I recently finished this novel after reading it over several months. As with most wuxia stories, it had its highs and lows and occasionally felt a bit repetitive. That said, it held my attention throughout, and I never felt like abandoning it. However, the last ~400 chapters felt notably rushed—not in a completely negative way, but it seemed like there was untapped potential, especially in terms of world-building. It felt as if the author lost interest in fully exploring the story’s world and instead focused primarily on delivering the payoff... more>> set up in the first chapter.

Overall, I would put this in the top 10 of Wuxia novels I've read. It is slightly different from traditional wuxia novels such as those by Er Gen so it is a nice change of pace. Overall I recommend it if you are looking for something to read and are stuck down the wuxia rabbit hole. <<less

I already completed this novel and giving 4 stars only because 1500-2000 chapters were quite good, as well idea.

But all in all this is at max 3 stars, I missed good fighting scenes, compared with other works (some of them were even worse, but had way better fights). I won't extend myself, because there is many reviews that explain a lot of things. The idea was really good, but the last 200-500 chapters felt too rushed.

So it's simple read, if you want to read it, but don't expect too much.

I like some parts of this novel but actually the overall story and plot is him slapping lesser people but he was already rich/powerfull/knowledgable but he just couldnt cultivate. The conclusion is that nothing changes story wise if he was his dad from first life

All I can say is if you can brave through 268 chapters it's pretty decent....

Though you might stumble upon author's BS here and there.... Apparently the author, the editor and the proofreader are probably smoking some good stuff as they impart their genius occasionally in some chapters....

Edit at 858:

Damn! the author sure loves to shove a lot of fillers in the novel....

Ok it's been a while since a read the novel, but I mostly remember. I think yall are tripping tbh. It's not that bad, but the near the ending it hella rushed and stuff. Leveling is fine and it makes sense that he know so much stuff. Man is reincarnated with the knowledge of a son of a heaven lord guy. He was alive for millions of years so of course he is gonna f*cking remember sh*t like😑😑😑😑. Tbh it been a while so a don't remember exact details and... more>> stuff, but I did enjoy the novel. MC is pretty ok and I found the progression of where he is moving pretty well.
Spoiler

I found the progression of where he was at pretty good. He is a noble of this small weak kingdom. Moves to the strongest kingdom and then moves to a sect. Moves to another strong sect and then goes to the strongest city I'm pretty sure. Progression was cleary not that fast, but it was spaced pretty well thought the 2300 chapters. I like how they touched up in stuff that happened early on in the story. He gets that bit*h pregnant and he finds his mom and dad. Like I personally didn't find stuff that bad like the other review say. He is not some op MC that gets strong in the first 100 chapters. No he stays pretty decently normal and then at the end he becomes pretty strong.

I find the novel to be pretty decent and its long too so I do recommend this novel. <<less

Didn't hook me at all.

The man reason is the horrible writing/translation and constant repetition. Yes, really constant, all the time. Any description of cultivation is unbearable, even the fights are so exaggerated it is almost sad. I'll just cite two sentences as examples.

1st an average sentence. You'll find about 20-30 of this quality in most chapters:

... more>> " Xuan Yuan's pupils abruptly contracted as they shot out endless looks of shock and astonishment."

2nd is a lot worse. Those "only" pop up frequently when MC is fighting or cultivating:

"Therefore, all sorts of gazes met in a tit-for-tat struggle, and permeated throughout the scene."

The MC starts of interesting, but the author starts to forget his background very fast. After less then a hundred chapters of constant praise the MC lost anything special. Very average. Additionally, MCs "cheat" is way too strong. He spent millions of years in a library... he just knows everything. He's never impressed or surprised, very boring all in all.

I've read 6 or 7 cultivation novels before so I need at least something. <<less

It's a true-blue Xianxia novel, and as such, if you've read these sorts of novels before, you know exactly what you're getting into when you read it.

Even so, the author spins it very well, and adds a unique flavor to it.

It's like any local delicacy, like Marmite or liver and onions.

If you love it, you love it.

If you hate it, you hate it.

Every arc is a conspiracy a minute.

Spoiler

And each conspiracy encourages a counter-conspiracy from the MC that's far more ridiculous and hilarious than the original conspiracy.

[collapse]

You get a feel for the rhythm of it rather quickly, but it never gets boring, because you never know what our Boi will cook up next until the very end.

Even the endgame story boss dies in the most WTF manner imaginable.

He smokes and spit-roasts his villain-of-the-day enemies like it's Christmas dinner every week, and even his friends fear him, never mind his enemies.

Spoiler

If he wanted to, he could've set up an imperial harem built on the sheer volume of mortal enemies that would have s**ked him off out of fear and admiration if he gave them half the chance.

And a second harem for his teachers, old man friends, and admirers.

And a third harem for all the friendzoned women in his life who would have conquered planets if it earned them his affection.

[collapse]

It's almost 2400 chapters long, and frankly, a part of me would have loved it to hit 2400 proper, if only so I could read a side-story regarding what he and his descendents did after the true ending.

Spoiler

I would've paid good money to read about him starting a family tradition of becoming a celestial emperor, setting up a greater world, and then annexing to the ancestral great world to make an apex solar system, yeah?

[collapse]

Heads-up: The last arc is a post-story epilogue.

You'll understand when you get that far.

Spoiler

You know from chapter 1 that there would be a true final boss. But you'll never guess who it actually is and why until it happens in the last part of the last arc.

That's the sort of story this is. Even when you think you see it coming, it still manages to pull the rug out from under you... Every. Single. Time.

But that's what makes it such a wonderful story.

[collapse]

But yeah, I recommend this one.

It doesn't look like much, but it's more than meets the eye. <<less

I've just finished the first major arc but I've stopped afterwards.

Initially, I had high hopes and was excited due to the MC's reincarnation background - but then, it got a bit disappointing. The MC is mostly passive (based from the first arc) where the antagonizing factor would cause trouble after trouble to the MC's camp but they wouldn't do the same and just passively defend but that's alright, it was still readable and I still had hopes.

But then, for some weird reason, enemy characters have plot armors that's just absurd,... more>> and the fight is just needlessly prolonged. 'Oh, this hollow but supposedly important enemy is about to die, nope, strong enemies appear, MC managed to find a way, surprise, there was a strong enemy again LITERALLY out of nowhere'

Of course that's normal with these types but the way the author builds too much hype just for a disappointing conclusion threw me off, I felt like it would be a pattern/how the author is, and after reading most of the other comments, I guess I was right. <<less

A great story spanning many sleepless nights for me as I just can't seem to put it down.

While I can't say anything about the quality of the actual text, the English translation is of very high quality.

The pace of the story is slow, but it still manages to keep me enthralled. While the main character is way too powerfully, this is a fairly normal stable in fantasy books. I will admit its the first Chinese fantasy novel I've read don't have read much else to compare it with. So who... more>> know if I read another book, would I still rate it as highly? The only think I do know is you always remember your first! :) My only critic is its handling of relationships between lovers, its a little basic but I assume that it because of its intended target audience or maybe just the nature of fantasy books, its not like its handled that maturely in western fantasy either! <<less

Even though the MC (Jiang Chen) has an OP like database of info, it does not get everything super easy as some novels who are related, he does get into a ladder like journey of going to a city, getting friends with some low/mid tier power in decline, make enemies with a rising power that is not righteous, fightes them in some way, saving the faction that helped him of demise, advances and goes to another city to repeat the cycle, some characters are somewhat not developed because the MC... more>> has to move on to new heights. His story is good and well developed, he does not have a harem, but is surrounded by people that look up to him and not everything goes according to his planing which is a good thing considering that he has knowledge beyond everyone. Overall a very good read because he concernes about himself and mankind and does not try to get everything for himself, helping others along the way. <<less

What can I say.. I enjoy the story so far.. I only wish it was completed already, yes the novel is like other xianxia novels, same cliches can be found throughout the story, it's not a bad thing. The harem can be toned down a bit, far too many female characters imo that the author jst doesnt know wht to do with a couple of them.. Wei qi or whatever her name is, one of the two girls in his guards, I felt was utilized poorly n not given enough... more>> time to flesh out her character. The lin older sister has been missing for quite some time now, I'm sure when she turns up next she'll be as powerful as our MC. DanFei there was jst not enough of her to make me care abt her at all, huanger out of all the girls except for goyu to kind of matter. To me I feel like there are lot of interesting side characters tht are more interesting then some of the ones tht keep appearing, one such character is the elder Wan from the walkabout sect.. I feel like he was one interesting character that the author could've focused on instead of DanFei. <<less

I've stumbled upon this novel from my friend and I've read it since then till now and this is my review

  • Good story. At first, I thought it's just gonna be another xianxia story where the MC will stumble into obstacle, learn to conquer obstacle, and repeat. But when I started to read it, it prove to be more than that. It got mystery, battle of wits, and a little romance. Although, the story did get slow sometimes which can prove to be boring to read. Sometimes, one or two chapters just to give some explanation
  • Good Character Development. The MC don't always be natural good guy, he also can be bad guy to the villain so we can see that he is human enough for the story. So, I'm curious to what extend the MC will go through

First of all, SOTR is a great book with many of the qualities I am looking for.

- The MC doesn't mindlessly slaughter nine generations of a person's family because of an offense

- He is able to understand the emotions and thoughts of others

... more>> - Brings up his followers along with him to new heights

- A man who cares about the wellbeing of the world and its individuals rather than only being focused on cultivation/his goals

There are some negatives as well

- He breezes through every obstacle as if it was a piece of paper

- Most of the villains are shallow minded individuals who are never able to put up a challenge or give the MC a setback and he is always able to goad them into a bet where he profits big

- The author uses his previous life's experiences and the mysterious seal inside of him as big crutches to shield him from hardships or danger.

All in all, I really like the book and the translation team is top tier in terms of quality of releases and amount. <<less

Sovereign of the three realms is a good story that tends to have a lot of problems. Don't get me wrong I like it, but the author has some problems with consistency and also moving the story. Overall though those are systemic problems with the web novel genre, so they are not fatal to my enjoyment of the story. I think I would have had better things to say about the story of it were not for a recent arc where the MC seemed to brake character. In my opinion... more>> it was jarring and made the MC lose some integrity. However the story is fun, at times funny and where else do you find an old man harem. If you have the time check out this story about a reincarnator who was beaten to death for farting. <<less

A very enjoyable series overall, but some parts require a bit of work to get through.

Typical story of reincarnation: OP character with some cheat reincarnates and takes over the world.

Lots of Dao of Pills, lots of Martial Daos, etc, but this series has a draw with the characters. Again, slightly typical but the main character is actually only practicing the Martial Dao for the first time in both lives. So he is experiencing that, and his cheat abilities are just memories and the usual Wuxia luck of the Main Character.

There... more>> are several over-arching mysteries at this point that are interesting, with even things abandoned in the plot having a big part later on. The author is pretty good at picking up pieces - with the world changing as the character grows more powerful and starts putting things together. I don't want to specify what those are so people don't start looking for them, but when reading - pay attention to everything.

And one thing - this series does not have the character (at least at this point) become so powerful that he can literally destroy a planet or overthrow the world. He still has to be character, his body refining techniques aren't anywhere near as insane as Talisman Emperor (for instance), and his Pill Dao isn't as insane as I Shall Seal the Heavens. He spends time to earn his accomplishments like: one million years in his past life ONLY doing pills. So the character does always have someone more powerful than him. If you can make it through some of the more draggy bits, it picks up very quickly after each one. This isn't a series were you have 200 chapters of "UGH" for every 100 chapters of "AWESOME!" - This is a series where you have 20-30 chapters of drag and 100 or so of attention getting. <<less

I will just start out by saying that if you want a moderate to fast paced read then this may not be the story for you. If you are willing to invest your time into a slow but well written story, then I advise giving SOTR a chance.

This is not one of those stories where the MC has a harem in the blink of the eye, or at all even. The MC isn't all powerful or overpowered. What the MC has is vast amounts of varied knowledge that he gets... more>> to put to use on himself and those close to him in order to basically go from scrub to genius elite of genius elites.

The journey is very long and drawn out but you are there for every step of the way. Rarely are there any significant time jumps which can and does bog down the story some.

Considering the story is far from over yet, I will say this...I do look forward to the future and seeing an end to this journey. As of chapter 1024, I feel an uptick in the flow and progression of the story so give it a try. That's all I can really say, give it a shot and see if you enjoy the story. <<less

There are many reasons to like this novel. The main character isn't a one track minded individual who has high EQ and IQ. He understands that he alone can not save the world and brings up those around him; knows when to advance and when to retreat. However, the biggest drawback of the story is that nothing has proven to be beyond his scope of abilities. No matter the obstacle he encounters he is able to fall back to his pill dao, martial dao, or miscellaneous information from his previous... more>> life to solve the problem with ease. I understand that he is a man of great fortune and destiny but even they should face setbacks and challenging obstacles. Overall, I like the book and the translation is awesome. <<less

TL;DR - Great novel with great character development, but man.... those tournament sections are booooooring to get through.

I'll start by saying that this is really a pretty great novel.

The author develops the characters at an interesting pace, and doesn't allow the plot to get too stagnant. I find Jiang Chen to be a very engaging MC, and his backstory is VERY slowly (almost painfully slowly) being unraveled, and it is mysterious and intriguing. I think that the story arcs and the characterizations of Jiang Chen's friends and supporters are engaging... more>> enough to make me genuinely care about most of their progressions throughout the story.

The relationship progression seems legitimate, and even though there is a significant harem building up around Jiang Chen, it at least goes into the depth required for it to make some kind of sense. He genuinely cares for all those around him and invests time into helping them grow and prosper/succeed.

The main part of the story that I have a hard time getting through... The thing that really slows me down on my reading, is the author's repeated use of fighting tournaments throughout the work. Over and over again, it describes these fights in detail, but they start sounding repetitive and boring. I tend to stop and wait during tournaments that are being translated. And then I skim through them and just catch buzzwords and big developments, and I feel like I have yet to miss anything worth reading in depth.

That being said, The Veluriyam Pagoda arc after the actual combat section was VERY interesting. <<less

I may be biased as this is one of the first web novels I read when I got introduced to the wuxia/xianxia genre.

In comparison to other similar novels I've read since first getting into the genre, I can say that SOTR walks an interesting boundary in terms of the main character's characterization. Other novels seem to always either make their MC's omnipotent or incredibly dominant in combat or just too lucky to seem reasonable. The MC in this novel, while dabbling a little in each of these regards, does not... more>> push boundaries to the point that I find it to be too unbelievable. I'm pleased that the MC hasn't dove off the cliff into a massive harem thus far, which is something I've seen in a few other works, although things may change in the future.

All in all, the novel, while following the xianxia formula somewhat closely, retains just enough individuality to not become too dry and remains an entertaining read. <<less

The plot itself is quite interesting and so far I like it very much, but there are also many mistakes here and there throughout the novel. The author would sometimes either by accident or carelessness completely forget the cultivation levels of minor characters. The background narration of the MC is also irritating at times i.e always mentioning of course he such a genius hes the son of the celestial emperor, or at times even the MC would think this. Overall even with the inaccuracies and minor plot holes I find... more>> the story pretty enjoyable. <<less
