The Cannon Fodder Turns His Sister Into A Soaring Phoenix

When I opened my eyes, I realized I had been reincarnated into a cultivation game. But not as some heaven-defying protagonist, nor even a notable side character. No, I became a nameless NPC with tr*sh-tier spirit roots—doomed to die at the age of fifteen at the hands of a minor villain.

My name is Ye Anping. And yes, I was despairing.

Fortunately, it wasn’t all hopeless.

At least… I was only four years old.

Even better, I had a junior sister—an ordinary NPC according to the game lore—who was actually blessed with peerless talent. A natural genius who could make the heavens weep.

Ten years passed in the blink of an eye.

My junior sister grew up. She became strong. Beautiful. Radiant, like the moon hanging high above the mortal world.

And then, the protagonist noticed her.

And then… my junior sister push me down to the bed!?

Ye Anping: “Junior Sister, I’m your senior brother, I—!”

(Spoiler: it didn’t matter.)

I turned my brain off to enjoy this novel. I recommended future readers to do the same. I can't be bothered to remember their names, so I'll just keep calling them by their stereotypes.

There's no logical reason for the sister to have romantic feelings for the young master. They grew up together, saw each other naked, and he trained her in brutal techniques. She should hate his guts.

The other female character who's the "protagonist" of the original story is infatuated with the sister. I can't really say whether she will... more>> become more interesting or not.

The young master was planning for 10 years just to stop his death flag. Now that he completed it, he plans to marry someone. It's not explicitly mentioned, so I guess the author plans to have more romance shenanigans. <<less

You know, I didn’t expect much when I first picked this up. After all, it’s a xuanhuan. That usually means bracing myself for another round of young masters foaming at the mouth over the protagonist's girl, sect elders with more pettiness than high school rivals, and the ever-inevitable face-slapping festival.

But this story... surprised me. No, shocked me.

There are no arrogant heirs constantly harassing the MC just because. No unreasonable clan leaders itching to pick a fight. No forced “once-in-a-thousand-years” miracle encounters happening every other chapter. And the side characters? They’re... more>> not cardboard cutouts who hate the protagonist just for being a “nobody from a humble sect.” Honestly, it feels more like a cozy slice-of-life with some cultivation flavor sprinkled in than your typical “heaven-defying road to immortality” saga.

Most of the characters are... normal. In a good way. They're kind, decent, and even supportive. That means the action takes a bit of a backseat—but thanks to the comedic tone and the top-tier writing from both the author and translator, it never feels dull. In fact, it's insanely entertaining.

As for Pei Lengxue’s affection toward Ye Anping, it actually makes sense. He didn’t just throw her into brutal training and watch from the sidelines—he was right there beside her every step of the way. He took care of her when she was sick, raised her, and gave her access to all kinds of precious medicines and cultivation treasures. It's not romance out of nowhere—it’s earned.

So yeah, if you're tired of the usual xuanhuan tropes and want something refreshing, funny, and heartwarming, give this one a shot. It’s a hidden gem. <<less

Enjoyable. Deserving of maybe 4.2/5.0. Read to chapter 10 before deciding to drop, ch1-9 have much worse quality and seems to be a rushed introduction to the story.

Unfortunately the story is homophobic towards the canonically and proudly lesbian original protag "Feng Yudie, " and the story makes the MC "smarter" by dumbing down the villains. Otherwise, the story's fairly good in terms of worldbuilding and plot, but suffers in character building quality.

There's a lot to like about this story. It really can be a lot of fun. Unfortunately, it is staunchly homophobic and chauvinistic. The original protagonist is unambivalently and proudly gay, and is constantly derided for it as people frequently talk about "fixing" her and the author treats her almost entirely as a joke character. And all of the female cast are made dumber than even the villains to make the male MC look better and explain why they all dance like puppets on his strings while (with the exception... more>> of the original protagonist) trying to figure out how to get in his pants.

If you liked Ending Maker, then there's a decent chance you'll like this, but I honestly don't know if I can recommend it <<less

It’s alright. Noticing some too well or too bad. The MC is smart enough to come up with good plans for his sister and enemies. He doesn’t even hesitate to use powerful sects or the protagonist character for his aims. The obly problem is most of the smarts in the novel went to him. The protagonist character is an idiot who’s obsessed with the MC’s sister who is in turn an idiot obsessed with the MC, who also happens to be her step brother. Their hijinks with other characters can... more>> go from amusing to boring depending on the chapter. <<less

I've been trying to figure out what about this novel that had me so enthralled by it. The romance is absolute dogshit, if you can even call it that. It's practically nonexistent. The intro for this novel was pretty damn rough but it set in stone exactly how the main character would be. He's pragmatic, and self-absorbed but one of the more down-to-earth protagonists I've seen in a long time. Seriously ... more>>
Spoiler

There are numerous times where he calls out the girls for having too low of an opinion of themselves for falling for him so easily and just smoothly turns them down before they even have an opportunity to confess to him.

I wouldn't say this an absolutely amazing book but for a Chinese Wuxia novel, this honestly might be one of the best starts I've read. Hoping it continue to remain that way. <<less

Great read in my opinion.

I'm by no means a medium veteran, but this was the first Chinese novel to really hook me in.

What I've loved about this one is attention to characters. I can recognize all of them and imagine what they would have done in a given situation, that's a mark of great quality in my opinion. All these colourful personalities shine brightest when clashing with each other.

The plot was also pretty good, it gets more serious in the later half, and although you can notice the between arc's... more>> slowdown, the pace is fast enough for you not to lose the momentum.

To me the comedy is executed quite well. Managed to make me laugh quite a few times, without bogging down the plot progression.

I wholeheartedly recommend to give this one a try, even if you are not super into xianxia, since it's such a fun ride. <<less

First of all I couldn't find a complete chinese language novel of this so I couldn't finish reading it completely by using google translator. Regretfully, I have to wait for the English translations (currently 388 chapters are available at the time of writing this review) to continue reading further.

The story somewhat follows the title, the MC isn't some hidden op character; you can tell that his sister (sister-disciple) is definitely stronger than him and hence following the tag line 'turning sister into a soaring phoenix'.

The concept is somewhat similar to... more>> the novel 'Ending Maker' where the protagonist enters the game and knows about the game story and hence it's his cheat. The MC in this novel also uses his knowledge from the game to interfere in the upcoming events and reap benefits.

The relationship between the MC and the heroines is well portrayed, though it is also used at some places in the story as a leverage, where the author struggled with 'how to progress the story from here', so he used some forced romance to push through the blockade, which isn't fun to read. But well, it's only done in some small places so does not affect your overall mood while reading the novel. <<less

No complaints, a solid novel. Pretty much focused soley on romance/harem.

Lacks anything deserving higher than a 3/5.

Pacing is slow, romance is slow, fights aren't anything special and neither is the power systems. Good but there is better stuff out there.

Pretty entertaining novel, it's currently done a good job separating the protag/Mob dynamic, humorous and the characters are likable rather quickly. Feels a bit on the nose sometimes and I worry it's going to step into the OP Harem chad protag trope. There is the prerequisite that you don't need but would do to understand, cultivation Chinese mystical rank system. It's not going to ruin your read if you don't know about it, but you could get confused potentially.
