is a the son of the Celestial Emperor. Someone who has lived for millions of years with the highest of educations. Yet his train of thought sometimes seems immature even for an adult, showing the lack of creativity of the author to implement all the possibilities, except pill dao and formations, into the story. He has a heaven-defying knowledge combined with a brain of a 20 year-old. Also, for someone who has been cursing the heavens for being unable to cultivate martial dao for milions of years, he seems to lack "ambition" in his search for new heights and seems to take it with calm.

During this +1000 chapters he manages to acquire great treasures and companions, yet he forgets about some of them, I don't even remember the rats already or the nameless sword.

Does this mean it's a bad novel? NOPE. I think it's interesting and always takes new things to keep it entretaining. What it really gets on my nerves is amount of unnecesary filler which takes you out of the story. If you like the genre and c*cky MC's that are always one step ahed... Give it a try!

A pretty good story that I've enjoyed reading, and the translation is good with notes of some things that would otherwise get lost in translation such as some puns or references.

Plotwise SoTR has been about average or above average among Chinese Novels of the genre, with the good and bad that comes along with that. An example being there have been frequent "arrogant young masters" that just show up to act like a jerk and then be promptly (or after a slight delay depending on the person) slapped by the... more>> main character (MC), either figuratively or literally (losing reputation or getting beaten up). This thankfully hasn't been *all* of the antagonists though, and there have been a fair number of them that actually cut their losses and try to leave while alive rather than fighting to the death when it would be a losing situation for them, and some of them fade into obscurity with the MC's rising level of power.

Though suffering through many disasters that should be story ending, the MC has made it through relatively unharmed and it was actually noted as such in story during a conversation JC had with someone. There's been what...2-3 kingdom destructions, 2 sect wipeouts, various other disasters and other than JC being under a false identity at the moment he's still in one piece.

The current arc (s) have had JC under a false identity for.... several hundred chapters I think and it is getting a bit old for him to have to keep hiding, with the reasons being given at present being "may negatively affect those weaker than him that are affiliated with him since enemy sects will try any and all means to get even slight revenge against JC. The whole Dan Fei plotline is just a stagnating irritant that needs to be resolved in one manner or another, it's been several hundred since she disappeared while pregnant and now she's in the same city/location as JC and "plot" is keeping them apart, and from spoilers read in forums apparently will for several hundred chapters to come. At least he's met his daughter (unlike some other series MC's) though he doesn't know it was her at this point. At least now the current objective of JC is to find his father and mother, so that plot point from way back is starting to move forward.

Overall I would recommend this to someone if they enjoy the genre, it hasn't been super groundbreaking, but there have been some decent twists and overall the good of the story outweighs the annoyances <<less

I started reading SOTR over a year ago. I dropped it around chapter 700 for a few months and picked it back up. I really enjoy the reincarnation aspect that does not create an instant overpowered character. Even with his previous knowledge and experience, it still takes him time to grow. Some people may find the pacing repetitive as he meets challenges, overcomes challenges, fortuitous events, but I feel that the arc with Veluriyam capital is the true start of his journey.

I am looking forward to seeing how he grows... more>> and progresses through completion. Hopefully, the end is not as rushed as some other series appeared to be. <<less

Pretty good novel, but it really slow. Most of the chapters are build up, but if you are not a patient person, it is not the novel for you.

Interesting story. The story is really interesting though and has a lot of potential. The great thing about the MC is that he doesn't left behind his friends/followers. He granted them strength and takes them along for the journey. The downside is that the MC is too smart, thus nothing fazes him... his psychological state doesn't grow at all.

Pretty easily my favorite webnovel, thanks in no small part to the amazing efforts of etvo and team providing such an excellent translation and localization. The story isn't necessarily anything groundbreaking in terms of plot and overall story-line if you've read other wuxia/xianxia fare. However, the world-building and well-crafted characters really do a lot to set SOTR apart from it's peers. Jiang Chen is an honestly fun protagonist to read about and cheer on in his efforts and he's one of the rare genuinely good MCs in this genre. This is a story about how the MC was caned to death because he farted in a ceremony, then the son of the Celestial Emperor transmigrated into MC's body. Falling all the way to the bottom from the top, Jiang Chen aka JC (the MC) rejoiced in finding out he had the capability to cultivate (which he couldn't when he was son of God). There, he faces twist and turns on his journey to find out what exactly happen to the Heavenly Plane, while collecting his harem of old men... more>> along the way.

Personally, I loved how this story emphasized more on filial piety. JC was loved by his fathers both in his previous life and current life. His previous father's fate was unknown after a "cataclysm" befall on the Heavenly Plane, while his current father's fate was, as you guessed it, also unknown after chasing after his mom who had left them years ago.

There was not any established harem in the story, too. As of chapter 1023, JC had only imp**gnated a woman unconsciously, had a few women that followed him willingly, but stayed loyal to another woman that put on an ugly disguise. However, he tend to collect old men into his harem along the way. One thing I find quite irksome was how all the old men tend to have the same personality (wise, old, open-minded, <insert other traits you find in wise old men>).

Unfortunately, the story starts to lose it meanings later into the chapter (around 700-800) as the author starts to repeat events: 1) some bullies pick fight > 2) JC fights back > 3) bullies offended > 4) bullies get help from a stronger backer > 5) backer loses fight > 6) get help from stronger backer > 7) repeat steps 5 and 6 a few more times. The premise for the plot was grandiose, it can be seen from how the author set up the settings and environment in the first few chapters, then it went down the drain with senseless writing.

Wordings were repetitive. Much later into the series, reader can see how a point can be repeated 5-6 times in a chapter and brought up time and time again in the next few chapters. Unimportant characters were given too much spotlight, describing their frustration, thoughts, envy etc, etc. Each fights could take as much as 2-5 chapters to complete, even minor ones.

Along with the line, the characters introduced from the Skylaurel Kingdom onwards were bland. There was a great divide between the good guys and the bad guys. In fact, you can swap any of the good guys around and get pretty much the same story. Likewise, all the bad guys were either jealous, ignorant, or some stuck up second generations.

Up till the latest chapter (1023), I had yet to encounter an impacting event that touched me unlike AWE, ISSTH, CD, etc.

However, the translations by etvolare and team were great. The original meaning was preserved and the clever uses of idiom and humour kept reader interested. Kudos to the translators

TLDR, a good read early on, but don't keep your expectations high. Be prepared to throw away all your hopes for a well-written ending. I am already predicting a few major plot holes, loose ends, and a bad ending for this series. The translations were superb though. <<less

The translation quality for each chapter is consintently high quality, with very rare type-os, so in the translation department this is easily top quality and you could easily understand what is said wothout going through mental gymnastics.

When it comes to the characters it is ok. The main character is fleshed out enough so you can root for him and he does go through slow changes to his charater overtime, which is refreshing especially for wuxia novels the main characters don't change that often (or at least the ones i've read)... more>> so it is refreshing, however the side characters are very bland for the most part and are very forgettable with a few exceptions, where in those cases they do substantially add to the story.

The villains of this story are not good. They are one dimensional they do not provide any real threat to the main character (with the exception of 2 so far) and I never really got any sense of threat from them

BTW when it came to the 2 villains which really threatened they were really good, but [Spoiler Alert] they kill of the best villain really early on (compared to the size of the novel) and the other villain was a one trick pony who basically destroyed the myriad realm, but hasn't done anything else since.

The actual story arcs are actually pretty good, and you do get hooked on what will happen and the arc does not always go in the direction that you think it will go to, which adds unpredictability to the arcs and sometimes it does somewhat repeat a concept (i.e Main Character goes to a martial arts tournamet for reason X), but the arcs do diverge from the formula enough in which it gives the illusion that it is fresh.

So in conclusion it is a good enough novel to spend hours on end and still be entertained enough. <<less

Running off 6 hours of sleep in the last 3 days, bear with me x.x

SoTR started out really good for me, although it is a very typical cultivation novel. MC is very coolheaded and calculating which is probably the reason I enjoy it. First couple of baddies were great to read his struggles against, his first few followers had great substance and felt like they were actual people, his first few treasures actually felt like treasures.

As the story has continues though it seems like nothing has any foundations, bad guys... more>> walk in as super unbeatable geniuses only to be beaten in a chapter or two, new followers seem to be joining up so much I can hardly remember their names when they do popup every now and then, and JC has so many trump cards they're starting to overlap and render ones that he has hardly used as useless.

I really do enjoy the story and will be riding it out until the end but hopefully we start getting some substance again. <<less

What really strikes me as a pet peeve is how JC... more>> supposedly has the memory of his past reincarnation as the Celestial Emperor’s son with all the experience it gathers from it but supposedly still has just an above average mental fortitude. One would expect him to breeze past most difficulties involving mental tests but at times it seems like the author has made it difficult for the sake of difficulty in JC’s path.

TL;DR: Decent story (nothing special, quite typical), slow buildup for the first few 100 chapters. Still, intriguing protagonist and curious plotline that is worth following.

Story

In terms of storyline, SoTR follows the generic xianxia progression, and to be honest, apart from the curious background of the protagonist, most of it is rather cut and dry. If you're looking for a groundbreaking, unique story, this is not it.

However, this is not to say that SoTR is not well written. In fact, the writer is adept at creating many subplots that add... more>> to the overall scale of the story. While the main story follows the usual tropes in cultivation novels, as a reader, many "seeds" (hints, foreshadowing, etc) are sown throughout the early part of the novel (first few 100 chapters), which are later revisited in greater detail. This is one thing that I appreciate about this story - as it differs from other novels where characters and locations are introduced purely as stepping stones for the protagonist, after which they are treated as disposable and henceforth forgotten for the rest of the story.

Honestly, while this review might paint a rather bleak picture of SoTR, I still gave it a 4/5, and admittedly I've been reading it for quite a while now. If it were not worthy, why would I be still reading it, and much less be reviewing it?

The main allure of the story, for me, is the world that the author has created, and the mystery surrounding the protagonist. From the beginning, it was proven to me that the author weaves in subplots for a reason, and he faithfully revisits them (unlike other authors who might forget completely about certain characters mentioned early on). This gives me confidence that the story is worth investing my time in.

Characters

Honestly, the characters in the novel are not the most realistic and relatable. To clarify, as a reader who has seen most of the boneheaded, naive protagonists in battle LNs, I appreciate characters who deviate from the norm and instead think rationally to avoid battles (take Warlock of the Magus World for example). In this aspect, SoTR seems promising, although most of the time the main character just overwhelms others through the sheer amount of "trump cards" and treasures he possesses.

There are certain arcs where the protagonist displays his wit, but overall it seems pretty underwhelming, considering his background and actual age (apparently millions of years old). I'd expect more wisdom and cunning from someone who has lived that long without cultivating.

The other characters are not worth mentioning, as their thought processes are seldom explored, or are unsurprisingly shallow. Though the lack of depth to the one-dimensional side characters is a pity, as a whole it does not really hurt the story in terms of enjoyment.

Progression

Honestly, up till now, my criticisms of the novel were only minor issues that did not really affect my enjoyment of the story. The above issues I wrote about are actually trivial problems that only surfaced after thinking about my reading experience thus far. My only real gripe with this novel is the pacing which seems painfully slow and pointless. Some novels are slow for the sake of world-building, or character-building, or plot development. However, this novel seems to be painfully slow for no particular reason at all.

Perhaps, it is my lack of understanding as a reader, failing to grasp the author's motive. Still, to me, this problem has plagued this novel since the beginning, where obvious developments would drag out over the course of an excessive amount of chapters. This problem seems to ail many novels, perhaps as a result of the profitability that comes with the increased quantity of chapters (on the author's side).

The story only started to speed up after 500 or so chapters, and even then it hasn't really shown much improvement in the pace. Hopefully, it improves more after the 1000th chapter.

Translations

On a side note, kudos to the translator (volarenovels) for doing a great job with the novel. The accuracy of the idioms, the overall meaning and humour, etc. <<less

The shining point of this series lies in the story's constant focus of Jiang Chen and his character. We know about his background, his aspirations, his goals, and how he is going to obtain them since he slowly elaborates on an objective before going about it. Jiang Chen, despite not being able to cultivate in his previous life, is incredibly steadfast in maintaining the perfect foundation during his cultivation. This can be seen by his decision to put off advancing to the next stage, because he does not possess all the pieces required yet for a perfect breakthrough. Too frequently in xanxia, we witness protagonists having plot armor, or veering off from their original objective due to more convenient lucky encounters. In this story, the end goal is laid out, and the journey itself with the ups and downs, and immensely satisfying face-slapping accentuates Jiang Chen's conquest to reach the pinnacle.

The general reincarnation/transmigration premise has been used a thousand times over, always a tiny bit different. Every reincarnated MC has some sort of advantage, and our MC here is not much different.

Except for one thing.

For a reincarnation story, the memories he keeps with reincarnation aren't a massive boost, which makes things a lot more interesting. In other stories with a reincarnated MC (TDG, HSSB, RotH, etc.), the way the author balances out the "cheat" given to the MC is easy. The villains are now geniuses from other sects/sealed demons/other overpowered... more>> characters, characters which can still fight with the boosted MC evenly.

It's a lot different for this novel, and that makes the start a lot more slow. In a way, that's a lot better, but in a lot of other ways, not really. On one hand, the characters that were introduced were hard to forget, even after tens or hundreds of chapters without even a mention of them. On the other hand... umm...

Well, to be completely honest, during the slower sections of the novel (somewhere near chapter 500 or so, if my memory serves me correctly), I thought of dropping the novel because it was so. D*mn. Slow. I still kept reading though, and thank goodness, I'm a lot happier with the author's writing. The amount of filler has dropped, not to a minimum but it's a great improvement. The best part? There's actually plot points to look forward to! Wao!

The entire story has a really slow build. Like really slow. Not a bad story despite that, though. If you can get past that, there's a lot more humor and action to be had in this novel. Don't underestimate the momentum of a story with a build of hundreds of chapters.

If you have the time, I'd recommend the read. If not, I'd say try some other, more fast-paced novels. <<less

The novel is one that has great potential.

I won't lie and try to say it's perfect. It definitely has it's issues. Jiang Chen (MC) 's personality can at times seem so different in one arc compared to another. He's always tied down by small and trivial matters, only to have it grow into something bigger. However, I believe every novel has its own issue. Even with this, it's one worth the read.

Instead of having the MC be ridiculously angry with an... more>> enemy goal to pursue throughout his life, he has more a resolve to look for his broken family. While it's been going on for quite a while, it also gives us a sufficient reason for it be difficult to reach any clues as well. The character grows with a character that appeals to us in many ways. While being humble, he is also very adamant and headstrong as well with his own share of pride. Resolutely protecting those around him, he thinks like one above all as he is moved from domain to domain due to his irrational actions of friendship.

Another interesting point to keep an eye out for is that this novel doesn't have an ordinary harem. Instead he wins over enemies and allies alike under his banner using his own skill to convince them. Most of the time, they tend to be old men and you'll be able to notice the laughs people have over his old man harem as well. Of course you can't be an overpowered MC without having a few op pets and items right? He has those too. Along with knowledge that nobody he encounters could ever hope to measure up against due to his rebirth of being the son a Celestial Emperor and having lived over a million years in the past.

All in all, the novel's worth a read. It may not be the absolute best thing ever, but it's definitely not a waste of your time. It takes you on an adventure where you can grow with the MC and some parts that may even influence your own thought process in a few ways. I personally enjoy this novel a fair amount. I must say since the start of chapter 1 I hadn't encountered a plot quite like this one, which immediately got me hooked. The premise of a reincarnated son of a heavenly emperor really sounded grand. Also the heavenly catastrophe really sets the hipe, for the moment the MC finally ascends the heavenly plains to find out what is what. Reading how he uses his cunning to dominate is thrilling and refreshing as well.

However there are some shortcomings to this novel as... more>> well, for example the long cuts between each "event", although I find it enjoyable sometimes, it is a minus in my opinion, since it turns boring how he only talks to other characters for quite a number of chapters and that is the buffering time till the next "event", chapters which could really benefit from showing his preparations more, for future fights, making us immerse ourselves on them and since lately he increases his level mostly spontaneously, that to takes the fun out of it.

All in all I enjoy this novel a lot, thanks for bringing it to us. <<less

Sovereign of the Three Realms follows our MC, Jiang Chen, as he progresses through his cultivation with his vast knowledge from his previous life. This sort of gave me the feel of Emperor's Domination's MC in the way that he knows how he should be progressing from stage to stage. SoTR's MC runs into opponents along the way that are more than he can handle which is refreshing as ED's MC seems to trample all those he comes across. I've loved reading this novel from the very beginning even though it can be frustrating at times. I like the MC because he has so much knowledge but it doesn't make him unbeatable, so he has to sometimes ask others for advice/help depending on the circumstances. I've always liked smart MCs because they avoid most of the annoying tropes that other MCs exhibit. These are just my thoughts, thanks for the translation etvo.
