“I can’t accept this! I can’t! Even as a ghost, I’m going to spend eternity cursing that your relationship will shatter like glass! Break apart like a pair of mandarin ducks that fly away from each other!” With such a persisting obsession, it would be difficult for the vengeful departed spirit to move on.

Ji Man had only read a light novel to pass the time, but she was unexpectedly pulled into a very strange dream. She had become the novel’s most vicious villainess.

The novel rewinds to the beginning. The villainess who had been ordered to commit su*cide reappears on stage and begins to follow the plot as she walks toward the novel’s ending once again, to a courtyard deep inside the marquis’ residence. A female lead that’s like the Holy Mother. Countless cannon fodders. The imperial family’s favor…

I was almost discouraged from reading this because of the reviews pertaining to the male lead. I'll admit, I don't particularly respect him as a male lead. That being said, the exquisite quality of the translations and the awesomeness of the female lead far outweighs the guy.

Ji Man isn't overpowered, in fact, sometimes she loses and suffers setbacks. But she's clever, and more than that I appreciate her attitudes and perspectives towards life and death and success and failure. The reason I can tolerate the ML's hoe-ish ways and full... more>> harem is because Ji Man does not give one crap about him and instead we first see our ML becoming kore intrigued by her and want more from her.

I genuinely really enjoyed this novel, and with the translation quality and speed, I recommend it to everyone <<less

Up to date on the current release. This story is absolutely fantastic, full of social and political intrigue. It's a mature read because of the realistic portrayals of character archetypes familiar to this genre. Because of that realism, I think the story is rather heavy, so for readers who expect pure and fluffy romances, this won't be easy to digest. Fortunately, the author does not pointlessly drag and stretch out conflicts. The development is seamless and I'll admit I sacrificed a whole night of sleep just to read all the... more>> current translations from the beginning.

I've noticed a concern from many readers. The ML certainly sleeps around a lot; that is expected from a man in this time period. But I feel this part of him will contribute to the romance in the later half of the novel: the translator has dropped curious hints about his gradual changes in some of their notes at the end of some chapter releases, so personally I look forward to seeing how he will pursue and beg for the FL to look his way. Recently I've taken a liking to slow-burn romances and I think this novel will demonstrate it beautifully without detracting from a fully fleshed story. <<less

Currently on ch168 of the Chinese raws (probably 300+ in the translations)

This novel is very, very good. I don't know about people calling it "not romance" -- I really don't like genre conventions and how they force authors to box themselves.

I'll tell you what I love about this novel. Both the MC and ML are incredibly realistic of their respective time periods. The MC is very smart and practical, but isn't perfect and makes mistakes at times. The ML is a jerk at first -- because of his sweet... more>> love for the female lead (not MC) -- she's the first person he's ever loved after all, I cut him some slack.

You grow to discover that he's actually incredibly cunning... he seems like a fool in the beginning chapters, but trust me he knows a lot more than he lets on. He plays sides. And he protects his own as best as he can.

If you want a fluffy uwu novel where the ML is dashing, all-powerful, will make sweet love to MC... I'm sure there's plenty of other novels like that out there. This one isn't, and is so much better for it! I love that they have s*x initially though they aren't in love with each other. And that they fall for each other later! You'll see when he does have feelings for her -- it's very sweet. <<less

This is a "transmigrated into a cannon fodder character in a book" story. Not bad despite the cliched "make a pile of money off my superior future-knowledge" side plot.

Spoiler

I like this series despite the male lead (love interest) being an irredeemable POS. The MC, Ji Man, is pretty awesome to start but then decided to go along with the ghost of the body she's inhabiting and trying to get the male lead to fall in love with her. Instead of being sensible and divorcing the sh*tty husband her body was married she stays with him. She could do this easily since she actually has a huge pile of money she earned selling non-toxic cosmetics. I can partially understand she's doing it because the body's ghost is holding her captive but after the 90th assassination attempt or plot to frame her for a crime, you think she would have noped out of there and cut her losses.

I absolutely love this novel. If you're looking for romance and face slapping only, it's not the book for you. But if you enjoy the intricacies of a politics, this is a definitely a novel to be read.

So the FL is introduced as a villainess, everyone else seems pretty flat and typical characters of a novel in the same trope. But it's like how you read a novel, how the FL reads the novel. The characters are fleshed out as she lives the life of the villainess she's cast as.

The... more>> ending surprised me. <<less

Interesting.

The Transmigration girl, the female lead must survive and "her previous"-self always did the bad and horrible things. Can she make everyone believe that she change to be a better person ?

I am curious with what will happen next.

I love the translator's work. ????

It's just starting out, but this story has a fun elegance about it that you normally wouldn't find in transmigrated villainess stories. For one, the villainess is already in trouble. Which is similar to Duke's Daughter. But unlike Duke's Daughter, this girl's support network starts with only three. Herself, a ghost, and a servant girl.

And that's the charm of this story. Like a game of chess with a massive handicap, we get to watch as she stealthily sets up the board to make a large splash. One wrong move... more>> and its checkmate. <<less

4.5 but rounded down.

I like this story. The ML starts out pretty unlikable but he kind of grows on you as the story goes. Especially after he gets his karmic justice for his decisions.

It's just a little long and run on at points. Some of the choices that characters make are pretty braindead and feel like unnecessary plot points.

The MC is Ji Man, a woman who transmigrates into the body of Nie Sangyu in a light novel she had read before falling asleep. Nie Sangyu asks her to fulfil her... more>> wish and that would be the only way for the MC to return to the modern world. Immediately, the MC sets out to try and understand what that wish was while trying to orchestrate a better life for herself. Unfortunately, she has to deal with all the negative things Nie Sangyu did prior to her arrival. She doesn't want to fall in love with the ML as he already has a backyard full of women and knows she would be unable to accept it.

Spoiler

In the end, the ML only ends up with two women in his back house. The MC and a former prostitute. While the pair start off as enemies, the concubine ends up becoming the MC's ally and shares gossip with her. This doesn't happen until later on in the novel, after the concubine has lost her child and been sent to an outside estate where everyone says she lost her mind over it.

[collapse]

The ML is Ning Yuxuan, a very intelligent Lord who manipulates quite a bit of the Kingdom. Originally, he married the MC after her adult ceremony but then he pretty much ground her love for him into nothing. Out of the two leads, he is the first to fall in love. He also starts out very unlikable in this story. While his choices make sense if you put it in the context of the setting and his need to protect his family, it does make it hard to like him. He always chooses what he believes is the lesser of two evils.

Spoiler

Such as the "accidental" death of one of his unborn children through a concubine. He arranged it so that she would be bumped by a maid and then prescribed the wrong medication so that she lost the child. The reason being was that she had been placed into his home as a gift from the Crown Prince and he did not want to be in that faction.

As the story progresses, it becomes very clear that he has been manipulating all the women in his house and deciding that they won't get pregnant unless he says otherwise. He almost sterilized the MC through the incense he had given to OG Nie Sangyu.

[collapse]

We join the story during Nie Sangyu's confinement after she has been demoted from the primary wife. From the beginning, we learn that the ML's house is messy and there is a growing conflict for the throne. The first portion of the story focuses more on the MC coping with the women around her while she tries to understand what Nie Sangyu wanted from her.

We're introduced to a plethora of side characters. It was kind of nice to see that they didn't get written off even if the writer was occasionally a little inconsistent with their backstories (often forgetting what courtyard certain people lived in or ranks of background characters). We do get to read simplified backstories of some of the important side characters but it fits with the way the story is going. While it's not quite a "need to know" basis, we basically learn things as the MC learns them as she doesn't have the full memories from Nie Sangyu.

Spoiler

The ML has several concubines at the start of the story.

There is the foster daughter of the Empress' servant. At the start of the story, she was an untitled concubine who was only made one because she saved the ML's life. We never learn about the incident, just hear it mentioned whenever her background is discussed. She will eventually give birth to the ML's second son. Then there is the prostitute that was given to him by the Crown Prince. She would miscarry, "lose her mind" and then return to be the only remaining woman aside from the MC in the back house at the end of the story.

Another concubine is the friend's little sister. She was originally the person communicating between the ML and the 3rd Prince. And the final main one was.... the other one. I can't remember how she ended up in his harem but she's the one responsible for the downfall of the MC's family.

After that, he gains several more concubines. One being the MC's servant who wanted to climb higher (and cuckolded the ML). The second was a prostitute that he tried to use to hide his affection for the MC from the Crown Prince. The third was a woman he brought in to pretend that she was his outside mistress.

He also ends up marrying the OG FL and her rank keeps bouncing around throughout the story.

[collapse]

Once we're introduced to the ML, it's kind of easy to perceive him as pretty terrible. He almost always suspects the MC as the perpetrator for anything bad in his back house. Which is why the introduction of his mother is quite possibly one of the best characters. The ML's Mother wholeheartedly supports the MC and often wonders where her son's intelligence went as the story progresses.

Spoiler

It turns out that his intelligence was perfectly fine. He was manipulating everything all along. From the pregnancy control to letting the women target one another. Everything was under his control. He just didn't want to have any one woman gain too much power as that would lead him to straying into different political camps.

There is actually a line in the novel where he thinks to himself that he needs to find out how to control the MC because otherwise, she would control him.

[collapse]

What makes up for the very terrible male character is the different twists and turns the story takes, and the fact that the MC is not all knowing. She does remember things from the original novel but she also reveals that there were some things glossed over in the story. Such as the backstories of some of the side characters. It's a nice change from an omnipotent MC. Especially when she makes the wrong decision when she becomes overconfident.

Spoiler

After she learns and deals with her servant who betrayed her, she makes zero contingency plans for what could possibly happen if others knew what the servant had known. This story has it with it being inappropriate for noble women to operate businesses but she never considers trying to find some way to avoid any fallout. Even though she knows that her servant had revealed all her secrets to another of the concubines. While it does showcase her as fairly human and not fully adjusted to the world, it just felt a little s*upid. Especially given that she had shown remarkable intelligence up to that point.

It makes it worse that this is the thing that results in Nie Sangyu's entire clan (other than her and her brother) being beheaded for the crime of bribery.

There is another s*upid moment when she knows the First Prince cannot be trusted but yet her and her brother wholeheartedly believe that he will allow them to get revenge for their family by killing the at-the-time Emperor (the story goes through 5 emperors just saying). Of course, this is a trap for them as it allows the First Prince to take over the throne with less problems (mu*dered Emperor is easier to replace than a deposed Emperor). It's like the MC forgot that the First Prince tried to seduce her repeatedly and then tried to kill her when it was clear she wasn't going to fall for it.

I suppose I could just say that the MC is smart unless the story needs her to be dumb as a box of rocks.

[collapse]

There are a lot of interesting characters and no one is truly good or bad in this story. Even the MC does some questionable things.

Spoiler

Despite being a "Modern" woman, she had no problems drugging the ML to allow her servant to sleep with him and become a concubine.

Then there is the punishment of that particular concubine later. If the MC had a moral dilemma about the punishment of the concubine, the concubine's lover and child all being executed by drowning, it only lasted a few sentences and then she moved on. Of course, it's sort of implied that she didn't drown the baby but she has zero chill when it comes to ordering rocks on the people's feet and drop them in the pond.

Sure, this servant had betrayed her repeatedly before then, it just felt out of character for a Modern person to be so non-chalant about ordering someone's death.

Weirdly enough, there are other things that she couldn't do despite it being very matching to the above. Such as using the slow acting poison on the OG FL. Instead, she tosses it into a pond.

[collapse]

The OG FL was probably the only thing I didn't really like about the story. She apparently had the IQ of a teabag and often did things that were detrimental to both her position and to the guy she loved.

Spoiler

Seriously. She tries to tell him that she's fine with him seeing other women and even sends him to the concubines. And then gets upset when he does so.

She plots against the other wives/concubines but doesn't realize she's being used by others in almost every scheme she commits. Especially her schemes against the MC.

One of her last schemes blows up spectacularly when she discovers the ML's Heir is actually the MC's son. So she reveals that to someone who then reveals it to the First Prince (who was the Emperor at that point). The kid gets taken into the palace as a hostage which totally destroys any hope she had of not being ignored and is one of the last nails in the coffin for her.

[collapse]

The story is also fairly long. It's not something that you can read in one sitting. The Translator did break it up but that doesn't really help. Over all, it's a fairly decent story with a detestable ML (at first) and calculating MC. I just wish there had been a happier ending with their full family but the side stories were nice.

Spoiler

After everything the MC went through, she only learns that the ML's Heir is her actual son after he is already a toddler. The ML actually let her live in the same manor as the boy without telling her because he didn't believe she wouldn't be able to reveal it. She only learns this after she faked her death for 2 years and returned to the capital to get revenge.

And she doesn't even get to spend much time with her son after that because he gets poisoned and ends up having to become a monk's disciple. Something that we learn was a plot by the monk to gain the boy as the child had spirituality. It feels like the MC was cheated of her son but then she doesn't get to hung up on it anyway. Her reaction is kind of along the "my son is poisoned, I have to send him away to take care of him... anyway, did you see the weather today?"

I did like the ML reveal to the Emperor (former First Prince) that it was the Emperor's plot to have the child kidnapped that made the ML choose to leave his camp and support one of the other princes.

[collapse]

The side stories were kind of entertaining as well. Just didn't really add much to the story of the main couple. <<less

I want to give 3 star but accidentally click 5 and can't revise it.

One of the worst ML I've ever read.
Spoiler

And the fact that MC fall in love with him is disappointing bcs she's smart and all. If you expect a good and omnipotent ML it'snot for you. The ML get tricked a lot of times by his concubines but mostly passive until it's too late, and he also make a lot of mistake. He's hormonal and still the author somehow describe him as know it all and most powerful noble whatnot.

This novel was pretty entertaining to me, There were times that I really couldn't stand the ML but I'm glad I stayed until the end. I'm really satisfied at how their "love story" developed, it was long, yeah, but I think it was well written. I will definitely miss reading this novel. The low rating this novel has is prolly because people couldn't get until the very end and see how the things were resolved and developed, the novel takes a lot of chapters to be completed so it's natural... more>> that the things aren't going to be rushed. <<less

Such a great novel. Everyone acts according to their desires. Some are more desperate than others.

Wen wan is annoying as hell. I think she is the only character I want to slap so much. When you think the ML is awful, wen wan is one step ahead of him.

ML stays true to his time. I have nothing against him. I mean still a bad ML though lol

... more>> Fl. Ji man. YES! You read this novel for ji man and ji man only!

All goes well till you reach the end and find out that-

Spoiler

all of this. This is just ji man's dream 😭. Bitter sweet ending. Shes dreaming about the best life but in reality shes in a coma. Idk how to feel about this.

I really like this story! Interesting flow, unpredictable at times and good character buildups. Even though there might be some imperfections but given the massive number of characters and plot twists, it's really impressive that the author managed to string everything up nice and fast paced. Highly recommended!

P.s. This is ancient china setting so having many concubines in the harem and nobles abusing power etc is the norm. No need to be too judgemental, imo!

What a rollercoaster ride. In terms of quality that is. I would recommend you not to waste your time on this.

There are around 500 chapters to this novel, the first 100 was great. Things kind of went down the hills, then pick up again around chap 300, and dipped back again into mediocrity.

To be honest, I like that the FL faces a lot of difficulties. If life is too smooth, this novel would be boring. I also like that both ML and FL make bad decisions, because that make it... more>> more realistic. I like the side characters even more because they are sympathetically human.

But the main couple receives little to no consequences for their actions. They really didn't deserve their HE at all. Despite looking down on the second FL, main FL becomes a white lotus / green tea combination exactly like her. Like the translator even said, she continues to make bad decisions and the plot armour somehow makes it right?

Some examples:

Spoiler

Forcing a marriage on a man who was r*ped by another woman. It turned out that the man was drugged with aphrodisiac and violated the woman unknowingly (FL does not know that).

Drugging her brother with aphrodisiac because he refuses to sleep with his wife. Turned out the brother knows that their family was in trouble and did not want to implicate his wife with a child

[collapse]

The ML also doesn't have to bear responsibilities for his decision. He married a lot of women, imp**gnated them, and ruined their lives. But alas, turned out that all of these women were evil! It's really convenient.

I also didn't like that how the author keeps saying and implying that FL is so different from all the other women, no other women could have done this, all the other women are influenced by emotions, etc. That just further enhances misogyny. They really missed out an opportunity to showcase how women in different eras can adapt differently. Instead, what we have is the all knowing righteous FL, the plot device best friends, and greedy emotional driven women.

2/5 solely because the first part was a fun read.

Big thanks to the translator fuyuneko though. Excellent transalation work. <<less

I never been so indulged reading a novel before and this novel has successfully evoke all kind of emotions from myself especially frustration and helplessness.

The male lead is the most s*umbag character I've ever read. I had to stop reading couple of times because I was really pissed off with him. I lost count how many times I cursed him. Many reader stop reading because they can't stand his character. But that's what makes this novel interesting because his character is freaking realistic. He is not your typical lovey dovey... more>> male lead. He did everything within his power to simply survive in that time and doesn't give a sh*t about others. He has a harem full of woman which simply exist to serve him. He even used a prostitute to make his concubine/wife jealous. He didn't care about their feelings, didn't trust them, and constantly manipulate them for his own agenda.

After transmigration, the female lead will no longer behave like a blind fool. Yup, sadly most woman at that era just love to scheme against each other to win favor from their husband. They acknowledged themselves as the weak gender hence will desperately do anything to please their husband. The female lead will slowly break the toxic culture and this will intrigue the male lead. He will start paying attention to her and wonder why she is behaving different. He will tried his level best to tame her back and everytime he thought he has able to hold her within his palm, she will slipped away again to the point she managed to break free from him.

Bear in mind that the setting of this novel is at the ancient time. Noble man at that time marry mostly to gain political power and ensure survival of their clan/heir. So yes, harem existed at that time and it was a common thing. Woman at that time is no different than a s*ave/servant as their purpose is mainly to produce heir (woman from powerful family will get advantage because they will be the main/first wife whereby those with no status will be reduced to concubine/bed warmer only), serve husband and manage household. Even an Empress has to deal with it.

With every action there will be a consequence. The male lead initially has the upper hand and was scheming/planning a lot. Eventually as he is growing, he will face the consequences which will make him reflect on himself. He thought having a harem full of different woman will makes him secured/satisfied but gradually these woman will open the gate to his downfall. Due to him behaving like a jerk to them and plays favoritism, they will schemes against each other a lot and turns his mansion into a hell.

As for the female lead, she wants to desperately go back hence she decided to play along with the male lead at first. When she read the book, she has only two dimensional understanding about the character and shallow knowledge about the plot. Once she goes along the story, she will eventually sees the depth of each character. As a result, her perspective/action will be changed hence it will indirectly tamper the plot. Many reader has wished that the female lead should just kill herself rather than living with the s*um male lead. Well, there were times I was thinking the same but the author really portray her character to has the willpower to survive. She is strong, smart, independent but there will be times where she needs support as well from the male lead although knowing he is a scum. Towards the end of the novel, the male lead will slowly loosen himself and changed. His heart used to desire for power and stability of his status hence he doesn't care about feelings, woman or love. But once he started to desire for love and peace, he was loosing his mind as he never thought one day a woman will conquer his heart.

I read this novel like a month ago and I still can't made up my mind about the male lead. I still can't forgive him and I think I will forever hate him. I don't think I can ever accept him after everything that happened but heyyy that's just my opinion hehe. I don't really fancy the female lead as well. To be honest, all the characters in this novel showed the bright and dark side of themselves. They are not a angel or immortal hence they will dance along the tune to live. In this case, the emperor has the absolute power to control them.

That's why I love this novel because it's true to life. No one live their life like a saint right? Your will do everything to get what your heart desire the most.

So, if you're looking for a politically intriguing, gritty and realistic historical novel with awesome translation (yes, the translation is superb and it is one of the reason why I keep reading it although I'm frustrated to death with the male lead lolll) then 'The Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir' is going to be perfect. Take your time to read it and if you have heart issue, please standby your medicine because you may experience heart attack reading this novel haha. <<less

I'm really sorry author.. I know this will be a great novel but I just can't bring myself to like the ML. I desperately hope NXY is not the ML to comfort myself and to continue reading this, , but I just can't! Well it's still early right, but I truly can't stand it when man says he love someone and then go hug and have s*x with someone else. Yes it's the setting of the novel but, other novel that have harem too, the ML don't particularly love someone... more>> until the FL arrive. Yet this one he already has WW (and already married) and then he supposedly end up with JM cause she is FL. I will say that ML is a scumm, and because of him I stop reading this. It's already like this in chapter 30, wonder what NXY will do in later chapter, well the other review has affirmed this, he's a complete b*stard.

But author, I will still read you other works, I just hope the ML is not like this, and I will give your other works 5 star. <<less

Despite the rating, I find it enjoyable, not so much for the extra story though.

MC is smart enough and while at the start treating herself as passerby, she eventually accept it as her new life. Like most people here, I feel the urge to strangle ML at some point as well.

In my opinion, the way these characters behave are more realistic, or at least not as idealistic than most novel.

The translation is very good, sometimes TN give references for the chapter in the plot, in case reader forgot about it... more>> and it really helps. <<less

I don't usually write reviews but here we are.

The pros:

  • MC was pretty cool at the beginning, I really enjoyed how resourceful she was, and how she did not give a f*ck about what the ML wanted.
  • Her friendship with Errong was quite cute too
  • I love political drama and schemes abound so that aspect was really enjoyable. (I do wish though that it was less of a 'romance' and more focused on the political aspect. Oh well)
  • And the translation was really good! I read both the english and parts of the chinese and the translator did a great job.
The cons:

  • The ML, yes there were many times I wanted the MC to suffocate him in his sleep and be done with it. As people have said, he's ruthless, conniving and an all around walking STD who does things for his own gain. However, all of the characters are like that, including our dear MC so it's a bit unfair to target him and only him. I do wish though that they didn't end up together.
  • Actually all the characters were pretty unlikeable, but in the way where I wanted to keep on reading and see what trainwreck happened next. This isn't necessarily a con but it's interesting how all of them are pretty selfish in the end and for good reason too.
  • Spoiler

This part I'm pissed off about. The MC goes and puts an aphrodisiac in her brothers food so he'll sleep with his wife which he shows only platonic feelings for. Technically a person can shrug the drug off if they really want to but it did not sit right with me. MC shows no regret and there are no repercussions for her actions which seem borderline SA.

    [collapse]
  • Many of the side female characters have the iq of a boiled egg but that's neither here nor there
  • oh and the ending authors note like wth I suppose I should have known.
tl;dr, politics stuff interesting and took up most of the book thank god, romance was lukewarm, characters were horrid.

Both the MC and the ML are manipulative and it totally depends on their mood and acting how they want to behave. I get that as the novel is set in ancient China it doesn't have a sweet romantic story.

But... dang there is just too much dog blood for lords sake.🤦🏻‍♀️

Every character really tested my conscience to the utmost. It clearly shows the ugly thoughts of human beings and the choices they make in desperate situations.

I desperately want to believe there is good in the world... This novel is... more>> literally destroying my worldview with the truth.

It's supposed to be a fiction damn it... It shows the evil side of humans too much.

I wanted to read something more pleasant than something which will get me a headache so not my cup of tea.

Has legit zero fluff... And thinking of a scene as fluff really hurts your conscience👀 <<less

I liked this story. I've read quite a bit of transmigration novels and by far I liked the MC and how ordinary she was. There weren't as many scenes of the MC awwing the simple minded ancient people with her wit and ability to scheme. Though they were there, I think they were done in good taste. Though the MC did get a bit annoying with her double standard and inability to sometimes see the truth behind her own actions. It was one of those, Oh the writing is good... more>> so I feel strong emotions for the character rather than omg wtf is she doing this is s*upid. Tho I feel like the ending left a lot to be desired. Though I haven't quite made it through all the epilogue stories my feelings probably wont change. <<less

GIVE THIS NOVEL A CHANCE!

This is not a clear-cut, straightforward romance. The brilliant author weaved this tale with many, many layers.

The characters are really well crafted, and I was surprised I ended up loving the ML! From a slag stallion to a loving one woman man, at first he's a typical black hearted ML but as the story progresses it's all slowly revealed.

Love it! I can't really express all my thoughts well (just finished it and I need some time to digest), but please give this novel a chance. Especially... more>> because there's a really good English translation out! <<less
