The Husky and His White Cat Shizun

Description

Mo Ran thought becoming Chu Wanning’s disciple was a mistake.

His shizun was really too much like a cat while he himself was a dumb pup who’d only slobber and wag his tail.

Dogs and cats were different by nature; originally, the dumb pup didn’t want to reach his furry paws out to that cat.

At first he thought, dogs should be with dogs, like his shixiong, beautiful and tame like a cute Japanese Spitz, and the two of them together would surely be a match made in heaven.

Yet, after having died and reborn, after having lived two lives, the one he hauled back each time to his den in the end was always the one he couldn’t stand at first: that snow-white kitty shizun.

This novel really has the best prose out there, I swear.

Plus the characters, not only the main ones, they are well-fleshed out. Very human-like; the 'goodness' and the 'evilness', the selfishness and the selflessness, the drive, the desire, the ignorance,... all these are captured by the author. The reader will ask, why are they like that? and the author will explain through beautiful analogies until in the end, the reader understands the character so thoroughly, as if they were the ones transported into the story.

This novel has everything I could... more>> ask for in a book — plot, world building, characters that feel 'alive', bringing laughter and tears, a lesson, etc.

Highly recommended, as long as the TW does not bother you so much that it spoils the story. <<less

I'm currently listening to this novel's narration in chinese on lizhi. fm (they are on ch 160 now, have to patiently wait for the new update T-T)

I read this novel after I finish all mxtx's books, have nothing to read so I tried this. And it's been so hard for me to read this. So many angst... everytime I read it, it felt like some big stone press into my heart. It's been hard to read and finish, but after finish it I craved for more. It's really a... more>> beautiful love story.

I really love CWN... and loved cute Xia sidhi even more.

I will reread again after it fully translated. Coz the mtl version is really confusing sometimes... and I felt some essense were lost in translation <<less

maaaannnn I seriously underestimated it at first. But I thought reading the synopsis that it might be angsty (which I like a lot) but THIS much angsty? I did NOT expect it. I cried every 10 chapters. I can't wait for the updates. I hope translator-san gets back from her seclusion safe and sound to provide the rest of the chapters. Thank you for your hard work ?

What the H. It's showing I gave it 1 star. But It's my most favorite cw novel ever. 6/5

The world building is amazing. On par with Mo Dao Zu Shi (grandmaster of demonic sect) and the world is online.

It’s extremely well-written, the author has ways to make your heart ache at some parts but feel warmth at some.

Definitely worth a read. Never want the story to end.

Don't let the title of this deceive you because the novel has absolutely nothing to do with huskies or white cats. That being said, it's probably up there as one of the best BL novels I've read thus far. The world is expansive and both ML and MC are flawed yet lovable characters.

My only complaint is that halfway through the novel there was an overall feeling of despair right up until the ending and it was so oppressive that I almost didn't care about anything at the end. It was... more>> almost too little too late. However, that doesn't mean it's a bad novel and I binged the entire thing in a few days.

A word of warning though.

Spoiler

There's a lot of r*pe scenes involving MC's old self. In fact, there's more noncon than consensual s*x in this novel.

This is one of my favorite BL light novels, all the way up there with MXTX'S MDZS and HOB, and Priest's Sha Po Lang. Get ready for a lot of feels, for your heart to be repeatedly broken and glued back together again and again.

First, is the beautifully written characters. Chu Wanning is an absolutely gorgeous and tragic figure- compassionate, kind, intelligent. You could say that love made him weak- when he falls in love, he loves hard, with all of his heart, body, and soul, even while that love... more>> tears it all apart. Do we even deserve such a person? NO. Mo Ran is commonly known as "Moron" among the readers, and for good reason t00. If I were to make an analogy, Mo Ran is like an annoying son- a brat with many flaws and mistakes, but us readers can't help but love him and side with him all the same. The other characters are extremely well-built, complex, and 3D. 10/10 for character building. I have cried more than once because of the side characters, who each have their own story, perils, and relationships.

... and I'll end my review on that. Imo, a good cast is what makes a good plot. A story is not built before the characters, but rather, is the journey of the characters and their choices. <<less

This novel is truly something special, it's heartbreaking, painful, funny and very very thirsty. Nothing is what it seems and every character has something to hide. The way the story unfurls and the twists and turns are unveiling are masterfully done. I went in knowing that it was going to hurt, and boy did it but I couldn't have known how much I would enjoy the hurt.

Of the two main characters it was love at first sight for me for Chu Wanning, I feel like Meatbun reached directly into my... more>> mind and created a character that I would fall absolutely head over heels for. Of all the danmei I've read Chu Wanning is an absolute standout. Mo Ran I wanted to do nothing but kick into a spiked pit for the first 80 or 90 chapters but stick with him, be patient and you'll fall in love with him too, his character development is really fascinating if you have the patience for it.

I think I've re-read this novel cover to cover 4 times and found myself going back and re-reading huge chunks (like 50-150 chapters) every couple of days since I first read it a month or so ago. There's so much to pick apart and I just can't get enough of it.

Definitely be mindful of the warnings going in, but if you can stick through it this is a beautiful and moving story well worth the read. (And re-read. Aaaand re-re-read). <<less

I just experience a once in a life time roller coaster ride!

I was laughing a moment ago, then crying at the end of it.

It was agonizing to read and yet I can't stop myself from reading it.

... more>> This web novel is well written, so beautiful and the brutally realistic portrait of each character are justified.

The translation is so good as well, easy to understand and well defined.

Even though it was painful to read, still it was worth it.

Just give it a try, and you won't regret.

And there was this one sentence that I can't seem to forget:

"Cruel truth or tender lies? Which is hate? Which is love?"

Anyway, thank you for sharing this amazing novel! <<less

It's such an emotional rollercoaster you have to be mentally ready for and yes it's hella explicit (so I don't know how the drama will pull it off but I'm really looking forward to it). I love how everything comes full circle so there are things to pay special attention to (every character is complex and certain things aren't as they appear). It's 311 chapters of angst so have some tissues ready and I recommend going in blind to get that full experience.

Also... I love Chu Wanning so much he... more>> deserves all the love! <<less

The author is some kind of awful sad*st that wants to torture people. TBH, if I didn't know the spoilers in advance, I wouldn't have the willpower to finish reading this story. It's long. It's painful. It's heartbreaking.

I really hate stories where the angst is derived from misunderstandings, but this was so wonderfully written. Even if you find yourself hating someone, your heart will eventually break for them. Towards the end, you get an explanation of why characters acted the way they did.

The only reason I gave this story 4... more>> stars instead of 5/5 is because it gave me PTSD. I can't stop thinking about it. And it still hurts.

I kind of hate the author for putting me through this emotional rollercoaster. It's definitely one of the most memorable things I've read but it's not recommended for everyone. <<less

One of the best BL novel I've read. The plot is intricate and author has a lot of techniques to build her characters while sprinkling tons of foreshadows toward the big reveal. I also really appreciate her fresh twists and turns; it made the novel stands out.

9/10 Characters

The characters are almost perfect in the sense that they are all flawed. I think the flaws add debts and make the characters more humane.

The only thing I feel lacking is there is not enough back story for CWN and his love/lust for his student. I just don't understand how he who took in Moran as a student/or son would fall in love with him at such a young age. It's somewhat pe*ophilia if you asked me.

[collapse]

10/10 Plot

Really enjoyed the intricacy of the plot and how the characters are all weaved together by fate, love, and hate. I also appreciate that the family aspect is emphasized in the story and not just romance is presented. I love the bond between CWN, Moran, Xue Meng and maybe Shimei too.

Spoiler

Xue Meng...I cried for you when your parents died... like that sh*t hurts and too bad his real dad just kind of stood there as a bystander. It's a good thing he never made up with his real dad.

[collapse]

The story do have a lot of triggering and mature contents though.

Spoiler

Moran (MC) takes his shizun (ML) as a concubine for many years, and their wedding night was elaborated in details of how he was r*ped and then fed an aphrodisiac so he would respond to the r*pe... etc. Even toward the end, CWN still gets taken hostage by MC and he proceeded to r*pe him again. Moran's past is also triggering... like he was mistreated, ab*sed, and framed for the gang r*pe and death of a young girl which became the birth of his dark side (actually I really like how author builds this up because the theme is relatable...good people can be pushed to their limit/the thin line between good and evil)

[collapse]

If you're a fan of MXTX, you might enjoy this one too. <<less

I've read the whole book so far and I loved it but I'm so super new to this site and I can't figure out if this book ends at 109ch or if there's more and if there is, is it translated or still in translation? My apologies for being so confused, I've no where else to ask for what might be a very silly question...

In regards to the book, it was dark and grisly but faultlessly brilliant in that it so clearly showed the abject perspective of someone who wanted... more>> to love and be loved, but had no idea how and could only create something of that nature for himself out of obsession. The character's were outstanding and extremely detailed, the writing brilliant and the plot intricate and leaves one burning for more, needing answers, needing closure, needing more. I enjoyed it, despite a very dark nature of the MC and his myriad of serious issues. I'd only love to read more. <<less

I don't know how to edit my rating, but I'm changing it to a 3.5. Keeping my initial review in italics, then put my new review in standard font below the initial one. Just jump straight to that one if you'd like to hear my current stance on this novel.

So far I really enjoy this novel, the polished MTLs allow me to binge read this until the end. It's very angsty, but it seems suffering through that angst is quite rewarding at times.

Though, I feel like the story could've been more of a shocker if the author didn't include in her A/Ns that

NEW REVIEW:

I did not enjoy rereading this novel--or more so picking it back up since I never finished it in the first place-- as much as I thought I would. At the time of writing this review (Roughly two years ago, I am writing this one on November 10th, 2021), I had a HUGE danmei brainrot and would read absolutely anything thrown to me. I feel like enjoying Meatbun's works is an acquired taste that I've either A. Lost or B. Did not acquire this taste at all since I do not enjoy countless knives being thrown at me for my main source of entertainment anymore. Meatbun is GENIUS at doing just that, and I do not like receiving these said knives 24/7.

One of the things that I did not like upon picking up this novel was the fact that their occupants don't exactly match their actions... at all? What I mean by this is that Chu Wanning is supposed to be a Shizun, on top of that, an Elder from one of the most prominent (?) sects. As soon as he fell in love with Mo Ran, absolutely all reasoning and rationality that a Shizun and Elder is supposed to have is thrown out of the window. It's just become two teenagers (Teenager No. 1 being Mo Ran which is kind of understandable since he's supposed to be seen as one, and Teenager No. 2 being Chu Wanning... which is not exactly how you should describe and ADULT EDLER now should we?) taking one step closer to each other then five steps back for two lifetimes straight. The only one I found to be quite fitting was Mo Ran's Taixian-jun title from his previous life.

Another thing I didn't like was how the author (not even the author, just the narrator itself) sometimes repeats information many times or omits common knowledge from the readers.

I really really loved the beginning and some of the characters in this book (Xue Meng was my favourite in the whole novel since he was surprisingly the most rational out of EVERYONE in the damn book), but towards the 200 mark, it started becoming tiring to read. I ultimately dropped it because of the first two points, my lack of interest + multiple spoilers about what happened in the ending. From what I read about its ending, it absolutely pissed me off. So much potential with the other mechanics the author threw in there and it just HAD to be that sort of ending. <<less

My advice: read this even if you don't have much expectation of it if you read the synopsis or reviews or whatever.

I cannot put my feelings for this novel into words.. My emotions are all over the place right now after binge reading until the last chapter available (109)..

I love this novel so much that I don't even know what to say. I started reading it randomly, I don't even think I read the synopsis but now it took the 1st place in my "most beloved novels" list. I couldn't... more>> stop reading until I was so sleepy that my eyes closed on their own accord.

I won't spoil anything in here. It's better to just trust me and start reading it. I trust that you will love it just as much as I do.

Thank you authors and translators for this gem!! Please please give us the next chapters ;-; my heart cannot take the waiting <<less

1/1: amazing characters development

2/2: one of the best plot I've read thus far

I haven't been addicted to a novel for quite a long while, 2ha really stole all my attention. It's full of the good old everyone misunderstand each other and what is said and what should have been said kinds of tropes. Full of gore and knives, every sweet moment is hidden with knives but its the bittersweet pain that I absolutely love. Just finished book 1, so I am really looking forward to how to journey ahead will be.
