im going to reread this. For the third time.

very nice characters, no insipid or bland and flat. All round, some shows improvements while others are better left alone. This is one of the few danmei I've read that other characters, not the protagonist or antagonists, affects the story so much.

Reasons to read:

  1. Many hidden lessons in life, since there are a lot of issues that gets resolved.
  2. Very likable MC. At first, ML was just good but after he matured he was gold. Very nice Character progression.
  3. Heavy read, emotional and educational? Or inspiring. Idk what word to use just know that its time consuming and worth while.
  4. Many stuffs were implied, hidden in context so its making me anxious reading this coz what if I missed something? Really improves your reading comprehension if you're not biased.
  5. WWX.

The Best-EST BL of all-time !!!

Personally, Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, also known as The Founder of Diabolism (GoDC/FoD), is my first ever chinese BL novel I have read.

On this note, I have to second what @Akime yuko reviewed. I agree 💯 with EVERYTHING he/she wrote in his/her review! Trust me, I did mentally bash my tardy self for not having discovered this gem of a BL beforehand. What a loss! I was literally living under the rocks, undoubtedly. Cause it was and is thanks to FoD/GoDC novel that I also... more>> discovered the existence of NU. Before then, I never knew the existence of chinese novels, not to mention ones of such grandeur.

It was literally a whole new world that opened up in front of me, and since then, I was undoubtedly a goner - lost in a new world of obsessive reading! Anyways, no matter however much I may say is not enough to express exactly how much I appreciate this novel after the unfulfilled experience with the censored bromance in the drama!

I am forever grateful to have discovered the existence of the novel thanks to the comment section of its serialised drama - The Untamed, ah!

To think the censored bromance which still shone so brilliantly and gave hope of a possible BL, thanks to the mind-blowing actors and the entire filming team and staff, was actually really a BL at the core of its novel entirety, mamma mia!

And my goodness, was this BL novel not even more mind-blowing than I could have even ever thought, hoped or anticipated!

A true, genuine chef's kiss for a voracious reader like me! Intense suspense, political intrigue and selfless love amongst many more! What a rollercoaster read it was, and yet SO ADDICTING!

To think I could also visualise the novel, as if a film was playing right in my mind thanks to the awesome-beyond-words actors and serialised drama, he he! A definite win, no doubt 💯! I really LOVE this novel. There may be other amazing BL novels that I have read after GoDC, but none can replace this one! Absolutely agree 💯 with a note of Exiled Rebels Scanlations, that there is no point in trying to search for a novel with similar storyline as GoDC, cause there simply exists no novel with the caliber of GoDC!

It's literally a novel that's one in a gazillion! This is what I call a gem of a read!

Whether it is in terms of storyline setting and build-up, character setting and build-up or the development of both throughout the novel, it is one of the best-EST BL on NU.

That is to say, since I had already watched The Untamed, I cared only about the flashbacks of WangXian. I could do without the lengthy flashbacks of the other characters. But yes, I will admit that every scene, including those "I-don't-care-much-about" flashbacks, paved the pathway for the novel thoroughly. Each scene in the novel is such a well-constructed add-on that builds up and develops the novel's world, storyline and characters. In addition, I am utterly thankful and grateful @Exiled Rebels Scanlations (ExR) for translating this novel. I can't express enough to say how sad and angry I was when ExR had to undergo that translation copyright whatsoever issue back then.

No matter what, for me, the English translation credits of GoDC goes solely to Exiled Rebels Scanlations. Be it when I first read GoDC @ExR back in 2019 or now, only the translation by ExR is what I recognise and acknowledge.

The issues surrounding this is such a heart-wrenching event that made countless readers of GoDC, like me, not being able to read the translation of GoDC @ExR anymore, including the future readers.

Such a setback was literally like throwing a spanner in the works! Not to mention, the two years' worth of precious efforts and selfless hard work of ExR in translating GoDC painstakingly was wasted and made for naught because of those issues and those whoever-they-are ingrates who were related to that issue. This is something that can never be forgotten or forgiven!

Nevertheless! This novel is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

If you can google it and read it online, go ahead! You won't regret reading this gem of a novel. Hope all readers, old and new, of GoDC have a blissful time reading this novel - as much as I did and still do.

For one, I am still as obsessed with The Untamed and this novel in 2022 as I was back in 2019. It may have been three years since I first stumbled upon the drama and read the novel, but this is one of my evergreen and favourite-EST BL novels - which, no matter however many times I re-binge-watch the drama and/or re-read the novel, both will never get old! Ever golden both will remain!

I avoided this novel for the longest time because of its incredible popularity, scared that I'll go in with too many expectations and be let down.

But this time around, I decided to go in blind and just let myself enjoy it page by page without worrying about the what-ifs and damn lmao. I can see why it's so loved. I liked the villains as much as I liked the protagonists because god, I am such a hoe for morally grey characters.

Despite all its tragedies, I didn't feel much sadness until chapter 110. When Jiang Cheng confessed his secret? That just did me in. Tears flooded out and suddenly everything was painful.

I don't get all the glowing reviews. MC is apparently a good guy necromancer who somehow got an undeserved bad rep by literally everyone in the world. Allegedly did mass slaughter yet is now shown to be willing to sacrifice himself to save his enemies (ugh). The mystery solving parts were nice but there is not enough of them.

It's the best thing I've ever read in my entire life.

No exaggeration...

At the beginning of the work we meet a character who is said to be the villain, as we read, we realize that he is not what the extras describe him. He's supposed to be the terrible Yiling Laozu, the founder of demonic cultivation (the name gives a little fear to the unknown, something we change our minds as we read), instead he's not evil at all as the stories say.

The plot is amazing, captivating, full of mysteries and... more>> we ask ourselves questions all the time. He's supposed to be the villain, but apparently he's not. The guy he says is his enemy doesn't seem to treat him like he's the enemy, and he's still helping him, why? What happened to him that he died? Who is responsible for the new deaths on the comeback? There were some questions I asked when I started reading the novel, and each answer given is more surprising than the other.

Wei Wuxian is the most charismatic protagonist you will meet in your life, his joy is captivating, in addition to being extremely intelligent without losing his humility, I would say that the most intelligent character in the novel and I think not all readers can see that, he it's just AWESOME, with all the letters in capslock, he was the reason I read and kept reading, I'll never find a protagonist as fun, kind, intelligent and selfless as he is... and Lan Wangji... I could pass by hours writing about Lan Wangji and it wouldn't be enough to express how much I love him and think he's amazing, he's the perfect match everyone hopes to have, a man with a priceless sense of justice and who gives himself body and soul to that one I love them so much, the story is perfect thanks to them, I just thank Mo Xiang Tong Xiu for writing this amazing work that made me cry a lot, laugh and wish to have a relationship like the WangXian. <<less

Absolutely amazing. My all time favorite *chef's kiss*

I loved every moment of this journey that the author takes us.

The writing can get a little bit confusing with the time switches at first, but it is done on purpose and I absolutely love the slow reveal of WWX and LWJ's past.

... more>> I get so invested into the side stories, and the mystery behind everything!! It's so fun to discover and then see how the relationship progresses.

And I love how everyone is written with so much emotion, and how you can see each character react or think based off of those emotions. I love how you can definitely see why the MC does what he does over time. The painting of a villain that does not seem like what it seems.

Oh and especially when you see the depth of the ML's love for MC, it is so heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. I love how the author can make me feel so many emotions from this novel.

I LOVE the ending. It's wrapped up in the way where there is mystery but also it feels absolutely satisfying to ponder and think about. And it kind of gives a little leeway to think about what possible trails and tribulations MC and the ML will go through in the future.

This story is an absolute gem. And I also highly recommend the audio drama because it follows the novel really well, and the VAs are absolutely amazing and talented. <<less

This is a reasonably good novel and one of the better ones out there. I loved about 3/4 of it. There were always plot holes and it's more style over substance all along but it was still quite a good read. But the last 1/4 where it gets too much into the final conspiracy, the plot holes become too big to ignore and the ending s**ked big time. Maybe, the writer was being too ambitious. Very interesting characters but overall, just OK as a whole.

So I completed this book like ig....I don't remember honestly but it feels like a long time ago. This is the kind of book which you can't let go even if you finished it. I still cry over the characters everyday (almost) and I never fail to read fanfics for keeping my restless heart calm. The characters are beautiful. In this book you really can't judge the characters without knowing their full story. One thing I find in this book fascinating is that I can't hate any character (except Wen... more>> Chao and maid side chick lol. They deserve all the hate tbh).

I don't hate Jin Guangyao but I don't like him either. In simple words I... am neutral towards him. Jiang Cheng is my misunderstood little cinnamon roll (he loves Wei wuxian and wants to protect his brother but he couldn't.) I feel a little pity towards Xue Yang, if only he had received love before he went over to the Darkside he wouldn't have done whatever he did (for which I still don't forgive him. He still is an ass for doing that to Xiao xingcheng). A Qing is the sweetest little thing. Jiang Yanli is my dream sister and she doesn't deserve death. Wen Ning and Wen Qing are the best and I really wanted them to live.

One person I don't really like in the story is Yu Ziyuan (I know it contradicts the fact when I said that I don't hate any of the charcters). I get it she was insecure of the fact that there were rumors that her husband still loved Cangse Sanren (WWX's mother) but that is what the mouth is for dear. Listen I love a strong female character that is like I don't need a man to care for me all the time, but I can't seem to really like Yu Ziyuan. She could have talked to her husband and ask him to confirm. But then again Jiang Fengmian was also at fault. Even if she would have asked he would just be like 'I don't wanna talk about it'. Which leads her to hate WWX, uh... hello? Just cuz your husband ain't talking to you about this sh*t doesn't mean you are granted the right to hurt the child. That's all.

Other than that the pain in this book is really portrayed well and the author really shows that love doesn't mean you tell your lover 'I love you' or 'your so beautiful' thousand times a day. Small things like what Lan WangJi does are enough (when he cooks foe Wei wuxian cuz he knows that he doesn't like gusu sect's bland ass food lol. I wouldn't either.)

I loved the story. I had high hopes for it when I read the summary and I left satisfied with more than I expected. Easily my no.1 cultivation book.

Absolutely a masterpiece. It's 4 am and raining, I am listening to it's live-action song. I am that crazy for it. This novel gives me life I love it so much it hurts. The story, characters and everything are well written. I can't describe how much of a masterpiece this novel is.

There is so much love in the novel which is not only limited to romantic love. It's crazy it makes me love and pity antagonists. I love every one of them except... Oh well, let's not spoil.

100% recommended.... more>> Please enjoy an amazingly adventurous ride of emotions. Do it!!

This is one the the best f*cking novel you'll ever read in your lifetime. Even if you don't want to read it you should at least watch the anime or live action. The MC and ML will definitely make you fall in love with them.

The MC literally confessed by screaming "I WANT TO SLEEP WITH YOU EVERYDAY" while his neck was literally almost slashed by the enemy. And when they did it later and he changed his mind, the ML was like, "everyday means everyday"

A great read. This is what I love in a novel- a good story with great characters. Romance is perfectly moulded into the story, instead of just writing a lame story just for romantic scenes and pa pa pa. Would recommend.

Just one thing its gold, I mean I made an account just to give a review. After reading the novel, I watched the anime and drama and they are all freaking good. If you hadn't read it yet it's your loss. The characters are lovable.

One of the iconic couple in BL novel. MDZS earns this current popularity with rich world building, interesting premise, heart-wrenching characters, and compelling conflict. This novel can punch you in the gut as the plot thickens. However, rest assured. The angst may be hurt and our MC and ML learn everything in a hard way. But at least they find peace and treasure what they have now. They are so precious I just want them to be happy forever.

This was the first Chinese Novel I read, and the one that dragged me down the Danmei hole. I won't even complain. This was one amazing experience, the angst was delicious and the characters felt so damn real. The only reason I'm leaving 4 stars is because I'm not the biggest fan of long flashbacks, I like stories that are centered in the present.

The first danmei novel I read, and honestly? Such a good, heartbreaking read. The plot had me hooked. I wasn't even focused on the BL most of the time, I was just thinking about the whole plot and falling in love with all of MXTX's characters. Everything tied up really nicely at the end of the book. Wei Wuxian is also one of the most dynamic characters I've ever had the pleasure of reading about; everything this man does is so captivating. He's so good and full of life that... more>> when bad things happen to him, it really does hurt me so much.

Lan Wangji's devotion to Wei Wuxian is genuinely so beautiful and sorrowful. He waited a whole 16 years for a man who might have never come back.

Sometimes I regret this being the first cultivation novel I've read, because I'm so in love with it that everything else sort of falls short.

Uhhh but those extras... I think I could have gone without some of the stuff in the extras, especially the part where WWX entered LWJ's dream when he was a teenager, and the whole s*xual stuff WWX did with that sword. I just thought it was really, really strange.

this novel really knows how to make the reader feel things. I laughed, I got angry, I felt helpless along with wwx, I got heartbroken bc of just how self-sacrificial and loving wwx is.

the style of writing is very compelling. Some people might find the switch between past and present confusing/jarring but I feel that it flows pretty well and just makes me want to read on more.

the characters are all very well fleshed out, no one is 2 dimensional, and 'villians' aren't all actually that bad, I love that... more>> the author gives the villains a backstory and illustrates how they are made as a product of their circumstances. There is one (1) guy I hate beyond compare though but I won't say it here cos spoilers.

the ML is really heartbreakingly devoted, really a stellar example of an ideal man hahaha. I really regret that mxtx didn't write anything to help wwx have closure and reunite with his family : (in the end, his brother also suffered along with him.

wwx is really one of the best characters to love, he's playful, brash, honest, brave, fearless, and omg, the list can go on forever. What I love the most about him was he was the only one who had the courage to stand up for what was right even when the odds seemed impossible. He really deserved so much better from the start <3

long story short mxtx is amazing and don't miss out on this gem, truly a xianxia bl classic that i'll always return to <<less

I have to say I have a soft spot for GDC cause it was the first story that introduced me to the world of Chinese novels. I came across the donghua first before starting on the novel and I did not regret it at all. It has the 2 main important thing that makes a story works - character development and a good story plot. I especially like how the author shows that the world is not black and white, where certain circumstances shape your life and the choices one... more>> make. Aspects like this was what make the story alive, something that was very real and not just a fiction.

Summary: one of the best stories I have even read + character development + deep plot <<less

Lan Zhan & Wei Ying would always be my first love in BL world.

This novel enchanted me a year back & still the magic lingers. The novel itself is a blast but drama, movie, manga, anime, chibi version added so much more color...I'm trapped in its world happily.

This novel will always be my favourite. I'll come back here always for reading it again to feel the bitter yet sweet moments.
