The Hunter’s Gonna Lay Low

Hunter Cha Eui-jae, who was dispatched to seal a rift that appeared over the West Sea, was flung out as soon as he closed the rift. When he came to his senses, he was lying in a garbage dump.

Starving, he was drawn like a zombie is to blood to a hangover soup restaurant, where he realized that he had fallen into South Korea, eight years in the future.

In this era, disaster alerts notify people of rift openings in advance, ASMR videos of slimes gathered from dungeons were trending, and idle hunters livestream unboxings of A-rank longswords.

Unlike the past, where people trembled in fear of an impending apocalypse, the future was surprisingly peaceful, leaving Cha Eui-jae feeling empty. Since things had turned out this way, why not start a second chapter of life as a part-timer at the hangover soup restaurant, rather than being a hunter?

“That’s strange.”

“…”

“Have we met somewhere before?”

Cha Eui-jae’s plan to quietly spend his remaining days as the only part-time worker at the decades-old hangover soup restaurant goes awry when he encounters a mysterious, gas-masked individual…

Although I still have yet to finish the first part, I firmly believe that it's not one of those novels that starts strong and then deflates into something lame and bland. (Normally I wouldn't dare to write something like this since it feels like I'm raising flags, however, the reviews of those who already read far ahead gave me courage to do so.)

It's a really vivid and complex story with lovable and unique characters. It's funny, lovely, sweet, exciting, intriguing and, of course, angsty. I always get strangely emotional... more>> while reading even when it's just a seemingly "filler" chapter about doing daily activities. Oddly enough, even the heart-wrenching scenes make me feel comforted. Maybe because MC and ML's relationship is gold tier? Both of them are so precious that sometimes I just want to get them out of the novel and give them a chance to have a truly ordinary life together, filled with love and happiness.

By the way, the review of snsss450 is perfect - if you want more information, just take a look there, because I'm lazy to write more.

It's really worth reading. <<less

So the story is kind of interesting. But there are some part that make it a little boring or annoying. Like how easily the character (or the author) to do something "just think about it later/ it's tomorrow problem" when it's pretty important topic/problem. And how the MC the type to "nah I don't really want to think about it. Can we just use our fist?" and the ML the type to hide anything that he thinks it will trouble the MC. Can you all just discuss thing proprerly? Romance... more>> development between them is actually pretty good. But sometimes MC needs to stay his ground in front of the ML. <<less

I was lured by the art and synopsis, but the story isn't up to par of what I was expecting. (Mainly because of the MC, which is a big downer because there's no development of side characters and the story focuses on MC) Sure, it's funny at times, but the comedic moments seem out of place with the flow of the story, and the scenarios that should be serious end up diminished

MC:

Spoiler

- what you expect: supposed to be the top hunter with a heck ton of experience in slaying monsters

- what you get: MC doesn't have the slightest sense of caution. I don't know if it's a translation error, but MC abhors ML for being crazy, but he signed a contract with the guy without even confirming the clauses. Getting himself poisoned in the process is all on him.

- what you get: MC's personality seems weirdly written. He wants to lay low after escaping from the rift, but he actively seeks ways to make his life harder. He gets s**ked into another rift while trying to apply for a low hunter rating, proceeds to kill every monster and boss in rift. What is he trying to achieve???

[collapse]

ML:

Spoiler

- nothing stands out to me, he seems like the stereotypical psycho obsessed with MC kind of man

[collapse]

Side characters:

Spoiler

- They get introduced and thrown aside like tissue paper.

- Vice of Pado guild: tank guy, supposed to be good at protecting, briefly mentioned to be kind of dumb. Powerless and mute before ML who's his Guild leader. Then how on earth is he suited to be the vice??? How does the Pado Guild even manage to operate if the top boss is a psycho sociopath and the second in command is dumb???

- Honeybee: literally just an influencer

- Minki: suggested to be a info collector with high stealth, actually a boss fearing subordinate who doesn't get to show his strength

- The weapon creator S-class: classic social media user stereotype

- Jung Vin: encountered MC multiple times in the past, mentioned to have a slight second place complex, but isn't allowed interactions with MC for more development of his personality. It feels like he's there to serve as fodder even though I was really looking forward to seeing how he would behave with MC. The scene where he met MC literally ended with "He couldn't recognise me because I was disguised as J" and "He mailed in his autograph to be hung in my hangover soup shop"

[collapse]

This story is an amalgamation of JP webnovel cliches (hiding power schmuck) with the inclusion of the Hunter trope and BL tag. If I was at the beginning of my reading career, I would enjoy it, but this kind of MC isn't what I'm looking for at the moment. <<less

I really want to read the rest but I can't find the raws anywhere so I'll have to wait

The dynamic between ML and MC is so good because MC is a badass who isn't easily impressed and he isn't naive despite being heroic. ML is cold to others/cheeky to MC (calls him hyung and pouts when MC ignores him)

The world building is good, there are many mysteries we don't know anything about. Top hunters and their relationship with MC kinda similar to one punch Man.

This person is dying
I feel some reviews are a bit misleading (at least I have different take). So I write this note while reading quickly before I forget.

(Spoilery for obvious reason, advised to only read if you're worried about these points)

Cha Euijae wanted a quiet life:

It seemed that it was someone else request, that's why sometimes his action didn't reflect this. He just didn't have any goal after returned so he followed it, it seemed he prefered to help and save people more.

J's previous friendship with other hunters:

Spoiler

It's not really friendship, more like acquaintances and co-workers with decent relationship so it's not weird to me that he didn't think of them too much or didn't try to contact them. Maybe it's better for author's to elaborate or just don't let J think of them at all. Bc in novel if MC reminiscents about someone it feels as if they could be close except they never got mentioned again.

Lee Sayoung waiting for Cha Euijae to tell him he was J:

Spoiler

To me it didn't seem LSY was really waiting. He kept mentioning that CEJ kept some secrets from him, but he wasn't even sure that secret was that CEJ was J. He just had suspicions. Then an incident happened and LSY was sure that CEJ was J, and during the same incident/same day CEJ quickly admitted he's J. So where's the waiting time??

[collapse]

Beside that, my personal rant:

Spoiler

I felt the pace was really bad at first, the daily life feel dragging, you know when 3 CHAPTERS of novel got adapted into ONE CHAPTER of webtoon which also didn't feel that long, that it's DRAGGING. There's so much unnecessary narratives that I almost gave up reading. I admit I can only read after chapter 50+ after I read the webtoon. Idk whether I get used to it or the quality just improved, but yeah I feel much more comfortable after chapter 60 when things/plot start to pick up. Bits of extra stuff with side characters become interesting and funny, yes now I know why it's comedy. Its narrative actually already quite funny since day 1 but before when things are slow and nothing much going on reading about a side character eating bread or npc keeping watch of dungeon entrance feel so much taxing! Now I don't care even enjoyed side characters interaction with each other bc I already warmed up to their presence, know their role, and hopefully they won't just dissapear later in narrative. Ig I suggest to read it from the middle like me if you don't like dragging beginning, or just skim stuff that feel like dragging. Happy reading!

wow, MC has cool shiny valuable thing sitting in their inventory etc.

, but that illusion of 'over-poweredness' gets stripped away really quickly. What I found really interesting about this story was that the MC stayed very powerful throughout - physically at least.

Then (mild spoilers ahead)

you see examined in the MC's past the struggles he faces as a single individual - as THE singular most powerful human being, and the burdens society places upon him and their emotional toll.

. A lot of the stuff in the beginning actual becomes relevant much later on, which is pretty cool.

The romance in this novel is also a slowburn in the beginning, and the plot definitely accelerates before the whole 'realisation of feelings' stuff, but once the romance catches up it's very present. Sayoung (the love interest) has the temperament of a clingy cat, if that's what you're into.

Overall the two main characters are very well developed. The supporting characters, although less so, are often utilised very well in the moments they do get. The humour shines through very well.

I highly recommend this if you like wacky timeline stuff and character-centric stories.

(As a side note, the author seems like a pretty cultured/ well-read person? They make references to paintings and (big spoilers)

the huge white whale that appears when the 'big bad' happens is almost definitely an allusion to Moby d*ck and the 'unstoppable force of nature' thing, because even when the whale in this story gets stopped..

)

TLDR: Interesting character dynamics, well written plot w/ a clear sense of direction, great quality translation, has funny moments and incredible amounts of angst (mostly in part 2/ after chapter 144). <<less
