The Lazy King

By the time I realized it, I had reincarnated into another world.

I kept sleeping, and at some point I became a Demon Lord.

Even though I never wished for it.

But for me to not have to work, this world is the best. It must be true that good things happen to good people.

The flavor of Sloth is as sweet as honey. Glory, diligence, virtue, or honor. I have no interest in anything like that.

What’s there to hide? The Lazy king is… none other than me.

This is pretty bad for how highly it is rated. It spends a lot of time on tedious world building, but the world doesn't sound very interesting. The MC is intentionally boring since his entire shtick is not doing anything. The side characters all being demons focused on a specific sin makes them one dimensional and boring and so much time is spent on them. Much of the story is barely coherent. That might be a translation issue, but I've read stuff that appeared to be more sloppily translated and... more>> still made more sense.

It seems rather apt to describe reading this with one of the MC's lines- it's a pain. <<less

Read this years ago and I can only say that this was quite the ride, a very beautifully written piece and I’m not surprised this reigned at near the top of novels for this many years. The title is as it suggests, the lazy king but it features a little more to that than you’d expect, mainly the side characters which I do enjoy. The side characters believe, what they eventually turn back to when they realize their efforts can be more appreciated by being who they were meant to... more>> be, and the overall treatment and understanding on our MC as the chapters goes on, uncovering his strength and somewhat of why he reigns “supreme”.

For the ending I will say

Spoiler

It is very bittersweet yet very fitting for this story AND the character, hell I would actually say no better ending would suit the MC, with him getting his well needed rest after the short yet eventful battles that he had to force himself to involve himself in. We get somewhat decent closure on the side characters and how they inevitably should treat the MC, a somewhat pitiful sleeping beast of a demon that should be allowed his rest.

Yep, this novel is different. No crazy growth, no saving the world, no revenge story. But at the same time for me, it is very deep and stays aside from dozens of other novels I have finished.

I enjoyed the idea of the demons governed by their sins. And the idea of superbia being strong only while they believe they are better than the opponent.

And that sensation of solitude. I don't remember the protagonist talking about that, but that sensation followed me throughout the novel. It was sad and beautiful.

I hope... more>> you can enjoy this novel as much as I did. <<less

This light novel wasn't really to my liking as the pov focuses more on the side characters rather than the MC and the ending was a little bit bland I honestly wanted to see the conversation between his maid and the demon king about his long sleep

I don't get the positive reviews for this novel. People say that it's written fantastically when in essence it's not. The story is written in a fashion that makes you want to fall asleep halfway through the paragraph. The author is clearly on some form of medication as he writes 3 paragraphs to describe nothing. While, spending entire chapters on information that isn't retained after 5 minutes of reading it.

Characters are not likeable. Especially, the main character. You can tell when a light novel is sh*t when you remove the... more>> main character and there would be no difference in the story telling.

The side descriptions/story that doesn't follow the MC is forgettable and flat out boring. The world building and structure of the various powers is laughable. The seven sins being introduced as a power that gets progressed by the holder's dedication? Only an idiot would think this is feasible for actually sustaining a civilization/world. <<less

It has some good sense of humor but if I count it, it really is just a little. This is quite a unique novel I've read so far that the author is trying to give everyone their own point of view but ends up a tragedy. MC not even felt like an MC he felt more like a side character. He only pops out to end the arc of the story then sleeps again. In the end I really didn't enjoy reading the novel. Not a recommendation for me.

It's short but full of personality and excellent world-building. It actually creates a fantastic world of demons and angels which feels like a realistic take on the concept where demons get stronger by following their desires aligned with the seven sins. Solid novel for me, truly a hidden gem.

Don't let the generic title and offputting picture fool you into thinking this gonna be another bland power trip fantasy, The Lazy King is a real gem that is worth taking the time to read.

Probably the most interesting thing about this novel is that while it centers around the protagonist, it rarely ever directly involves him. Instead each chapter follows a different character's perspective of the plot so it's up to you to piece together the world and the relationships within. It's a fun concept to push the story and... more>> it creates good anticipation leading up to major plot events.

The chapters can be quite long though so the character's thoughts tend to ramble on a little, and while each chapter follows a different perspective of the same plot the author doesn't use this to create an organic timeline relative to the plot progression. It creates this jarring effect where the build up to the climax get's abruptly stopped and you're forced to go back in order to understand a new character's perspective.

It also ends rather abruptly too. The ending makes me think that the author perhaps had a lot more to say but didn't have the time to truly flesh out his ideas so he pushed some of these concepts in at the end.

Overall it's a solid story with interesting characters, miles ahead of other titles with the word 'Lazy' in it. It really The 'Lazy' King. <<less

A masterpiece.

Different POV all interesting with lifelike characters.

We can feel the differents Sins, and not just low quality, the real ones.

... more>> I have read this book little by little over several years every time I was feeling empty.

Today I finally completed it as I have reached an extreme emptiness.

This novel has let me experience all of those different extreme emotions, but none were as great as Acedia and Melancholia.

This book resonates with depression and lets the reader experience something deeper and greater.

This is a delicacy that should only be enjoyed when the time requires it.

It is time for me to bid this book adieu.

Leigie Slaughterdolls and all the others are already a part of me, I am satisfied.

Thanks for everything. <<less

Just like another 2 volume WN I've read (Evil Average God), here we have a story about a seemingly OP Demon Lord, who just wants to chill in his domain and nothing else... Is what this story initially comes across as. But as this short tale shifts between various perspectives, it becomes clear that this is a collection of anecdotes, about demonic beings, going through their own existential crisis. The 1st volume executes on this very well but the 2nd volume tends to meander a bit. The classic "7 Deadly... more>> Sins" manifests here and it happens to offer up a rather interesting power system. <<less

Translation: good.

Plot: good.

Characters: good.

... more>> Development: nah.

Tho everyone says that this story is amazing and a gem, this story makes me feel even more lazy ? The MC didn't even do anything except eat, sleep, bath, repeat. And he only works and partake actions when odds are not with his allies. I can't continue reading this cuz it's all about the thoughts of all the characters and a few of the MC. ? Tbh I just skipped unnecessary paragraphs. If you're the type of person who's impatient, focuses more on the MC, don't care about the other characters, wants plot progression like me, then this is not ur cup of tea. Tho I learned a few things, as chaps pass by, it makes me feel bored. <<less

The novel doesn't show much on the protagonist view since it will be pointless. The MC is pretty much op.

I will give it a much higher rating if the MC is shown on the novel a bit more.

The story is more on the side characters stand, the chapters on which portrays another point of view is just the repetition on the last chapters. On my opinion it's plain boring, but unique in some sense.

I recommend this to anybody who likes reading pointless things.

The best thing I remember reading, although there aren't many chapters, they are long and satisfying. It's undoubtedly brilliant, the effort the author put into creating a world, and a unique story with nothing like it. Truly a masterpiece, I would recommend reading it to anyone, even if you don't usually read webnovels.

How do you write a book where your main character does nothing but sleep? By having it be about all the side characters around him. Seriously, 90% of the second volume the main character doesn't even make an appearance. And even when he does show up for most of that he's just sleeping like a log. And even than because his personality is bound by his traits he basically has the personality of a brick lying on the side of the road and isn't allowed to have ANY interests or... more>> thoughts. While all that follows the worlds rules that the author made, and I can respect that, it just doesn't make for an interesting read to me.

Also I'm not certain if I liked the ending or not. Maybe because it didn't really feel like much of an ending I guess.

First volume was a LOT better I do have to say. Second felt like a lot of time was wasted on pointless stuff. <<less

This is one of those hidden gems that you read and then think about years later, regretting that there isn't a sequel to this story, even though the ending has clearly set itself up for a sequel. Yet I occasionally check whether there is one

Unfortunately, years later there isn't a sequel and the author's other works are sub-par in comparison

One of the best novels on this website. Don't let the short chapter count fool you, each chapter is as long as 10 regular chapters in other webnovels.

Overall, it has incredible characterization; each main character and side characters are given detailed descriptions of their thought process and backstory; it truly makes them feel 'real' even though their nature as demons dominated by their chosen sin makes their actions inconceivable to us. The story also has elements of "OP character" ofc, as our MC is nigh unbeatable with his strength, but... more>> his Sloth nature and the focus on world-building and characterization raises this far above the cliche masses.

The ending in particular, is truly fitting. It is not jarring, it perfectly suits the characterization of each character so far, but at the same time it is hard to call it a 'good' ending in the 'they lived happily ever after' sense. The MC is a nihilistic demon after all, and the ending reflects that.

All I can say is, give this novel a try. Easily one of my favorites on this site, alongside Kidnapped by Dragons, The Second Coming of Gluttony, Ascending Do Not Disturb, Three Days, The Regressed Demon Lord is Kind, SSS Class su*cide Hunter, and Forty Milleniums of Cultivation. <<less

Web novel review. This could've been a decent read, but the story suffers from the writer's poor ability. The major thing is that the tone is all over the place--the first chapter makes you think it'll be a decent comedy, and I did enjoy that first chapter, but right after that you'll get major whiplash from the author suddenly trying to shove a serious story into what is obviously a comedic situation (lazy guy gets reincarnated a Sloth demon lord, doesn't want to work). It doesn't help that he has... more>> the personality of wet cardboard, either. There's some decent potential in the story such as
Spoiler

the MC's amnesia as a result of his Sloth class, which I thought was done well when the story makes it seem like he just woke up in a new world, only to casually reveal a couple chapters later that he's been there for millennia, but he just can't remember anything because of Sloth. It really added a nice touch of incomprehensible horror and dread to his character

[collapse]
, but it's not executed well to be enjoyable. I think this would've been better if the author focused more on the comedic aspect rather than trying to make it a serious story, which is what nearly the entirety of v1 is.

Overall it's not worth reading, but at least if you do decide to read it, it's not a huge timesink. The author probably didn't know what he wanted to do with the story either, seeing as how it's barely two volumes long.

Translation: The TL is passable. Awkward and stiff, but it at least doesn't read like a machine translation, just a guy who really needs a proofreader. <<less

Great writing, interesting and fleshed out characters, an original plot that combines comedy and action and to top it off an ending that makes me question my existence.

10/10 novel - I highly recommend it!

A great novel but MC feels like a side character.

Things revolve around him but at the same time don't ever involve him. The lazy King is nothing like the image description, he sleeps all the time but he was still more interesting than all the side characters. I was more interested in MC's past and how he got to this point and his skills but much of it is skimmed over or ignored completely in favor of multiple side characters.

Ending is more of a tragedy.

If you’re looking for some power fantasy, (which you probably aren’t considering the title) this definitely isn’t for you. The main character of this story is one of the most unique I’ve ever seen, narrating only 2 or so chapters of this story, and spending the rest of the time asleep. Even though that may sound strange, the author does an extremely good job of expanding the rest of the cast instead. The entire world under his liege and around the underworld is a place that you can properly... more>> understand, even when you don’t have a map of the land. The abilities of his subordinates and the dialogue they have with each other already makes up for half the story, with subtle (and not so subtle) foreshadowing often coming from it.

Spoiler

This story has no fairy tale ending or sappy love story, instead it tackles the feeling of a man with no purpose to live. A god among ‘man’, in reality is just alone. There is no one to stand by the side of someone so powerful, and as such, he can only grow even more powerful alone.

[collapse]

With a powerful ending and even more powerful story, this is one of the few series I would give 5 stars. <<less
