4 stars out of 5

I won't give you in depth analysis of the story as I can't read moonrunes and as of writing there are only 5 chapters out.

I went in expecting nothing, maybe carbon copy of every single KR story ever where the MC is masochistic money obsessed scrooge.

What I found out instead was a broken MC, someone really mad. The first 5 chapters are too short to see whether this will also fall into the same KR copypaste category, but my first impression was: damn that's clever, I... more>> have questions and there is potential here. <<less

First things first, this is a MUST read novel.

I had been following the translation of SSS Class Hunter for years and I remember vividly being struck with anticipation for each chapter release. While the first 50 or so chapters can be considered a bit more of a slow start, the way in which the author manages to weave all of the concepts and arcs later in the novel is so organic and refreshing. Especially the last 60 chapters, SSS Class Hunter becomes so breathtaking. Every piece of dialogue feels like... more>> a quote from a great historical figure and every chapter feels like ORV in how its being woven to become an epic of the main character.

While I do see the see the criticism of the main character having regression makes it seem like there's no real threat to the story, this novel, as stated in several other reviews, is at its core a story about human emotions. This is the highlight of the novel, characters seem to dance around the pages and breathe through the lines. I have never read such well fleshed out characters and such a natural story progression surrounding the characters with the goal of climbing the tower being the backdrop. Kim Gongja and the person he develops into chapter by chapter is someone you just can't help but root for and become enveloped in his dreams and goals.

If you are just listlessly scrolling and trying to find something new to read, I cannot recommend this novel enough if you enjoy amazing writing and good translation to back it up with a gorgeous cast of characters to draw you into this world. <<less

to start off, not saying the other novels I mentioned is bad (i am in fact a big fan of rotmhs and lotm), and im sorry if my review just sounds like im comparing these three peak fiction, but I cant really write how to express my feeling if not like this.

firstly, I can understand gong-ja's value a bit more compared to cm's from rotmhs value and klein's from lotm value, its probably because I can relate to gong-ja even tho just a little bit while I cant relate at... more>> all to cm and klein.

secondly, ssschs ending is really satisfying because I finally got to read the ending of the the-shouldering-the-world's-burden-MCs where they can finally enjoy their own hardwork, rotmhs and lotm aint fully completed yet so this is my first time reading the ending with this MC trope. <<less

Absolutely beautiful. The writing style is poetic and so beautifully meaningful that it’s mesmerizing. The plot gets better with each arc and everything ties up so well. From the beginning to the end nothing is left out. Definitely top tier novel. All the characters are fleshed out, no cookie cutter characters with zero personality. It doesn't feel like reading a fantasy novel, it’s so much more with all the different characters, relationships and incidents.

10, 000 / 10

Definitely recommended

Definitely gonna reread

Dropped at chapter 282.

Early on, the story is better than expected considering the title and summary.

I lost interest because the MC became righteous midway through, trying to keep everyone alive - going as far as keeping alive a character that's clearly mentally unstable and hostile towards the MC.

The writing (or translation?) is top-notch, but the story is tr*sh.

I really enjoyed around the first 200 chapters of the novel, but then it started to fall off for me.

The romance chapters were written really well, but the romance itself is questionable. It seems more like an unhealthy obsession with one another and a love formed through trauma sharing ... more>>
Spoiler

Both being regressors, and sharing the same timeline.

[collapse]
Later on it seems like the sole reason for the romance is to keep MC mentally grounded, or like others have said, fan service.

I dropped this novel in the early 200's around the tower master trauma arc. It just started to feel too contrived/paradoxical/hypocritical. Here are the reasons why I dropped it at this point in the story:

Spoiler

MC gets upset that Tower Master didn't punish those in her faction for their crimes, but yet he himself said he wouldn't be able to kill them (these people are mass mu*derers and cannibals). MC challenges the God that he could do a better job than her, somehow forgetting the fact that his entire life is due to her building the tower for victims of society - he literally wouldn't exist without her. He somehow obtains a godly legendary skill card from her, 'her' existence literally being a fragment of a memory. Yet he still obtains the power of resurrection, now not only can he not die, neither will his followers. It just seemed like a convoluted scenario to give an OP MC even more power to further emphasize that there will be zero consequences for his future actions.

[collapse]

I don't mind the tower master herself.

Spoiler

Unlike other's have mentioned, I can somewhat understand the Tower Master's Logic. She has essentially been regressing for eternity, and although she can intervene in someone's life to make it better, she can't make everyone happy so she chose a method of non intervention telling herself that she will repent for the world's flaws herself (i.e. Jesus sacrificing himself for the sins of others'). Whereas MC only has the scope of the tower, she has the scope of thousands of worlds.

[collapse]

The Race War Arc is a good, but sadly gets ruined later on.

Spoiler

The Goblin warrior that he calls his son becomes a constellation, a literal transcendental being, that has lived for centuries and one of the greatest warriors in the history of the goblin race. Yet the immaturity and childlike behavior of this character is like that of a 5 year old child. This guy has literally seen through the laws of the world, but his character's personality gets assassinated due to the author's need for comedic relief.

[collapse]

tl/dr It starts off good, but falls off midway like most novels. I'm assuming most of the 5 star ratings are due to the manga/manhwa. <<less

It's a good novel.

You will be tense, but not infuriated by plot twists, and while I realize that everything going according to MCs will, or at least him being able to accept the given outcome is essentially a flaw in storytelling medium, I enjoyed it a lot.

The style of writing is very conductive to immersion, with author alongside translators doing their utmost to make us indulge in the story as deeply and effortlessly as possible.

And since it seems obligatory to comment on romance in reviewing this work: it is a... more>> fact that romance was fast-paced, basically skipping over and jumping between strangers, potential enemies, infatuation, co-habitation and marriage in a span of chapter each, if not shorter. Arguments can be made about circumstances affecting the two, ultimately unique to them two, bringing them together (think a man living among aliens, meeting another, beautiful, and vivid human for the first time. Not dramatic? Not romantic? Well, yes, so what). But it's undoubtedly a flaw on a site where yaoi/ BL dominates as a genre in rankings. It might contain a romance genre, but it's absolutely not the main or maybe even secondary focus of the overall story, which is probably the reason for the outcry. <<less

*I red the manwha before reading the novel

When I first started reading, I did not have a good opinion of this novel. I thought that the MC was tr*sh, believing that he deserve so much better and hating the world for everything when he is responsible, the type of person that got a victim complex... It was really bad, even hating the tower for giving such a tr*sh skill (I mean, if he didn't have the regress ability then yeah it's tr*sh so I can understand him) and his obsession... more>> with the flame emperor was disgusting. All he could do is envy the flame emperor, and hating the world for not giving him the same life or something.

But it got better, after he regressed to the past (I was very delighted with the amount of su*cides he has to do and the emotional part of overcoming one's fear of death) and the rest is history. It is a bit strange however how someone can change so much, from a selfish b*stard to a kind, savior complex guy who wants to understand the world and help everyone or some sh*t. Could a person change that much? I doubt it. Maybe some details were missing in the manhwa, but I find it weird how fast he switched.

The author's writing is beautiful, full of emotions and is really showing, immersing the reader in the story and really being able to make us feel. Even in the manhwa the few texts made me cry, so imagine the novel... The writing is not harsh, not cold, and does not make me feel uncomfortable at all. Some tragedy novels I red are written very coldly, and makes me feel as if the world has no hope but this author's writing was warm, in a sense, and kinda ressemble a mother's embrace (full of warmth but emotion at the same time).

The romance part seems to be really rushed. I don't understand why he asked to learn about love or some b*llsh*t and then, poof, he smooth talked the FL and they fell in love. Maybe I'm prejudiced, believing that a male protagonist could never have a good romance (I mean... It's normally a harem with a MC that doesn't deserve it at all) but it is well written after the fast start.

BUT, the author seems to have a knack for writing confusing stuff, which appears 'deep' but when you think about it it's just b*llshit. Like the backstory of the tower master, I understood nothing about what's going on and how she became what she is. Maybe because the arc isn't fully translated yet, but until now (chapter 227) the reason for why the tower master
Spoiler

sacrifuce herself is because she self blame herself for not changing bad events happening??? Like, why doesn't she change it then??? Why does she wants to take the blame and suffer??? Is it because she's a god or smth so she wants to be all benevolent and kind and sh*t so she wants to take responsibility???

[collapse]

Anyway, the reason why it's 5* is because of the writing style mostly. The plot was ok, deep but also wannabe deep and the characters have distinctive traits that doesn't confuse me on who's who. <<less

This novel is goated, the way the writing was done by the author is extremely beautiful, the emotions being portrayed in every character, every tragedy and laughter that happens in a event, every scenery and location that they go through on each floor, they are all depicted with beauty.

Character development is also great, not only the main character got it, but every side character in novel got them. Unlike what others said about the romance, it's actually not bad, yes it came out pretty unexpectedly but Raviel did helps a... more>> lot in making the MC get his character development.

Spoiler

Tower master arc suck, it will make your head spin so make sure to turn your brain off for that arc since even the translator have a hard time understanding what is happening.

Overall it's a pretty great read, would recommend. 10/10 <<less

I'm normally, a pretty logic-driven, realistic kind of person.

But I got totally swooned over the romance arc as it truly opens my eye. The romance arc completely caught me off guard.

Honestly I just want to continue reading right now so I'll just end the review here. I totally agree with endspell's review though.

About the romance;

Spoiler

To be fair, I don't find it wrong for the MC to be obsessed in love. Everyone has different definitions on love, and if you think yours is the best, you might have never understood your own partner, or you might have never dated before.

But men might feel insulted, thinking he turned into a woman's pet or something.

Honestly, Gongja falling in love doesn't make him weaker does it? What's the issue even? It's just some readers projecting their ego on Gongja

Absolutely agree with Shimatta's review. Many of my point is the same with Shimatta

First, there are many minor mistake and loophole even before that arc but it's bearable. And then everything change in romance arc. It's garbage. Drop the novel because of it. Their love is too forced.

Spoiler

Why the heck MC fall in love with Raviel??? It come out of nowhere. AND THEN HE AND SHE IS CHEATING. I hate that. If Raviel is single and even the MC is force himself to love her, it's okay. But Raviel is fiancée of crown prince!

Let's says it's okay to cheating but then the story (in the incomplete book library) will be like :

.... Ravelia that gave all of her heart to crown prince suddenly fell in love with the butler. The butler too. They announced their marriage in 10 days....

What the hell? There is no romance story like that. They are not childhood friend, no hardship together, never talk to each other, barely recognize each other, they have no connection whatsoever! But they suddenly love each other?????? Garbage. And hell, it became that the villainess (Ravelia) is the one who the first to cheating, not the crown prince, because crown prince has not yet met the heroine.

[collapse]

Second, in this novel there is just main character. The side character is just a decoration to make MC shining more.

There is many more, but you can read Shimatta's review. It conveys my feeling to this novel completely.

Anyway, this novel is mediocre. It's not bad (except romance arc), but it's not that good either. <<less

Absolutely love this series. A lot of WN are pretty flat in terms of character depth and development, I’m sure we’ve all read our fare share and don’t expect much and they’re still awesome series even if they’re missing a little bit of soul.

However this series truly is well written in every sense of the words. It’s made me cry and laugh and re-read it many times, as I’m writing this I’m getting ready to re-read it again. The different genres it covers and the development of the main and... more>> side characters in this strange new world they have to live in is really wonderful to read and so different from the usual. The sadness of existence and the joy of love and the consequences of power, all covered and wonderfully described while still fulfilling that OP MC craving and cute romance. Everyone has different tastes and you really can’t judge how much you like something based on reviews so please don’t put too much weight on them as you read mine and others. But no one can deny that this will really make you feel things.

Very poetic series, absolutely love it.

however probably don’t read it after a certain point. You will know it when you get to it. I think the author went crazy or something, whole thing spirals into a mess and it takes a long time to even make sense of what is happening. But all the cool and important plot points have happened by then so really just stop reading when you get to that point you aren’t missing much.

still five stars though, if that doesn’t makes sense to you then read it and it will. <<less

You enter expecting a cliché leveling up novel, and leave with a rough but emotional story. SSS class isn't the best story, nor does it have a very good plot. But it makes up for it in its characters, so much in its characters and their interactions. The story has a unique concept on the typical modern dungeon troupe. And I absolutely love how it was executed. The author knows how to write pain, anguish, hunger, happiness, loss. And it's so beautiful to read. So even if there are many... more>> plot holes, and some characters that don't make sense. The story is so good at the one thing it does great, that I can forget about everything. <<less

I got with low expectations for this novel and was pleasant surprise to be above average on the genre.

However it still a busted super OP skills with dubious drawbacks as they seen to not really impact much if not to chance to gain more info by the MC.

The start is not very good, and I thought in dropping it. Specially as the MC personality was so bad that I thanked god it did a 180 in a few chapters going from tr*sh to be able to play with the guild... more>> leaders.

It also suffer from things always going his ways in strange places not all related to his time powers but straight up making the tower change the rules of 10 floors. Or the fact that the 5 guild leaders or anyone else give much trouble to the MC.

Another problem is the terrible worldbuilding, I don't even know why the author use "the tower" as a setting if he going to skip most details and multiple layers. That to not talk about weird the ranking system work as it seen complete arbitary and even the benefits seen to be dubious. And then adding the idea of Aura, that also is not explored.

This story is all about a few arcs where a handful of floors are really important, and the exploration of some of the problem that floor present, but because the many time skips we often only have overall view of his progression.

The interactions with character is pretty interesting if still somewhat swallow as people seen to really go along with what he is saying and they have minimal conflict with each other beside some banter and exposition. As I said before is above average whe compared to others novels both CN, JP and KR.

The story really shine (for me) is on the Murim arc, that the author decide to focus more on the worldbuilding and few characters rather than big vague goals. The author view of Good and Evil sects (staple trope of the genre) was interesting.

Lastly the romance, it was really abrupt and I must confess that is not the type I enjoy reading about as some aspects of it didn't seat well with me. And seen to change the character personality and goals so much and in such difficult way (involve alot su*cides). However, I found it charming in their own way and if the author had spent more time buildig it up it would been better. But is not my cup of tea specially when I saw what was the conclusion.

I guess one problem is the co stant break of 4th wall, as the MC almost seen to know he is on a novel, specially with the library arc on the nose mention. <<less

I'm finally dropping the novel after completing the third arc. I enjoyed the novel thoroughly but continuing after this would only be forcing myself to read. To give you a brief overview of the novel, it begins with the MC. He starts off as a jealous dude who forces himself to regress back to 11 years in the past because of some circumstances.

The allies were fleshed out. Although you would get turned off by the sudden introduction of the allies, the writing doesn't force you to remember their names... more>> and quirks. Rather, it helps you get used to it.

But the novel had glaring problems, at least for me.

Spoiler

The first arc, AKA, the Demon King Arc was where the story was at its peak. It showcased MC's growth as a person and his qualities. It showed his justice and we also get to see a hint of cunningness. The backstories of each and every character were meaningful and actually emotional.

The Heavenly Demon arc was probably an arc you cannot dislike. It's gloomy, sad, and beautiful. There was a problem though. It tries to give a flurry of different kinds of emotions and expects you to sympathize with them. If you are a normal reader, you probably wouldn't have experienced something terribly harsh (like real terrible beyond what normal people experience). Even so, you could make it out how it feels to experience something harsh. That's being empathetic. The story tries to go beyond that.

And trying too hard only has the opposite effect. When I was reading the parts, it did not feel like - 'ah, that's rough' but rather - 'ah, it could be possible'. Still, it had some fine moments like the death of Heavenly Demon and the final verbal fight. Of course, the relationship between MC and his master is also to be mentioned. They were great.

Now, I'll address the elephant in the room. The third arc. It's terrible. Not just the romance, everything else was equally terrible. Until this point, we had actually great characters but aside from MC's lover, other characters were just not up to the mark. I liked her and MC but the way romance was dropped was something very few liked. From what I could tell, the author probably wanted the arc to just be the romance arc and that ruined it.

I would probably be the last person to call out unrealistic romance but as much as I liked their interactions, I have to admit that the author tried too hard. Everything about the arc has to be about romance. MC's character turned inconsistent. This ruined a good story, (again) at least for me. Even the final fight was lacking in substance (unlike MC vs DemonKing and SwordEmperor vs Heavenly Demon).

[collapse]

I went in thinking the story would be action-packed but I wasn't disappointed with how it turned out to be. I acknowledge that the novel is a good novel and perhaps, it gets better after the third arc. Recommended if you want to get a taste of a slightly different novel of the regressor genre. <<less

I swear this is good shit. You know how many stories start off strong and gradually decline?

Yeah, nah, yeah, this isn't the case with this novel. The start is actually only so-so but damn, it gets so freaking good as story progresses. The arc about his master and the demonic path is probably one of the best arcs I've ever written in any novel. Ever.

This novel is great, translation is pretty good too.

Some people may be turned off in the beginning, but trust me, read it until the Murim arc, that arc is one of the best arcs I've ever read in a KR novel, and I've read dozens of KR novels, from the most popular to obscure ones.

This is the best light/web/whatever novel I've ever read.

It's well written, it's interesting, the characters feel like real people, I like most of them, and I never feel bored reading this.

This is the only series that has ever been good enough to actually make me cry during that one sad moment (boss of the tenth floor memorial service).

You should definitely read it if you havent yet.

Edit: I've since read even further, had more moments where I cried, and more moments where I was awed by the quality of the story telling by the author. Every other novel I've read, KR, JP, CN is all garbage compared to this series. <<less

This novel is simply breathtaking. It's one of my best reads currently, unfortunately I've caught up with the translations. The author has an accurate grasp of his characters, placing them in different situations that immerse the reader, the character development being exquisite and many touching scenes that would carry even the most unfeeling of humans through a spectrum of emotions
