To save the hopeless Dark Fantasy World, I held back my tears and destroyed the world, then killed the Demon King and returned.

Now, I’m trying to save the world using the “System” I gained as a “Regressor’s Privilege”… But the Main Heroines have also awakened their own memories of the previous timeline.

God damn it.

All heroines are s*upid heroins are already weak from start and they are creating difficulty for MC and then because of backlash then MC has to save them, , , , heroins are burden who are making MC path more difficult which is already very difficult, , MC system is also shitty and world building is also illogical and worse or can be said small world where only 1 empire and demon king is there what a cliche

Main Heroines is a fantastic webnovel. Its strongest point imo is undoubtedly its plot twists and meticulously written overarching mystery.

There is this big complex mystery surrounding the whole story starting from its premise, and its very intriguing. When you go back and reread after a while, you realize that everything is foreshadowed really well with so many hints sprinkled throughout the whole novel. But even though we get so many puzzle pieces, it is still difficult to piece them together to get a grasp of the bigger picture. Once you... more>> think you've understood it, another curve ball comes and you have to rethink your premises. Its so fun to speculate about this novel and see the theories others cook up. This is one of those novels I prefer to read as its being translated than binge once its completed.

But even if speculations and mystery is not your cup of tea, this novel can still be very enjoyable for its interesting premise, characters and drama. Compared to many other novels, the heroines here are proactive and their actions constantly influence the direction of the plot. Most of them are also competent and clever, which makes it quite enjoyable to see their pov. The main character is another interesting one. He is a very kind and selfless person at heart, but his role forces him to be cunning, manipulative and evil. Its interesting to see the effect this has on his psyche. Although it hasn't been explored nearly as much as I'd like it to be, I think it will come into play later. Finally, antagonist (s). Having good antagonist (s) is essential to keep a story like this exciting for me. I won't elaborate due to spoilers, but from what I've read so far, the potential here seems high. The drama is decent and emotionally loaded, but the writing can definitely be seen as needlessly melodramatic at times, and also lacking some subtlety which weakens the delivery for me (for this reason I feel like this story would work much better in a visual medium). But I also think the writing is improving as the story goes on.

The only thing holding this novel back for me was the amount of love interests there were, and how their development fell into the same pattern that revolves around the MC. And I really wish it didn't cause these are genuinely interesting characters with other things going on for them. Finally, the pacing is pretty damn good. Almost every chapter has something that fuels speculation about the mystery or some unpredictable turn of event that makes the story more fun, and like user araragiKun mentioned, the author doesn't drag on points for too long, which is so refreshing for a drama laden novel like this.

Overall, this is a really fun webnovel I'd recommend if you enjoy a well-paced complex multilayered mystery, competent characters, unpredictable plot development, and some harem romance. <<less

In the first few chapters, I was thinking that it is the same old self-sacrificing cringy novel.. I even thought of just dropping it but now that I have read even the first 30 chapters, I can see that the premise is very unique and the characters are actually good.

The story flows logically till now. Although, I don't know how it will end right now, it is definitely the most unique story I have read in a while.

The translation is good. The pacing is good. In fact, unlike other authors,... more>> the author of this story doesn't like to drag one point for too long.

Spoiler

For instance, when his butler Kania discovers his secret, I thought that they will take a lot of time or never reveal it to the MC but surprisingly, it doesn't take long for him to notice it.

First of all this is a good novel, nothing to say about traduction, grammar or storytelling, what really put me off however is how the MC is like a patient under intensive care, spitting blood and ill literally every chapter while the heroines around either feel guilty or hate him.

Its like watching a fish struggle on land and slowly die, thats just depressing

All I have to say I rate it to infinite/infinite= (10/10)

Very good story, it already taken over my tops favorite novel. Well expect for "i was caught up in a hero summoning but that world is at peace" which is my number 1, and this novel is my second.

It also way better than other novel, where the MC pretend to be a villainess.

I really like this story but before I go into what I like I'm going to talk about my biggest gripe with this story first so It can be a negative and then a stream of positive since this is honestly a great read.

The system is a big plot device and kinda takes my immersion out of the story. I understand the need for the system but the system of false evil is really restricting which makes it hard to read the story at times. I get that he has... more>> to act evil to get points but other than the Hero Armament potential unlocked and item shop it feels pointless. The staff in the skills helps in being a false evil rather than actually helping him in a fight which makes me question if the item shop and Hero armament weren't there what would be the point of this system? It just feels jarring and unhelpful, especially with how damage the MC gets from the penalties
Spoiler

I never like unprompted long-time skips I'm okay with a week time skip but MC was a potato for 3 months because of the system penalty

[collapse]
Hopefully these criticisms get fixed as the system increases in rank.

Well, this story is actually amazing. MC is the descendant of an Isekai Protagonist and he was fully aware of his destiny and what he needs to do to reach a happy ending the other thing standing in his way are the people who he wants to protect most, ironic I know. The heroines also getting their memories from the regression is a nice little touch of spice that gives MC's memories about the future a hint of unreliability which is nice and Frey ain't no wuss. He is a full-fledged warrior who is ready to play the fool to further advance toward his own ending even if it means he has to go against the world. He is at times mentally unstable which gives him that extra touch of humanness to counteract his inhumanely righteous nature and it is heartbreaking to read him hurt his loved ones and go against the nightmare ordeals. He is legitimately a good MC that isn't a 1-dimensional self-insert and it's great to read about his determination.

Of course, a big part of this novel is THE WAIFUS and we got plenty. My favorite at the moment is Kania since I have a thing for girls in suits but Serena seems like she is a strong contender to take my best girl spot. All the others are great too it's just we haven't seen their cute side yet due to them hating the MC but there all still cute in their illustrations (Go join the Genesis discord to look at them along with other character illustrations) so it's a fun read and I look forward to the direction the story goes into. <<less

5 Psychologically, the series sometimes challenges the reader. You can clearly see the impact of the characters' hardships and problems on their mental health.

6 Our MC Frey has "Strong from the start" trait. He's already masters his power before series starts at his childhood. I'm nor going to discuss this if it's good or not for plot. But personally I think it was a right choice because the author was able to enter the main plot directly without losing time on "training arcs".

Very decent story with a good plot that's turned out better than I expected it to be, though the plot could be fleshed out more. Somewhat incoherent at places (author/TL fault? Idk) but those don't affect much at all. The writing also gets more fluid over time, so that's nice. Much better than most of the novels on here to be honest, especially certain corny series...

I would usually give a 4-4.5, but there are some reviews that weirdly compares and criticizes this novel for reasons which I can't really wrap... more>> my head around, so I'll give a 5 to balance it out just a bit. Like I get that it may not suit your palette, and 2.5-3 stars are still understandable, but putting a 1 star is just hating for the sake of it. The novel is always a Masterclass, but I'm currently frustrated with the author for one specific reason.

Spoiler

Initially I didn't want to make this comment, but now I can't take it anymore. The author is deliberately picking on Roswyn. At first, I was a little annoyed by her obnoxious behavior, but I thought that once she used her assistance system, she'd be fine. But for a while now I don't understand why the author is trying so hard to make her miserable. Already after the third trial, all the sub-heroines started to develop a certain interest in Frey, but strangely enough, for some reason she's the only one who's kept her hateful nature, and she, like the others, should have had memories of the trial. Then, when she finally becomes aware of and accesses the system, she is literally robbed of her ability to Glare (even if the system finds her more capable, they could have shared it), she is now demoted to the rank of spectator and her reason for living is no more. If the character has become obsolete, we might as well not mention her anymore and forget her, but no, the author wants to show us how miserable she is (I'm sure that since the author couldn't make Frey suffer any longer, he simply fell back on Ros).

Anyway, my opinion may not be objective because I love Roswyn, but right now I'm sick of seeing her like this. If anyone knows the ending, I'd love to know how she ends up (if she's happy or not).

Oh man, the intensity, the solitude, the depression, the burden, the suffering, the intrigue. As an active reader of the harem genre, I must say that this is one of the best WNs I've ever read.

The concept is really interesting, although I despise the game settings in a LN/WN, it's well executed here, and the way that the author does the flashbacks is really amazing, the story sometimes goes in a slow pace, but out of nowhere, the story goes as fast as the author wants, I'm not complaining, since... more>> I like the SoL elements and the interaction between the MC and the girls. Also, some plotwists are really impressive, the author takes care of every single detail to give the reader a satisfying surprise, I think that the best part from this novel.

Spoiler

I have gotten so into reading that seeing Frey suffer because of the game system and the imprudence of some girls from the main harem, has made me scream with frustration and almost make me cry, such a noble and martyred character doesn't deserve to suffer like this, and I agreed with Frey, Dark Tale Fantasy 2 is such a shitty game.

[collapse]

I have to say, I love proactive, overprotective and well written MCs in a harem, just like Otaru Mamiya from Saber Marionette or Aijo Rentaro from 100 Kanojo, and Frey has fulfilled all my expectations. He's so kind with all the girls, no exceptions, Even if they treat him like tr*sh and the biggest s*um ever, he will always treat them with affection and kindness, and protect them in the shadows, even if he has to pretend to be evil, he does everything possible to make them happy, even if he needs to carry that burden and suffer for all eternity.

Spoiler

There's 2 type of girls in this story: the main heroines and the sub heroines. The main heroines have every right to be angry with Frey, and I understand why they act that way (except for Serena, who is the only one who really loves him and is devoted to him from the beginning), but after thier redemption arc, is where they show how cute and kind they can be. The author plays his cards very well here, since it's not known in what point of the story the feeling of guilt becomes to something affective until it reaches the romantic, as long my boi is happy with Kania, Irina, Clana, Ferloche and Serena, I'm also happy too.

I didn't understand the introduction of the sub-heroines, but after the horrible way they treated Frey (especially Roswyn), and that "event", I agreed that Frey should distance himself from them, but the Frey's nobility goes first than his mission to finish that game. They're cute in their own way, and they have their redemption arc so it's okay.

[collapse]

The main villains reminded me of the villains of Mushoku Tensei, Anti-Magic and Arifureta, they're so well written with an annoying and quirky personality that they'll make you angry every time they had an interaction with the main characters, If you have read those LN, you'll know what I mean. *Wink* *wink*

tl:dr, if you "enjoyed" the mushoku tensei arc from volume 15 to onwards, with a more depressive, psychological and lonely atmosphere, where the MC just wants everyone to have a happy ending even if it costs him his own life, this is for you. <<less

The premise of this novel immediately caught my interest - a kindhearted hero forced to act as a villain and endure the hatred of those he loves most, all for the sake of saving the world. Frey's quiet suffering and determination in the face of such a cruel fate is both deeply saddening and extremely compelling to read.

What really makes this story shine is the excellent character work. Frey himself is admirably selfless yet still feels like a real, flawed person instead of a one-dimensional paragon. The heroines, despite initially... more>> being antagonists, are all distinct and well-developed characters whose eventual realization of Frey's true nature allows for fantastic emotional arcs and heartrending guilt/atonement storylines. The push-and-pull dynamic between Frey keeping his villainous persona despite the heroines learning bits of the truth creates addictive dramatic tension.

The world-building is also quite strong, establishing an interesting take on a typical fantasy setting being a deadly game-world that Frey must navigate carefully. My only real critique is that the frequent bouts of angst and tragedy can start to feel a bit emotionally exhausting without enough lighthearted reprieves in between the heavy moments.

Overall, this is a unique and poignant novel that blends psychological darkness with more traditional fantasy adventure. The emotional storylines really make you feel for the characters and their painful journey. As long as you're prepared for some serious drama and sadness, I'd highly recommend giving this a read for its gripping premise and character dynamics. <<less

This novel is a rollercoaster of emotions, not just a simple power fantasy or a tale where everything goes the protagonist's way. It's filled with tragic and depressing events, but it also has its share of heartwarming and joyful moments. The story moved me to tears multiple times, showcasing its deep emotional impact.

Frey isn't your typical overpowering character; he's relatable, sensible, and kind, yet trapped in a tragic situation that forces him to act as a villain. Despite this, his determination shines through. He's not just fighting for his survival,... more>> but for the well-being of those he cares about, even those against him. His unique circumstances, where he supports the heroines from the shadows while battling the constraints of his "Villain System, " add a fascinating layer to his character and the story.

The narrative is gripping and keeps you invested in the protagonist's journey. He's a Regressor with powers, but he's not invincible. He faces realistic challenges, trying to forge a better future while dealing with the heroines who've also returned to the past. His struggle to balance his imposed role with his true intentions adds a compelling complexity to the story, making it an engaging read that's hard to put down.

I can't call this a trainwreck, not when the train has clearly launched itself off of its rails and flown off into space. The outline of this plot is all over the place, it barely manages to maintain a semblance of coherence through it all but most of the scenes in this novel will leave you scratching your head.

But hey, you might still enjoy this novel so long as you can stomach the liberal usage of distasteful tropes such as mindbreak and mind control. In spite of the convoluted plotlines... more>> and the somewhat haphazard translation, this work still manages to be an entertaining read.

Oh, and one more thing to note is that this novel is rife with despair, mental illness and oodles of stress, if you're willing to overcome all of the aforementioned points, feel free to give this book a try. <<less

I'm really impressed with the quality of this novel. It got me totally by surprise. When you read the title and the sinopsis, what comes to your mind is a generic fantasy/harem/hero x demon king story, but the reality is way different. It's an excepcionally well written drama, where you can feel the characters pain. There are some comical scenes here and there, but the main focus of the story are the struggles the characters faces all the time. They are all really well written, with unique and distincts personalities.

The... more>> plot developent is awesome, totally different from the norm. It is really an unique take on the "hero x demon king" genre, so much so that you won't have an easy time trying to predict what will happen next, based on your previous experiences with this genre. There author did a really good job here. There are many mysteries from which you can't predict the answer cuz the author always comes up with something out of the expectations margin, and that's awesome, cuz make you want to keep reading it non stop.

About the drama, which seems to be the main focus of this story, there were so many scenes that made my heart ache for the characters and also cheer for them. Seeing the main character having to lie to the ones he love, and with that, and hurt them quite a lot, while he himself becomes equally or even more hurt in the process, without being able to ask anyone for help, without having anyone to confide to, having to shoulder all this pain and guilty alone and having his mind being torn apart little by little by it, is something that really touchs the heart of the reader. It makes you ask "how the hell this guy is able to keep going forward?". There was a certain event in this story, which I will call "second bad ending", that completely shredded my heart. For f*cks sake!!! I stayed awake till almost 4AM because I couldn't stop reading this sequence of events, and after that, I had some trouble to sleep... hahaha...

But nothing is perfect. If there is something I would like to complain about this novel, is how the author uses the concept of magic in its setting. As a fantasy setting, is quite obvious that magic would be a thing, and I, usually, have nothing against it. The problem starts when the author uses the concept of magic as a "joker card", as a "tool" he/she can use, whenever he/she can't come up with a reasonable solution to a given situation, making magic seem like some godlike power, but only when the author deems so. When the author needs, there is always an ideal magic to tackle the problem, but when it is not convenient for the author intentions, no ideal magic exists. And this is what happens quite often in this story, which really annoys me. <<less

The Main Heroines are Trying to Kill Me offers an intriguing premise of a regression storyline with a "false villain" protagonist. The main character, Frey, finds himself forced to walk the path of evil and deceit in order to save the world from destruction. This inevitably puts him at odds with the main heroines who remember the previous timeline and despise Frey for his villainous actions.

Despite the melodramatic setup, the novel delivers emotional depth and nuance beyond typical light novel fare. Frey grapples with difficult choices, inner turmoil, and the... more>> burden of being hated and misunderstood. His relationships with the heroines evolve in meaningful ways as their perspectives broaden.

The story contains plenty of twists and turns to keep readers guessing Frey's true motivations. Side characters also receive strong characterization, with shades of gray instead of clear-cut heroes and villains. The fantasy setting, while not highly original, provides an interesting backdrop for the unfolding drama.

Overall, The Main Heroines are Trying to Kill Me succeeds at subverting common tropes and cliches. Frey's antihero role reversal makes for a compelling, emotionally complex narrative. Readers who enjoy tragic melodrama and exploring the gray areas between good and evil will find this a highly satisfying read. Just be prepared for an angst-filled journey before reaching the hopeful ending. <<less

This is my first review, which is fitting considering this is the first light novel I read, and what got me into using novel updates and eventually making this account. All this is to say that The Main Heroines are trying to kill Me is amazing for one quality above all else, consistency. It is awesome. If you are the type that likes action-packed stories than this isn't for you. While there is action, I would say that the main theme is drama.

I saw a few people complaining about how the system is tr*sh and how MC is always sick; thats the point of the story. He has to save the world not only from the demon lord but also from the corruption in the empire while using that shitty system. If the system wasn't that way, this novel could have been 20... more>> chapters long lol. Also a spolier about the system for those interested:

Spoiler

it is revealed that the demon lord also has a system which is opposite to the Mc's. The demon lord has to make false good actions in order to gain false good points. So the MC and the demon lord are on the same boat when it comes to hiding their actions

My only criticism of this is that almost every character is female. There are male characters but almost none of them are important, they aren't even given names, just background characters. <<less

If you take a typical harem setting but make it so every character becomes as miserable as possible while providing just enough hope that they don't completely break then you get this novel. The story is pretty good and it gets very interesting once the focus starts on the mystery about the world and the system.

The MC is forced to play the villain but deep inside he is kind and sensible. All heroines have unique traits and personalities. They are also OP and not just damsels in distress waiting for... more>> MC to save them. Their unique abilities and 'past' help the novel move forward.

As far as the plot goes, it is not just simple 'I will kill all demons and save the world.' There are twists and turns and MC also suffered hardship and pain.

Pros-

No 2D characters.

Best girls (Serena).

The romance is good.

No OP MC.

Many characters have their own plans including the villains.

Cons-

Sometimes description seems too vague.

In conclusion, there are very good parts of the novel but there are a few boring and even annoying parts as well. There are times when I unknowingly fell asleep while reading then there were times when I eagerly want to read. <<less
