“Love is like water, taking on countless shapes. You may not be able to touch it, but it will gently surround you.” —The Shape of Water Movie

[Synopsis 1]

In a shipwreck, Yun Xi sinks to the bottom of the sea with the ship.

In the moment before she loses unconsciousness, a pair of soft lips presses against hers.

When she awakens again, she finds herself submerged in a dim pool, lying next to a woman.

The woman is completely naked, her long, wavy hair cascading like thick seaweed, her features strikingly beautiful with an exotic charm, and she has a pale blue fish tail.

The mermaid sways her soft tail, wrapping around Yun Xi’s body like a serpent, leaning close to sniff her scent and marking her with it.

Yun Xi’s eyes roll up and she faints again.

[Synopsis 2]

After a month of being stranded on a deserted island, kept by the mermaid.

Yun Xi can no longer hold on and decides to go on a hunger strike.

The innocent mermaid, thinking Yun Xi is ill, ventures up the mountain and into the sea, searching for everything edible. She carefully places the food beside Yun Xi, watching her anxiously, nudging her with her nose as if pleading. Eventually, she holds Yun Xi while crying uncontrollably.

Hearing the mermaid’s sobs, Yun Xi’s heart softens, and she ultimately abandons the hunger strike.

She must survive, just like all the other creatures on this island; survival is the top priority.

[Synopsis 3]

After a year of living together on the deserted island with the mermaid.

Yun Xi tries to leave the mermaid and live independently.

The mermaid doesn’t understand why Yun Xi wants to leave her. She believes she is different from humans, thinking that’s why Yun Xi doesn’t love her.

She cries and begins to tear off her own scales, bleeding profusely, wishing to become human like Yun Xi so they can be together forever.

A story about survival on a deserted island, while also falling in love with a mermaid.

I’m one half of the translating group for this novel and I’m here to sell you on it! I could talk endlessly about Taken Home by a Mermaid, but to be brief, the three big draws (mild spoilers) are:

Biology: surely you have come to the mermaid novel to read about the mermaid, and the author does not disappoint. She has a background in biology/medical sciences and it shows, not just in the mermaid but also in the world Yun Xi has to survive in. But the mermaid first and... more>> foremost—none of that halfhearted “FL sometimes has cat ears and a tail pop out” type nonhuman romance. This novel’s mermaid purrs, brings courtship gifts, starts off not knowing human language, purrs, has moving ears, a prehensile tail, purrs, g*ooming/licking behaviour, hibernation, cold-blooded heat-seeking... The author picks out all the best monster tropes and turns them all into a coherent, beautiful creature. Once you read this book, it will ruin you for all other monster/demihuman romance.

Survival: there is no magical system with tasks and rewards, no space, no cheats (doting mermaid aside). It’s Hatchet but with a Swiss Army knife and on a tropical island. Progress is hard-won and more satisfying as a result, and setbacks happen. It takes multiple days and chapters before Yun Xi succeeds in starting her first fire; she’s not going to stumble across an open-air iron vein and figure out smithing. The novel is slice-of-life in a sense, but life is hard. Meanwhile, though, the mermaid is learning about all sorts of things: fire! Soups! Spears! Kissing! Civilisation is incredible!!! The two-hit combo of Yun Xi’s pride and the mermaid’s awe whenever some invention works out makes for addictive reading.

Character interior: Yun Xi spends the majority of the novel alone with the mermaid, who is determinedly learning language but not very good at deep emotional talks. So a lot of the narration concerns Yun Xi’s memories of her childhood in rural China, which sets up plausible explanations for how she knows some of her basic survival/crafting skills. Yun Xi’s upbringing clearly shapes the person she is today, with all her insecurities and preference for logical thinking. She struggles with being separated from human society, and with her own feelings for the mermaid, even long after she understands the mermaid is sentient and has rich enough emotional intelligence to have a romance with. Her thoughts and detailed memories make for a really fleshed-out protagonist who feels highly realistic. On the other hand, we see the mermaid mostly through Yun Xi’s eyes, and rarely peek inside her mind—but she’s an open book. An open, adoring book, who has chosen Yun Xi as her partner for life. The world is simple for her: be happy with Yun Xi. The author has a simple “mermaid’s diary” entry for each chapter, one or two sentences; it can be pretty funny to read about Yun Xi angsting over her own emotional avoidant tendencies and whether she’s being unfair to the mermaid’s feelings, followed by the mermaid’s diary: “Today I picked fruits with my partner and watched the sunset with her, happy~”

I have yet to find a better nonhuman baihe romance on JJWXC! Highly highly recommend giving this one a try! <<less

I really like this premise of story. It touched on psychological issues, specifically about depression which is expected in survival theme. We got our protagonist often struggling with despair many times, gain hope, just to lose it again, and many setbacks along the way. Aside from the advantage of her limited childhood experience in rural area, she got basically no other advantage (except for maybe being protected by a mermaid who is considered strong). Her knowledge is not the type that know-it-all-like-encyclopedia but the average level of modern understanding. Most... more>> of her survival knowledge ultimately relied heavily on observations of other animal and experimenting.

The morality aspect and biological differences of interspecies relationship also adds on to the angst. Looking forward to the rest of the story till the end. <<less
