One day, Li Yu transmigrated into a fish. Furthermore, this fish even had a master. This master was the sinister and terrifying, mute tyrant from a novel. The system gave Li Yu a task. If he wanted to change back into a human, he had to obtain the tyrant’s heart.

Li Yu full of tears: System, please wake up. I’m only a fish. He can’t even speak. How can we interact?

System: Stop jabbering. To take down the tyrant, you must attack his heart.

Li Yu: Can I ask, does the tyrant have a heart–

Li Yu did his best to blow bubbles at the tyrant, but ended up being captured by the tyrant and raised carefully in a huge, ginormous…… fish tank. The life of a fish was filled with all sorts of blessings.

Everyday, Mu Tianchi watched the little carp swim around happily, pondering when this fish would finally transform into a human.

The little carp didn’t know. It’s not that the tyrant had no heart, it’s just that he already gave it away to the little carp that accidentally saved his life.

Read this during pre-finals time to give myself a mental break and really enjoyed it, I basically couldn't stop reading for 3 days straight. Extremely cute and comedic with a really silly premise! The MC can become human after ~20 or so chapters, and starts having frequent interactions with the ML in human form by chapter 40-ish (quarter of the book). The plot is very romance first and soap-opera/dog blood levels of drama imperial family plot second. The plot has some holes and inconsistencies, but they don't really affect the... more>> experience. Don't take the novel too seriously, it's meant to be a fun time! <<less

Very good, low-stakes read! There's nothing too dangerous and/or scary, which is nice. This novel is like if you're on the Lazy River-type of ride with a couple short waterfalls to be pushed off of.

On the writing itself, I think it's fine! Plot points and random "one-off" things actually tie up very nicely. I wasn't left with many questions after reading other than a hope of a continuation of some sort. Cheers!

Good but slow at times. MC, Li Yu, is an ordinary human just trying to survive after transmigrating into a fish. While honestly doing missions assigned by the system, the relationship between MC and ML, Mu Tianchi, gets misunderstood by ML. This leads the system to redefine MC's and ML's relationship and change the goals of subsequent missions... leading to a happy ending for the couple.

This spoiler is about the hidden intrigue.

Spoiler

MC knows the plot of the original novel. He uses this knowledge to protect ML. However, there is a deeper conspiracy that wasn't uncovered in the original novel.

ML wasn't mute due to his genes. His mother, the late empress, was poisoned while she was pregnant and this led to his mutism. The empress and ML's fourth brother were both mu*dered.

The mu*derer is actually the 6th prince's mother. She wasn't his real mother and her identity was fake. She was originally a foreign princess who married the emperor many years ago. She tried to assassinate him but failed and was suppose to die. However, she killed the empress' maid and took over her identity. Then she schemed her way back into the role of concubine. She wanted to make the emperor suffer for conquering her country.

Of note: My rating isn't higher because I didn't feel emotionally invested in the MC and ML. So the feel of the novel had a bland flavor. <<less

MC gets reborn as fish. I don't know who wouldn't want to read this crack.

Alright, so I came into the story expecting it to have a very simple plot, with most of it being fluff and humor. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there is some court politics involved. In fact the court politics go hand in hand with the romance and relationship development of our odd couple, and even after they got together the author managed to write in a few more interesting plotlines before ending it.

I love... more>> scheming protagonists, and this one truly have pulled off some insane stunts (especially when he's in fish form), but MC can also be quite childish and impulsive, particularly during the mpreg arc.. Felt like his character derailed from there, and became less consistent.

ML checks off the desirable traits of a typical danmei gong. No complaints about him. His muteness actually adds to his character; people around him would make assumptions about him because of his silence and it's hilarious.

There is a lack of chemistry between the leads, however can't deny that they're both devoted to each other and would do whatever it takes to protect the other. ML is especially very patient and gentle with MC, since it took some time for the MC to come to terms with his feelings. Once they're both committed though, it's just a constant honeymoon phase until the end.

Spoiler

The baos!!! This is the first danmei where I got seriously attached to the kids. Their antics are so funny and adorable, and I love how effortlessly they managed to charm everyone, especially the Emperor lmao

One of my absolute favourites! This is one of the very very few stories I've actually reread over the years, instead of just enjoying once. The translation is smooth and the story an excellent combination of comedy/light-heartedness and drama/angst. I think this novel is actually on the level of stories like Erha and other "classics" of the genre, but sadly doesn't have that level of fame probably because of it's "silly" premise, and the fact that it doesn't deal with more typical heavy tropes or conventionally "complex" settings like fights... more>> for the throne or against the Heavenly Dao. But it's very much worth it! In fact, precisely because it's a bit unique, it's kind of refreshing imo.

Not to mention how healthy and sweet the relationship is! The ML is menacing and powerful without forcing the MC into s*x or a relationship, ever, which can't be said for a lot of danmei novels. And the love is completely reciprocated by the MC! It's not your typical "I'm, not really gay but since I've been transmigrated here with no way back and you're the most powerful character in the story I can't say no, so fine I'll be with you but I'm gonna be very reluctant about all this until the last part of the story". Nono, these two are equally smitten with each other. <<less

Honestly was really disappointed in this one. I had high hopes with the good ratings and its licensing, but after finishing my strongest feeling was that I wasted my time reading it.

I'm too irritated to get into all the problems I had with it in general, but at the end I still didn't actually care about a single character, the story was full of hand-wavy dropped plots and suspension of disbelief (unrelated to the setting, just like... irritating to have the author keep expecting us to 'just go with it'... more>> on truly dumb items). 'Evil' people are presented as always being evil, even if given a chance not to be, and all getting their just deserts.

I'm going to stop there. If you're fine with hand-wavy and all that you may like it. If you want fantasy danmei that actually feels like its author had a clue about the world and story they were building, go elsewhere. <<less

A sweet and light-hearted story. I really enjoyed the MC and ML's relationship, the way they respect and care for each other is very heartwarming. The ML is protective and doting, but he also trusts the MC to know what he is doing. It's quite refreshing to have an ML that loves the MC a lot without being so overbearing.

While there was some typical palace drama and intrigue going on in the background, the MC and ML never really faced any big issues with their relationship. I feel like it... more>> would have been nice to see them struggle a bit more at least in the beginning of their relationship, but overall I am still satisfied with the story.

If you want a deep and heavy story, then this isn't for you. If you want a fun and fluffy story to read, then you'll enjoy this. <<less

It's an entertaining read. Fish and ML have such a cute bonding that I just ahhh love it.

But the novelty of it quickly wears down and I can't continue it. As many readers have pointed out this is an excellent read for mindless fluff. There is no action and no interesting palace drama which is something I love to read so I guess I may come back to read this when I am in need of some fluff.

Translation is amazing!

Obviously not a novel to be taken in a serious/deep manner. Even the serious high tension parts are undercut with a layer of ridiculous-ness, and that for me was what made this novel so fun to read.

Like when MC in fish form slapped the woman early on and took revenge

[collapse]

Both obviously OP leads, and obviously the missions are cliche tropes that just further progress the romance and is essentially quite fan-service-y; but I enjoyed it every step of the way.

Other than the lack of explanation for the system, everything was tied up quite nicely. When I thought the novel would end, they added another twist, another prince to take down, another ‘tribulation’ for them to easily overcome but it felt so fun along the way to see how a fish MC and a mute prince solved the problems in an unconventional (cause he’s a fish yo) way.

The fluff is very fluffy and enjoyable, and the dog food was very happily eaten. The babies (didn’t notice the tag but saw the ‘raising babies’ mission early on and was like okkkk it’s gonna come) were too cute & well-behaved to be non-fictional babies. For once, emperor father in law isn’t an as*hole standing in their way.

If anything, I wish the reason why ML fell for MC or even why he started keeping the fish was clearer. It’s kind of explained in the random mission that ended up being very vital but eh.

Overall, really enjoyed this random intriguing novel that kept me invested and engaged with its funny nonsense and heartwarming fluff. No tears or heart tickling but a lot of smiles while reading.

Already looking forward to the re-read! :) <<less

I just have this urge to write this comment the moment I'm done reading the novel. Before reading this novel, I read a few review here saying that this novel is poorly written and the plot is so childish. However after I read the whole things, I just think that the review didn't do justice to the whole stories.

Didn't expect I enjoy this so much. The way I was always anxious the moment Li Yu trying to do something in his fish form, or when he's close to transforming. The... more>> palace power struggle plot is decent, and I didn't expect the plot twist.

For me, this one is a very refreshing historical novel, where I didn't need too think too hard, but it's not pure fluff. <<less

No need for any criticisms. Just want to rate it as 555/5. Love the story, no unnecessary misunderstanding. All characters have personality of their own. And our protagonists is not perfect at all which makes them perfectly imperfect, especially MC. I really like him 'cause of the character development.

Might be long chapters but not boring at all because there's comedy, mystery, and twists up to the very end.

Cute, adorable, beautiful and charming story. I can't believe I enjoyed more than 100 chapters about a fish as much as I did.

I'd tried many times to read it, but somehow I never thought it would draw me in and, oh boy, when I finally started there was no force that would make me do anything else other than reading this. A year after finishing the story I am still amazed by how good it is. Definitely recommend!

Normally, I'd be frustrated by the villain's all sharing a single brain cell and passing it around like the Moirai and their eyeball, but the MC and ML were simply too cute. The series didn't seem to take itself too seriously and imo, the author clearly didn't want to put her adorable MC in too much danger throughout. The plot device babies are also very cute. I only subtracted a star because we don't get to see more of them growing up into more than just a plot device.

This is really fun to read, unless you're looking for realistic situations, turn around cause this isn't it 😅. There were times where MC frustrated me with his innocence and naivety, but then I remember that MC has just turned 18. When I look back to when I was 18, 🤔the character just felt right. Really didn't expect the sudden (to me) mpreg but that's my fault for not reading the tags. Relationship of tyrant and fish is very cute and OP as usual. 🤷‍♀️😁

I love this novel so much! It's definitely cute and fluffy but the thing I like about this the most is how much common sense the protagonists have. Most of the time, I'm left frustrated over how oblivious the characters are even though they are supposed to be 'smart'. But here, the MC is supposed to be kinda dumb, and he is, but he still has a brain. What we as readers can guess, he can too. Not all of his actions are perfect, but he still acts like an... more>> intelligent being.

The story is hilarious yet intriguing. It seems cliche at first and it's not anything innovative but it has many twists and turns that are surprising yet not completely out of left field. If I had to, I'd compare the plot progression writing to 'Everyone else is a returnee' which I also love.

I will admit, the system and missions part is not that great. It's... weird, but it doesn't really affect the novel on the whole.

Overall, this is an amazing story, you can read it with your brain turned off or you can invest yourself into it, it'll be entertaining both ways. <<less

If you don't take it too seriously, it's a silly fun story to read. It reminds me of all those stories when a human saves an animal, and they return in human form to repay the favour (often in marriage xD) So far I'm enjoying it, and seeing whereas it'll go.

I really enjoyed this novel - it was delightful! The main draw is definitely the relationship between Li Yu and Mu Tianchi. It's just an all-round fun and fluffy story and I appreciate how devoted the two leads are to each other.

Overall, I give it 3.5/5 stars - for a couple of reasons. The main one, at least for me, is that I don't think the parts of the novel's plot separate from the main CP's relationship (that is, all of the infighting between the princes) were quite solid enough... more>> to really carry the story after the narrative tension of when MTC would learn LY's identity (and later, when LY would learn that he knew) were resolved. As a result, I found a few sections in the latter half of the novel a little slow. Due to Li Yu's meta knowledge of the novel, they're almost always one step ahead of the other princes and there is never a real sense of danger or tension. I did, however, very much appreciate how solid LY and MTC's relationship was. After they'd gotten together, there was very little fighting or trying to separate them for the sake of unnecessary drama.

Secondly, I was a little uncomfortable with some of the stuff surrounding Chu Yanyu, and the casual descriptions of corporal punishment, but this is more a product of the genre than anything specific to this novel.

Thirdly,
Spoiler

I didn't like that the novel's final enemy turned out to be the last survivor's of an exterminated nation. Although their actions paint them as the villains, the whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth. This plot was just there as a backdrop to the main leads' relationship, so it's easy enough to ignore, but... ultimately, I didn't like the Emperor very much.

I was also kind of bummed they went down the route of "curing" MTC's disability, but it does get points for not simply making him suddenly be able to speak and having that be the end of it. The fact that he has to take time learning to speak from scratch, and the fact that his voice still isn't quite the same as someone who didn't grow up mute, felt like a more realistic portrayal of the realities of learning to speak for the first time as an adult.

[collapse]

I was very pleasantly surprised by the final little plot of
Spoiler

Li Yu starting up a women's support network for the widows. Even though this plot did kind of come out of nowhere, I liked the way they went about it. A lot of stories which feature a modern person trying to impart modern feminist ideas onto women in the past feel a bit... sanctimonious, like the only reason these women are in their predicament is because they don't try hard enough to change it. It's a saviour complex. However, this story didn't go down that route. Li Yu gets an idea to help a woman in need, and puts forth his idea to do so. It's another woman who suggests to him that simply helping her at an individual level won't really change her situation because she'll still be socially ostracised and will have given up the safety and security of her widow status. Li Yu takes this on board and finds out what Liang-shi actually wants. When she turns down his help, he trusts that she knows her situation better than he does and doesn't judge her for her refusal - however, he still resolves to change society for the better and set up a support network for other women like her, and once he's used his position of privilege to do this, he allows it to be run by other women of this era who understand their individual needs better than he does. Overall, this plot felt a little on-the-nose, but I still really enjoyed it.

[collapse]

Other than this, I really loved the side pairing of the Jinjue Princess and Ye Qinghuan. I liked that our CP had solid friendships outside of their relationship to each other. Wang Xi also deserves an honourable mention, as well as our lovely Baos. Li Yu was a good protagonist and his POV was immensely enjoyable to read. He's naive, but very cute and I like a virtuous MC.

Overall, this is a sweet, relationship-driven story. I'd recommend it for anyone looking for a lighthearted break from some of the more serious, angsty danmei novels. I loved the ending.

Thanks so much to the translators! <<less
