Star Rating: 1/5

  1. Did not finish, do not recommend
  2. Didn't like it for several reasons
  3. Okay, satisfactory
  4. Pretty good read
  5. This is going on my lifetime favorites
Setting: 2/5

  • Classic corrupt nobility causing major classist discrimination. The main character is a poor orphan and becomes friends with a duke's daughter Leti who ends up chosen as The Brave, who goes on a grand adventure without him to slay the Demon King. The story tells the struggles of the lower class pretty well. The socio-political landscape isn't explored much at all despite politics, economics, and other public affairs being major focuses of the plot.
  • The power system is not explained too well, all that really matters is that the Brave is really powerful both physically and magically, and the MC cannot use magic.
  • Overall, glosses over key details while establishing the setting, 2/5.
Main Characters: 1/5

  • Main character, Wynn Byrd, is boring. The main plot driving motive of the MC is to become a knight, and starts off incredibly strong because of his dedication to practice every day. However, he's kind of written like he has no flaws other than he can't use magic and he is a commoner. I can't say that there is much character development because those two things aren't really issues that he can work towards improving in this life. It feels like the author kind of wrote himself into a corner with the MC.
  • The side characters don't feel that important, just people to follow the MC around and either be like "Wow he's amazing" or "Ew he's a commoner who can't use magic".
  • Leti as a concept is pretty interesting, but the author doesn't really do much with her because she's also kind of a Mary Sue - she's perfect other than she favors this commoner who can't use magic. The author briefly explores how someone who was forced to be a child soldier would be traumatically affected, but in the end, that idea isn't really delved into much at all and feels like a wasted opportunity to flesh out Leti's character. I would have liked to read about how someone in Leti's position really felt, but I guess this isn't Leti's story.
  • Overall, very disappointing, 1/5.
Plot/Pacing: 1/5

  • The pacing is good, but god damn is the plot boring as f*ck, 1/5.
Overall Writing: 1/5

  • I think the author majorly f*cked up with the characters and ended up putting themselves in a situation where they couldn't write anything interesting with the characters because of how they're not written with the possibility of growth, 1/5.
Enjoyability Factor: 2/5

  • It was okay for the first 30 chapters, and then it got really boring.
  • I liked the concept but not the execution, and dropped it after 42 chapters, 2/5.

Despite being called "The Master of the Brave" due to the MC of the story, the MC has little to no development over 2/3 of the way in. In fact, this series reads more like a dry history book than a novel. There are large expositions about things that have zero influence on the story and as far as I can tell are there only because the author either can't or doesn't want to actually develop the characters. Hell, the main antagonist has more development than the "MC". I'd go... more>> as far as to say there are at least 3 or 4 characters that get more development. In addition to this, MC has no personality. I'm not even saying he has a boring personality, it just doesn't exist beyond "I want to be this perfect idealized knight no matter what but poor me I don't have magic so I guess I can't do anything".

The other major problem I have with this novel is that the MC seems to have zero agency or actual accomplishments. There's plenty of times other characters shine and do important things, but the MC just feels like he's along for the ride as a side character which is a pretty big issue for a novel that's named after the MC. You know what would have been neat? A novel about the main heroine and her past exploits framed in the time period they were actually taking place instead of having half a novel being taken up by people telling stories about what happened back then instead which is quite possibly the most boring way to tell a story. Oh, also don't worry if you decide to skim and miss something since you'll just be able to catch it the second, third, fourth, or even fifth time the author repeats the same information.

I'm going to finish the story just because of morbid curiosity at this point (will the author truly end the story with our "MC" still being a personality-less bystander?). I'd recommend anyone looking at this review to save your time and read something else, I'm so aggravated at this point that I had to stop reading just to write this review but I'm in the trap of not wanting to drop it because then I'll feel like my time was 100% wasted.

Fake edit: The translation starting with ch62 gets pretty rough and confusing which doesn't do the series any favors, ch1-61 were pretty good though.

Real edit: I forgot to mention, be ready to read how "incomparably beautiful, strong, and amazing" the main heroine is over multiple paragraphs about a million times because apparently the author needs to let you know that every person on the planet thinks so the moment they see her.

Final edit: I'm dropping my rating from 2 stars to 1 star (I can't seem to actually edit the stars, just know my real rating is 1 star). I'm at ch120 and despite trying my best to push through the last 30 chapters I've gotten to the point where every time I try to read more I end up staring at the wall since it's more entertaining than forcing myself to continue reading thus I'm dropping the series even with it feeling like a huge waste this close to the end. I had hope for the series up through about chapter 50 or 60 but it just ends up a huge disappointment in the end.

Seriously, just go read an actual history book or something since it would be about as dry but at least provide some real value. The exposition in this "novel" is just out of control. <<less

First time writing a review on this site. Here goes, a bit of spoiler ahead:

Spoiler

The MC is the sword teacher of the hero. He wants to become an adventurer (or knight, I dont remember since I've stopped reading long ago) but unable to do so since he lacked mana, an essential component in the world. He became the hero's sword teacher not because any major reason, just because he is their childhood friends. And it wasnt because he wanted to, or was forced to. It was all just a coincidence.

Time moves on and the MC still hasn't changed much, or any at all. His only change was the increase in proficiency in using the sword. But even this was inconsistent. Why? At one point, he was fighting with a sorcerer who hurled magic towards him and he shot it down with a throwing knife. Blah3 explanation on how he achieved that. But after that, he cant use it anymore, or more like the author may have forgotten about the setting. He is supposed to be unrivaled in the sword since even the so called sword saint is below him. But he is still weak as f*ck since he doesnt have magic? This frustrates me to no end. There was even a time he had been secretly assisted the hero where he lost against the enemy on horseback, WHILE using the sword with the enemy too using it. Like, the f*ck. How could you write about a whole story centering on him being the hero's sword teacher and showing he is proficient in the sword and throwing it out in the next.

The story seems to be concerned with anything but the the main characters.

The heroine returns as a beloved hero and... doesn't do jack shit.

Everybody knows that the MC is being f*cked over by corrupt nobles but she just doesn't do shit.

... more>> Oh she goes ''If I find out that is happening..''IT IS, EVERYBODY KNOWS IT, THEY ARE OBVIOUS AS f*ck ABOUT IT.

That said I must also call into question a few other reviews.

The MC is not op enough?

So what, can you truly not stand reading a novel were the MC can't just insta defeat everyone? <<less

Been years and finally I finished reading it.

Earlier translations were awesome. It was the first time I felt that words could make atmosphere feel so vivid to me years ago. The illustrations too, they moved me so much, oh how I would like to run with Wynn and Leticia in the streets of the capital every morning, swing our swords together, and share our moments as we grow up. Alas. Sigh.

I must say this but later translations are worse, so many misplaced words, wrong words, and sentence structures too feel... more>> misplaced that it'd make you feel out of place when reading.

To say some things about the novel would be its a bit lacking with the way it express other characters other than the MC, also the enemies feel rather underwhelming, and well the MC should have been stronger.

Most part of the stories are well explained though, despite there are things that would make you frown or lift eyebrows at first, it'd be later explained for it to be reasonable.

But well, love you Wynn, Leticia. <<less

the title seemed interesting "how grand of a man he has to be to teach THE HERO who defeated THE DEMON LORD all her skills surely. He must be a wise and talented man, I sure hope that the master and pupil have a sweet reunion and can live hapilly like a father and child"

honestly I expected this to be an old man who couldn't become a knight becouse of insufficient magic power to train the hero and reunite after the demon lord's death and spen time together develop a... more>> wholsome relationship like a father an daughter BUT OH MY OH MY I SHOULD HAVE LOOKED AT THE TAGS BECAUSE IT'S A ROMANCE AAAAAND THE MASTER IS JUST TWO @£$#ING YEARS OLDER THAN THE HERO

Spoiler

at the start I was dissapointed because the MC was just 2 years older than the hero but I overlooked it because a boy even though is poor and an orphan still finds a way to teain himself to chase his dreams was interesting when the hero appeared and they developed a big brother and little sister relationship I tought it was sweet I could actually read this BUT after the timeskip it bored the hell out of me I desperately waited them to meet but nope still didn't get interesting. The hero praised him so much on before so I tought "maybe he is got stronger too he is her master after all the sparred all the time when they were kids she got strong enough to kill the demon lord" I had some expectations of him but BOY he was weak I know he is strong if we don't compare him to the hero but she overwhelmed him they he did manage to at les-ast stand hi ground against her a little bit but that was all you would've expected him to at least parry or dodge and try to attack her NOPE he could only just block patheticlly and don't get me started on the romance part HE DOESN'T EVEN RECOGNISE HER EVEN THOUGH HE REMEMBERS HER FACE AND HAIR COLOR

[collapse]

i tried to force myself to like it but couldn't my biggest disappointment and the only reason I didn't is the title and the novel greatly differ if you gave it a completely different title it would match it better than this because HE ISN'T EVEN HER MASTER EVEN THOUGH SHE LEARNED EVERYTHING FROM HIM HE DIDN' TEACH HER THEY LEARNED TOGETHER FROM BOOKS AND TRAINED TOGETHER THAT ISN'T MASTER/PUPIL THAT IS CALLED BEING FRIENDS/TRAINING BUDDIES

I'm sorry I don't know if it gets better at the later parts but I can't read it anymore <<less
