The Earth is Online

Six months ago, tens of thousands of black phantom towers appeared all over the world, floating above the cities. Chemists, physicists, religious people… all of them could do nothing.

Six months later, people became used to the towers and no longer paid them attention.

One day, Tang Mo saw a flying insect crash into it instead of going through it. The next day, a sharp and clear child-like voice issued an announcement to all humans.

“Ding dong! November 15th, 2017. The earth is online.”

The black tower’s three iron-clad rules:

1. Everything is explained by the black tower.

2. 6 o’clock to 18 o’clock is the game time.

3. All players, please strive to attack the tower.

I really liked what I read so far the MC is very logical and calm

the black tower games. They are the best part of the plot because I like to read over the rules or clues carefully to guess the correct answer to win or find the stowaways. I almost got the answer in the library game and mole game right but I gave up figuring it out by Mario monopoly arc because I lost my patience to think and just skip ahead. When he not playing the death games he fighting other players in the world which is now basically your typical apocalyptic world running low on food and water, no laws killers running amok so far I have not seen any romance between the ML. The only reason I know he the ML is because the author keep teasing about it in her little theater

I AM SO SORRY I ACCIDENTALLY RATED IT TWO I WANTED TO RATE FIVE

I just had to come back to leave a review because it's just that good.

The world building was so creative and so were the instances. The characters were written so well too and I liked how the female characters actually had personalities and were equally strong which is rare to find in a bl novel. I would definitely recommend it if you're into a plot heavy and action (+brain) filled story. The romance is probably the slowest... more>> burn on the planet but it's so worth it and also doesn't feel forced. I learned a lot from this that it made me think I would survive an infinite flow novel too (I won't). Anyways this was one of the first (and best) danmei that I ever read, so I have a really special place for it in my heart. 11/10 ♡ <<less

This novel was.. A complete surprise.

Having been aware of this book since a few years ago, I only now gave it a serious read because the first chapter was a bit complicated and I was more drawn towards simpler concepts. Perhaps my brain was too messy to imagine how the black towers looked, who was who, and what was happening in the fight scenes.

Once I read through the starting chapters however, it became easier. And next thing I know I'm already at the last chapter.

There's one aspect that can be... more>> improved. With almost every "game", the main character always wins. To the point that even in the hardest instance where every previous player died, I'm certain he will clear it in one go.

On the other hand, what I was most impressed by would be the characters. Because of the length of this danmei, the author had enough time to introduce every player important to the plot. The side characters who only appeared a few times were given a brief inroduction and the ones that stick - the auhor made sure the readers would remember them. There's a few I adored aside from the main couple and their kids: the "Hehe" dude and the most powerful woman.

Next would be the plot. You will never know what happens next. Also, the attention to detail? Crazy.

And then here comes the worldbuilding. I have never "seen" a more mind-blowing worldbuilding than what 'The Earth Is Online' has. I'm grateful that this novel has already been completely-translated, or else I'll go nuts sitting at the edge of my seat with every page.

Conclusion: Mo Chen Huan is a great novelist. Thank you for writing this story, I'll remember it. And also for the translators, you're the best!

Can you please revive her, though? <<less

Okayyy so hiii it's been a few years since I've read this novel but it's still has a spot on my fave novels shelve. It's a part of my fave novels like ORV, TOTCF and LOTM. I admit that I don't read a lot of novels but I've read a fair amount that I can confidently review now hehehe

Ok so what I like:

    • The world building is sooo gooooood!! Like it's literally so descriptive that I can easily imagine it while reading.
    • The side characters.. The way the side characters is portrayed in this story is literally top tier!! I love how they have fleshed out personalities and how they're important in the story! Makes them feel more human in your eyes and also makes it easier to understand how they've made their decisions since you really know how they think.
    • The antagonist or villains or whatever they're called?? But the entities from the tower is really cool and interesting to me. I also love how they have really diverse personalities?? Like they're also fleshed out characters that you can easily remember. It's also funny to me how their personalities is the opposite compared to what they copied (you know this if you read it)
    • The games!! I really love how they made the games like it's sooo clever! It makes you think hard on how the characters will solve it since its not really the normal type of things you can see on other novels I guess. I kept thinking to myself while reading that "maybe if I'm also a player in this game, I'll be dead in no time" hahhaa
What I'm neutral about:

    • Some people say that the characters is bland?? Like I don't really get it since the side characters is really fun to read BUT if you say that the MC is bland then I can somehow agree but I think it's just how he is?? Like his personality is being quiet and logical. Like I thought being plain and bland is a little bit part of his character I guess but that really didn't stop me since you'll be more focused on the games rather than psychoanalyzing the characters.
What I don't Like:

    • The translation... Maybe it's where I've read it but the translation made my reading experience a roller coaster. There's some parts where I can follow the story really well and some where I'm sooo confused on what's happening??? Like it makes me irritated since it's the games where it's mostly confusing to read.
    • The ending is kinda not satisfactory for mee... I guess since the story is quiet intense, then suddenly it ends like that?? Kinda anticlimactic for me I guess?? Kinda hoping for more huhuhuhu
Well that's all I can sayyy hehhehe, I highlighted it because I can but well here's my review!!!

It's a good story. I like how it's not one of those bl novels with unfair relationships where the top is handsome, rich and all-powerful while the bottom is unlucky. In this story they're different and compliment each other in more ways than one. The best thing I like about them is their tacit understanding.

I want to go part by part, because there really are a lot of things to say about this novel.

First of all, we have to talk about everything that has to do with the context of the black tower. Like many other people, I think that the novel is very well developed in that aspect. The mere idea of a black tower appearing out of nowhere suspended in the air is really creative and quite interesting to listen to, all that structure that the author gave to the black tower... more>> (characters' abilities, player divisions, power differences in the tower's monsters, the complexity of the games) is so well planned that it's just !! Also, it was fun to have childhood characters being the tower's monsters, (like Mario Bros or Santa), and even funnier that the author made it seem like the tower's monsters have a life outside of the games, making them meet each other, and even creating a city just for them. I don't know, I thought that deserves a mention as well.

This novel made me laugh on several occasions and I really enjoyed watching the protagonist go through the games and gradually increase his strength. Sadly, this was only during the beginning of the novel.

I loved the idea of a strong MC who is able to hold his own, but does that need to be his only personality? From start to finish, I don't remember a single strong emotion from him. Man, you're practically at the end of the world, being forced to participate in games where you could die if you're not good enough, and it would be totally normal to be scared or anxious, yet the MC vaguely expresses emotions, and why? Obviously because "in such a situation, there's no time to cry or be scared" sounds convincing, but as you go further into the novel it just feels like an excuse to make him different and stronger than everyone else, and honestly, it's hard to empathize with such a character.

Also, the development of MC and ML's relationship is disappointing, like they had to be a couple just because they knew each other before the tower appeared. I never got to feel anything real between them, because they weren't that compatible together. Even when they became a couple it was boring and to be honest there wasn't much difference in how they treated each other after that. There was never a moment where they felt vulnerable, where they expressed their emotions openly. We never even had a good reason why they liked each other. Although they had their cute moments together, where they would chat casually or exchange jokes, that's all, everything else felt bland.

It's a promising story, and I really wanted to like it, but somewhere along the way it became repetitive and tedious to read.

That doesn't mean it's bad, it has its positive points that make it interesting, but it could be better. <<less

I don't like how much the characters repeats things when they speak, the games are not the type that I enjoy but it isn't bad. Also I don't like the romance, it doesn't matters that is very little, I just don't enjoy those moments that they have of romance between them.

But is well written and interesting, I also like the idea of towers and I love Bai Ruoyao so I don't believe that it deserves a rating lower than 4.

This story really makes you use your brain, but the concepts are well-developed and interesting, and the author often introduces new concepts and topics (that are actually present in reality). The games/scenarios are especially amazing and well-connected.

I really like how independent the MC, Tang Mo, is. He actually doesn't act alone in games much, but he's smart, and he has the strength to protect himself. Often, he is an important contributor to the solution, and most of the time, he can figure out the solution on his own. He doesn't... more>> need to rely on the ML, Fu Wenduo, to solve his own problems, nor does he suddenly become helpless and overshadowed by Fu Wenduo.

Of course, Fu Wenduo is also pretty good, although... he doesn't develop much, being more of a static character. However, that's mostly because he is strong from the start. In terms of strength, intelligence, and position (in the relationship, among other people, etc), they're well-balanced.

Regarding the romance: It's pretty good. It's not very fluffy; instead, the MC and ML tend to be more calm and stable, so they have a lot of trust in each other instead. Of course, that's mostly after they find out each other's identities, but even before that, their relationship was pretty good. I like their relationship dynamic because they trust and rely on each other but are also very competitive with each other. <<less

5 stars!!!

This is the best thing I've ever read, the slow-burn, the mind games, the flow, everything was perfect. Only thing I dislike is that the extra chapters weren't long enough 😭😭😭. The amount of times I was physically blown away from the way Tang Mo solved the various games, leaving me reeling for days to the point I'll actually start ranting to my friend about how GENIUS that was.

I've actually read all the books by this author and they never disappoint!!!

I cannot exaggerate how good the romance is in this novel, the characters dynamic is fun and healthy. There is a clear sense of mutual respect and thats always a green flag for me. The true pull though was the page flipping narrative. It's unrealistic yet fufilling in a sense. Sadistic wish fufillment because no one would want to be in the story but watching these guys succeed is so satifying. Big reccomendation from me. ORV if the author ('s) wasn't a coward and went from bromance to romance.

2nd SciFi danmei that I've completed after Little Mushroom and I gotta say that it didn't disappoint at all 😁 I loved reading every single chapter of it, especially with the premise being new to me. The plot was well thought out, and it just keeps you at your toes everytime the character's enter a game and makes you fear for your favorite character's life XD. And yes, I mentioned "favorite" because everyone is just so cool and loveable, except for a selected few that itched me 😆. Anyways, this... more>> danmei is a must read for all yall who loves character's that have abilities, or an earth that has do or die mini games, or if you just love to read about the misery of other people, and the horrid lengths that a person will do just to survive; but even after all that, mankind can still find hope in the darkest of nights, and that stuff is really inspiring for me that my heart literally moved and I almost cried 😂. I absolutely love this novel and I hope that many other's will love it too 😊 Happy reading to yall 💜 <<less

Like so many others, this story was a recommendation from Wattpad. And I don’t regret it!

A different story with great mysteries and characters, because the strong point of this story are both its "games" and the variety of characters. The black towers are a mystery from the beginning and their bosses are as charismatic as they are cruel. However, when you create so many questions in a story it is easier for you to have half-counted things (Eva) and details that remain in the inkwell, but overall it is a... more>> story of more than four thousand pages that will feel like five hundred.

Love? This is already what everyone is looking for, obviously not a romantic book but it would be unfair to say that there is no love, especially if you read the comments of the author ٩ (˘◡˘) ۶.

In general, it is a book that would certainly re-elect (to be able to be in Spanish, the explanations of some games are complicated if it is not a good translation), I loved Tang Mo and Fu Wendu but also, yes also, to "Fly". <<less

This novel... ughhh... it's overrated 😒

1. The romance... Awful. Look, most of the BLs I've read, have slow burn ok? That's not the issue. The problem is that the romance only makes 3% of the whole novel! They barely had any moments in the book! The novel has 245 chapters. I had to reach ch 205 to have the slightest confirmation that they were a couple!

2. The plot overall is fine. It's just that it gets overwhelming. I feel like many of the games were unnecessary and some of... more>> them were too detailed. At one point I got so sick of it that I just skimmed through the chapters so I could finish faster. And believe me, I could still understand what was going on.

The monsters were fine tho. I liked how they always mocked the players and called them greedy. Humans are greedy. That's actually the truth. My fav was Mosaic... I feel you girl, I also hate studying.... : (

3. Characters... Tang Mo... the MOST BORING MC I'VE EVER SEEN! He just annoyed me so much! He is weak! Don't believe what those 5 stars ratings say. He is. He depends on those powers of his too much. And the only reason he made it to the end is bcs of his protagonist aura. He admits countless times in the novel that he is no match for ML without his powers! Also, why does he, of all people, have to have the power of collecting other people's powers? This ability is unfair, no matter who has it. The other characters were fine with just one power but this dude had to have like 20+ of them

Throughout the whole novel, I only liked 5 characters. Bai Ruoyao, Mu Huixue, Fu Wendou (ML), Andrei and Ning Zheng. Bai Ruoyao was such an interesting character! And Mu Huixue was my girl! BUT!

Spoiler

First, Bai Ruoyao got killed. I was so angry. Then, Mu Huixue got killed to resurrect Bai Ruoyao. So my fav character revived only for my other fav character to die! What the hell??

[collapse]

Fu Wendou was a good ML. His powers were impressive! He is a nice guy. There's not much to say.

I also would like to add that you learn nothing about Tang Mo during those 245 chapters. Just that his parents died, he had 2 close friends before Earth came online and that he's a librarian. That's it. You even learn more about Fu Wendou, Bai Ruoyao, Mu Huixue and Andrei than you learn about Tang Mo, the MC!

There's also a teenage girl in there and her power is 'higher intelligence' or smth... which it didn't really seem like that to me. She is just as intelligent as ML (ML is very intelligent). So I guess you could say that it's 'higher intelligence for a teenager'... I just don't get how she survived until the end... she was the weakest from that bunch. In a survival game where you have to fight monsters most of the time, the one who can't fight at all, survives till the end.... make it make sense

There were things I liked abt this novel, some characters, some plot parts and some of the black tower monsters. But there were more things that annoyed me honestly. Did I waste my time with this book? Mostly yes. (let's say... 75% wasted time) Would I recommend it? No. But people would read it bcs of the high rating anyway <<less

This is a really well written story! By around chapter 50 or so I was fully invested in the plot and I could not put it down. It takes a little bit of time to really get started but once it does, it just keeps going! I never felt bored even closer to the end of the book, and I feel like the story wrapped up very nicely. It wasn't dragged on for too long like some unlimited flow type stories are, so it's perfect for a casual reader of... more>> the genre like me lol

MC's personality isn't too engaging, he's pretty much your standard OP main character, but his ability having restrictions does make him a little more interesting. One thing that I noticed though is that some of the restrictions didn't even get used very often, like the magical girl line when using the parasol? He's supposed to shout magical girl transformation every time he uses the thing but I swear he only said it maybe twice in the whole novel, and he literally uses this parasol in EVERY chapter. I don't think ML even heard him say the phrase which made me a little sad lol

But yeah MC doesn't really go through too much actual character growth, he's kind of just chill and unbothered the entire book. He gets mildly embarrassed in a few scenes and says that he's sad at one point when a friend is revealed to have died, but that's basically it. He doesn't bat an eye at death and he's able to calmly solve his way out of any scenario. Basically, he's just a cool guy. His character could have used a little more development and actual emotion, especially since he was a librarian before all of this and not a military secret service dude like some other characters.

The romance is pretty lowkey, but the trust and love the two main leads have for each other is where the story shines. They take literally forever to actually confirm their relationship even after their past relationship as online friends is revealed, but it does make sense since their lives are literally constantly on the line from being pulled into life or death games. Not really the best scenario for a love confession. But even before their feelings are confirmed, I just loved the way they take care of each other and trust in each others abilities. They're always on equal ground with each other and they have this understanding of each other that goes so deep that they can pretty much read each others minds.

The s*xual tension in some scenes had me screaming too lol the abilities book really goes wild. Highly amused by the commentary in the notes of each ability Tang Mo gained, especially when it talked about ML. The book really is its own side character haha. Which on that note, loved the side characters in this story too! The kids weren't annoying and pretty much every side character with a significant amount of screen time grew on me like a weed. There wasn't that much actual character development but every character was pretty likeable.

Overall this satisfied me in terms of plot, characters, and relationship building. Only thing as many reviews mention is that the logic in some of the games makes no sense. Like some of the deductions MC was making truly did not add up and I just had to suspend my disbelief. It didn't actually subtract from the story though as I was mostly there for the character relationships, so I'm not deducting any points there, just something that made the book a little less than perfect.

Also shout out to this iconic moment where ML defies the cliche:

Spoiler

Tang Mo was originally leaning against the pillar to sleep with Fu Wenduo beside him. Fu Wenduo was covered with armour and not a single bit of skin was exposed. Suddenly, a head leaned on his shoulder. Fu Wenduo was surprised. The next second, he calmly stretched out a hand and pushed Tang Mo's face back.

Fu Wendou keep doing you lmao <<less

Reading the reviews and especially the one starting with: "Read this book. Do yourself a favor, drop every other book for the moment and just immerse yourself in the literary masterpiece that is this novel."

-made me do just that. But boy oh boy it felt like a hard read.

Theres a lot of potential in the setting, but its very one dimensional and things that are so complicated you need to have 200 iq to figure out whats going on, get solved by the MC just like that. Meanwhile making no... more>> sense to the reader.

Also his power system is very flatlined, he can just get more powers and his body grows stronger, but there's no real laying out a proper path to power or power progression besides just "steal ability" "body stronger than before".

If the author put more effort into creating character growth/progression it'd be much more engaging as the way he deals with enigma-level problems is just unconvincing. <<less

So this isn't a bad kind of bad. It's fine. Which is the problem. It's neither good or amazing nor terrible. The premise is understandable, the characters are nice enough. The MC may show the problem with this novel the most: he is just bland. Lacks any real personality. It may help if you want to project a little bit of yourself into him and it may be your coup of tea. It wasn't for me, still I pushed through for 184 chapters bc there wasn't anything offensively bad and... more>> it was a good read before going to bed. But with the length of this webnovel just being enough is not... well, enough. With this length there should be something to hook you in. Here it's neither characters, not the plot or the romance. ML was nice enough, had some good humor while being the strong and silent type. Still it felt like he was trying to romance a cardboard box, not another human being. <<less

started reading: December 5th, 2022.

I binge-read 220 chapters in like 4 days, (I'm having a break currently.), and it's actually what brought me back into novels. I had been a big wattpad stories fan in 2021 but then got out of that phase and began to lose motivation once I started reading more manga/manhwa/manhuas. But everyone on my social media platforms kept telling me to read it and that it was a masterpiece, so naturally, on one boring ass day I decided to start it. After reading about 1-2... more>> chapters I was beginning to lose interest bc I wasn't used to having to pay attention to the words and not like how I sometimes just looked at the art during webcomics. But thankfully I forced myself to read more and eventually got very interested at around chapter 4. After getting into around 10 chapters I began tossing and turning in my bed and occasionally throwing my phone across the room, and screaming into my pillow out of excitement. I absolutely love the "I was forced into a life-and-death survival games" type of trope. After reading orv and the trial games of life + others I was so interested in how the plot was going to fold out.

Getting to chapter 20 I was thinking "there's no way this novel is that good." and that it would probably have some random ass arc later that would ruin the plot, but even at chapter 220 everything was perfect.

The plot: Perfect

The writing: Perfect

The characters: Perfect

The romance: Perfect

The so-called "Tower Attack Games" and "Instances": Perfect.

If you have a picky-ass friend That only reads the best novels. Recommend this, even if they aren't into reading LGBT romance, make them read it!!!

If I had to say 1 thing I didn't necessarily like about the novel, I would say the devils tango chapter ykyk.

And here's why:

Although I don't usually give a sh*t about s*x in any romance novel, The chapter MC and ML "did it" was kinda, of disappointing..??

it kinda went like

*pushed onto the bed and starts kissing*

and then the next sentence said something like/indicating that it was over and they had somehow done it.

I usually don't give a fck if the s*x scene is short but in this novel, I was kinda disappointed.
Spoiler

Only because all the way from when the MC and ML met on the game bridge, to their first meeting irl, That one time the MC used one of his abilitys that needed him to touch ML intimately to see what his ability was, and all the games and sh*t they went through, to then the "clock of truth" telling them that to steal mls ability MC had to do it with him, carried so much sexual/romantic tension that I assumed when they did it all the tension the readers were feeling would be wrapped up. But as I said earlier the way it was written was like any other common sentence in the novel. Like "MC silently shut the door, hopped into bed, and fell asleep." felt exactly like the s*x scene. It was so brief and casual. It took me a second to realize and made me blurt out "THEY FINALLY DID IT??" which made me reread the chapter just to make sure I wasn't hallucinating LOL.

[collapse]

But I honestly didn't mind that much about the devil's tango chapter bc the plot and story were already enough for me to be interested.

Overall a very great read, that brought me back into web novels :) <<less

To be honest I really liked this novel! I can agree that the complicity of it gets a bit boring and you just wanna skip over but trust me you don’t miss much. Sure the games are interesting and may give some big plot points but it’s usually what comes after!

Pro tip about reading this novel! if you don’t like the current translation you can go to the way back machine and find the old translator. Their website probably was shut down but you can definitely find their page on... more>> way back machine and read ALL chapters there. It is also MTL but I personally think it was cleaned up nicely. (There are still typos and like 3 chapters in a row the word dice was written as die but you don’t have to wait for updates so there’s that!!)

if you’re wondering about romance, it is slow... like they kinda get somewhere in the 150+ chapters. Not that you feel disappointed that it isn’t sooner, because it feels normal that the progress is slow. It’s kinda weird, the pacing of this is pretty good so you don’t fret over the slow burn. Although there is a cliche like “we get somewhere but get interrupted before we get anywhere”.

Some said how MC is too op or just over the top with his smartness but to me it isn’t true. First of all, his ability is op but clearly he has major restrictions and the props he gets are the ones he gets fairly. And as black tower said

luck is a type of strength

Ding Dong! November 15th, 2017. The Earth Is Online!

Oh my God. Okay. Breathe In, Breathe Out.

How to start this review?

... more>> The Earth is Online is a book that will definitely stay on my brain for a long period of time. The plot is incredibly rich and I can't count how many times it blew my mind. The clever writing is outstanding.

This is not the first story I read by this author, I once read a manhua based in one of her novels - I wasn't a big fan. This book, however, has me shower the author with praises. The biggest compliment I can give Mo Chen Huan is that she's terribly smart.

Each character in this book is incredibly smart (some more than others but even the ones considered to be 's*upid' aren't really that s*upid) so for the writer to be able to write them... wow.

This book is an unlimited flow apocalypse novel where players (humans) are forced to play games agaisn't the Black Towers and their monsters. Each game is complex and we follow Tang Mo through his adventures. He is an extremely smart character (who gets even smarter along the novel) but he is not overpowering. None of the main characters are op. They are strong, yes, especially the love interest, but they aren't undefeatable and they struggle a lot agaisnt certain opponents.

The Black Tower is a phenomenon that appeared on Earth and all players must attack it. There are 7 attack floors which means there are 7 levels of tower attack games. However, these aren't the only games. There are various types of black towers games, all of which have different difficulty levels. It's super interesting to see these differences and watch the players evolve. What was in the beginning of the book terrifying for them wasn't more than a small anoyance later on. I won't delve more into this since this is a spoiler-free review.

This isn't a book that is to be read lightly, it is a book where you must pay attention in order to understand what's going on.

Don't do it like me - oftentimes I read it from 11pm to 3am so I had to re-read some scenes in order to get it. Tang Mo often ends up explaining his thought process to other characters (so the reader ends up having an explanation) but I find it a lot of fun to follow the character's thoughts as they try to solve things.

Now, as for the main couple, if you're in it for their relationship I'll have you know this is a slow burn. There's some pining and tons of ust but things don't truly develop until the last few 50 or so chapters. There's around 120-130 chapters with little to no romantic development between them.

The story is plot heavy and it is the main focus.

However, futang are one of my fav cps ever.

They have this tacit understanding that is constantly highlighted, they truly care for each other and they work perfectly together. Their tacit understanding even reflects in how they approach their feelings towards each other.

They're not one of those overly sweet couples but their eye contact moments and overall dynamic has me rolling around my bed giggling. They're great.

One thing I really like about this book is that you learn to love them individually and then as a couple. Trust me, you will adore the love insteret not only because of his realtionship with the main character but because he is such a special and charming person.

Overall, The Earth Is Online is an apocalypse survival novel with an incredible complexity of games and a side of slow burn romance. Its characters are super interesting and valuable, not only the MC and ml, but including the side characters. Each side character has such an important role and it's so interesting to watch it develop. This doesn't really happen until the 100th chapter or so but from that point onwards both new and old side characters play very important roles.

About the rating: this is a clear 9/10 for me. However, novel updates doesn't allow half stars (4.5 stars in this case) so 5 stars it is ^^

I don't know what more to say about this, I really don't. Just... READ IT. If you're wondering whether or not it is worth 240 chapters + 5 extras - it is. I spent almost a month reading it and I do not regret a single second. It was so worth it. Now excuse me as I go and try to re-grow my fried braincells ~ <<less
