The demons of this world run amok; it’s time for the children of heroes to fill in their own legends.

Unfortunately, you’re not the cold and incorruptible female lead. You’re not even the high-status, delicate and charming second female lead: You’re just the detestable cannon fodder female number three!

The original host was secretly in love with the male lead while a fanatic in harming the female lead from the dark. Till the very end, she was merely a stumbling block for the love between the male lead and female lead. She let herself get stepped all over by the second male lead and lived a life that could only described as ‘s*upid’.

“So you’re saying… as long as I steal the female lead’s man, I’ll succeed?”

“Apologies, your target partner is… the female lead’s little brother.”

“Little brother?”

“Yes, it’s exactly that little brother who’s hopelessly in love with his older sister. The one with a twisted heart and evil tendencies, vicious and merciless… that little brother.”

This was a great story about rising above your circumstances, love, and living life to it's fullest within tight constraints.

My favorite character in this story is the ML - he is so black bellied and mysterious (with good reason). Some people didn't like his initial extreme actions, but I thought they perfectly fit his personality. Unlike some "dark" leads that the reader only sees the good sides of, but hears act horribly, this ML actually acts as expected, even to the FL. No mysterious force or unexplainable plot prevents him... more>> from doing his worst. That's what makes his growth especially pronounced - it's apparent when he starts developing feelings, and his actions by the end of the book are night and day to how he would act naturally.

I do think some of the subtleties and foreshadowing might have been lost in translation, because some of the plot twists happened really quickly and confusingly. I found myself almost consistently lost by the middle of an arc. Everything does get cleared up by the end though!

I thought the FL was pretty annoying. Her actions and behavior at the beginning almost made me lose interest multiple times, but the author notes explained the fl's thinking well enough to keep me going.

I ended up liking all the other characters. The theme of living a life without regret that emerged towards the end was pretty inspirational. I didn't like the return to real life extras, but the other extras were great.

In the end, this story is about people living the best they can within life's many constraints. The system in my mind represents the many shackles that bind a person's actions (I really liked one comment I read about how this is especially meaningful coming from an author writing in the currently restrictive Chinese environment). Even when there is no system, there's the restrictions of birth, of family, of past grudges and debts. There are so many things that can hold people back, but rather than complaining or focusing on those restrictions, these characters choose to do the best they can in each situation. They are still restricted, but aren't defined by those restrictions. <<less

I read this a while back and I really enjoyed it.

The humor of this is a bit understated but when I tell you I CACKLED when ML accidentally revealed his Sweet Home Alabama, "I love my sister" secret because he felt THAT comfortable talking to MC. Like shes like,

"i hate being in unrequited love with your sister's boyfriend"

... more>> then he says "imagine how I feel" (about his sister)

And then the awkward silence as they both stand there like, f**k, I wasn't supposed to hear/say that. And then MC standing there like no sh*t you love ur sister, but also being like, ah, this is the moment he snaps and kills me. And then being like " tbh I would kill me too I know all his secrets."

MC being mentally ill and allowing the ML to step all over her and do his whacky yandere actions earned this novel quite a few 1 stars, but THAT'S THE SORT OF SIMPING ANF BUFFOONERY I LIKE TO SEE IN MY NOVELS! Yes girl, show him your dedication and masochistic tendencies!

Also the side couple actually get together and have a (boring) nuclear family in the winter mountains somewhere. I am super not a fan of the disability no words ML at the end. In sickness or in health, but I don't like it. It wasn't necessary, and also, girl, you could totally communicate with your hubby while getting ur p*ssy pounded, ever heard of multi-tasking? She really woke up the next day like oop I missed my chance, if only I had a break between round 1-100 to ask him how he has recovered from his plot-enforced disability.

This was a sweet, fluffy read, but not big on the world-building/plot. There's a bit of a thread about ML's mom being a succubus thing, but that felt like a vehicle for the author to make it more h**ny and make the ML have a mental breakdown over his persistent not-dry dreams.

overall, added to my list

(btw, read this raw uncut in chinese) <<less

I started reading this because I was prepared for a slow burn love story. And this is it, it's slow burn. Our MC transmigrates into a novel about demon hunting and has to go through tasks in order for the story to progress normally. Her second task is to make the villain (the ML) fall in love with her. She's more devoted to completing the first mission than the second one because our ML is obsessed with his sister (not blood related) and is already a yandere for his sister.

The... more>> good part:

Miao Miao (MC) is portrayed realistically: she doesn't have super powers, no gold finger, and the author intends for her to be just a normal human. I liked this. She's scared when she has to be scared and acts like anyone would in these kinds of transmigration situations. The story has arcs and they are all intertwined and make sense.

The bad part:

But here's the thing, I didn't care in the least for the side characters or the plot. Like no..I just don't care about the ML's sister or her lover. I don't care about the princess side character or the father side character. I just. Don't. Care.

I do think it's a worth while read if you like transmigration and ancient China. But I'm here for the yandere ML and I'll tell you right now that althought it's sprinkled a little bit into the story, the real yandere moment only comes after 80 chapters. I know I signed up for slow burn but oh my god. I was losing my mind waiting for it.

And I'll be honest... the yandere moment didn't make much sense?????? SPOILER BELOW:

Spoiler

Essentially when he forced her to marry him it comes out of the blue??? LIKE THERE WAS NO SET UP FOR THIS I DONT UNDERSTAND. The build up for it wasn't there. I know he was confronting his sister and showing his "true face" and all that but..... afterwards he immediately runs to the MC and is like "marry me" after getting rejected by his sister and I just feel like he didn't blacken enough nor was black bellied enough at this point to really pull the marriage card and I am so frustrated because I wasted 80 chapters to read a build up that was so unsatisfying and I am mad

[collapse]

Anyways...I'm done ranting. I gave two stars to the translator. The one star is for the story but I'm frustrated. <<less

The story was great. Pretty understandable. But the way it was cut or segmented together, like when a scene is cut and a new scene is introduced, is choppy. Maybe it's the way it was formatted on the site or something. I don't know if I like the ending or not, it was just not something I expected. But I like the ML and FL interactions so that's cool.

I've been scrolling past this novel for sometime, the summary always put me off.

I finally decided to give it a chance and wowww guys this novel is a must read!!

FL is unique, it starts off a bit chuuni but she's a really fun character to read!

ML is also such a great character, hardworking and plays off of FL's nonsense really well.

Not overly faceslapping, intense drama - more of a great read to pass the time. Guaranteed that you'll be s**ked in by the end of the first chapter!

I stayed up all night and basically holed myself in my room for a whole day to binge read this masterpiece! I loved reading the changes in the way the ML treated our FL from the beginning until the end. Their banters at the beginning were so cute and would even make me laugh sometimes. Seeing how the ML slowly gained feelings for FL was so heartwarming for to read and the action and adventure were never lacking. I’m so grateful I found this gem, I will forever remember this... more>> story and I’m glad that this is one of the first things I read as I get back into reading web novels. It's rare to see a system who was so strict with the plot until MC had to rack her brain in order to find a loophole to change the outcome of the story without violating the system's rule. But if the system wanted the story to be exactly like the original, why he had to make the second mission? Wasn't it a bit contradictory?

Spoiler

The system gave MC mission to earn ML's affection while in the original story, ML hated MC so much and even tortured her everyday to vent his anger and frustation. Well, it's a good thing that ML could love MC but didn't it mean that that the story won't be the same as the original?

[collapse]

But it didn't matter because thankfully, the story was quite interesting. In the beginning, it's a bit hard to read this novel though because the original protagonists (except MC) were a bit unlikable. Mu Yao was prejudice, short-minded, and rigid. Liu Fuyi was the type of man that I hated the most. He was kind and gentle to everybody (including women) and subconsciously often gave a false hope to many women. And worst of all, he was so dense and oblivious to the other party's feeling. Mu Yao was often hurted by this side of him and ML hated him because of this too. Meanwhile ML was so arrogant and vicious. He often made MC suffer in the beginning and almost made her lost her life. But gradually, his heart was soften by MC's warm heart until he finally fell in love with her. Mu Yao also became a bit more broad-minded and she slowly tried to accept ML the way he was as her little brother. As for Liu Fuyi, I didn't know whether he changed or not because he rarely had any interaction with other women after getting married.

The ending was actually a happy ending but it still felt bittersweet to me.

Spoiler

It's because I read the truth behind the tragic love story of ML's parent in the side story. It's so tragic it made me cry. Too bad the author killed Consort Zhao off the screen because she was the cause of all those tragedies. I really wanted to see her and ML's confrontation before he killed her.

[collapse]

A bit suggestion for the translator: I hope the transition between scenes and before changing the POV could be smoother because sometimes it's a bit confusing to read since there's no separator or note before that. <<less

This was a good read. Different arcs were actually interesting and made me binge-read it. Also, like the development of the romance between FL (Ling Miaomiao) and ML (Mu Sheng). The ML was initially a jerk who also got his own character development. Meanwhile, I'm glad that they didn't villainize OG FL and OG ML and still remained within the scope of OG plotline.

For me, the only con was the ending could be better. I felt that even the extra chaps were not enough. Also, I also felt complicated to... more>> FL's feelings for ML bc she didn't show signs that she truly fell in love with him or their relationship just a mission. <<less

The pitiful main character required to fulfill clashing mission objectives.

My thought after finishing the novel: What an unsatisfying ending. I felt like I wasted the energy sent invested in this novel even though I had enjoyed it tremendously.

The good things:

... more>> 1. Good writing

2. Really interesting world, plot, character, relationship development (yes all of those)

3. No faceslapping drama or what most transmigrated novels usually have. The relationship development between characters are realistic and enjoyable. Enjoyed the growing love between the ML and FL

The bad things:

1. What the hell is up with the ending????? Neither the extra story or the ending felt complete. AUTHOR WHY.

2. The ending is not only unsatisfying but
Spoiler

also SAD.

[collapse]

3. The author could have done a better job on tying loose ends. It felt like the author had written a wonderful novel and all the way to the climax and then ended there. Which in this case, doesn't seem like the author had lost steam and just wanted the novel to end, but had ended it like that ON PURPOSE. <<less

Unfinished Review-

I wholeheartedly love this novel, I read till ch 30 and I'm going to put it on hold until the whole novel is completely translated. I started this with the intention to MTL but the MTL were too hard to follow.

As for the novel, the characters are such a breath of fresh air. They are all unique and have motivations that don't have everything to do with hurting the FL like in so many other novels. The plot actually has value outside the love story and isn't just filler... more>> for the love story. I hope it continues to be interesting as the story develops. The mystery of the ML is also something I'm looking forward to reading about. <<less

This is interesting. The plot seems unique, the relationships are complex and the romance isn't linear like many novels I've read on this site.

I like the MC. She's not some overpowered assassin, nor scheming b*tch. She's intelligent and insightful and doesn't consider the missions as mere game quests. As a mtter of fact, this is the first time I've seen a novel intertwine the missions with the plot of the novel in such an interesting manner. You go through the story and things are unravelled on their own little by... more>> little. It feels very much like a psychological thriller or a detective novel set in a fantasy setting.

The narration is both very beautiful and very criptic. The author uses the narrative style we often see in movies: While one set of characters talk about a topic, the scene moves to another scene dealing with the same topic - either through dialogues between other characters or through flashbacks. The problem is (and this is just my personal thoughts), this narrative technique works brilliantly in some chapters, while it makes other chapters very cryptic and confusing. Kudos to the translator for doing such s great job at portraying the intricacies of the narration so well in English. The characters themselves are very well done. The only complaint I have is regarding the original novel's FL. She just annoys me for some reason. She's not a bad person, neither is she a naive white lotus. It's just that her thought process seems way too narrow in some ways. (In the novel, she is described as someone who sees the world in "either black or white", which I believe is absolutely accurtare in describing her.) I don't know if I'll change my opinion later, but for now, I feel that she isn't a good match for the original ML, nor does she deserve the overwhelming and unconditional love she gets from her brother (our ML).

Sorry for that rant.

Tl;dr: The novel is very different from the concept of 'light novels' in general. There's an intriguing plot and many interesting characters.

Definitely RECOMMENDED! <<less

Note: read to c30 then skipped to endings.

wow all I can say is this really paled in comparison to the drama adaptation. I watched the show first, so I was surprised when I started reading this and saw the train wreck of pacing and plot. All I can say is that the screenwriters better have been heavily compensated for hard carrying the drama’s plot.

the novel overall felt very scattered. We know that the MC Ling Miaomiao has a system, but we barely see it throughout the story, only knowing of... more>> the 2 missions issued. This was one of the many aspects done better in the drama, where favourability increases were regularly updated. The male lead, Mu Sheng was also way more tolerable in the drama. In this novel, there were multiple times he put her in death’s way. Maybe it’s just me but I can’t imagine the male lead doing that and it not resulting in a wife chasing crematorium. He treats the FL like dogsh*t and she still has to let things go bc he’s the mission target?? You better get that I’d be holding that grudge and killing him within the first second of finishing the mission. Mu Yao is also really hypocritical here, acting holier than thou to shitty strangers, even disregarding the lives of the other 3 mcs. So glad the drama made her a girl’s girl.

overall, the plot was really scattered. Sometimes I would flip a chapter and suddenly there’s a new character/plot line introduced with zero foundation laid. Extras aren’t worth it either. I usually find novels to be better than their drama counterparts, but this and wifty are the exceptions. <<less

I share the same sentiment as many of the readers. I was very frustrated with the sudden flashbacks, and also who's memory are we seeing, who's in the know and who's not... I almost dropped it but I was too intrigued.

Even if the flashbacks were just written in italics, it would have been clearer. It could have been a 4 stars for me...

sits preserved at the back of my brain. Wish there was a more satisfying comeuppance to the perpetrator behind this, but it makes sense that not everything is resolved neatly and not all grievances will be repaid with justice equally. I was thinking during the first half of the book on how i'd rate this 2 when I finish reading it because mu sheng was insufferable to me and I felt like he doesn't deserve miaomiao, but I think the latter half (?) sort of rectified the deal for me. I ended up liking mu yao and liu fuyi too, so that's good. Maybe the pacing was a bit slow or I'm just quick to get bored but the pacing was painful and dragged-out sometimes. Still not sure how I feel about the open ending, but I guess the readers will just have to use their imagination for what happens after the last extra. Formatting was a bit wonky when it comes to the flashbacks and some scenes at separate settings bled into one another because there's no divider separating them, but the translation is still good. <<less

Grade:

8/10 (not the worst, but entertaining enough)

TLTR:

nice version of the trope of reincarnation and transmigration, nice interest in the world building and specially the demons, I like the grow of the characters, and the relationship between our FMC and ziqi is quite entertaining, the worst part is somewhat lacking driving force of the system and the s*upid restrictions it employs. Good for a romantic read, yandere lover and mischievous FMC

I enjoy the read.

Sometimes it does get frustrating with the way the FL is and how she is trying so hard to stay on script or something. Which also doesn't make sense to me since the mission is to prevent the Black Lotus from blackening; so shouldn't she be more "I like you Ziqi" or something since the beginning.

I feel sad for Ziqi's parents.
Spoiler

And angry at his bad Aunt Consort Zhao. I feel that even if the dad didn't leave his mother in a fit of anger or insecurity, his aunt will find a way to break the parents apart and cast the forgetting spell. They might even imprison him and his mother too.

[collapse]

Comment about ending.
Spoiler

I wasn't expecting this kind of ending. I thought since the system wanna prevent him from blackening, that his ending will also be changed as well. Unfortunately not. Ch 112, the final chapter implies he dies. I do appreciate the extra. Kinda like the writer gave us reader a parallel universe where Ziqi didn't die.

I loved reading this book so much so that I stopped everything I was doing and binged it for a day. The romance started at about chapter 50 and until then, I low key despised the male lead. He and the FL had a sibling type relationship, but in a bickering, annoying each other way. But once he realizes his feelings for her, he’s very possessive and jealous. I loved the plot of the book, but the ending was so underwhelming and unexpected : (

the ML basically goes yandere and starts controlling the MC like a puppet for 7 days (although the MC is not actually controlled by him because of the system but just follows with it). This kind of ruined it for me because it was too controlling and it was also the part where they "got together", I would have prefered for them to get together without this types of manipulations. Also, I felt that the ML didnt have a very good excuses to start controlling MC, the fight with his sister as an excuse was quite a weak argument. Kind of linked to that, was the fight with the sister was a bit disappointing as we dont see a developemnt when it comes to what the sister thinks of the ML, and overall not much developmenton her character.
