The Extra’s Academy Survival Guide

Description

I ended up transmigrating as a third-rate extra in a game I like, but worst of all this character has already fallen and been disowned.

I have no ambitions. I just want to graduate, but the world won’t let me.

Yet another transported into a game possessing a third rate villain. But this time it is actually very good. The MC is a resourceful tactician rather than someone who uses brute force to defeat enemies, his insistence on following the original timeline may be frustrating at first (even if I understand the need for it) but it gets better later on. If I had to say it started by the end of act 2 when MC starts feeling less like a machine and starts to get emotionally invested. In addition,... more>> the story's attention to detail is incredible in how several pieces of information that was mentioned early in the story start to make sense (my favorite has to be the background of the original Ed Rothstaylor) and how the existence of the MC is causing a butterfly effect. The 3 main heroines are also portrayed really well, they don't fall in love just because of some simple reason but rather because of how they find comfort in his presence in each of their own way. Author has also managed to convey a message he wants to and implementing it in the story well. Several of the chapters near the end feels like an anti-su*cide lesson but it was incorporated so well that it enhances the story rather than hinder it.

If I have a complaint it has to be
Spoiler

Lucy not getting even a kiss even after her side story has finished, MC hasn't even made clear to himself as to what kind of a relationship she has with Lucy. In comparison, Lortel and Yennekar are someone he already sees as a lover, had kissed MC before the main story was completed and even gone as far as having s*x with them in their side stories. I just hope Lucy gets more focus in future side stories and finally be clear about their relationship. Another one is that Clarice gets sidelined after Act 3, I feel like there was more that can be done about her character rather than just being constantly used as a political power move

An absolutely beautiful story. I really enjoyed reading this and was able to complete it thankfully. I had lost hope when it got taken by Yonder. But a kind soul uploaded pdf of screenshots of Yonder's pages till the side stories.

and maybe it's still there.

Anyway story was quite consistent and finished up quite nicely. Not too overly dense MC and though a harem I still liked the way each relationship developed. It didn't feel forced and the characters felt alive. I usually root for a single girl if I read a harem but this story I couldn't really do that since all the 3 girls seem quite lovable to me in their own way.

Stroy ended with all the plot point properly addressed.

Spoiler

Was quite surprised with the ending Great sage got and quite pleasant twist too

[collapse]

The one thing I like about this novel was that it stayed true to it's goal and that was 'Surviving". The MC not only maintained that goal but also taught everyone else around him on how important it is to survive even if everything feels hopeless and you feel killing yourself will be better. How his attitude affected those around him
Spoiler

even his enemy like the great sage

[collapse]
felt quite good.

Spoiler

I also liked the fact the final battle which was supposed to be a stage for the original protagonist was actually left for him and the MC had his own stage, not him taking the original MC's limelight.

This felt new compared to all Ohh I'm trying to be a side character but ended up defeating the main Boss trope.

[collapse]

The side stories were quite well written and smoothened out all his main relationships. I really liked Lucy's Side story. Well thought out and really well written.

Spoiler

I really liked the changes in Lucy and the side story explored a world in which Ed is dead and the Lucy who never lost Ed met the Lucy who lost him. The differences between them and how the Lucy's from that world cried in the embrace of original world's Lucy really touched me.

[collapse]

Overall, I'll say a very good read. A bit on the short side but doesn't feel that rushed. Good story, good message and good characters. 5 stars. Better than most of the stories coming out right now. <<less

Pretty meh. It doesn't do anything so bad to make me drop it, but there's lots of bad writing habbits.

  • Mountains of useless exposition
  • Weird disorienting back and forth time skips
  • Dense male protagonist plus harem
So the useless exposition. There are massive chunks of text that serves no real purpose. The author just threw it in there because he wanted to. The game the story is based on is divided up into multiple acts. Each act has a boss. The protagonist, is aware of walkthroughs for each boss. The author posts these before... more>> an upcoming boss fight. They are closer to a spoiler than anything I'm interested in reading.

The time skips are just done really poorly. You'll have an upcoming event, then it skips forward to after the event and they don't tell you they've done that for like half the chapter when you finally start putting all the weird information together. Then they go back and do the event. Good timeskips will inform you that they happened.

Final criticism is self explanatory. I'm a guy, I can appreciate a harem, but in a novel, they just add a lot of useless exposition to the story. I'd rather the protagonist just get a girlfriend so we don't have to play this game having two girls bending over backwards to get the male protagonist's attention while not getting it. <<less

As always, this is an interesting premise. What I enjoy about this novel, is one of the facts that most of the "negative" reviews mention. (Also, these negative reviews usually never read the chapters past 20, which shouldn't even warrant a review yet.)

(If you want to read the actual review, skip this part) TLDR: The MC is forced to interact with the story even though he doesn't want to, because himself wanting to survive is a variable in itself that will fundamentally change the story,... more>> even though he doesn't want it to. This makes the novel more realistic, as it is true that it would be impossible for him to try to survive without interacting with the story.

More thorough review:

Anyways the fact I am talking about is that the MC messes up the story-line. Quite early on the MC says that he doesn't want to interact with the story-line at all, so he always knows what is going to happen, as it is a huge advantage for him. However, as time passes, there is a huge variable, which is himself. It realistically makes sense, there is nothing he can do about the variable as he wants to survive, which is what makes the story interesting.

At first, he wants no interaction what-so-ever with anything that has to do with the story. When the MC realizes this is impossible, he changes his perspective. He realizes that he has to interact with the story to try to keep it on track, as much as possible. It won't be exactly the same, but close enough that he can somewhat guess the events that will happen.

Spoiler (Why he ends up getting even further tangled into the story-line) :

Spoiler

Eventually, he goes even further and completely derails the story-line himself, due to his own emotions and feelings of guilt. At this point in the novel he would surely feel like the people around him are real people, not just characters that are set to live or die, which is why he ends up making a choice based on this. For the first time in the novel he tries to change the story, even if it's just subtly, because he doesn't want someone to die.

Spoiler (The choice he makes which backs this up) :

Spoiler

In the story, Adele is destined to die. Ed doesn't go out of his way to save her, but gives her a warning that she is about to die. I see this as character development, he feels that the people around him shouldn't just die because they were destined to in the novel.

[collapse]
[collapse]

That was quite a rant, but necessary. In my opinion it's one of the strongest points in the story which makes it a bit more realistic. Another part I enjoy is the fact that the MC doesn't seem to be "the best" at anything, but finds out what he is talented at and works with that. He doesn't win a fight by just being the strongest or most talented, but by tactics and remembering the fighting patterns from the games. He uses a variety of the different mechanics (Magical engineering, Magic, Spirits, Knowledge etc.) all to his advantage to help him out.

This novel is almost a 5/5 for me, except there's a few cons that drag it down quite a bit... So here comes the cons of this novel.

The Harem. Personally I despise harems, which is rough in the Webnovel world. I hate it when the MC is going to end up with more than 1 romantic partner, but so be it. Most of the girls that interact with MC ends up getting interested in him, some more interestingly and realistically (Lucy / Yennekar), while some more randomly in dumb ways (Yennekar's friend who I don't even remember the name of / The Saint). It's kind of frustrating. #TeamYen, also Lortel is so annoying. Also the MC acts really dense, which is quite annoying, though I do believe it might be because of his past life before this world.

The story seems short? Apparently there's only 250 chapters in the main story, but I am only at chapter 144, which is still below act 10. If I remember correctly, the game had 40-50 acts so how its gonna close out the story in 106 more chapters will be interesting. I would like a longer story personally but I'll have to see how it ends off. <<less

It's an academy action novel. Either this is a guilty pleasure for you (like me) or it's not.

Starts off fairly generic in it's concept (transmigrated into a 3rd rate villain, hard working MC, academy setting, etc...) But has some fun elements in it, more than most of these type of novels at least.

I dug the whole survival element of it. MC is forced to live in the forest after being kicked out, and watching him grow and adapt as a survivalist is fairly satisfying. He's a pretty likable MC overall,... more>> can't say that about most of the cast unfortunately.

I appreciated MCs attitude for the most part in the beginning. So many of these novels start off with MC going 'I can't intervene in the plot!' only to make a s*upid mistake immediately (exposing secret information from future plot by accident is a common one) thus drawing needless attention. Afterwards they have the realization way too late that it's impossible not to effect anything and they should just control the plot.

I generally hate this and wish novels would just skip this part entirely.

Thankfully with this MC I at least believed he really does not want to get involved with the plot and he avoids making dumb mistakes (for the most part). He tries fairly hard to stay away from people and keeps as low a profile as possible. Living far from everybody else and avoiding talking with them.

Still pretty s*upid that he thinks he somehow can avoid effecting the plot but at least he goes about it in a much more believable way than I've seen before.

Seeing him grow while trying so hard to survive in nature made me genuinely root for him that his plan can work.

The problem is, since author decided not to have MC force himself into the plot were gonna every heroine forcibly insert herself into MCs plot!!

Yep, every female character through no real reason finds herself in MCs orbit thinking 'he's interesting!'. This ranges from just showing up at his camp randomly like a wild pokemon to becoming obsessed with him after a 2 minute conversation.

One is especially bad since she pretty much becomes a stalker who endlessly monologues to herself about MC and his intentions, while having mental issues herself ('benevolent princess' my as*).

There's some likable characters but overall most of them are annoying.

In addition the whole hate for the MC because of the character who's body he took over feels so overblown... Most people are just a**holes to him because of rumors and take way too long to have a change in opinion that a real person would. They all just come off as some of the shallowest characters I've read in a while.

By the time most of them realize he's good and change opinions about him I just thought 'f*** them'. <<less

If this is your first novel in this genre sure you maybe can say this want is so intresting & perfect blalalala

But for those already atleast familiar with this kind of genre honestly it's boring and how our MC himself looks like he don't prepare anything at all for a guy who want for the plot follow like what he already know and relationship between characters. Oh yeah he the guy who don't wanna be inside that plot yet he still happened to be chatting with those characters and even... more>> know that he not even prepare anything. Gosh what a fools and unreliable he is. He full of contradiction

Looks he say in early chapters how he wanna get scholarship cause welp nobody pay his tuition yet went there is joint operation where he is supposed to show his skill what did he do? Forfeit! Cause why he gonna fight the supposed original fMC. <<less

It's really not THAT special. What I suspect most weebs are praising this for is the MC not being a pushover and actually saying no to women GIGACHAD Holy but it turns out he says no to mostly everything just for the sake of that alone, and is incredibly dense when he's not being deliberately obtuse, which from me elicits the same reaction other soy MCs would get, so it's really not that much different in terms of behavior as people are saying -- the end result is the same.... more>> An MC that reacts coldly to those around him or just ignores them altogether.

Death March already did this and that was a cuck heaven. This one's not quite there yet since it hasn't been 10+ volumes at this point and the character might actually evolve as time goes on, but I haven't read the raws so it has yet to be seen.

Oh yeah and the translators are paywalling like 10 chapters so you're never going to be caught up without paying. Just go read the raws with mtl, that way you can also find out whether or not it's worth looking forward to the translated chapters in the first place <<less

don't even bother with the translation here, get it on Anna's archive or vnmeido, they have the official translations

anyways this falls on to the same trope of MC getting isekaid into a game and wanting to follow the storyline but fails + trying to not get involved even though him being there already messed up the story. Yeah its cliche but I really liked the butterfly effects it had, here's some examples

I may have yapped a little

Spoiler

at the start, because MC met one of the heroines at his camp in the woods, because of it the girl obliterated the OG MC in the joint competition between students becaude she made a contract with the high rank spirit residing there where she normally wouldn't go anywhere close, causing yennekar's act to happen a month earlier,

lastly, during mc's arc of going back to his family to be reinstated after getting disowned at the start of the story, where princess penia was the one advocating for it. Later on Princess penia realizes her mistake, seeing that MC became a a better person, like a different version entirely🤔, this was also the reason why she didn't run of student council position where after it, she becomes a good support to get rid of Mc's father, one of the bosses, but because of all of this, she instead stops trying to being wary of Mc's family, specifically his father, causing his father to finish his research on the evil god which was supposed to happen so much later and become a boss when MC came back to the family's house. And of course, MC has to get involved in the storyline, of course because OG MC wasn't able to get any exp since he was stuck at the school, MC chose to become a boss fight to replace his father's position

[collapse]

, considering that the game he fell into has dark souls difficulty, the one thing I really liked was that while the MC getting involved in the storyline even though he shouldn't, he starts learning a lot about stuff he would normally never learn while playing through the game (he's played the game alot, it's his favorite game for another reason related to his backstory which unfortunately wasn't that explored to), stuff about why yennekar became a boss, why Lazy Lucy was lazy, why lortel was greedy, why the saint completely turned around her personality which all the players didn't know why, and especially the last arc, which was insane, can't talk about it without spoiling a good chunk of the ending so be warned

Spoiler

The reason why he was transported into the game, it's not a game, it's another world, someone just made it into a game, in Earth, the reason why she was transported or she transported herself into earth and created the game was because she transported MC into his world,

skip this since I just want to explain why, anyways a hundred years ago in that other world, Silvenia who is that someone peeked into the infinite branches of the future, but it all ended at a cliff point, the reason why she dissappeared which players never knew was because she stopped her body in time prison, after making a device that is a source of magic powers since she can't put time prison on herself as it will stop the flow of magic power and breaking the spell, she counted the amount of magic needed to last so that it runs out and breaks the time prison spell just before that end point but she turned insane because she was conscious for all of those years (the magic she used was special as it broke the providence of the world that only God could interfere with the more a person knew about it, the more they could go insane) and became a boss WHILE the final boss fight is happening, she's could easily defeat that final boss too, which the MC has spent the entire novel preparing for, only reason they were alive was because Silvenia regained her reason, after killing a ton of teachers and students though anyways because she transported MC into the world, the cliff point dissappeared and MC asked Silvenia to go to his world and protect it too since his soul was gone I forgot but it would be bad for the world if a soul was missing.

also the game she created was the normal cliff point, with all the different branches of the timeline, one where OG MC defeated the final boss and all the other way he failed, that's why the game was so good, Silvenia was a shut in game dev

[collapse]

It's an isekai trope, had the same boring plot of trying to stay away from the storyline but fails to do so, but that was just the start, the MC took responsibility of it and became so much more involved, while also making it so that the OG MC gets strong enough to clear the game, which I really hate cause OG MC was literally the only one able to defeat the final boss because of his skill, which MC can't steal or copy, it's like an anchor stopping our MC from his plans of not getting involved, I really hate this but the game is basically dark souls specifically made for the OG MC so can't do anything about that.

oh yeah, don't read this if you don't like harem and romance with a dense protag, unless you're willing to read until to the side stories where things start to get steamy with the heroines

Spoiler

MC had s*x with 2 of the heroines, it wasn't skipped too

[collapse]

It has the flaws of a normal isekaid into a game/novel but it does it really well, good read to pass the time, ain't one of the best novels but it's definitely near it for me, at least for the genre <<less

Firstly, DO NOT READ MAID SIDE STORY IT WILL RUIN THE ENDING FOR YOU

After it got taken down from reaperscans, I finished the rest of the story on Yonder. RIP to both services btw. Anyways, one of my first WebNovel and one of my favorites. It very much hit the romantic, fantasy, and academy notes I wanted. A lot of the details are messy since I’m writing this more than a year after I finished reading. Or at least when I thought I did. I finished reading at the second... more>> to last Lucy side story chapter because I thought it ended the story perfectly with what she says to her Gramps. I come to find out about a month ago five more chapters were released afterward. Since yonder shut down I had to read it on Wattpad. I eventually got enough coin to read them. Very disappointed. If you are planning on reading this, the story and experience are amazing just do not read the Maid side story. It’ll just make you annoyed that either the translators or author stopped caring about the story. Btw this is cause the maid arc is unfinished with only four chapters idk if there’s more. I have to say though I don’t regret reading this story at all even if I ruined the ending by being curious. Thank you author and all translators involved. What a wonderful story. <<less

straight to the point, one of the best harem novels. At first I really hated the harem genre, but since reading this novel, I changed my mind and am grateful to have found this novel. Truly one of the novels of all time. I gotta hand it to the author, he managed to tie the loose-ends and give a satisfactory ending for the three girls. All in all this was a good written story but some of the girls were definetly not required to be part of the story, so in the end its a 4.2.

This is pretty basic academy isekai story, but it's well-executed. It's a little weaker earlier on with more focus on the survival aspects as the MC creates a shelter in the woods after becoming homeless, and with the MC's initial focus on not changing the storyline, but there is much less focus on these aspects later on. There is a harem, but fortunately it is small and the romantic interests are interesting characters who are well-developed. The plot is tight and cohesive, and the side stories do a good job... more>> of fleshing out the characters' relationships after the main plot is over. The story is overall nothing amazing, but it execute a typical premise better than the vast majority of stories out there. Overall it's worth a read.

Edit: Also, since the links aren't listed here, I do want to let people know that the official English publication is available on the mobile app Yonder. You do have to pay, but at this time Yong Library's unofficial translation also charges for the later chapters, so if you're going to pay someone then you might as well pay Yonder, at the very least for those specific chapters, as they are owned by Naver, the original Korean publisher. The translation is complete on Yonder with the exception of side story chapter 43. The side stories don't appear to be complete in the original Korean as the author is busy working on his latest novel right now. <<less

Overall it was a satisfying binge which plays its strengths well by limiting the scope of world building to focus on fleshing out the characters.

It follows a predictable overarching storyline yet contains twists within the story where you can’t help but get invested.

The main story wraps up tidily yet the emotional attachment to the cast carry over to the side stories, effectively expanding the scope of the story post-completion. I’ll for sure be periodically returning to catch up on the side stories of our lovable troupe!

The main premise of living in the forest quickly becomes obsolete (it could've been resolved much earlier if MC actually used his brain), but author drags it still with "I have to do it, OKAY?!" reasoning. When it was literally forced to end, the topic was still brought up like something out-of-this-world special as if it isn't just a clickbaity gimmick for an extremely generic novel. In other words, it is a massive pile of "Making a big deal out of nothing".

Other than living conditions of the main character there... more>> is nothing even to describe, just another academy story. I don't mind these, but...

There was a semblance of a story for a while. However, focus shifted to harem. The main heroine author chose turned out to be a god-awful piece of vomit-inducing "She is nice and kind and good and pretty and she loves me very much!!!!!!", much blander than the other love interests. The extent of chemistry she has with MC is that "She has nothing going on in her life so with nothing but free time she just always spends it with him".

Reading this "Romance" felt utterly repulsive, and this novel didn't have much going for it in the first place, so I stopped.

Thinking back, at first it wasn't bad enough to say that my time was wasted, so I would recommend you to try it yourself and drop at the first iffy moment. <<less

The reincarnated as an extra in a video game is a pretty prevalent subgenre in the korean isekai space. What I thought would be a tr*shy binge turned out to be one of the most poignant series I have read.

The early chapters are exactly how you imagine a series like this to be. MC wows everyone as he manages to perform better than expected and slowly climb to the top. Meanwhile he starts to woo many of the heroines. The writing isn't too bad so it's a fun binge on... more>> a bored day.

Halfway through the series, however, there's a noticeable shift in both tone and writing quality. The arcs past this point put the series from a 3.5/5 to a 5/5.

One of the strongest point of this series is the way the author build its climax. The way they weave in flashbacks into a battle or the way they depict scenes of struggle as characters grit their teeth to fight is genuinely masterclass. And to finish the emotionally impactful arc, they slowly ease readers in as characters sit down and slow enjoy the melancholic scene. This is an author who knows how to satisfyingly start and finish a story. <<less

Agreeing with cakekid, the novel gets really good and starts to develop once you get in deep and we get some hints as to why our MC is the way he is, so to start with our mc:

He is very hard working, perceptive and rational and that gets emphasized throughout the novel because he's living by tooth and nail everyday. He has to ensure that he gets his daily necessities while also managing his school grades AND getting stronger both physical and his magic power.

Now his goal on trying to... more>> make progress the story without changes gets twisted hence the butterfly effect, at first it might come off as cliché (which it is) and annoying but what I think it becomes more as nothing ever goes the way you plan it and there we see how our MC improvises on it and still progress despite variables.

Now for his romantic interests, our MC isn't really that dense because he is aware of the girls that are interested in him (at least the ones that try to actively reach out to him) but he's too busy trying to survive, get stronger and save the world, however he does have his dense moments but at least it's understandable.

Now as for the harem I'll elaborate,
Spoiler

he really only ends up with 3 girls with 1 being platonic

[collapse]
and it's not the main focus so you don't have to be worried too much about this aspect.

Also this is completely translated for those who are looking along with the side stories, I won't say who or where but just keep looking and you'll find it. <<less

This book imo is easily top 3 of the couple hundred books I have read so far.

However the book has been dropped and picked up by Yong library and I've realized no one edits there chapters, like at all. Many times have female characters been called males and the exact same to the males.

They've butchered names of the MC and others multiple times so far to the point I thought it was a new character added to the scene.

There's other small issues in the mix also but those were the... more>> main issues I've seen so far and I even checked in the chapters in the 60's and it's still there.

I'm hoping they can go back to the earlier chapters with and editor and fix it cause this book is honestly one of the greatest but the issues that's been having is too frequent for me to read. <<less

I have read a lot of Academy web novels this year and I have to say that this is one of the best. The plot of the Story wasn't anything new at the beginning of the Story, around act 4/5 the Story starts taking a whole different turn (Good way). [/The arc with the Saint was soo good. It explored Ed as a character and showed how he would never give up] About the Harem. It was really well done. Each girl were perfectly balanced and all had they're one personality, simply can't hate them.

This trope of transmigrated into a game is on the rise for Korean novels, but not all of them stuck for me. At least, until this one.

When we have the overpowered main character or sus power system, this novel is not like that. Our main, Ed Rosetail, really took his time to become strong by learning everything that he can learn. We don't get someone who suddenly levels up, but we can look to a person trying his best to survive everyday life as an outcast.

I think other characters are... more>> also very well done too. We get to see the everyday life of literal magical students with fantastical power system who have the power to obliterate everything, but also we see they are students trying to navigate their academic life. Of course, each of them has their own past and problems, which I think is one of many aspects left untouched by many authors.

I don't like to spoil here, but, you'll feel some camaraderie by reading this novel. It really showed each person has their own way in seeing the world and not everyone may have the same sentiment. Because of that, there were some skirmishes here and there, the angst is very real, and you'll found yourself wishing someone need to rewind back time to correct everything.

Of course, for the plot, I am fascinated by the author's way of giving premonition. It keeps me waiting for another chapter and see what happen next.

Spoiler

Every character in this novel has a certain role in the original game.

For our main character, the sensational Ed Rosetail, I really develop a very liking towards him. As the story progressed, Ed, seemingly too attached to maintain the original storyline, became more lenient and even acknowledging that the story has changed (kinda after Act 2 completed). Thus, he tried so hard to do what he can do, because ultimately, he is the main source of the story steering away from the original plotline.

While I am drawn to the portrayal of our from-zero-to-hero Ed, what I really like about this novel is the world building and how the events are interrelated with each other. Some may argue that author is that tell-not-show, I believe that it is only in certain part.

The author tries to correlate the world as seen the game and as experienced in reality. Both of those are the same, yet also different. What makes it amazing is because you can get the feel how the story should flow, but you always get this anxiety-inducing moments where the story just suddenly halt and move in unpredictable way.

Just so for this topic, I do not mind the harem here because it is just as comedic as it is a certainty due to how the events happened. Sure, some of them may be a little bit overbearing but it shows how the author tried to make each characters, especially the main girls, not as two-dimensional.

Spoiler

Though I kinda resent why Ed didn't reciprocate their feelings because it will become much more exhilarating... I suppose :P

Anyway, with that being said, I think this novel is a very good read that, if stuck to you, you'll develop a liking towards our gorgeous blond boy living alone on the northern forest. <<less
