The Husky and His White Cat Shizun

Description

Mo Ran thought becoming Chu Wanning’s disciple was a mistake.

His shizun was really too much like a cat while he himself was a dumb pup who’d only slobber and wag his tail.

Dogs and cats were different by nature; originally, the dumb pup didn’t want to reach his furry paws out to that cat.

At first he thought, dogs should be with dogs, like his shixiong, beautiful and tame like a cute Japanese Spitz, and the two of them together would surely be a match made in heaven.

Yet, after having died and reborn, after having lived two lives, the one he hauled back each time to his den in the end was always the one he couldn’t stand at first: that snow-white kitty shizun.

2ha isn't just pure angst. It has its lighthearted moments, and i've laughed quite a lot while reading it. But the angst comes early, just planting the seed in your heart, which begins to progressively grow and grow as the plot unfolds. Through reading the protagonist's thoughts and feelings, you gradually feel some sort of shift, and what was simple at first suddenly doesn't seem so easy. When the angst hits, it REALLY hits. Like, it's the type to make you gasp and choke out a... more>> "no".

i spent an entire night sobbing while reading the last few arcs. Meatbun writes complex relationships so well, especially MR's change of attitude towards CW throughout the novel. The romance doesn't feel rushed at all. The hatred and passion is so vivd, which makes MR and CW so special to me. It's hard to put their relationship into words, but they're definitely my favorite danmei couple.

i would advise readers to take their time and not rush reading, lest they miss important details of the plot. The plot towards the ending seems chaotic, and is heavy on the lore, so in order to avoid confusion, you should try not to binge quickly. <<less

Spent around a week to binge reading 2HA and think I was crying everyday while reading this lol. Chu Wanning definitely left a huge mark in me since I’m involved with danmei novels. I mean, look. Even his name is so pretty.

I got it when some people said they can’t handle this novel until the end. And I think this was one of the longest danmei but I felt worth it as I had a chance to explore the world of Mo Ran and Chu Wanning.

I have to admit, the author's writing style is really great! It's not only about how good her literacy, her ability to weave words, but also how she arranged the timeline and scenes into an interesting and well-written piece that makes this novel a noteworthy one.

There are already a lot of people listing the real horror of this novel: a story of how the rapist is sent to a happy end with the victim, because well the victim loves him, and the rapist repented, so it's a happy end.

The Gong... more>> is called a dumb Husky for misunderstanding his Shizun (Shou), and it's painful how his dumbassery hurt the Shou over and over again. I felt my chest tighten and I want to cry out so bad, during the time I read this novel, feeling injustice for the Shou, and really wanted to strangle the Gong so much.

In the final analysis, the novel's overall idea might not actually be good, but I can't deny the author's outstanding writing. <<less

Here a few bandages for the knives in the novel.

Things are and are not what they seem.

Do not be too quick to judge.

The secrets revealed at the end will make you question everything.

Good Luck.

Mind the content warnings.

Those who think the r*pe was 'eroticized' or whitewashed are wrong. So wrong.

Read till the end.

I’m really conflicted about how to go about writing this review.

For starters, the first 150 chapters were brilliantly translated and so I have an idea about how masterfully the writer writes. Chapter 150 onwards I had to depend on a somewhat cleaned-up MTL and the essence of the story was completely lost. So, while I read it all the way till the end, I don’t quite know how to review this book.

I’ll divide it into two segments. The relationship and the story.

The relationship I will further divide into TXJxCWN and... more>> MRxCWN.

I was extremely uncomfortable with the non-con/dub-con between TXJ and CWN. The gratuitous descriptions of r*pe were unnecessary and oftentimes simply diversions.

I loved the relationship between Mo Ran and Chu Wanning. Mo Ran’s character development was masterfully done. The author wasn’t in a hurry to redeem him and I liked that. I grew to like the character over a period of time. Mo Ran isn’t an easy character to write. But the author has unraveled every side of him with unparalleled brilliance. The relationship between Mo Ran and Chu Wanning is heartbreakingly beautiful. It’s not a simple relationship of love. It involves two lifetimes of misunderstandings, sacrifices, pain, and gut-wrenching levels of angst that left me anxious to the point of tears.

Now, the plot.

The plot was interesting to a degree. At least up until the Rufeng Sect Wedding. After that, it got quite outlandish. I felt that the writer kept pulling rabbits out of her hat at every turn of the page in a quest to shock the reader. Most often than not, it didn’t hit the mark. Some plot twists/backstories were interesting. But a majority of them were simply unnecessary diversions and didn’t make any sense.

The whole Big Boss reveal was meh. And the reasons for ‘Big Bosses’ actions were even more outlandish. And there were innumerable plot holes. I didn't even read the extras!

I feel the need to say that once more chapters are translated, I might read chapter 150 onwards again. Because I feel a lot was lost in translation. <<less

Don't get the wrong idea from the cover. If you are okay with trigger warnings in the book, you are gonna love this so much! It is heavily angst, well-written characters and story. It is a beautiful yet painful journey of someone who committed mistakes and now seeking redemption.

Give it a chance and you will fell in love with this masterpiece. I cried, laughed, smile so much reading this. It was an amazing unforgettable ride of emotions and adventures. You will see their love blossom which is in my opinion... more>> wonderful to witness. <<less

I usually never read novels before they're fully translated, but I got tricked into starting this book when it was briefly marked completely translated, and by the time I realized it wasn't, I was hooked and devoured the rest in mtl. After finishing, I'm really glad I got hooked and can't wait to re-read the book once it gets fully translated for real - I feel like there was so much nuance that I didn't get the first time around.

First off, the book strikes me as an epic, with a... more>> heavy focus on creating a well-fleshed-out cultivation/fantasy world. So like novels that are aiming to create a whole world, it really gets into the weeds of that world's history, political and economical dynamics. People develop complex characters as you see how they handle the various situations they get tossed into. All of this really appealed to me, but I can see how it might be off-putting for someone who just wants a simple and quick plot. If you are put off by the elaborate descriptions in Lord of the Rings, or enjoy reading about good vs evil, this is probably not the book for you.

The second thing I loved about this book is how complex the characters are. This is not to say that they are necessarily realistic, but they have fully fleshed out personalities and histories. No one in this book is really good or really evil because the good ones can still have desires or be selfish, while the evil ones are usually a victim of their circumstances. The author tries really hard to distinguish between people's actions and their motivations - many times the most inhumane actions have very human motivations. I usually can't stand when the author comes up with some half-baked excuse for a character's actions, but the excuses in this book were so well-done it didn't feel like a cop-out. The one thing that the author portrays as relatively negative is group think and mob mentality. Many times, people are portrayed as easily decieved into thinking the worst of others, or enjoying piling onto other people's misfortunes. It definitely made me rethink my consumption of tr*shy reality tv shows.

Finally, I love how the author weaves together seemingly unrelated threads into a single beatiful tapestry. Details that seem like pure world building evolve into important plot points. In one of the author's translated posts, she explains how she first writes 100k words before deciding if a story is worth telling. The effort really shows - I felt the story was much more engaging and rich than many web novels tend to be.

Overall, I was really impressed by this book. It was funny one moments, heart-rending the next, and leaves a lingering bittersweet flavor that's hard to forget. <<less

My favorite part of this novel

1. The BL element is thick. Unlike other xianxia genre novels, in the first chapter you can feel BL from the point of view of Moran who tends to be pe*verted and really worships Shimei. Usually danmei xianxia needs more than 50 chapters even 90 chapters until the MC realizes he is gay. But not in this novel

2. Spicy. Almost every chapter has a spicy and hot part, so for a pe*vert like me, I really enjoy Moran's dirty mind (okay I'm a pe*vert, sorry)... more>>

3. Broke my heart. Because of the nature of moran, he unknowingly makes ML heart broken. If someone said this novel made you cry, then yes. They have a point too

What I don't like about this novel novel

1. I think this novel has a plot that is too long-winded. Very ineffective. Most xianxia novels are slow, but I feel tormented by how slow the progress of this novel is. I feel like the author is adding details that are not really important/needed

2. The way the author writes flashbacks is confusing, so I have to review the previous section. I mean if you want to include a flashback, can you just cut out the previous part? Then after the flashback is finished, you can continue the next scene. <<less

Meatbun loves to surprise us with plot twists like MWY is both a butterfly boned beauty and a Nangong (, as well as the reversal stone for Yuwu) but these plot twists are too random and they aren't presented neatly.

There are barely/no good foreshadowing/s about these suddenly popping surprises.

Meatbun's plot execution isn't flawless.

But other than that, 2HA is just too lovable!!!!!!!

I would like to rate it with more than the stars it have. A mind blowing masterpiece.

Anything that's needed to make a novel profound is presented in it. Drama, twist, love, hate, angst, generosity, cruelty, even smut everything. While reading you're gonna experience roller coaster of emotions. (^▃^)

My heart ached for Chu Wanning (ML) , he was portayted amazingly. I just loved him. Mo Ran (MC) 's past & what he had gone through in life didn't allow me to hate him either, everything he did whether bad or... more>> good both had meaning of its own. First you're gonna hate him, then you're gonna love him, at last you're gonna cry for him. Mo Ran and Chu Wanning have one of the saddest yet most beautiful love story I've ever read. They are soulmates that nothing can separate them, not even time or death itself. What's mean to be is mean to be,

"Two lifetimes and both of them belong to you" (༎ຶ⌑༎ຶ)

Well, I couldn't differentiate who's MC & who's ML... both of them was equally important.(╥﹏╥)

Past, present even future everything was interconnected. Even a trivial plot or situation had great effect on further plot in this novel.

Every character had their own story, that helped to understand theirs feelings, why they had done what they had done, and grasp each plot perfectly.

Finished reading a year ago thought that I may not be able to explain what I wanted to, so didn't review it but it's something you don't wanna miss, worth reading it's a best novel I have ever read இ﹏இ <<less

This is the story about MC's rebirth (seme) , he came back to the time when he was just a disciple, when everything was normal and from there starts his journey of self redemption. Alot of misunderstandings from his past life comes to light, misunderstandings were most frustrating parts of novel , it's honestly a roller coaster ride of fantasy, parallel worlds, cultivation, gore, mature scenes, love, hatred , angst.

What I like about this novel is, it never gets boring, not a single chapter makes you... more>> want to skim through it. There were some twist and turns that were completely unpredictable. At first I hated MC, later I literally cried for him. His character development was commendable.

I loved ML from the start, he is very kind and thoughtful, although timid when it comes to his own feelings.I also cried for him too.

Side characters were also memorable had their own back stories added I also cried for few of them lol.

It would be great to know more about how ML fell in love with MC though.

I recommend this novel 10\10 but if you are sensitive this novel might not be for you. <<less

This series is amazing. First of all, the translator, rynnamonrolls, does an AMAZING job getting the tone, noting and explaining word play (which meatbun seems to use a lot) and explaining cultural elements (ie food, which meatbun *also* uses a lot as a language of love). There's is an edited MTL floating around out there, but I'd recommend taking your time with rynn's work.

The book itself is really good. In general it's a joy to read, though the number of knives it comes with can't be understated. Still, I was... more>> really quickly cheering for Mo Ran's redemption and as he slowly realizes his feelings for Chu Wanning.

Spoiler

To be frank while assessing with "irl" morality Mo Ran's misdeeds are too much for me to actually excuse. He's redeemed in some ways (ie on the personal level towards Chu Wanning 2.0) but otherwise I think he still isn't really the greatest person. Like, he realizes that Chu Wanning didn't hate him but if he didn't know that it was okay for him to be horrible?

Not entirely true since he feels regret instantly upon time travelling back but... I'd recommend for fully enjoying this story, separate the "irl" morality a bit and rely more heavily on the novel's implied morality, if that makes sense.

[collapse]

I would say that while the r*pe scenes and such do serve a purpose (ie as emotional knives, and for understanding Mo Ran better) they are also a bit gratuitous. It's still worth a read if you find noncon stuff a turn off, but especially the beginning chapters will be a bit of a struggle even if it's all in flashback. Most are skippable if you're fine with loosing a bit of emotional nuance though, I think, if you can stomach it its all worth reading.

I second other reviews that everything is starting to fall in place in the second half though I'm not all the way there yet~ Translation this well done takes time TTwTT <<less

This is me complaining abt the novels. I didn't finished it so It might be my fault for judging the MC too early but yeah I couldnt bring myself to finished it. If you love angst, this is for you. Enjoy 🙂

Spoiler

While everyone keep admiring this novel, I just can't. It's too painful for me. I mean like I can't forgive him for treating his shizun like that. Even if it was because of misunderstanding but it just too cruel. Ik he has a character development, and I know he tried to changes himself but I keep being reminded of his past self.

Maybe I am the one that are too small minded but I just can't continued knowing his past deed.

I read lots of yaoi yandere novels that contained ab*sed, violence and so on. I'm okay w them all but maybe it because how he's been humiliated and he's the one that killed the ml. I just hate him genuinely. He didn't do it in the name of love.

He doesn't deserve ml. I mean like if he really love his brother in the previous life, why does he still have s*x with someone else.

Yeah, I could accept any tag except harem. I hate cheater and I hate people that shared their partners 🙂.

A lot dramatic but absolutely worth the read. I love love love Mo Ran 2.0. He's husband goal for any gender. The author did such excellent job with his character development. He's so complex, dedicated, tragic, tender, kind, sweet, and so good.

I also loved the relationship between the two mains. Their mutual pining for each other, their mutual passion for each other, their mutual dedication... So perfect.

Spoiler

My favorite scenes are the bath pool scene when they met again (by accident and totally naked, might I add) after five years in which Shizun slept to recuperate his soul and Mo Ran waited for him, filling up a book with letters to him. And, also the mutual lusting in the village arc, and a bit later when they finally confessed to each other. Their actions and reactions are so funny and sweet and perfect.

[collapse]

But keep in mind that it's not all sweet fluff. This book is gritty and gory. It has non-consensual s*xual situations and r*pe, torture and ab*se.

Spoiler

In the first life, the s*xual relationship between Shizun and Mo Ran was non-consensual. I typically hate s*xual ab*se between the two mains and tended to avoid these types of story, but the author wrote this novel so well that instead of being affronted, my heart aches for them instead. And much later on, the author completely explains why Mo Ran went on the bloody path he did in the first life (a curse that he doesn't remember), and it was so tragic and yet so selfless, and it was done out of love and protection for his beloved Shizun.

The story had a very good character development. The pacing of the story is a bit slow but that's just my personal preference. It kind of makes me wanting for more and curious for more. The mention of trigger warning on certain chapters is very much appreciative, cause I found it can be a bit triggering when people did not put tw where it should be; thank you very much for that.

For the new readers of 2HA, yes it is a next level angst. You want fluff? Heh.

Also the characters... more>> is very well written. I could learned a couple of life lessons from the characters which is always fun. My most favorite character Xia Sini, :). Least favorite would be Rong Jiu, cause even in life there's always some person like him whose, survival instinct is skyrocket that it even reaches pluto.

Even though, the story haven't yet finished being translated, I just knew that it's going to be fantastic.

About Mo WeiYu and Chu WanNing, I felt like they really are something. Something that you can't really described despites, cause whatever it is, it exceeded the human vocabulary. Maybe we shall ask for Mo-zongshi wrote a new dictionary for us about they relation. <<less

I have a love-hate relationship with this novel. From the first time I read it and then the other times I repeated it, it never failed to gouge out my heart, throw it on the ground and stomp on it. From the start to the current chapter I read, my mood has been fluctuating and though there are some chapters I skimmed due to the pain and angst that I feel, I couldn't give up on it. There are quite a lot of mysteries that need to be solved and to be answered.

I love Shizun's character and more often than not, want to just simply rush and hug him and fill him with warmth and love because he deserves it. He's portrayed himself as unfeeling, unbending, cold and prideful but he is more than that. He's kind and gentle and a worrywart who is upright and would not hesitate to give up his life for those few people he care about. And that's why his character is one of my favorites. He keeps forgiving people and doesn't expect much from them and that part of him pains me greatly.

With Mo Ran, I love the way his character was fleshed out and how human he is portrayed. I understand why he did the things he did especially after the reveals were made. Fate was indeed cruel. Despite it all though, I have lingering hate for him and I still can't forgive Mo Ran completely for all the things he said and did to Shizun even when I know he isn't completely to blame. This is one part that shows just how well he was written.

Honestly, I hold a grudge simply because Shizun doesn't want to and would not. Tsk.

The other characters are also good and are not simply there for show. They all have their roles to play in making the story continue. Even Shi Mei whom I loathe has his own reason for existing (doesn't mean that I don't want to throw him out of the story). Mengmeng is adorbs and right from the start, he was the one who saw through the haze that Mo Ran couldn't when it came to how well his Shizun treated him.

There are many chapters that made me keep tearing up especially from chapters 80 - 119.

Spoiler

That scene when Shizun carried Mo Ran walking almost three thousand steps without his cultivation and the trail of blood left behind, and then the part when the truth was revealed and I found out exactly how much his heart had been gouged and I just...

This story is worth it. Even the copious amount of tears I shed for it was worth it. Really worth it. Just prepare a lot of tissues and expect to grit your teeth and curse the characters and sometimes cuss even the author out because of the developments in the story.

honestly, I haven't read this novel. But I can guarantee that this is one of the best bl novel out there.

i hate angst, that's the reason I haven't read it myself.

the plot and character, as well how the author write this story, can make you really feel what the characters feels. While most of the other novel usually just write things simplicity but this novel will give you every detail it needs. Every detail that has a meaning.

at first, like the other reader, I find the title is so cute... more>> that I thought this is another sweet story for me. But as the time went by, I got this bad feeling that this will be a total heart-wrenching. And I was right. Eventually I drop this story, for now.

i hate angst, really hate it. I can't stand how the MC or ML suffer for too long. They have to quickly found their happiness!

but this novel really too good to be abandoned.

so I advice you to read this until the end, and don't forget to prepare tissues, a LOT of it. <<less
