In any case, he can afford him!

With his strength, he’ll definitely be able to let his own man eat meat every day instead of grass.

Zhou Ji, the ‘weakest man’ who had just transmigrated over from the apocalypse and likes to indulge in eating ‘grass’: “…”

This is one of my favorite reads so far! It's filled to the brim with fluff and the MC and ML's relationship development is neither too fast nor too slow. There's action now and then, but the plot is mostly light and focuses on MC and ML's daily life. Highly recommended ^^

Simple but cute story and a little heart warming. Not as intricate as banished to another world but is good enough for me to complete the story. Also, it never fails to make me laugh XD

No H scenes, and focused more on the story.

I think I tried to read this a few years back and couldn't really read it past c30+, but I skimmed the latter chapters and got the gist of the plot.

Only reason I refused to invest my time in this properly is because Shi Li is so. INFURIATING and I had to wait so long for him to get his comeuppance. Plus, not really a fan of hidden identity trope and MC (who ended up being the gong, and not the ML? I was definitely fooled) hiding his real power,... more>> especially because he also hid it for so long from the (real) ML, Xiong Ye. There really isn't any real reason the MC chose to keep a low profile except he's lazy and sick of fighting. If not for the ML's dedication to the tribe, the MC would truly be a salted fish in this life.

But oh my goodness are they adorable together. Like MC being protective of his 'little bear' and helping him to be stronger secretly. The MC is really jaded due to his past and doesn't really care about anything too deeply so the ML slowly getting under his skin and settling into his heart is really sweet to read about.

I think many will agree that the ML is the best part of the story though. I will happily come back and skim through again from time to time just for this endearing ML. <<less

The author is very descriptive with the surroundings, creatures, and the cooking to the point that it gets quite redundant at some point and made me wonder if it's all just to attain a certain word count. Kudos to the translators for the great job, though! Also appreciate the pictures they included so we'll get to actually see the creatures being described while reading.

Although I got a little tired with the lengthy descriptions at some points, I still enjoyed reading and love the story overall. It actually explained why Zhou... more>> Ji did not want to expose how strong and capable he really is to other people. Coming from an apocalyptic world with zombies and all can really damage a person mentally, emotionally, as well as his/her taste with food. So if you suddenly get to choose what kind of food to eat and how to avoid the smell of blood and other stenches, I think what he did or how he acted is understandable.

I also enjoyed how Xiong Ye and Zhou Ji gradually developed their feelings for one another. Then, how strong their love and loyalty is for one another. Also, how Xiong Ye and other people from the pre-historic time are honest and simple. So often times, the worries of Zhou Ji--as a man from more advanced times--gets quickly resolved since they do not needlessly complicate things and can easily adapt/accept.

There were a lot of twists and turns, but they get quickly resolved. I liked it since I do not want something very heavy and dramatic. <<less

First and foremost, the translation is really well-done, making this a very pleasant reading experience. I agree with some other reviewers that this story is sort of bland, but that doesn't bother me because I like slice-of-life and don't mind world-building. Yes, the MC is super OP, and the ML is strong-to-stronger (but definitely not OP) - no issues there either.

Also, don't expect much in the way of romance. The MC and ML have a very good relationship almost from the start but their interactions are more like a little... more>> kid (ML) trying to please their parents (MC) to get praised or rewarded. Romantic stuff doesn't really come up until the last 1/4 of the main story.

What I didn't care for is the constant misunderstandings. Yes, I saw the tag, and I started this expecting for there to be misunderstandings. But not every other chapter!! At some point it was just too much. And even after the misunderstandings are cleared up, the MC continues to withhold/lie to the ML.

Spoiler

One of the biggest inconsistencies that really bothered me is the fact that the MC came from a zombie-pocalypse world but ends up being a super picky eater in his new world. That just doesn't make sense in my head - I understand his love for all fruits & veggies that he didn't have the luxury to eat in his past life, but that should also make him understand the value of protein, even if the taste isn't fantastic. He's picky as if he ate only the finest meals in his entire previous life, which he clearly didn't! 🤔

Also, I'm sure the author wanted to write the MC as a "hiding his true strength until needed" character, but IMO it wasn't done well. He just comes off as having a Princess syndrome / unreasonably lazy/useless more often than not.
[collapse]

I personally liked the parallel world extra more than the actual story, mainly bc I don't feel like the ML is getting tricked and lied to left and right. Of course, misunderstandings still crop up more frequently than necessary.

Overall, the story is ok. I wouldn't read again, but it was decent while it lasted. <<less

A light read that's enjoyable if you're willing to overlook how repetitive some things get.

The plot feels formulaic with how often the author introduce new side characters. Fortunately some side characters are somewhat entertaining and it does help the story from falling flat. The same couldn't be said for all though. Some characters purely exist because the author wants to brag how OP the MC is. It gets kinda boring after a while because they all show the same reactions but just with different names.

As for the romance... it's adequate.... more>> They're very protective of each other and it makes sense since they live in primitive society. I also enjoy the love language of these two (act of service). They did things for each other and there's no power imbalance. It definitely can be sweeter though. <<less

I very much enjoy reading this novel. Xiong Ye, he is my favorite. He's naïvely cute, but smart where it matters. Zhou Ji, I found him frustrating at times, and I felt he could have done more for the people who were close to him and XY from the Big Bear Tribe. You know, like, help them to become a bit stronger. As for Shi Li, he's an idiot. He's the dumbest antagonist for me so far. Smh.

I've been reluctant to read this, like this title has been on my radar for over four years. And I've finally succumbed and mulled past the first few chapters - past the point of ML's perspective on this world and breaking it off with his ex-partner. And I appreciate that the author went out of their way to establish the world before focusing on the MC.

I tried reading this series multiple times from the first chapter, and I've been deterred because the author jumpstarts us readers by throwing around... more>> dinosaur names. I'd like to make my apologizes in advance~ I've read another series that made me reluctant and critical in starting up any tribal society title. I worry that the MC will have a damsel/victim mentality, pushing for a 'modern innovation' agenda, exotism, sexism/classism, and that a clan building title will fall flat because the any agency (decision making) is a privilege only for the main characters...

So far it's promising: there are no gender roles, the MC is (initially) worried about throwing off the 'balance, ' MC is withdrawn and complacent, the exotism is not stereotypes and is introduced as personal preference (/common practice because of practical reasons), MC organically interacts with the supporting characters, and I don't know if the author means to but there is a point early in the story where a theory is insufficient in reality in contrast to a place-based solution. And to whomever is reading this, I have my icks. But this title is surprisingly healing. <<less

Maaaan I've re-read this for two times already, I'm planning to read it again as you can see, but daaaang some comments are misleading, good thing I've read the novel before checking the review here in NU.

Anyways if you're the type of person who enjoy wife of legendary master or any of mxtx's novels I guess you don't mind the slow burn and detail oriented novels, people call it bland when it kinda gets informative or about day to day life, if you're a sucker for that this novel is... more>> for you.

P.S

I don't usually comment on any novels here in NU but this one got me typing my own opinion lol <<less

This story is so cute, and uses a lot of my favorite tropes from transmigration novels, as well as some new tricks I would love to read more of. There's even a sort of Road To El Dorado b-plot involving pretending to be a deity. It's great.

Overall Comments

Overall, I enjoyed reading this a lot. It could have been better but all is well. I definitely liked The Only Favourite Ugly Husband by this author more because the MC actually actively works hard to improve his husband's and his family's lives but this story is enjoyable enough to read too. The new-to-me setting (it was super vivid to me) and the amazing translation kept me reading all the way through.

... more>> Writing/Translation

The translation by XIIN is very good! Top notch! The translator has 2 dedicated editors so there were no errors and everything can be read smoothly! The group seems experienced and passionate about translating so that is to be expected. The writing of the story is also nice, we don't feel distant from the events of the story and it is easy ish to be invested.

Plot

The plot follows half half the romance and the MC raising the ML as he earnestly works to improve the life of his tribe. The extras in the story further follow what happens to the couple and incidentally, the tribe as well in the years that follow. And the last extra follows a parallel world where the MC in the original world at age 48, dreams of the happy life of himself in the main story and decides to check out the Beast King ML. Pretty good.

Themes/What Story Tried to Achieve

The story follows the indifferent MC, who has been living in a terrible apocalyptic world by himself. Now that he has transmigrated to this new Stone Age world, he just wants to be alone and live life. It is understandable that all his actions are to just be emotionally and physically distant from all these strangers after such a life. So all his actions make sense. The person he likes is really the only one he truly cares about. He won't go out of his way to proactively help the tribe but he won't prevent them from learning from him. However, the main draw of a village/kingdom building is when the MC you are reading the pov from has a desire to actively improve the village or kingdom. In the normal trope, this creates this delicious cycle of making the MC likeable and easy to root for so when you see the character's hard work pay off, you also get a sense of satisfaction of seeing something less become more. The feeling of happiness that comes from helping the people you like that appear in the MC is also there to add more dopamine. Then, with the increasing quality of life of the MC, they can continue to earn more stuff. These quick cycles of dopamine hits keep the story addicting for the readerto read.

However, in the story it isn't like that. For one, the MC's situation is not bad. He can grow his own food without any help as much as he wants. He can also hide himself from other dinosaurs with no problem. He can just live by himself anyway so we don't feel any urgency to improve a super bad quality of life situation. Then there is the ML. He's basically the young master of the tribe because he's so capable. Everyone generally likes him because he's a strong yet caring person for them. So his situation isn't bad and is, in fact, much better than the MC. So no need to help him improve either. Only the tribe in general is always hunting for meat but it's all pretty liveable. No one the MC cares about needs to have their life improved. So when the tribe's living situation is improved indirectly by the MC, we don't really care because the MC doesn't care about them enough to actively do something. So for me, the impact of all the tribe building isn't particularly high.

For the setting though, I really like it! It's so unique from what I have read so far, something in the stone age + dinosaurs + tribes + people who can turn into mammals. This is my first story in this clan building genre, so everything is a bit refreshing. From other reviews, it seems there are better stories of this kind out there, so I'm excited haha

As for the romance part, this author has yet another unique ML and a refreshing couple dynamic! I've read The Only Favourite Ugly Husband by them just before this one, and that one has a unique couple dynamic too haha. Here, you can't quite tell who is the shou and who is the gong at first. And even later on, when we realise the strong tribe chief ML will be the shou in the romance, it gives a unique spin haha. Such a manly strong man eagerly volunteers to be the shou in s*x because he's scared being the bottom will be too painful for his lovely, delicate mate hahaha. It was believable how the romance came about. Lots of convenient situations happened to easily let the couple develop feelings, but it was nice to read. Also, for the s*x stuff, there was basically nothing on screen lol. Everything was super vaguely referenced in like one or two sentences, then the story just skips over and moves on. I don't mind it because I find s*x scenes in cn novels super cringy or someone forcing the other to have s*x, which is unpleasant. The topping and bottoming things also happen here but so much is in euphemism and very short, I didn't have to skim anything which is great for me XD

Pacing

Everything is slice of life so the pacing is like that. Interesting things always happen soon after an interesting thing finishes, so you aren't bored. There will usually be a whole chapter of the MC cooking nice food after an interesting thing happens, so some people who don't like this type of stuff might find it slow. As for the clan building stuff, it feels a bit more draggy than if the MC had actually genuinely wanted to improve the clan. As it is, he only wants the clan to be better because the ML and the MC's living situation might become marginally better and not bother him in the future lol.

Characters

The MC is so so for me because of how indifferent he is to everyone. Even when he slowly learns to accept this world as his own, we don't really read this feeling from him so it still vaguely feels like he's not really close. Like, if it was between the tribe and his ML, he would choose to save the ML with zero hesitation. So while he isn't unlikeable or anything, he doesn't make it easy to really root for him and like him. I wish the author had made the MC more vulnerable actually. Maybe with the ML. This would have made us feel closer to the MC and made the relationship between the couple even closer. Here are a few scenes that do this but it's like only one or two scenes and it's only by one character being present in the scene. It would have been so easy to do so! The MC has a horrible past of surviving an apocalypse alone and now has ptsd and all the effects of living in such a place. If the author made him cry or tell something of his situation in a vulnerable way to the ML, I feel like it would make the ML fall deeper in true love! Because this MC who is always too jaded and distant to protect himself, if he can be vulnerable that means he has let down his walls for the ML to really get to know him. I believe there were missed opportunities there.

As for the ML, I adore him! He is just so freaking cute and such a cinnamon roll who just wants the people he loves and his tribe to love happily for all time. He's so excitable and easy to fool because the people at this time just don't have time to learn intrigue because they have to find food to eat! But he wants to protect his tribe and to get as much food as his people wants so he will train hard to be strong enough to do so. He's just so adorable and very likeable XD My favourite character in the whole story.

The side characters are all varied and nice to read about. Barely anyone really sticks around a lot but it is nice to read about when they are there. The villains are okay. My favourite villain is Shi Li but he's not there for a whole chunk in the middle. I really like to see his expectations all overturned and his plans all messed up hahaha.

Well, about the extras, I don't think it's a parallel world, it's more like a rebirth with a few changes due to Shi Li's actions; A butterfly effect.

1.) If Shi Li did not derail from his original path, he and Xiong Ye would still grow old together like in the past life.

2.) Xiong Ye and Shi Li's separation changed Zhou Ji's path. Instead of having no place to live in, he was taken care of Xiong Ye.

If they only stayed together, Zhou Ji might even follow his original path. Facing... more>> more troubles before becoming a beast god.

3.) Due to Shi Li's actions, Zhou Ji was not taken by the Elephant Beast King. After all, Zhou Ji is now living a better life in the Big Bear Tribe.

He even prevented the Big Bear Tribe from being destroyed by the Enemies (The Tiger something)

4.) Zhou Ji developed the Big Bear Tribe. The “gift” from the “beast god” that was supposed to be given to the beast god temple was given to Xiong Ye's tribe instead.

5.) In Shi Li's POV, he mentioned that he felt the presence of the beast god in the beast god temple. Which is probably the reason why he stayed with Xiong Ye 'till the end.

After all, Zhou Ji have no interest in Xiong Ye at that time, he's only thankful to Xiong Ye because he helped him before.

6.) But due to his rebirth, he did several things that are different from the previous life.

Even Zhou Ji directly gave Xiong Ye the cultivation method instead of giving it in a sneaky way because he is now Xiong Ye's spouse. Shi Li never got the cultivation method but he still remember what Xiong Ye shared to him in the previous life anyway.

7.) And in the so-called parallel world, which is actually the original timeline, Zhou Ji dreamt of his experience in the present timeline after rebirth, which also made him derail from his original path.

He got jealous of the present Zhou Ji because he got a mate.

8.) Also, Because of the memories (dream) that he got, he grew closer to Xiong Ye and even indirectly caused Shi Li and Xiong Ye 's separation due to his edict.

9.) So in that original timeline, the memories that he got changed everything. Shi Li directly divorced Xiong Ye and Zhou Ji even showed himself instead of staying inside the temple.

10.) If you noticed, in the original timeline, the beast god temple was more prosperous than the big bear tribe because Zhou Ji stayed there.

And also, before Shi Li's rebirth, everything was basically similar to the original timeline, so we can conclude that it's just an ordinary rebirth.

But since both timeline are now taking different paths, it became a parallel world; Where Zhou Ji from the original timeline married Xiong Ye when he's older, while the Zhou Ji from the present timeline married Xiong Ye when he's younger.

It's both happy ending, nonetheless. <<less

Quite an enjoyable read, but not everyone like come to like.

The best part of the story would be Xiong Ye. He's adorable, hard-working and a little silly. Next to him would be the old priest from the Big Bear Tribe. The old priest cares a lot about the tribe and is very open-minded. He's also hungry for knowledge and wants everyone in the tribe to be well off. Despite his old age, he is quite energetic and is very much involved in the tribe.

Spoiler

The old priest's beast form is a hamster.

[collapse]

Zhou Ji, the MC, on the other hand, I can't find to like. His laziness far exceeds my tolerance. I just really can't bear to like him. Although, his PSTD that caused him to be avoid fighting makes him a bit unique, but he is too lazy in almost everything else. Xiong Ye does almost all the work except for cooking. He is too lazy to teach the tribesmen. He just gives instructions and let them struggle with it.

Spoiler

One example was when they were making pottery. The tribesmen were struggling with making pottery without much knowledge of what to do or what to make. Zhou Ji just sits there, watching them.

And when he took action and made the only acceptable pottery he took it all and didn't share them nor did he give any advice on how to make better pottery.

[collapse]

He could have taught them cooking methods, but he just selfishly cooks only for Xiong Ye and himself. Which really irks me the most. He cooks delicious and fragrant meals right in front of the tribe and lets them watch as he and the ML eat. He doesn't even give them a few pointers in cooking. However, sometimes he would cook for the tribe like hotpot and taught them how to smoke meat.

Spoiler

I also don't like with how he dealt with the beast kings. Although they were wrong, but it's just plain s*avery.

[collapse]

Zhou Ji, the MC, is OP but lazy, which is not my cup of tea. <<less

This novel is kind of unique for me because the settings takes on dinosaurs age and there's a Beast man race. Yes, the human can shift into animal, how fun is that?

Tbh, I'm not quite sure who the MC is, the pov switches between the Gong and the Shou, but mostly the Gong.

... more>> I get a little confused about the CP at first and have to re-check the comments because there are another person that transmigrated other than the Gong.

Since he comes from modern world, the Gong is obviously OP with his knowledge that he's promoted as God in the end (kind of expecting that, actually). But half of the novel he hides his power and acts like a salted fish because
Spoiler

when he uses his power, he'll get berserk and trample on anyone on his way.

[collapse]

Pros : The Beast men's evolution is fun to read. It kind of reading a history book; from stone age to knowing how to farm and breeding livestock (I want to breed dinosaur too >, <), to learning how to write and pottery.

Cons :
Spoiler

How the heck stone age people know salt exist? They don't know about any other seasonings but the seaside clan knows how to farm salt. Perhaps the author uses it to get the certain plots flow, but it still unsettle me.

Also, perhaps I expect too much on the other transmigrated person a.k.a the villain. I thought he'll be the big boss but in the end, meh.

Overall, average but a nice read. If you are bored but don’t want to real a complex book, I will recommend this novel.

It’s about an OP MC transmigrating into a dinosaur filled stone age, a simple and cute ML and some obstacles that were just annoyances.

I did like that there was an alternative timeline in the extras, it gave you a different perspective on the characters.

In short, the story is a silly, cute BL with an OP MC and simple minded ML.

This book kind of went up and down at times, mainly because of the plot and characters of the story.

Characters:

  • The characters seem to mostly be reactionary characters with the exception of the ML, and the main villain doesn't appear enough for me to make him his own separate character. The main villain could be put into a group called "I'm an obstacle made to be an obstacle" for all I care. As for the background characters, most of what they do is react to the MC's actions and praise him for his genius. In a sense, there's nothing wrong with that logically. They're the definition of tribesmen, and when someone from millions or billions of years in the future comes and shows them some "futuristic" values or technology, then it would make sense for them to always be in awe of the person, especially when they don't know that. There's also the fact that the person just keeps making their lives better and better. But even so, it still kind of annoys me. That's the kind of move you see in an average copy and pasted isekai or fantasy novels, and I rate those stories as 1 star because of how oversaturated they are.
Story:

  • The story is meant to be lighthearted and fun, and I can get behind that. But there are definitely parts of the story that make me want to sleep for at least 20 years. It's not a matter of whether the story is slow, that's different. It's when the story of boring, mainly because of how repetitive it is. In the beginning, the first time may be okay, but the second or third time will make you groan. Near the end it will get better, but I'm not sure how many people will be able to read that far.

Amazing read.

I love how the author thought ahead and explained what seems to be convenient incidents in a hilarious way. Lots of funny moments, and I love the relationships of the side characters with the main characters.

I didn't expect to get so invested in the main pairing but then I did, and was fully cheering them on in both the main novel and the extras.

... more>> The villain was thoroughly annoying and definitely served their purpose as a satisfying face-slapping play.

This novel made me feel extremely satisfied by the end and wrapped up in a lovely heartwarming way. Will definitely read again sometime. <<less
