Everyone says “like father, like son”, but Gu Fuyou has mediocre talent. So mediocre that when people see her, they mock her, wondering how Gu Wanpeng could have such a daughter.

She was so ordinary until she was accepted into the Xuan Miao Sect, with some suspecting that Gu Wanpeng pulled strings for her behind the scenes.

During a beast-taming class, the master was teaching disciples how to summon spirit beasts.

Someone, trying to mock her, chuckled, “I’ve heard your father’s golden spirit bird can attain the nascent soul stage. Like father, like daughter, right? I bet the spirit beast you summon will be equally impressive.”

She started the summoning formation, but there was no movement for a long time.

Everyone laughed, “She can’t even summon the lowest-level young beast.” This was beyond mediocrity; it was downright useless.

Suddenly, the formation emitted a blinding light, and fog covered the ground. Everyone gasped in surprise.

She summoned something, not a bird or beast, but a living person.

This person was the unparalleled genius of Xuan Miao Sect.

Even she didn’t expect it, and the summoned person looked equally bewildered.

In a sudden impulse, she used her ring finger’s blood to mark the person’s forehead and named her ‘Nanzhu Jun’.

The master intervened, shouting, “Stop, she’s your senior sister!”

But it was too late; they had already formed a pact.

Just finished reading this and I'm still in awe with how amazing of a ride this was.

I thought it was a bit slow to pick up at the start because it all felt like fun and fluff, but once the serious stuff started, I couldn't put it down.

The angst, the pain, the love, the joy, you feel them with the characters. The way the author describes them just clutches your heart and takes a hold of it.

And absolutely loved the way things/actions are described in this book. It feels real... more>> and magical, like you're witnessing it in person.

This definitely could've been stretched a bit more to develop the revenge taking part more in details, but the amount of chapters allocated is also perfect.

10/10 a must read. Not only for the gl, but it's a great story. I wish somebody will pick this up for a TV show. The fight/action parts will makes for some epic scenes. <<less

MC is too emotional to the point of ruining her life due to resentment and hate. FL was really insensitive and a hypocrite talking about giving justice to MC annihilated clan but, wanting to save the "innocent". And emotionally unstable MC was left confused of what to do, can you imagine been so gullible?

MC never learned to take responsibility of her actions or to dominate emotions, even when facing the unnecessarily added second enemy she had to be rescue by FL who almost died again. Really useless to be reborn... more>> and not to learn anything. <<less

Finished this a few days ago and here are my thoughts:

I think I would give it a 7/10, it was definitely a very enjoyable read for me and there were many positive points. But at the end of the day, I wouldn’t call it a personal favorite due to some parts where it fell through a bit.

The world building in this novel was amazing, every time I opened it for a read, it felt like I just walked through a door into a completely new world. With it being a... more>> xianxia novel, there were many magical concepts unique to their world, but they were described in meticulous detail, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the settings of our main characters which brings me to my next point.

I absolutely adored the relationship between the main leads and I also each character on its own, especially Gu Fuyou the MC. She grew up with a lack of cultivation talent but my favorite quality of her was that despite her lack of innate talent, she always stood up for herself against bullying from others, she continued to fight for herself and she made up for it with other hard earned skills. For example, her passion of formations and how she made it a life long project for herself. The main leads have polar opposite personalities but they both change each other for the better and balance each other really well.

Overall, I could tell that the author took the time to plan out the plot and how all the puzzle pieces would connect. I also really enjoyed the foreshadowing sprinkled all over the novel especially the exposition chapters so that when major revelations happened later on, it never felt as if random plot points were thrust at the reader just for shock value. There was a strong foundation built early on that would give you a sense of satisfaction when you get to the final revelation.

Despite all my praises, there are two reasons this novel didn’t go in my favorites list. First, I felt that the romance was barely ever there or maybe you could say it was very slow-burn. See, I usually don’t mind slow burn and sometimes even enjoy it depending on the writing, but here it felt like barely any romantic developments happened throughout the novel and most of the romance was squished together towards the end.

There were simply too many missed opportunities to develop side characters that would have made the story so much more nuanced and impeccable. The author introduced so many interesting characters but we barely ever got to learn about their backgrounds and it felt as if they were just there for the main leads’ use. I would say even the fl’s development felt a bit lackluster compared to the mc’s.

Spoiler

For example, in those 700 years that Gu Fuyou was not around, I would loved to read a few chapters from Zhong Michu’s pov. How did she cope with GF’s death, all the years she spent cultivating and taking revenge on some of the people involved in her sect’s death, how she raised Yi’er and Ah Fu. All of that would have helped the readers connect to her yearning and longing for GF even more. Even besides that, I wanted to know Scholar Zhai’s story and her background, some of the ens*aved people especially Feng Sui since they specifically emphasized him as an ambitious strong man despite being branded with the s*avery curse. And just so many more characters that had interesting expositions but were never fully fleshed out.

Another big one was GF’s friend/brother’s fiance (forgot her name). She literally got her tongue cut out, witnessed the love of her life committed su*cide in front of her, spent 700 years without any loved ones around except for ZM keeping in contact with her. It would have been so nice to see her journey during those 700 years and how she established herself as a doctor etc. Of course, I am not asking for chapters upon chapters dedicated to these characters but they had very strong premises and I think there was definitely some lost potential there. Overall, that entire 700 years time period could have a few chapters of its own before jumping right into GF’s reincarnation.

[collapse]

And one last thing that made me a bit uncomfortable was...

Spoiler

how the s*aves were handled in the novel. Most of the time, they were just described as “the s*aves did this” or “the s*aves did that” which made them sound like one-body ? and felt a bit dehumanizing to me. But also, that might be something that got lost in the translation so I tried not to dwell too much on that.

[collapse]

I think most of the issues I had with this novel could have been solved if the novel was a bit longer. But alas, that’s the author’s decision so that’s that. Despite some of my grievances, I would still recommend this to others mainly due to the high translation quality and storywriting as well. But if you are looking for a more romance centered story, you might not have a fun time with this. <<less

Even if you don't typically enjoy cultivation novels, you should give this one a shot! I usually struggle with cultivation novels because they can sometimes be too focused on the cultivation aspect.

However, this one has the right rhythm. The plot and angst are well-balanced, keeping you interested until the very end.

This novel has enough to occupy a small part of your heart because I still remember the plot vividly, even though I read it a long time ago.

Other reviews already detail the story, so I'll skip that part. If you're... more>> reading this, consider this as another comment reinforcing that it's an amazing novel you should pick up. <<less

This was good.

It was great for the first volume, however the second and third volumes leave a bit to be desired as it felt like the author moved too quickly and forgot about characters they had invested in earlier. Some of the payoffs from major events also come and go too quickly in the later volumes.

That said, I don’t usually get emotional when reading books like these but this one holds some real emotional sway. I highly recommend reading it.

There are so many things I can say about jian long, but I'll try and keep it short:

Jian long is separated into three volumes in publication, and they follow three different arcs in the novel. The first arc is when our mains meet each other, Gu Fuyou (mc) and Zhong Michu (fl). This is when these two girls get accustomed to each other and when you can say originally and firstly fell for each other. Then it follows into tragedy, with sect annihilation and genocide.

In the next vol/arc, we have... more>> revenge. Whether or not that revenge was justified is up to the Heavens in the novel, as Gu Fuyou begins to take things down a different and darker path that begins to blur the line between being different from her oppressors. But Zhong Michu stays with her along every step of the way.

The last section of the novel consists of the aftermath of the revenge and the pairing officializing their love for each other. Though there still is some struggle, angst, and fighting, it is not nearly as much as the previous section.

Our main character, Gu Fuyou, isn't inherently a good person. She even refers to herself as evil. And deep down, she is. Gu Fuyou is a twisted soul, but it cannot be blamed on her but on the people who wronged her.

Now, I hate the stories that always have that "Oh, only she can pull her back from snapping" or "only she can make her feel okay again" and because of just a touch, the other is okay like it's some special power or something. This novel has that but it's a different vibe of "if she is not okay, I will kill everyone in this world" and I think that's beautiful. Her presence of being there heals her not because they're soulmates or anything, but it's because she knows she is okay and that is all she desires is for the other's safety.

The characters are all top notch. You know when a villain is so bad you get shivers or get disgusted every time they get mentioned? Yeah, that's how these characters will make you feel. And good! The characters that were made to be hated are despised, and the characters that are made to be liked are loved.

I don't know if I don't have a wide variation of different cultivation novels, but there were some things included in this that I thought were really intriguing and cool!!!

Zhong Michu was seen as a cultivator who could never lose a battle, and this was proven as wrong. And Gu Fuyou was seen as a cultivator who would never grow strong, and this was also proven incorrect.

The bonus chapters after the end of vol 2 were also heart-breaking. You can read them when you get to them, but I chose to read them at the end of the whole novel.

Streets say the translation is an edited mtl. I really do hope this gets a proper translation soon. It definitely does irk me, but it has nothing to do with the novel itself and the author. Don't let that drive you away from being interested in this novel. Keep an eye out for either a proper translator or even an official translation. I already deeply love this novel. I can't imagine it when it's done correctly.

This was definitely one of my most favorite reads, and I recommend everyone the story of Gu Fuyou and Zhong Michu. <<less

Maybe I wasn’t in the right mindset for this specific novel, and my judgement got completely overshadowed by that.

Before reading this novel, I had just finished a masterpiece of a revenge story that left me thirsty for more, and now here we are.

I was told that this novel is a big complex revenge plot, but compared to my recent read, it really, really wasn’t.

And again, this by itself isn’t inherently a bad thing at all, but it lead me to build unrealistic expectations for the book.

Spoiler

For the first part of the book, it start really slowly and nicely so we could see the characters develop and take shape right in front of us, and it ended with a tense cliffhanger.

However, both of what I mentioned died in the next book. Every character that wasn’t the main leads was basically just a cardboard cutout.

Personally, I found the MC completely unbearable and even unrecognizable compared to the first book. I get that she went through an insane amount of trauma and is even in a different body, however, there wasn’t a single trace of her past self at all, especially when you compare her to the FL who went through a similar situation.

[collapse]
and finally.... the revenge..... All I will say is that if you’re planning to read this novel solely or mainly for this reason I’d advise against it. but if you see the revenge plot as a great addition to the story, then by all means, go for it.

When I finished the second book, I was in shock when I realized that there was a THIRD part, and the first thought that came to mind was, “What more is there even to say?” And after every chapter, I found myself repeating the same exact sentence.

The last part felt completely unnecessary and lazy. You could tell that the author was out of ideas on how to end the book, so instead of writing “the end”, they just threw every plot they could think of on the spot.
Spoiler

Like there was literally arc after arc when the previous arc hadn’t even finished, and by almost the end of of the book, you get like five different plots that go back and forth until they finally get some closure.

[collapse]

In the end, after some thinking, if you ask me if it’s a horrible book, I’d tell you it really isn’t.

It definitely had some plot holes, but it’s the type of novel you should read at a fast pace with zero analytical thinking to enjoy the fun ride.

Unfortunately, in my case, I couldn’t do that because I thought the book was bigger than it actually was, and I only realized that by the end of it.

I’d still recommend this book for anyone. <<less

This is a very, very good novel. I was extremely impressed by the characters, not only were they very fleshed out and 3 dimensional, they were consistent throughout the story. The MC goes from being a sweet naive teenager to a hardened war leader but her core personality doesn't change, though there are some times that she's nearly mad with grief and the need for revenge. The FL is also amazing. She has her own problems but she sincerely loved the MC and supports her emotionally. It was refreshing that... more>> she didn't always agree with the MC and let her do whatever she wanted.

The only complaint I have is that the pacing of the plot is all over the place. I particularly didn't like the time skip, it felt forced. We missed seeing the MC grow and afterwards she was a bit op. That said, I cried soooooo much in this book. I was sobing into my pillow at a few parts. 10/10 <<less

I binge read this gem. This was a page-turner, devoid of unnecessary filler, as previously noted. The writing was so compelling that I developed a deep empathy for the characters, vividly imagined the world, and fully immersed myself in its magical moments. It was an emotional roller-coaster, leaving me satisfied with the ending. I'll deeply miss these characters.

my heart is full <3 this resonated deeply with me, particularly the slow process of falling in love with life again. The pacing is a bit fast sometimes, but it also has an effect where I was never bored and everything that happened felt relevant. Probably one of my favorite books of all time.

A well-written baihe story filled with intentional conflict, unmet expectations, and heart-wrenching plotlines.

Gu Fuyou may have seemed laid-back, unrestrained, even indifferent - but beneath the surface, she was quick-witted, strong-willed, and fiercely loyal. She would go to great lengths for those she loved and could become ruthlessly cruel toward her enemies. Without Zhong Michu, she would have descended into a personal hell with her body and soul consumed by indistinguishable flames of vengeance.

Zhong Michu, on the other hand, was merely existing - dutifully following every expectations and tasks laid before... more>> her. Had she never met Gu Fuyou, her life would have remained an empty shell. It was only during their visit to Gu Fuyou's hometown that she truly began to live for the first time.

This is a beautiful, slow-burn romance with unexpected humor and emotional depth.

Don't believe me? You'll just have to read it and see for yourself. <<less

This is one of the best baihe novel about cultivation I've ever read. It was written in a way where you can truly imagine the scenes, feel the pain, hopelessness & happiness that the characters are experiencing. Although lacking in romance as I've liked (in my opinion), but the book is very plot-driven. The revenge was very delicious. The only con is that towards the end of the novel, as the other reviewers said, the side characters wasn't fleshed out properly and kinda just faded in the background. The ending... more>> was also a little rushed and abrupt. But, overall, good read! <<less
