In Great Ruins, the old, weak and disabled elders of Disabled Elderly Village picked up an infant by the riverside and named him Qin Mu, raising him up with blood and sweat. This day, as the night descended and the darkness shrouded Great Ruins, Qin Mu left home…

Become a villain undulating in the spring breeze!

That’s what Blind told him.

This is the rise of Qin Mu’s road to becoming a villain!

It started of nicely, then slightly went downhill after the first few chapters.

The cultivation was nice. MC and side characters was nice. The world set up was also interesting.

The major problem was a clear plot. You can even call this a slice of life with tons of info dump.

... more>> MC had no goal and clear motivation. There's no clear objective or struggle or cliff hanger or things that make I as reader want to read the next chapter.

So, the story just goes on and on and on in straight line. MC train. MC fight. MC train again and then fight some more.

It's not a bad read, but too bland for my taste, so I'll just dropped it here. <<less

This novel is really refreshing since instead of cultivators relying on whatever their ancestors made they instead innovate and even fix the cultivation system that was broken during the old days.

The enlightenment that comes to the MC isn't some superfluous bullsh*t that parrots and regurgitates the usual "heaven, earth, death, life blah blah blah" that we are supposed to believe. Whats good about this novel is that the Actual system for cultivation in this novel is profound and rooted in Chinese mysticism and tradition that my realm cant even comprehend.

Also... more>> the deeper your understanding of the mysteries of the heaven and earth in this universe the stronger your power gets. I love how the MC is strong not because of some heaven sent gift or chugging down herbs and whatever drugs there is but instead his powers comes from his understanding of the mysteries of the heaven and earth that he comprehends on his own adventures instead of being handed to him on a silver platter.

The drama and characters in this novel is the single most and best quality of writing ive ever read of any cultivation novels. The fights aren't dragged out or repetitive descriptions of their moves meant to pad the chapters all so the author can milk the novel dry.

This novel is an outlier among the tr*sh junk food xianxia that should be held as the gold standard for a cultivation novel with actual character writing <<less

Early pacing issues, but it soon takes of sprinting. I read from chapter 100 to 1500 in a matter of days, and I only slowed down because I didn't want it to end. Some people might complain about the author rambling or putting unnecessary filler, ... more>>

The cultivation system is unique, fresh and evolving through the story as the MC and relevant side characters all innovate. The world is huge and every once in a while when you think you can see all the actors on stage another chunk of history is revealed and the mess that is the peak of the universe becomes messier and dirtier. The story shines when it is forcing the main character to grit his teeth and struggle.

Blind is an as*hole who raised the MC and he says a lot of sh*t, nearly as much as cripple but mute is the worst. Granny is a pretty old hag, butcher lost his legs, Granpa Ma lost an arm but the village chief lost all his limbs, apothecary is the scariest, the weakest and seems to have misplaced the skin on his face. Deaf put metal nails in his ears. They all live in the great ruins, a place where the darkness roars and the memories of Gods replay, why? Because they have all for one reason or another lost their Dao hearts.

Qin Mu is found by them and raised, they all learn to heal and eventually sneak out of the village to watch him after he is grown. And through various background character arcs they climb out of the shadows. Qin Mu is either the most talented idiot or the craziest prodigy, he takes an unconventional route and ends up at the peak of a different similar looking mountain.

Im only at chapter 9 but I just wanted to take note of it so far. More then 6 chapters so far are just the MC running and every character other then the villagers being hypocrites. The so called righteous elders are just c*nts that admonish the villagers for being devils but act like pricks and order their disciples to act just as shitty as they claim others to be. The disciples call the villager that was making clothes evil because she killed an elk and then they go on... more>> to kill dozens of elk to find the MC and still fail to catch him. It shows that the author cant right proper villians.. Its annoying. But i'll still keep reading because other then that its interesting <<less

at the beginning of the chapter I considered this novel to be one of the best Xuanhuan novels I have read.

but in chapter 300+ the novel got worse. A lot of disappointments that I experienced in this novel, such as when he met his father who had spent several chapters and ended with a meaningless light conversation, WTF what the author did ? No side character developments, and romance is too bad too. The fight was also too little and not tense at all.

actually this novel was so good before... more>> the author destroyed it himself <<less

Your enjoyment of this story is going to depend very heavily on what you want out of it.

The main weakness is that literally anything can happen at any time. This applies to not only the fights but also the plot.

The fights that don't end immediately are pretty awful. As literally anything can and will happen, there's not any point in trying to predict or anticipate anything. It's not weird for the MC to pull something entirely new out of his ass. The only assurance is that MC will end up... more>> looking awesome - or is supposed to, at any rate. As a result, they are a real drag. They're also very difficult to follow. It's not only "anything goes" but also very high-fantasy, or at least the xianxia/xuanhaun version of it. I suspect the raws might be written very poetically or something, but it certainly doesn't come through at all in the translation. Your best bet is to just roll with it, because it doesn't matter anyway. You really just have to get through them a lot of the time. It's by far the most unfortunate part of this story. I almost rated this a 3 because of it. I'd probably give it a 3.5 if I could.

Another thing you may not like is how poorly the MC really takes advantage of the techniques he has available. This is mostly the very normal stuff - an amazing disguise technique that is only ever used to try to play a trick on others, but never used proactively to keep one safe. So if you can tolerate it elsewhere, it shouldn't be too hard to tolerate here either.

The setup isn't too s*upid though. He's really got a lot of advantages, but at the same time it's not just stuff that's being done for him. Sure he got given like 5-10 top-of-the-world-level techniques and is pretty good at them despite being barely a teenager, but he's had a small hoard of old monsters devoted to raising him since he was a baby. He certainly does get treasures and stuff too, but overall it mostly feels like he's at least worked for what he's got, unlike some of the other extremely OP MCs out there. But he also does a lot of comprehending stuff in like 1/1000th of the expected time too which... well is still his own ability at least.

The translation is also just tolerable. No real work has been done to make it understandable in English, and there are a lot of the typical translation oddities that come through. "You can't win me" instead of "You can't beat me" kind of stuff. It's understandable with just a little though usually, and if you read other not-amazing translations you're probably used to it already.

What makes this novel worth reading is really the MC's interactions with people, and his grandpas and grandma in particular. They're really quite good, and very funny. Though if you don't enjoy them, I'd just drop this immediately even if you've read only a few chapters. Fortunately these bits pop up frequently. Unfortunately after the first 100 chapters or so (very roughly) it starts moving away from that and the fights get more frequent and longer. Occasionally the author will also just beat a decent joke into the ground.

But if you enjoy the banter, then yeah. It's worth dealing with the rest of the novel in my opinion. But again, if you don't enjoy it (and you should know pretty quickly) just move on and don't waste your time. <<less

First 100 chapters (+ - 10 probably) are simply 10 out of 5.

Until MC leaves Great Plains. In fact it had a lot of secrets so author could develop it further but whatever.

[collapse]

Humor, characters, suspence, secrets, powers - everything is incredibly interesting and well designed. MC is out of ordinary but he is still overshadowed by elders, monsters and others so he does not shine too brightly.

After that story goes downhill with typical xuanhuan/xianxia or whatever route where side characters exist just to glorify MC with the typical enemy, big brother will defeat him, oh no brother lost, MC takes action and defeats. Or like he is great master on the level of some elder but MC as always can teach them It is really striking especially after stellar 100 chapters.

Usually it is not that noticeable due to mediocricy from the very beginning until the story falls apart completely in 500+ chapters as in almost every chinese novel... But here the beginning was just too geat and it feels very early how worse it becomes. <<less

The begging of novel was interesting, I kind of liked it.

As someone before mentioned it gave me greatest disciple Kenichis Vibe. Where someone ordinary is surrounded by unordinary experts and by being trained by them in time he becomes a "monster" himself.

Village elders all have their own pasts and story's, that make them somewhat interesting.

... more>> MCs past is only thing that reels your interest in, as you are kept mostly in dark.

But on side note... even if novel has interesting aspects it is being held back by battles with 10 word moves one after another that sound weird when translated from Chinese. Buddha, devil, god blah blah blah. And MC becoming OP, kind of omniscient out of blue. Like yea best teachers can impart part of their knowledge, but 12-15 y/o know it all... eh.

p.s. not the worst novel out there, but nothing mind blowing. <<less
