For me, acting in everyday life was a calling.

Since the synopsis is useless, here's a summary:

The protagonist has a tragic past which seems to have caused him to have severe depression (failed su*cide attempts are mentioned, but also that he didn't actually use highly lethal methods). His daily life is filled with acting out the role of a functional adult even though his actual emotions are negative and he lost his purpose.

He dies and regresses to his high school days with his memory intact, but also switches genders. While his family is intact again in the past, he... more>> has not forgotten his misery and now has to act both cheerfully for the sake of his family, and like a normal girl which is unfamiliar to him.

The plot covers entering the drama club like he did in his previous life and becoming and actress instead of giving up on that dream like he did previously.

It's obviously not translated very far yet but that also means that I can write this much without spoiling the story. Now to the actual review:

I think the story is written pretty well overall, although I think the adjustment from switching genders is understated. If it was told from an outside perspective and he was just that skilled at hiding himself that would be one thing, but for a story told from his perspective, it makes little sense for him to not just act outwardly like a girl but to have almost no inward points of friction either.

I'm not convinced that his past as a man was actually necessary for the story up to that point, other than to gather readers, I suppose. The only point that stands out is that he now has a different relationship with the guy who used to be his best friend in the previous life.

But regarding the other aspects, it's written in an interesting way. One of the things I like in particular is that some of the acting and character analyses are covered in detail rather than just telling the reader that the protagonist acts well. It's a story about acting, so acting should be an active part of it and not just something that happens passively. That aspect is handled well.

It's also not a one-man-show. There are several relevant characters that don't follow superficial archetypes, but are still somewhat unique and interesting. The dialogue isn't slapstick comedy, but there's enough humour to keep it entertaining.

It invokes the desire to not just follow the main character's story but also the others, and see how they develop and how her actions change their fate from the memories of the previous life.

The theme is more serious than many of the other novels I'm reading here but it's still a positive story overall, with a focus on cherishing family and youth while they're still around, and preserving them if possible.

It's missing a bit of a spark that I can't quite describe for me to immediately place it among my all-time favourites, but it's certainly one of the better acting / entertainment related novels that I've read, and it's still far above the threshold to rate it 5 stars. <<less
