Six months ago, tens of thousands of black phantom towers appeared all over the world, floating above the cities. Chemists, physicists, religious people… all of them could do nothing.

Six months later, people became used to the towers and no longer paid them attention.

One day, Tang Mo saw a flying insect crash into it instead of going through it. The next day, a sharp and clear child-like voice issued an announcement to all humans.

“Ding dong! November 15th, 2017. The earth is online.”

The black tower’s three iron-clad rules:

1. Everything is explained by the black tower.

2. 6 o’clock to 18 o’clock is the game time.

3. All players, please strive to attack the tower.

I have never wrote any reviews for any novels that i've read (so it might not seem like a review at all, apologies) but it doesn't mean that I don't love them all but this novel. DAMN... IT DID SOMETHING TO ME

it made me lose sleep and I finished reading it within a month while also working every weekdays. im not gonna leave any spoilers I just have to say that I love the main characters Tang Tang x Fu Wenduo and all the side characters, especially my most favorite... more>> psychopath, Bai Ruo Yao and Mu Huixue and the children. Fhck it I love everyone in this books even the monsters. This novel also made my last remaining braincells to burst because to read this novel it needs a lot of brain capacity and I dont think I have that QAQ However I enjoyed every moment that I read it and cried eventho the angst isnt even very noticeable. But if you are looking for pure bl with a lot of smut then this book might not be it for you?? because it focuses more on the plot than the cp (also because its slowburn). but their relationship is one of the most strongest and purest because it is shown clearly throughout the novel with how they interact and the trust and understanding they have with each other is just like a breath of fresh air. You dont see a lot of it in some novels. Okay bye 👋 <<less

I finished reading this a long time ago so I don't really remember the exact details of this novel. What I remember is that it's a very great read to pass the time. Both MC and ML are OP in their own rights and is unstoppable when working together. Some game mechanics just flew over my head since my brain is too dumb to comprehend but overall, the games and mystery behind the black towers are very interesting.

Spoiler

That normal world AU though cracks me up. MC sure does have his priorities straight.

it's ok.... idk if it was the translation but so much got lost in the density. additionally, I think that the author just made up their own logic. I really wanted to pay attention, have a stimulating story presented and a romance but I just kept going, "wait, what?" and, "why did that just happen?" also there's so much inconsistency that I wonder if it's the translation or the writing (ie changing motives at the drop of a hat; the previous thing said before matters less...)

I just finished reading this novel and I really liked it. I thought the story is very good and the relationship development between MC and ML very harmonious. Even though at first, some characts seeme be too anoying or calculating, incluind the MC, they have their own unique characteristics and over time it's possible to attached to several of them.

Most of the missions that happens in the course of the novel aren't serious or terrifying, but are more focused on puzzle and math. So if you like this I recommend... more>> giving the story a chance. <<less

(4.5/5) One the first novel that got me into reading danmei. The games are interesting and the characters make this book shine. I like how the MC and ML relationship progressed. Gotta go in blind or else the mystery won't be fun. The ending was opened ended and rushed, but it's a solid story. Even the "villains" are really interesting and fleshed out. It's a great novel to start your journey into the BL novels.

Truly amazing world construction, good characters and main relationship. Lacking more romance (I'm a romantic tho) but the extras give that. I would definitely buy a copy.

I literally made an account on here just to write this review, so here goes:

*Disclaimer, I finished this novel a couple months ago, so these are just my general impressions (a.k.a. I will not be backing up my claims with teXtuAl EvIdEnCe)

    1. Plot: 4.5/5 - As you have probably surmised from the rest of the reviews, this novel does NOT skimp on the plot. The general concept is intriguing, the progression of events is well thought out, and the author does a good job of setting up satisfying payoffs. The main reason why I gave this novel a 4.5/5 and not 5/5 is because there are a couple of 'lazy' plot points towards the end (a.k.a some hand-wave-y logic that sort of took away from the tension at the climax of the story), but overall this is a solid, competently written storyline with plenty of exciting twists.
    1. Characters: 5/5 - THIS is what puts TEIO above so many other novels in my opinion. I absolutely loved each and every character (even the villains), and I get the feeling that the author did too, because you can tell that they put an extraordinary amount of time and effort into making these people feel real. Tang Mo - the MC, is snarky and intelligent, but also so goddamn s*upid I... more>> want to hit him over the head with a brick sometimes (in the best way possible). Fu Wenduo - the ML, is level-headed, NOT AN as*hole (low bar ik, but still, worth mentioning), and also unintentionally hilarious in all of his socially-awkward glory. The supporting cast is full of 3D characters with unique personalities, including but not limited to: some hella adorable kids (who still pull their own weight), a HELLA badass lady (no spoilers), and screwed up versions of fairytale characters.
    1. TL Quality/Writing Style: 4/5 - As expected from Rainbow Turtle, the translation quality is pretty good and definitely retains a lot of the original flAVoR of the novel. There are some minor grammatical/pronoun issues, but it doesn't detract from the overall enjoyability for me. As for the prose, the author does a good job balancing description and action, and there are a couple of scenes near the end that are so well-written and emotionally poignant that, months later, they are still burned into my memory.
    1. General Enjoyability/Re-Readability: 4.5/5 - As someone who loves puzzles and logic games, this was an absolute delight to read. I think I actually finished the entire thing in one day because I just could not bring myself to click away. Most of the puzzles in the beginning are actually solvable if you pay enough attention, and the fact that each puzzle/stage was drastically different from the last kept the book fresh and engaging. My only complaint is that a few of the games were way too convoluted/hard to explain in written format, and honestly my brain sort of hurt by the end of the book. Still, I would 100% be down to re-binge this novel in one day.

Totally love this! The story, the games and even the romance. But the only disappointing thing is the yaoi tag. It doesn't pass for a yaoi story.. It's just a shounen ai. With very less romance. It's all about the mutual trust as the story keeps progressing. It's a survival show afterall. They are always on the edge. This is a very good story if u r here for a thrilling ride. Also only if lengthy and detailed descriptions of games don't bore u. Otherwise, don't bother reading

Romance: For me, it was just the right amount of romance. It was sweet, heartfelt and not sudden or too fast-paced.

Action: I liked the action scenes, at first I thought it was a little silly but it quickly changed my mind.

Games: I liked the ''puzzles'', it was fun to try to figure out things as the games went on. Some things were a bit too obvious to me, and some a little confusing.

Setting: The setting of the novel was quite unique, I liked the way the world was portrayed, it... more>> was different from most of the post-apocalyptic novels I have read so far.

Character psychology: I liked character developments throughout the story and both positive and negative psychological changes were well noted.

Overall impression: It was an interesting novel to read, the translation IS NOT as bad as some reviews say, but it might be because I tortured myself with reading MTL before... Regardless, the translation was okay for me, readable and understandable. There were certain mistakes which were a little confusing but nothing that couldn't be understood with a little logic and reading from the context.

I would certainly recommend this novel. <<less

f*cking god tier!! I was addicted I didn’t stop reading till I was already at the end!!

This novel I would describe it as Unlimited Flow so if you like this genre highly HIGHLY recommend!!

MC is terrific and ML is just as great too. They both kept me engaged and actually interested in their story. And with the MC’s ability it’s so fun to see how he really has to think outside the box to be able to use the best way he can.

Anyways, everything about it was fun and engaging.... more>> So read it and give it a try!! <<less

Rating: 5/5- Thought provoking, action packed and wonderfully memorable!

The Earth is Online is definitely deserving of the high ratings and rave reviews. It's captivating, thrilling and depicts humanity at its finest and its worst. The plot is clever and the characters are wonderfully brought to life.

No character is perfect but even the most annoying humans and bosses find a way to creep into your heart or memory. The usage of universally recognised characters and ruthless behaviour with mild comedy in between made this intriguing, gripping and satisfying.

I must be honest,... more>> many of the games made no sense to me even when each reached its conclusion but it was interesting. The BL element in this story is so minimal that it is basically non-existent in the novel, but the novel in itself is spectacular! (There are like 3 kisses at best in the whole story). Also you don't really feel like it's a bad thing that there's no romance coz they are surviving the end of the world- like there's no time for romance. Whatever little romance exists is satisfying and sweet and very realistic! Before Global University Exam and The Earth is Online I wouldn't really count myself as a horror reader, but these two books have definitely opened up a new door of wonders for me. I'm certainly looking forward to more horror BL (with hopefully a bit more of a romance element)

The story ends on a really bittersweet note for some reason, maybe because of the dreary reality and the heartbreak many of the characters live through. It just got me thinking that if I had to experience the end of the world in a similar manner would I survive? (I highly doubt it coz I'm weak AF)

My one complaint was that the ending should have been a few chapters longer. There were some plot holes and it felt very rushed when concluding the black tower saga. A bit more interpretation would have nicely closed the story. I just felt a little whiplashed when it came to the real secret of the black tower. Also- what happened with Eve's Apple? This is an incredible read that you will never forget. Highly recommend reading this for a spectacular plot about the human spirit. <<less

This is the most amazing novel I’ve ever read. The ending was beautiful and I feel it was a bit bittersweet probably because it was ending but overall, I’m glad I came back I finished this novel. There’s so many characters that you’ll love and hate and love again. Don’t mind me crying cuz of how I’ll miss these characters.

Recommend reading !!!

The storyline is extremely interesting where humans are forced into games involving fairytale characters who are anything like the fairytale characters you would see or hear in stories. While the romance scenes aren’t many, the whole mystery behind the sudden games makes up for it.

It took me a long time to finally get myself to read it but it’s worth it. My only issue with the novel is that some scenes are rather hard to understand. Maybe I am s*upid and just can’t seem to comprehend some parts or maybe... more>> it’s just the fact that sometimes things just get lost in translation. Despite this little setback it doesn’t change the fact that this novel is worth the read. However, I don’t recommend this novel to impatient readers. This is a novel where you really need patience and read slowly to really understand the storyline. I am one of those who speed read to get to the conclusion so some scenes became too confusing to follow along thus ruining some parts of the story for me. This novel is still on my list of reads as I plan to go back and read slower to truly get the whole experience of the novel. <<less

This is one fantastic novel!

I actually read this about two years ago but was only able to write a review now.

But I could still remember the excitement I retained throughout the book. Be it the games, cheats, or the characters, everything introduced is important for our two main characters to survive.

All in all, it is a very well written novel, I absolutely loved it.

I strongly recommend this novel to sci-fi, action, adventure and mystery lovers! This story is very interesting and involves a lot of logic. If you're a low-level IQ person like me, you might find the story difficult to understand (mostly the games actually) since the games are really difficult and tricky. However, the MC always provides a suitable explanation after each game on how he solved the game. The most disappointing thing in this novel though is the way that the author narrates the romance. Come on, author!! Give us... more>> more romantic scenes! I really don't recommend this novel to smut lovers and those who expect a lot of romance. You'll all end up disappointed haha. However, the novel has a strange addictive force to it. Once you start reading it, you'll find yourself hooked to it and lose precious sleep hours! And then, you'll find yourself crying a river once the novel ends haha. <<less

To start with the plot is pretty interesting. System and gaming quite enjoyable along with the mysteries. Characters are pretty interesting too so the development. Interesting villain too.

plot: suddenly mysterious black towers appear all over the world and six month later the earth went online. The pass the game and the human went online. Meaning the end.

Annoying part: author's emphasis on some thing which was quite annoying for me. I found the the relation between MC & ML not enjoyable and it was okay to some extent. The chapters are too long and the game and mysteries sometimes made no sense to me maybe my IQ is low whatever. Some subplot annoyed me. However, it worth time. Ending was ok for me.

People who don't have too much time to spare please care before picking it up. It took me 1 week to complete because with classes and assignment I don't get enough time to spare not to mention my poor heath.

I would give it 4.5 if I allowed to but unfortunately can't. <<less

This novel is absolutely thrilling - the survival challenges genuinely left me sweating with anxiety and I felt a whirlwind of emotions during each arc (and the arcs can get grim and very dark).

What stands out about EO is the world-building and the plot: the fantastical apocalyptic setting; creative abilities and unique challenges; the bosses; the overarching mysteries - they all weave together seamlessly towards a greater picture and absolutely phenomenal ending. The author certainly did not drop the ball on the ending as the overall 'explanation/outcome' is very satisfying... more>> - everything connects well into a wonderful 'aha!' moment. FINAL ENDING SPOILERS
Spoiler

I actually got goosebumps reading about the sacrifice made by South Asian players and MC's ultimate question to the system

[collapse]

Additionally, the MC and ML are extraordinarily capable and match each other well. It's so satisfying. They're level-headed, clever, pragmatic, fierce and strong. I really like their interactions, along with their interactions with the rest of the cast. The side characters are solid and likeable. I really like Bai Ruoyao (what a devil! haha) and Chen Shanshan in particular.

One downside is that the challenges and explanations can get quite confusing at times. Additionally, MC and ML - they are extremely level-headed and are the types to take the best action when there's danger (e.g. kill when needed) and I occasionally felt shocked at how pragmatic and emotionally cool they were. But I guess constant life-death situations hone you to become like that. Additionally, I would have liked more moments of respite in the novel to just focus on the interactions between MC and ML (... I just wanted a bit more fluff and romance) but the plot surges forward relentlessly. (Though I guess the fast-paced plot makes sense, as the reader gets pulled along the crazy ride along with the characters who naturally have no time to rest in a creepy game-like system that forces them into constant life-death battles).

Overall:

Highly recommend! Unique world-building, fascinating story and amazing characters. This is a must-read - especially if you like survival thrillers. <<less

Nothing to say anymore as other reviews already said it all. By the way, this novel is one of my favourite novel ever. I love the survival type of BL story even if the romantic element developing a bit slow. But their interaction moments are worth it. Haha..... I love Momo! For sure I will reread this novel again. For those who also love this type of story, I really recommend you guys to read GUEE (Global University Entrance Examination) !
