Wu Jin, as a trainee from a certain entertainment company, had a peerless, stunning face. He was qualified to debut as a lead performer even if he just sat there and did nothing.

After signing up for a certain talent show, the shining path to stardom beckoned to him––

Wu Jin: Hold on, why is this show different from what we agreed on? Wasn’t it supposed to be about jumping around, dancing, and singing songs? Why do you have to send me out into the wilderness…

Program Producer: You’re a once-in-a-century high appearance value competitor! We’re relying on you to save the program’s ratings!

Wu Jin: … I seem to be on the wrong show. Wait a minute, this isn’t an idol show, it’s a fighting survival reality show ahhh!!

Ten months later, the little cutie who had been thrown into the show––

Turned into a human weapon.

Powering up through various instances, slight entertainment circle elements.

Extremely overpowered gong x little cutie who grows to become an overpowered shou.

Oh my god this was really creative, entertaining, and cute!!!!!

The game arcs are so creative and engaging, even readers like me who aren't too interested wouldn't feel like skipping! (Unlike in VEN... definitely skipped several chapters there...)

And the CPs are so!!!!! cute and healthy!!!! The only con is that there aren't enough of the side CPs (੭ु ‾᷄ᗣ‾᷅) ੭ु⁾⁾

Other than that, this is really well-written. You can easily tell the amount of effort and heart that the author put into it.

I'm still not over this book so I had to write this review to rave over how good everything was. SURPRISE! Is a hefty story that comes out to 225 chapters; it encompasses intergalactic politics, survival show games, training, romance, and friendship. There were many thrilling parts that I would love to reread and very few instances dragged. I'm sure readers all have their favorite "elimination matches" as I did. Granted, they were all well thought out and it really showcases the brilliance of strategy by pitting brains against brawn.... more>> Considering that Yu Jin starts out weak, his strength and assets progression and development is realistic which makes us readers really root for him. It's a great plot and there's a plethora of amazing side characters who bring much-needed comedic relief and competition to motivate MC's growth. <<less

This is my first time writing a review, but this novel is such a gem I feel I must share my thoughts in order to promote it in the rankings and convince more people to read it!! I won't bother summarizing it again - the plot is exactly as you see it in the description here.

Surprise! Is not my usual kind of novel in the slightest. I'm very much a fan of xianxia/wuxia and politic-heavy historical novels. I picked this up mainly due to the translator (who is extremely, extremely... more>> talented along with their editors; I can't thank any of them enough for all their hard work) who I was introduced to via Glory (another great novel you should check out if you enjoy e-sports). And for the first 30-40 chapters, I enjoyed myself, but I wasn't that interested. I still don't know what switch flipped for me after that, but once I got into the swing of this novel, intrigued enough by the immediately likable and engaging characters and the sugar-sweet dynamic between the main cp, I fell in love hard.

The plot of this novel feels comedic, and it is, but it's also very intelligent. The author works very hard to make each elimination match's theme and dynamics as varied, complex, and interesting as possible, drawing from a multitude of sources and theories and cultures to create exciting challenges for the competitors. Whether or not they're entirely accurate or believable is 110% besides the point - allow yourself to get lost in the enjoyment of the thing, never mind if it's possible! I went into this for the pairing, but I'm sticking with it for the plot as well as the characters.

Speaking of which, the main couple is so delicious it hurts. I adore Wu Jin - he's absolutely the sweetest thing, and so incredibly hard working and naturally clever at the same time. It's incredibly satisfying watching him rise through the ranks both with the help of Wei Shi and on his own merit. Maybe I'm just a sucker for an honest and ambitious protagonist, but I think he's something special! The slowburn of the romance is exquisite. Additionally, at least as far as I've gotten, there's absolutely no need to worry about r*pe/dubcon/anything abusive at all between the main pairing. Wei Shi is very aggressive and possessive, but he only comes close to crossing the line once (and that time he's pretty much completely out of his head), and really genuinely respects and cherishes Wu Jin at every turn. Wu Jin treats him in kind! They are beyond precious.

I've seen some complaints of repetition or this novel just being fluff, and while that's fair, I do think it has a bit more to offer than people give it credit for. Even if it doesn't feel like something you'd normally read, I urge you with all my heart to give it a try! Just stick with it for the first fifty chapters, at least, especially if you like slowburn romances, humor, and smart protagonists! I swear on my life you won't regret it! <<less

A Chinese version of Hunger Games.

The tipe of novel that's so interesting at first, boring in the middle & not really good at the end.

The MC had too many flaws & the ML just too strong. So I confused if the MC journey from weak to strong is the point of this novel or its about the ML fixing his past because ML story was so dominant than MC in this novel.

I've read this novel until the end + extra. To be honest, its not really good..

Spoiler

The MC & ML are the product of genetic modification. At first its only ML but latter in the story MC suddenly also became a genetic modification product.

The MC went to a show basically like a Hunger games. He was weak, he met ML, ML start teaching him from weak to strong and MC in return help ML to fix his emotional lock because of his past experience in genetic modification gov. Project - accidentally. ML learnt to love MC, MC also like ML. And then Happy ending. ML & MC won the hunger game & ML can finally move on from his past.

If I used one word to describe this novel... INTENSE!

The story is way better than I expected with incredibly diverse and interesting instances that the characters enter to survive the game show. Again and again I’ve been impressed with the knowledge and hard work the author put into it, to the point where I’m now a DIEHARD FAN! The writing style of the author is one minute intelligent and informative and then the next is so funny you have literal tears streaming down your face from laughing.

The characters are not... more>> stuck in a ‘specific setting’ but are allowed to grow and develop in interesting ways that occasionally take a person by surprise and make a person squee in glee in excitement. And the fluff! Oh man... so satisfying and INTENSE.

I refuse to give anything away, so go read it yourself! You’ll be glad you did!

All I have left to say is... MORE PLEASE!!! <<less

All of Alexa Esme's ramblings +1, except I haven't read "Founder of Daobolism" yet. I have a sort of unique problem. When I laugh or fangirl too hard, I start hyperventilating. This story makes me hyperventilate a LOT. Even more than "Reader and Protagonist Definitely Have To Be In True Love", which is my favorite bl novel. Read it, you won't regret it. The fluff with have your brain exploding due to meng overdose!!!! LITTLE WITCH, GANBATTE!!

Idk about y'all but I ate this up. I usually HATEE sci-fi/futuristic/interstellar stuff but I could not drop this. Now I think I might start reading some more.

scenarios were amazing. The whole relationship dynamic between the MCs was a little strange to me at first cuz wdym you're tryna eat the bunny guy alive?? But I didn't have that much trouble getting used to it and ended up enjoying it later on.

I love the MC. With the whole cute bunny thing going on with him, you'd think he'd have the... more>> kind of personality that you'd just assume would be constantly naïve, skittish, etc., but, throughout the novel, the MC never ran away from a problem. He really grew. He learned, worked hard, and made up for his shortcomings. When he lacked something, he didn't run to the ML for help. Instead, he worked on himself. I seriously respect that.

Anyway this was gas y'all give it a read ✌️ <<less

So good!!

I want to write a lengthy review, but it's hard to narrow down what to focus on. This is a very full novel, with many elements of content.

It feels like the author may have studied abroad. There's so much detail about many western cultures and figures! Really impressive breadth of knowledge. Lots of interesting research!

It's agreed that the strongest point of this novel is in character development. I would like to include worldbuilding and ingenious puzzles as other strong points. The backstory justification for the MC and ML personalities... more>> and abilities are fully explained, with a worldbuilding backstory that ties in to the overall plot. Another point that impressed me was not just the character and relationship development, but the mutual respect. It's so rare to see gong who respects that shou doesn't want him to interfere and make life easier.

Incredibly impressive and strong experience overall. I kept waiting for it to drag and stop being good, but really I would say the source of fatigue was from me. (Around elimination 5, fwiw.)

Describing this to my friends, one called it slowburn. It took fifty chapters to hold hands. Despite that, they have an incredibly strong bond right from the start, and spend the novel caring very deeply for each other.

Any more is probably spoilery! <<less

First of all, if you're looking for your next BL fix, this one is it.

Length, translation and writing style, plot and fluff is all here.

Second, if you love instances and horror-style game solving, you get the best of both worlds without ever panicking that your favourite side character is going to die "for suspense" since its all for a survival show where no-one dies. But we still get to see people showing off skills, risking life and death and taking it all very seriously.

For me, I'd liken this series to... more>> a Agatha Christie Whodunnit rather than a heart stopping thriller.

The characters (main and side) are likeable (or hateable for the villain) and MC's character development is super satisfying. The ML is supportive and builds up the MC and supports their wider relationships.

If you're sick of ML's that kick puppies out of doors to get some hankypanky or don't let anyone (even best friends) touch the MC like they're an object just for the ML's sake, this one is for you!

Let's promote healthy relationships for ML's and MC's! They both deserve rights!

Also big thanks to xiin and their team for a kick-ass translation! ≪3 <<less

Honestly I wasn't expecting the story to be so fresh and unique, I read it straight from start to end. The arcs are so peculiar that I actually put more effort studying and doing research about the terms, historical figures, Darwinism, dinosaurs, guns, and other stuff than when I was at school. I will probably reread this again in the future. Kudos to the author and translators for this wonderful piece of art!

There are no important spoilers in my review since it's a waste to not find out yourself how... more>> the story went.

Spoiler

I love love love our MC here. He has a strong God Wei beside him but he chooses to go wild and train hard until he also got OP than choosing a shortcut to success. I especially liked that they didn't make their marriage public until when God Wei retired but they were so open about it that it was like people expected it a long time ago and fans were just waiting for closure.

[collapse]

Btw there are a lot of comments saying how the main and side characters were fully fleshed out. I don't really agree with that. Honestly, I think the author put more effort on the background of the games and arcs for the Crosson Show than the character interaction. But that's ok since I loved the games especially the dinosaur-farming and Palace of Versailles. I can't really explain why I'm unsatisfied with the interactions but anyway if I were to rate that it's 4.2/5. It's like there's something missing.

Spoiler

Anddddd Ming Yao and Zuo Botang!!! To be honest, I liked their CP more than the main CP. I found the extras about them so fulfilling and fluffy. I maybe just cried a little bit hehe. I thought Ming Yao was a little spoiled baby but he's one of the characters that had a noticeable character growth in the story.

The pressure on Jingyi and White Moonlight are similar. Both were teams who went through hard times and the old teams gave way to the new generation. I was kind of regrettable about Lin Jue. He gave so much but he's going to be forgotten because of the new generation. I really wish Lin Jue and Little Witch had at least one game together, acting badass and beating others. Sadly, injuries really ruin life and career so guys take care of your body.

[collapse]

Also, I think King of Hearts was kind of forgotten?

Spoiler

I was expecting a match between King of Hearts against Wei Shi or against Little Witch on the Star League but the extras just skimmed through the League and basically just summarized it all. That was kind of disappointing but anyway, youth is much more fun. It also applies in how competitions about young people are more welcomed by the audience.

[collapse]

Also please read the story until the end because you're going to miss out on a LOT. The plot only gets fleshed out near the end so don't expect to understand the story until about Chapter 170. <<less

I had this novel pulled up on a tab for almost a year, and finally read it over a span of a week.

First of all, as others have mentioned, I'm really impressed with the knowledge that the author chooses to use in their book. For example, there was one chapter that mentioned Edward Waite, a co-creator of a tarot deck. Out of curiosity, I search him up, and to my surprise he actually existed! While this may be information that can easily be accessible from a simple web search, it... more>> is still impressive that the author took the time and effort to include these non-mainstream factual content in the novel in an accurate way.

As for the MC, he's really cute and every description about him reminds us of his fluffiness.
Spoiler

However, there are moments where he demonstrates strong capabilities. That first time he was finally able to dance in this new world on stage and that first time he was finally able to grasp the concept of using a gun by imagining a dance form really left a deep impression on me - I was able to strongly visualize his stage presence (probably also because I follow idol content too) so it was amazing to see those moments.

[collapse]

There's also valid reasoning behind what the ML's attachment is and how, not really clear on the why but then again feelings don't always need to have a clear cut reason as to why they exist. Anyways, to me the ML is one of the greenest flags I've seen.

Edit: Complete

Wow. I can't believe I haven't seen recommendations about this novel like I have for others (like the legendary Face of Devil and Little Mushroom). This is extremely well written, humorous in many parts (I actually laughed aloud when it came to the figurative burns so strong ice couldn't help), emotional in many parts (imagery so strong I can almost see it) and well paced. Our little bunny MC is very smart, half because he is so hardworking, and becomes someone we can be proud of. Something that surprised me the most and I couldn't see it coming was also well explained and developed.
Spoiler

I refuse to believe that I was the only one (besides the MC) that actually believed the MC transmigrated through time T^T

[collapse]

Partly because of my bad habits but mostly because this was such a great novel, I finished chapters 180 to the end including the extras all in one go by pulling an all nighter and ended up watching the sun rise. It was worth it. <<less

I've already finished this one since a long time ago; however, I was too lazy to create an account to write a review during that time. So since I'm coming back to re-read right now, I thought I might leave some reviews.

This novel is absolutely a gem! I love the plots, and I love the characters! Especially our MC, Wu Jin. He's a cutie pie but he's not a weakass or pushover MC who only know how to depend on others people at all. He's very smart and know how... more>> to survive by his own. I like his character's growth the most.

More importantly, the survival show's themes are epic too. Every arc is very interesting. It got me hooked since chapter one. Anyway, if you enjoyed reading an unlimited flow novels with teamwork and interesting themes, a smart and cute MC, and a strong and reliable ml, then do not hesitate any longer, you should go for it.

Ps: For unlimited flows novels that I've finished reading, I recommend: Mist, The Earth is online, Global university entrance examination, Card room, Game loading, I wasn't born luck, and this novel (Surprise! The supposed talent show is actually-!). <<less

It was good at first but then it gets boring, I couldn't get into the story after like 50 chapters. It felt draggy. I keep pausing on reading this for days. Maybe because I really don't have that much patience, but the story is interesting you know. And somehow by reading through some spoilers, everything was explained well. So if you have some questions and some patience, then read through the end of the story.

Won't rate yet but taking a break from the story as I've grown a bit bored with it. If I were to rate it right now would probably be 3.5 or 4. Just feel like this novel is trying to be too many things at once.

Also a warning for anyone who thinks this is fantasy

Spoiler

This story is pure Sci-fi, he didn't transmigrate. The memories are from immersion therapy, MC is a genetically born and modified emotional support pet for the genetically modified human weapons. He was basically made for the ML (even though another "weapon" picked out his characteristics) so their initial attraction is due to this

[collapse]

Honestly not sure how I feel about this novel. Sometimes I think it's 5 star material and other times completely average (would not say it's bad though)

The history in the contest is a nice touch, even if some of it isn't completely accurate, but at the same time the rounds take too long. The rounds make up the bulk of the novel and are also sometimes needlessly complicated (this could be the translation, not sure) it's not that I couldn't follow them but it was just boring at times. Or I was so wrapped up in trying to figure out what was going on *cough* the dinosaur part, that reading became a chore. The flow in the novel doesn't work for me.

The MC isn't OP from the get go and his cute hardworking self is hard to dislike. I love that he pushed himself to get better and was growing by leaps and bounds... then nothing. ML still always has to come save him. ML is the standard cold CEO and is silent 99% of the time
Spoiler

it's explained that ML is this way because of the genetic modification and the lock... but even after MC helps with the lock he doesn't show much emotion, even to the MC. He is either kissing him, silently accompanying him or the 1 emotion he will show is anger when MC is taken away

[collapse]

The romance is barely there. If you took out all the contest parts the romance would be like 10 chapters, with the bulk being the memory parts
Spoiler

also don't exactly get the emotional lock thing and how they can go into a person's memories. It does remind me of a game I played called Psychonauts though 🤣

[collapse]

The side characters are fun and not deep by any means but provide some comedy.
Spoiler

though the whole part with Zoe in the French round was OOC, he was set up as the responsible team captain with experience in the show, then all of a sudden he is so immature and protective of MC in the middle of the game, didn't wait till after, nooo he pulled s*upid stunts during the round

[collapse]

The survival show is something new, though I don't get the debut thing.
Spoiler

white moonlight has a team and they are trainee's for it so why do they need to debut with the show? Only thing I can think of is it's like produce 101 temp group then they go back to their agency?

[collapse]

The "future" will be very interesting 1 minute then very 21st century the next. For example the dinosaur world, the AI ghosts, of course flying cars then there are radios with FM station, books/handouts made of paper etc. The immersion in the story gets broken.

Lastly there are a few inconsistencies in the story, but since I can't be sure that isn't the translation I won't go to much into it.

Will probably pick this back up to finish but I don't think this will ever be a novel I would reread. <<less

Not finished with the story yet but so far mostly liking this.

However, there are couple points that keep bothering me and it might be an issue for you as well. It might not. On the other hand, there is a lot of good stuff, so if you are like me, eventually your brain will filter out the stuff you don't like and enjoy the rest.

What keeps bothering me:

  1. Supposed setting
    Spoiler

of interstellar era 1000 years in the future. Yet somehow, almost everything is like 21st century, just moved to planets (but seems like only Earth's history is in play), some added tech and genetic engineering - most of it for plot reasons. Outside of the plot devices, there is little feel of any sort of interstellar era. Normal foods, normal animals, normal clothes, mostly normal weapons... And as much as I love the arcs (and they are really well thought out and creative), does it really make sense that everything in interstellar era with many mentioned planets would be themed from Earth? The sponsor companies are from various planets too yet somehow there is only Earth in their eyes.

    [collapse]
  2. The chinese BL MC/ML stereotype cliches.
    Spoiler

I understand this is explained by the plot, but was it really needed?

    [collapse]
Like some other reviewer said, eventually my brain just started skipping the paragraphs describing MC's cuteness, dewy misty eyes, fluffy curls, lips and neck ripe for biting, waist to ab*se... The ML's oppresive cold handsomeness, OP-ness, possessiveness... well I'm sure you know just the type. Thank god there is character growth but really...
  3. Minor nitpicks like masks and breathing equipment conveniently disappearing when it's time to kiss. I'm probably weird, but I keep realizing these details and it breaks the immersion.
Things I really like:

  1. The side characters - love love love love them. I have skipped ahead to read some of the extras and really wish there was more to some of them... like
    Spoiler

    Jingyi.

    [collapse]
Their characters are varied and they are not there just to be a background wallpaper like in some other novels. I especially really appreciate there are not some dumb one-use villains.
  2. The arcs - honestly despite the strangeness of them in the setting itself, they are well thought out to good amount of details, MC figuring them out is not completely unrealistic despite some deus ex machina here and there. And it's pretty enjoyable to be able to learn something new!
  3. MC's dedication and hard work to better himself instead of instant gold finger.
  4. Translation that makes reading this a delight.

'There's a fierce beast in my heart, and the reins are in you hands'

It wasn't my plan to read this novel yet because I was reading SCI at that moment and I only tried the first three chapters to see if I'm going to like it. I didn't expect that I was going to get hooked that early!

This is my very first Unlimited Flow novel that I've read without the 'real death' into it. Yeah, this novel includes survival instances and stuff but the casualty level in those... more>> instances is zero. That makes this novel so refreshing.

Our MC, Wu Jin/Little Witch, is one of the most likeable characters I've ever read, in my opinion. He was so energetic and bouncy but gentle and obedient at the same time. I didn't expect that Little Witch could trigger my maternal instinct. Even in the novel, he has more mother fans than girlfriend fans. He was also like a kid who was forced to hold weapons and was thrown in the crowd of rowdy and muscled men. He was an absolute newbie without any knowledge about weapons, guns, tactical maneuver and survival at all, but he was clever af! He was actually considered as the brain of the their team, and there are times when some contestants even 'copied his homework'. I love reading how Little Witch grows little by little. Oh, and I almost forgot! I also love his small curls so much. It was like his curls has its own personality. His curls absolutely defined his moods and it was also some sort of big boss radar LMAO

On the other hand, our ML, Wei Shi, is the definition of a god! He was basically a human weapon and a very overpowered character. But him being an OP character has some twist into it, because he deliberately wasn't showing his real strength. Except for Little Witch, nobody even remembered he existed as a contestant. He has that skill in scouting that can help him hide his presence. He is Little Witch's big boss and a very doting lover. I actually wished a couple of times to have a boyfriend like him. He is not too domineering and what I liked about him the most is he respects and supports Little Witch's decisions so much, especially in those important life situations. He never forced his own choices onto his lover like some typical overbearing partner. He lets Little Witch do whatever he wants but the big boss always make sure that he's right there if anything goes out of control. He helped Little Witch to train but when it comes to the competition, he lets him improve his skills on his own. I really respect his character so much. And did I mention how much he dotes his lover?! Like he sponsored a single elimination round to let Little Witch show the fruit of his efforts, but without abusing his authority at all.

The part that I also loved about this novel aside from the humor is the supporting characters. Little Witch and Wei Shi have a competitive relationship with the other contestants but outside the elimination rounds, they are all good friends. I adore all of their interactions so much! And also, this is the first time I've seen a couple raising a menagerie. Little Witch and Big Boss literally raised a rabbit, a cat, a pterosaur and a flamingo as their pets, and they almost raised an alpaca too (which was a pity they didn't get to own it).

In my opinion, this is a very unique survival novel and it was very worthy of having so many chapters. There are also some twists that you would never expect. I highly recommend this novel so much, especially for those who loved UF novels. <<less
