Xie Tao got a boyfriend.

They have never met.

He would send her many things, snacks she had never eaten before, expensive-looking gold and silver jewelry, wine brewed from the first snow, tea boiled with plum blossom dew, and books of strange tales she had never read.

She could imagine what his life must be like, as poetic and picturesque as an ancient painting.

Because of him, Xie Tao’s life fundamentally changed. She no longer had to work several jobs because he didn’t allow it.

Her life was no longer strained because he always sent her real gold and silver.

But she didn’t know that every WeChat message she sent him was transformed into a sealed letter and sent to another time and space.

There, it was a chaotic era of changing dynasties.

The man she fell in love with was the most stunning blank space in this world.

One day, Xie Tao mustered the courage to video call her boyfriend.

???

My boyfriend is so handsome, wah wah wah!

His eyes are so beautiful! His eyelashes are so long! His skin is so fair!

But wait? Why is he wearing ancient robes and sporting an ancient hairstyle?!

At that moment, the young nobleman in her phone screen, dressed in bright brocade, wearing a gold crown and jade belt, with long, dark hair, had eyes like amber and a gentle smile, calling her “Tao Tao.”

A Short, Sweet and Unique Romance

Featuring a kind-hearted modern girl and a powerful national teacher from ancient times, it's perfect for light-hearted reading with no major angst or big conflicts. The dual perspective of both leads enriches the story, highlighting their different outlooks and motives.

Summary:

Spoiler

A lonely girl in a small town accidentally drops her phone, leading to a mysterious new contact she can't erase. When she's called back to the city to visit her sick best friend, she's hesitant due to the bad memories and the presence of her abusive mother. However, she decides to face her fears for the sake of her friend who had always protected her during difficult times.

Upon her return, she discovers her friend has attempted su*cide and is suffering from depression, refusing to communicate. Suspecting bullying, she rents a place to live and enrolls in her friend’s school to uncover the truth and help her heal. As life grows more stressful, she confides in the mysterious contact, who, despite being curt and boring, offers valuable advice on being strategic and brave to achieve her goals.

As their connection deepens, the phone activates new functions, enabling them to exchange gifts, sometimes accidentally. Daily communication fosters admiration, and she begins to develop feelings for him. Though initially too cold and suspicious to reciprocate, he refrains from rejecting her, driven by a desire to uncover the secret behind their mysterious connection, which he believes to be part of an enemy plot to kill him.

After a series of inexplicable accidents, encounters with metaphysical masters, and the theft of her phone, they lose contact for a while. Upon regaining it, she realizes how little she knows about him and that she has always been the one to initiate contact. Offering to remain friends if he doesn’t share her feelings, she’s surprised when he admits he has grown fond of her and their conversations, which have become the most relaxing part of his days.

As a real couple, they support each other as he navigates political schemes and she delves deeper into the metaphysical world to protect herself and find a way to meet him in person, despite living in different worlds. Together, they face their challenges, building a unique and heartwarming relationship.

What I liked the most:

  • Healthy Relationship Dynamics: Despite ML's calculating nature and focus on revenge, his relationship with FL remains pure and healthy. He never harms her or unjustly takes her as an enemy.
  • Hardworking, Resilient FL: Despite her unfortunate past—abandoned by her father, ab*sed by her mentally ill mother, and bullied and isolated when her mother remarried—she bravely ran away from the toxic environment. Determined to forge a better life, she worked part-time jobs to support herself and pay her school fees. She's optimistic, loyal, and considerate, yet she knows when to draw the line and won't put up with mistreatment.
  • Mutual Respect: The characters respect and consider each other's lives and goals
    Spoiler

choosing not to abandon their worlds for one another but rather to share moments together when possible.

  • Engaging Plot: The story effectively balances romance with intriguing metaphysical elements, creating an unique narrative.
This novel is recommended for readers seeking a sweet, engaging romance with a touch of metaphysical mystery. <<less

I cried a few times reading this novel. I have a really sensitive heart when it comes to familial love and in this case it's between mother and daughter. I don't necessarily relate to FL's experiences but reading her feelings and the complexity hurt me as well.

Anyway, I love it. I find the whole thing stress free for me, didn't frustrate me and instead touched me so that's all that matters to me.

I loved this story a lot. I skipped some chunks of it towards the end when the main conflict was settled, but I love their rs and how MC was determined to face her past to save her friend. I felt that her background of not having the best family felt realistic and relatable. As a child from a broken home, I do understand where MC is coming from and that made her stand out from other MCs.

My true rating for this is 4 stars. I would give it 5... more>> if they had more conflicts for MC to grow. But at the same time they want MC to be the pure girl who heals ML. I think that's why they didn't put her through more emotional turmoil. In a way, it's nice that she gets to be cared for and can just focus on school, after all the trauma she had already endured.

Worth a read imo! Translators did a great job too ☺️💓 <<less

Honestly, here, we can't really trust the ratings. Some novels with lower ratings can be way better than some novels with higher ratings. For this novel, I think it deserves a better rating. At least 4.3 overall.

The delivery is great, the premise is interesting, and most importantly, it flows naturally and not forced. Since it feels natural, it's also of course, not cringe. Because seriously, lately, I found so many novels that have high ratings with writings that caused my toes to curl. 😂 So I really appreciate this novel.

Review from the translator:

Imagine sending a flirty WeChat message to your boyfriend, only to discover he’s not just in another city—he’s in another century. This story combines modern-day charm with historical intrigue, all while navigating the complexities of love that transcends both time and logic.

Snacks, Letters, and... Time Travel?

Xie Tao’s boyfriend is the dream package: thoughtful, romantic, and ridiculously generous. He sends her luxurious gifts—everything from plum blossom dew tea to first-snow wine—but they’ve never met. So when Xie Tao musters the courage to video call him, she’s greeted... more>> not by a familiar face but by an ethereal nobleman from ancient times.

Plot Analysis:

The story unfolds with Xie Tao, a struggling young woman who’s swept into a surreal romance with Wei Yun, a mysterious figure from another era. As their correspondence deepens, so does the intrigue: how are their worlds connected? What role does the copper pendant play in bridging the gap between them? The narrative balances lighthearted moments with poignant explorations of loneliness, identity, and longing.

While the concept is fresh and engaging, the pacing occasionally stumbles. The modern and historical timelines sometimes feel uneven, with the historical segments begging for more detail. However, the charm of the characters keeps you invested.

Main Characters:

  • Xie Tao: Relatable, plucky, and endearingly awkward, Xie Tao is the everywoman thrust into an extraordinary situation. Her journey from skepticism to vulnerability is both heartfelt and entertaining.
  • Wei Yun: Picture an ancient strategist with devastating good looks and a dry sense of humor. Wei Yun is equal parts brooding and charming, a man burdened by his era’s chaos yet captivated by Xie Tao’s modern quirks.
Themes:

At its core, the novel examines connection in an increasingly disconnected world. It questions the boundaries of love—can it flourish without physical presence? And what happens when it’s challenged by time itself? The interplay of ancient and modern cultures adds depth, exploring how relationships are shaped by context yet driven by universal emotions.

Emotional Impact:

This is a story that sneaks up on you. One moment, you’re laughing at Xie Tao’s flustered reaction to Wei Yun’s formal address; the next, you’re tearing up as they navigate the barriers keeping them apart. The emotional highs and lows are beautifully balanced, making the story resonate on a personal level.

Final Thoughts:

This novel is a heartwarming journey that reminds us love knows no boundaries—not even the constraints of time. While it has its flaws, its emotional depth make it a memorable read. If you’re a fan of romances with unconventional twists, this book is a must-read. It’s perfect for those who enjoy character-driven stories, a touch of magical realism, and the kind of banter that makes you smile. Just don’t be surprised if you start wishing for a time-traveling boyfriend of your own. <<less

Loved it.

This is a love story. So it focuses on the romance. I feel like the protagonists love developed beautifully. It wasn't instantaneous, it was quick but it wasn't rushed, a lot of things happened very fast but the romantic parts were detailed.

I liked both protagonists, I loved that both were true to themselves even as they fell in love with each other. And I love all the other pairings. Even if some were left to our imagination and others were resolved in the extras, I still found them cute... more>> and endearing.

The translations were really good. And I particularly enjoyed the site, I like the color pink a lot. That was a great bonus for me. <<less
