The strongest point of the story is the emotional weight it manages to pile onto the reader. The beauty and style of the writing pushes the envelop to deliver many nuanced and thought inducing scenes that really sells the majority of climaxes for the various arcs that follow the first one. By far the weakest arc is the first one even though in other works it might be the highlight. It served to establish the MC and briefly cover the setting. The setting is the most mysterious part of the... more>> story as it subverts the generic dungeon clearing setting that many other works follow, slowly revealing the truth of the tower that only gets weirder and weirder.

Another aspect that the author pulled off splendidly is the humor. I didn't expect many of the funniest lines I've ever read to pop up suddenly in this this work. The humor driven by strongly written characters that play off well together.

One final point I have to mention is the romance. It's f*ckin good (like no joke, god tier). No harem. One of the best romance I've read in a light novel. Brace yourselves. <<less

I'm not sure why the negative reviews are focusing on the MC mentality and character that's vastly different. Also the world building is being questioned which I'm sure that part is debatable since I also have not finished this book to completion.

But let me share my thoughts regarding this novel.

MC why a lot of people questioned that the action he took just for one person is insane but for me it just seems very reasonable.

Spoiler

Yes he committed a mu*der agaisnt a regressor who can fixed anything when they die. So it is pointless to kill him right there in that timeline. Also in the first place if that character lives then the MC is the one who not only make enemies with but also it is unnecessary trouble. At that point would the author want drama in their stories with an enemy that is immortal? No. It requires careful storywriting and that is not what the author going for.

[collapse]

I actually like the MC. He is a selfish guy who easily likes leading figures of the tower atk. He wanted that for himself which is not wrong. This is one of the factors that made it an unhealthy behavior at the beginning chapters. But at the same time it is positive things for him because he have massive respect towards these people.

MC skill is op but why should that be surprising? When you read the tittle you know it be about an op MC. But this skill does have a limitation other wise it be too op. What I like though is that MC does not ab*se it too much. He has the right to use it when fighting bosses and the temptation to die from those bosses are very real. He could just blaze through the tower with the most op skills and not caring for npc at all.

Now what I like the most is that it is super fun reading this novel. The story is refreshing for me. Some may be not but it is for me. The arcs is just exciting. We also have something like a world-hopping genre where MC is learning the circumstances on certain floors. Currently where I'm at, the story takes a rather different turn but I still like it because it still fun to read. Never have I been bored and I am engage reading from start to finish. <<less

What starts as a familiar and generic premise evolves so rapidly and burst into nothing short of an epic. The writers skill only seem to grow as he weaves tales of tragedy and heroism. While the static background cast is nothing special it's the one off characters that really steal the show.

Until now, every arc has been better than the last. Every speech filled with more emotion and character. You'll miss out if you disregard it for the premise.

Dayum, this is freaking cool although it gives the vibes of ORV the storyline is good. The MC was like a son of KDJ and YJK haha (≧▽≦) it was kinda mixed both comedy (lil' bit) and tradegy dang, I dont know how many times I cried to their trauma's (≧Д≦)

I could say that this is enjoyable to read especially when the secrets inside the tower were revealed let's add swordman (≧▽≦)

As peelpeyl said, did u even read the novel Nihiklzz or whatever your name is.

You say - And he goes back in time by killing himself 4000 times to kill the man again from which he gets the resurrection skill just because the PITIFUL role model of his was defending and protecting himself and he calls him a psychopath.

And claim that killing the innocent witness was just 'protecting himself'

The saintess was guilty of trying to kill the Flame Emperor for sure, and defo for the right reasons, but the Flame emperor had the right to defend himself and kill her.

This also means our MC has the right to kill the Flame Emperor in revenge also, even if he did so in a convoluted time loop.

And your reasons on that the emperor cannot give the MC the ability if he dies in the past may or may not be right, after all I'm pretty sure we only have theoretical knowledge of what would occur in a time loop paradox situation, so it may or may not be as you said.

However as the author has went one way, I believe that his original ability is able to bypass this time loop paradox due to magic shenanigans, so the arguement itself is pointless as the author designed this fantasy world and what he says goes.

Mostly excellent, except for one thing.

Spoiler

The romance part sucks and the MC's personality has completely lost its consistency. MC insisted on saving the lives of NPCs before, why is the prince asked to execute three innocent people here? Did I miss something?

Even if this is a misunderstanding, his favorable impression of FL is also weird.

There are obviously two female characters who get along with MC in a more natural way. I don't know why MC didn't choose one of them.

This novel is just pure bullshit. Well it was released in 2018 when this stuff was new so its understandable why it has such hype. But its now just unbearable.

MC gets an op ability like time reversal just because he is jealous. Yes you heard it right this f*cker is jealous that's why the system gives him SSS class abilities. F*ck even fantasies don't go this far. Again when he kills something he can copy one of their skills or something like that bs. So obviously this bastard gets killed... more>> by the OP old swordsman and gets his ability. And guess what it was a high rankers soul from another world. Yes, you read it right. Now the MC has cheat like system helping him + OP knowledgeable high ranker. Even then he can't solve shits by himself so every time something goes wrong the f*cker kills himself. And as if that's not even enough, he kills himself in a way that he feels pain because he has to remember his EvErY dEaTH type bs, which obviously he doesn't even care about. Then comes his love interest whom he saves by killing himself again and again and that's also at the mercy of the administrators. At this point I am just done with this bs. <<less

I needed something to read & the description sounded cool. But I dropped it. The writing did not work for me. My experience was like this:

  1. Main-Character is insane (pathetic & hard to care about). He even kills himself repeatedly (for his skill). Suddenly he's a normal bland hero? Personality swap?
  2. Other characters are mu*derous weirdos, the story didn't care about them & neither could i. [Minor SPOILER] There's an annoying ghost who constantly follows MC.
  3. [minor SPOILER] MC's ability works due to time-travel, which sucks the fun out of every story. No suspense, no investment, just shitty plot-holes.
  4. The story follows the MC closely at the start. I lost interest ch30 as it time-skips and glosses over everything, to rush a generic tower plotline. It's just unsatisfying.

I only wrote this review because the review by god slayer was so bafflingly incorrect that I felt like I had no choice.

A lot of people reading this novel attribute what are supposed to be interpreted as unresolved mysteries as plotholes, for example the way the main character receives his powers.

Spoiler

He is granted the ability "I want to be like you" borne out of his envy to the tower, a power that allows him to copy a single skill after he dies. He is then killed by the one person who has a regression power. This sounds like a plothole (or at least an astronomically unlikely plot contrivance), but it's not. It's a setup. Unfortunately, it seems like the author put too much stake into the intelligence of the average webnovel reader and assumed they would pick up on that. However, and I'm not going to actually spoil the mystery, if you want to know, please read the novel!

[collapse]

Furthermore, there's an accusation of the main character being some kind of Gary Stu, which is absolutely unreasonable. It completely ignores the themes of like, the entire book. Also, back to God Slayer, he said the author "unintentionally made the protagonist a psychopath". This is patently false, since
Spoiler

it was clearly on purpose. The Sword Emperor, the only person besides the audience who experiences what Kim Gongja does, constantly calls him a crazy bastard, and his character has multiple foils such as the tower master and the constellation killer who show what kind of person Kim Gongja might have become if he hadn't met other people who improved his crazy mindset. Even the hypocrisy of Kim Gongja killing the Flame Emperor, even though it actually was written to be very reasonable to most readers, came back as a serious plot point.

[collapse]

Now, aside from addressing negative criticisms, there is loads of praise to sing about the novel.

The Characters- Absolutely the strongest thing about this novel. Every single one of the major side characters could carry their own story as an exceptionally written protagonist or antagonist. The emotional arcs of even the side characters have more depth than those of the protagonists of 90% of web novels.

The Plot- The writing is tight, the problems and their solutions are very cleverly written, and it really sells Kim Gongja's status as an intelligent, out of the box thinker. Also some of the best exploitation of regression powers I've ever seen

The World- This novel takes its time, expanding the world little by little, but to anyone paying attention it's very clear that there's a very fleshed out world beneath the surface of what we can see, and we get to explore it more and more as the story opens up

The Action- The fights are engaging, emotionally rich, and cleverly written. Powers are used in creative ways. Also, the writer fully utilizes the premise of a "Tower", showing all kinds of genres and locations and writing them with great skill and awareness.

Overall, this is probably one of if not the best web novels I've ever read, and it's definitely my favorite. On the same level as ORV, which was my favorite before I read this. It only gets better and better as it goes on. Please read this novel <<less

Even though I didn't like MC who always thinks and acts to save others needlessly, but still I kept on reading the story because I didn't find any other good novels out there and it got somewhat better. But this chapters 72-73 made me drop the novel.

Cuz the MC is left to die by the heavenly Demon. And still the MC thinks about gaining her recognition. Come on what the fck kinda mentality is this when she just let him die without saving and when she doesn't know about his... more>> powers??

This is just too much. Someone left u to die and the first thought u get is about how to complete a pointless quest given by ur killer?

Even if u say that dying is like drinking water for MC and his mindset is different, I can't continue reading this bs. <<less

It offers a much deeper look into the MC's mentality and methods, as well as re-examine some details that are previously glossed over. The title of this novel should've been SSS-class lucky bastard. Why?

Spoiler

His S class skill is actually useless since he'll have to die to copy a skill from his killer. The lucky bastard however was able to copy a skill that resets to past 24 hrs whenever he dies

[collapse]

So a few chapters in and he's completely broken already like other generic garbage korean novels. That's what I thought however

Spoiler

The MC has multiple limiters. He can't infinitely get skills because there are limit in skills. It's like in the pokemon games where you need to forget a skill to learn a new one. There's also a penalty in death. It is non exist when he was still f rank but as his rank increases, the penalty also increases. OP skills doesn't mean you're OP. There are characters like sword saint who are OP with inferior skills. Their main weapon in combat is Aura and the MC sucks in that.

[collapse]

The novel has a similar concept with tower of god and SLR with the climbing the tower thingy. This novel however is unique in a way that it deviates from your regular novels where there's just mindless slaughter. The MC clears the boss battles in creative ways. The characters' personalities are decent. There's still no dumbass villains to underestimate the MC only to be curbstomped later on. Solid 5/5 atm <<less

It's a regression story but with a unique twist since it was he himself had made the effort to return to the past in order to eliminate a certain threat to his life and then, the story starts there. as slope going almost perpendicular to ground. I think author got a bit lost or confused somewhere a long way, I don't think it good but neither its some tr*sh in forms of randomly connected words.

Another novel where author decided, after around 50~100 chapters, to be a teacher and preach about morality, emotions and other idealistic bullsh*t that even 5th grader wouldn't believe in. Author got so immersed in their delusions that didn't notice that plotholes were starting pile up, I can give small benefit of doubt and assume some of them might be mistranslation but others were to direct to ignore.

Then there is romance, that's bland, forced and chains/neuters MC. I would prefer 100x just regular braindead harem MC with 0 dimension collectibles in form of a human female than this. It serves no other purpose than to restrict MC's main ability, I think that good romance should make MC and their partner stronger, also expose a bit of vulnerability here and there. Of course also needs to introduce some conflict but here she seems to have some depth, individuality but its not used anywhere, expect to hit us "i have wife that told me to don't do this or that". No conflict, no purpose just "true romance" and author starts that romance with mocking similar behavior just to do exactly same.

I felt that more and more chapters were fillers or sermons and characters started to make less and less sense and at one moment I started more or less skimming through book, I would say breaking point was after

SSS-Class su*cide Hunter was an interesting novel. I picked it up again after dropping it the first time due to my confusion. Many parts of it are amazing and conducive to a great read, but just as many limit it from achieving its true greatness.

First of all, the author and the translation team did an amazing job with the writing. Separate from the context of the novel, the world choice and syntax of the novel are immaculate, especially for its genre. The author's wordplay is ingenious, and through the masterful... more>> efforts of the translation team, allow us english readers to visualize the various scenes in the novel to their full grandeur. At one point, this was what drove me to read when the plot mostly went to sh**. This consistency of excellence is maintained throughout the novel, almost as if one of the primary goals of the author was to keep a somewhat high level of diction. However, this also sort of bites the book in the a**.

The author's word choice often leads to many moments in the novel seeming deep and meaningful when they are simply nonsensical or there just for filler. Though this doesn't happen often, some moments when it's clear are extremely off putting.

Spoiler

The Tower Master's arc is arguably one of the most confusing and intentionally difficult reads of the novel, partly due to how the author chose to introduce Ja Soo-jung's backstory. The author literally wrote the scenes like a puzzle - the reader was left in literal confusion as to what was happening. New concepts, characters, and places were introduced left and right, compounded by the fact that every single character spoke in metaphors and hinted at a "deeper meaning" behind their uselessly complex words. In reality, most of the arc was useless fluff. The Tower Master's philosophy inherently made no sense - she aimed to experience all suffering as a means to end all suffering - the suffering she "caused" during her experiences would lead her to be the sole reason suffering occurred. Boom, issue solved - at least, if the issue was even a valid one. While I understand the Tower Master is a foil for Gong-Ja, who aims to stop all suffering through intervention rather than observation, her methodology just makes no sense. First of all, it requires severe mental gymnastics in order to even comprehend her viewpoint, but furthermore, it's never really delved into as to why she chose not to intervene besides a few confusing remarks in passing. In fact, she even claims that Gong-Ja resembles here "in the past" - if so, why has such an all powerful being not taken any action to end the suffering she oh-so-despises? Behind the layers of meaningless words hinting at a meaning that isn't there, a few glaring plot holes emerge in many of the arcs.

[collapse]

This clear divide in the quality of opinion is somewhat compounded by the author's attempts to imbue the novel with philosophical discussion. Admittedly, some of this discussion is masterfully done, and I genuinely enjoyed understanding these perspectives and experiencing them fully through the author's writing.

Spoiler

The 20th floor's boss stage, Estelle, brought up the question of the extent of forgiveness. If Gong-Ja decides to forgive the Demon King of Fall Rain, the killer of thousands and the ruiner of many more, why shouldn't he forgive the Flame Emperor, who's only real crime was orders of magnitude less than Estelle? This discussion gains even more value as Gong-Ja applies this logic to the other terrors he encounters in the tower, turning this question into his literal moral philosophy - repentance through forgiveness. In the Murim arc, a short delve into the nature of "Demonic" and "Righteous" is shortly explored. Unlike many martial novels, su*cide Hunter points out the two are inherently connected as "brothers", the only difference being their views on the world - whether to make their mark on it or to treat it as it is and nothing more. Both suffer consequences when taken to extremes, but similarly, neither are inherently "evil" either. Such moral ambiguity makes the finale of the Murim arc even more meaningful, both emotionally and philosophically. In the Goblin arc, the idea of viewing divinity as a guide rather than a ruler is brought up, and both sides of the coin are explored throughout the arc (s), which was really enjoyable (and funny) to read.

[collapse]

However, some of the author's more "important" points are undermined by the author either literally forgetting they exist or not delving into them enough.

Spoiler

Once again, the Tower Master's arc takes the spotlight. The debate between action and inaction is proposed through the "duel" between the Tower Master and Gong-Ja regarding who can make souls who have lost their way and are struggling more satisfied. However, after the chapter the duel was declared in, it is hardly brought up again, EVEN AFTER Gong-Ja conquers the 100th floor and literally becomes a pillar (for some reason). Furthermore, the nature of the Tower as two cycles of assessing growth, both as a group of people (0-49th) and as a person (50-99th), was a very interesting idea to explore, had the author not forgotten after a chapter or two. Some of the moments I thought would've been really cool if explored further were just cut short, which I found a little disappointing.

[collapse]

This nature of "forgetting" crucial aspects of the novel also applies to the characters, which are the bread and butter of the novel and what kept me coming back. Almost every character, from Gong-ja to everyone he has had even a minute impact on, are complex characters with their own motivations and arcs throughout the story. It helps alleviate the feeling that the world moves to accommodate Gong-ja's story, and instead, he exists in the world just as the others do. At least, this feeling applies for the first half of the novel.

Spoiler

For example, the guild masters are a great example of the depth the author expects of his characters. Anastasia, or the Black Dragon Guild Master, appears at first as a cold and ruthless leader who sacrifice anything for the betterment of the tower. However, it is slowly revealed throughout her various interactions with Gong-Ja that she is just a lost girl looking for stability - a pillar she can lean on. After going so long without anyone she could trust, her vulnerability has led her to simply abandon all human relation - not trusting anymore brings less baggage. With Gong-Ja being her first true "friend" in a while, she forces him to sign a literal contract in order to be her "friend", further exposing her untrusting, yet hopeful personality. Further showing the author's clear mastery at developing good characters is the Crusader, someone who appears inherently righteous at first but is slowly revealed to be just almost to a fanatical degree. Never letting go of grudges against those she deems unjust, no matter who they meant to her. In fact, she was committed to mu*dering all of her comrades in return for their initial massacre committed at the beginning of the tower. Gong-Ja himself is a very compelling main character as well, especially at the start of the story. He is a hunter that has nothing going for him except his immense willpower and a greedy desire to achieve his own, special ending, no matter the cost. Whether it be committing su*cide over 4, 000 times or literally sentencing himself to the harshest of solitudes in order to prove a point, he will do it all to achieve his perfect ending. This willpower-driven main character who wasn't excessively overpowered and was forced to work towards his victories was extremely fun to read about.

[collapse]

However, this masterful writing takes a turn for the worse in the second half of the novel, partly due to the issues mentioned above.]

Spoiler

The first glaring issue is Gong-ja himself. It feels as if he literally regresses into a shallower character. While at first he performed all these actions out of pure selfishness, he began doing it under the name of "righteousness" and the "power of friendship" down the line. Admittedly, this can be attributed to his growth through meeting his wife and becoming close with the guild masters, and by extension, his world, but the way it's pulled off is disconcerting. It is almost as if the author is desperate to a fault to prove that Gong-ja is a good person. However, this isn't the main issue. Gong-ja suddenly becomes extremely experienced with aura and significantly more intelligent seemingly out of nowhere. Plots that he would've fallen into at the current pace of his character growth are seemingly easily seen through by him. Issues that would've taken multiple regressions and some enlightenment to solve are solved in a single one, even worse, through this aforementioned "power of friendship". It's literally all a breeze for him - the regression skill removed all tension from the novel, partly due to its frequent use in the latter part of the novel. Though this was bound to happen due to just how broken this combination of skills is, it really affected the quality of the novel in the second half, not invoking nearly as much compassion and connection to Gong-ja as the first half of the novel. Furthermore, the rest of the cast that was so thoroughly developed in the first half are literally abandoned in the second, due to the nature of the "qualifications". While this can be interpreted as an attempt to shift the focus to Gong-ja to spotlight his supposed "growth", it has almost the opposite effect. I ended up missing the others quite a bit, and it annoyed me how the stage was cut off from anyone who wasn't a god. It made Gong-ja seem haughty and arrogant, especially the way he acted in the later levels. Unlike the somewhat grounded nature of the story previously (where the power scaling was somewhat bearable), Gong-ja's inhumane and unexplained growth really broke the immersion for the second half. Even worse, the main gimmick of his character, namely the trauma recreation, seems to get easier instead of harder the higher level he gets. Trauma which nearly took his life previously was supposed to be multiplied by orders of magnitude, but he literally offscreens it in the later chapters. Intentional or not, Gong-ja turns more into the power fantasy insert I expected when I first started the novel.

[collapse]

Unlike many people, I didn't have a massive issue with the initial romance, as I interpreted it as a discussion into if "love at first sight exists, and if so, how drastic can it be". It's effects in later chapters, however, tended to be more of a fan service than an actual plot device.

Spoiler

I'm looking at you, useless Raviel assassination arc

[collapse]

Overall, the main issue lies with the gap in quality between the various arcs in the novel. Every 10 floors or so is essentially its own story, with its own genre and message that it's trying to discuss. The ones that really hit are in the first half of the novel.
Spoiler

Up to when his tower reaches the 50th floor.

[collapse]
After that point, the novel gradually loses its luster, all the way up to a pretty unsatisfying ending and a feeling of almost being freed of a burden instead of the afterglow of a good story. The first part set the bar so high that the second part couldn't satisfy it.

In conclusion, the novel is definitely worth a read, if not for the entire plot (which is better than the way I depicted it here), then for the stories the author masterfully tells in the first half. <<less

The author doesn't know what to make out of his MC in the first 40 chapters. At first, MC seems to be leveling to learn skills to becomes stronger, meaning normal growth in strength. But suddently, MC uses his regression skill to become a white knight intending a perfect run so nobody will die, NPC included. And this without the emotionnal growth you expect to see happening between the MC and the other characters he wants to save.

It feels a bit like a betrayal, this is not a novel about... more>> a MC learning how to become stronger, no, it's a novel centered on the fake complexity of the emotionnal state of the MC and the author trying to justify his choices by making a mess out of the plot. Somehow the secondary characters seem to have to rely on the MC to clear levels, when originaly the Flamme Emperor seems to have clear up to the 40ish floor easily while keeping most to the secondary characters alive, and he was supposed to be evil. It does not make sense. <<less
