Great characters, excellent world, story kinda of slow, but it's good to read. I don't read it in one go, but is still one of my favorites.

For the reviews I've read the story gets slower and boring... Till then I'll enjoy...

While I'm pretty frustrated that it's sometimes slow and the development in the romantic department is lacking. This novel is still really good. The MC is really OP, considered as the only "High Human" survivors. As the third volume is going, the main plot hasn't moved that much but it's slowly developing into a bigger thing. The "High Human" are highly seeked since they're blessed with much more knowledge than the actual world that has lost the game assistance and the skills that goes with it. It will involve a... more>> lot of political schemes and it will also hit your feels.

Mix of sweetness (or bitterness, there are some sad parts) and OPness. <<less

When SAO gone real, pretty much that the premise of the story... not realy. The MC is OP but he is not a show off. The pacing is a little bit slow, somehow frustrating but enjoyable. Overral, a good read. If you hate MC that is soft hearted and too OP then stay away from this.

Struggling to finish the first volume.

MC is way too OP right from the start. He's already no.1 player in the game, then he got transported to the game world with his stats boost up 10x. However, the state of the game world has been downgraded, worse than when it was just a game.
I like OP character but it bothers me when it's just a wish fulfillment of jesus complex. Perform miracles, give charities, and get praised. Also, the MC's personality is bland, scraping the already little interest I had.

I read this a long time ago when it had just begun translating and months before I realized it was harem (sorry y'all, harem makes me cringe now, I used to not mind it, but now? I think I have PTSD from it TT)

I loved it, then I got bored. You know why? You have this overpowered MC who is doing nothing of any importance. Why?!! I liked the flexing until that's all he did. Such an amazing character and yet he does nothing but flex.

I'm a little disappointed.... more>> It's so slice of life at times. And the MC takes care of challenges way to easily. I liked this novel a lot before volume 4. Still rating a 4 cuz I do remember enjoying it. Maybe it's a change of taste? <<less

It could've been great if the MC isn't procrastinating. All in all I still held a positive opinion for this novel and still will continue reading it. But I lose a lot of hype compared to when I first read it to now.

Started good, enjoyable, and interesting...

And slowly over the course of a few volumns it does all it can to ruin all three.

I would say everything up to volunteer.5 is worth a good read, maybe a bit of 6. But by vol 7 our op MC isn't so op anymore and his personality seems to get more and more bland with intersections of side comdey moments that feel out of place.

TLDR; if you like long battles, where everyone gets their screentime, think Arifureta but worse, I guess you'll like this. People sh*t on parallel world rhapsody but I enjoy that novel, but I also think it's way better than The New Gate.

So I started reading this because I liked the anime in the beginning. I gave this three stars mainly because I just didn't like how the author did pretty much everything, but it's not terrible. I guess you could call this just a battle novel, because that's what most... more>> of these novels are. Long, overdrawn battles, focusing on other characters in the middle of the MC's battle, then cut back to the MC's battle. Maybe a mid volume battle that leads up to the main battle and when the battle ends, the volume ends, no cooldown or anything most of the time. Almost dropped this at around Vol 16 or so because it's basically nonstop deus ex machina during fight scenes with maybe a drop of main plot. In my opinion it's the written version of watching a Highschool DxD battle but without the ecchi, but the MC is so overpowered he could finish it all in a split second but decides to throttle his power (stops doing this in the latter half of the volumes out) or the bosses get way stronger but still don't even far exceed the original strong monster in the first volume...

Now let's talk about the "romance". Sure it's kinda present in the first few volumes or so but if you're looking for even a slight bit more than the bare minimum, you'll have to get past vol 11 (backstory on Shin and his gf in the death game is the focus of vol 10 if someone wants any sort of backstory), other than that, it's just everyone in love with him and him being a dense MC who has eyes for only one.

big spoilers for romance Vol 12-20 and plot for 12-14ish :

Spoiler

He finally responds to schnee's feelings after she loses her memories because of an enemy using a player item on her. She gets her memories back and shin realizes he doesn't want to leave the world without her, so he decides to stay, then he confesses to her in the climax of Vol 12, basically says let's get married. Then they get some alone time in Vol 13 and 14 (Vol 13 s*x with a small dose of diabetes throughout) then either in 13 or 14 he talks about making a wedding ring with some rare item/material... but don't ever expect the ring to come up more than once or twice after that. Still hasn't made it after finishing vol 20 smh. Tiera and Milt are big supporting romance roles that get ignored for the most part. Sure a few serious scenes with Tiera and milt happen but maybe once for Tiera and a few times for Milt. Oh and Yuzuha but she's a loli most of the series so no attention. But the MAIN thing is any romance at all is officially suspended once all the support characters regroup... like they literally had s*x and are "married" but don't even sleep in the same room together or even spend time together with just the two of them until the end of vol 20

[collapse]

big plot spoiler for vol 20. To explain romance:

Spoiler

shin finally learns a lot about the truth of the world. He learns the 3 items he got when defeating Origin, in the death game, can be infused into one person to take them back with him to earth whenever shin gets randomly unisekaied. Essentially a piece of origin is in some dungeon boss that he talks to, Hades, who tells him that he'll probably get sent back to his own world when the game is shut down in his world. The New Gate world was formed by the Devs without knowing they were literally creating a lower tier world where the players influenced the entire new gate world. Origin, breaking out of the control of the devs essentially, uses all his power to rebel and trap the characters' spirit in the avatars and trap them there until shin kills him in the beginning of vol 1. Milt, since shin killed her and she wanted him to kill her in the death game, is probably gonna be able to go back to earth also, but I'm still confused on that part. Because Milt was about to die on earth, but wanted death in death game, Shin killing her did some magic and Milt's game body can go back even though Shin killed her in the death game... which kills the real body too. Now for Schnee, he tells her that he's gonna get forcibly sent back at random and that he can only bring one person, and he's gonna choose her. She accepts everything, even the fact that she'll be a human with a normal human lifespan when she crosses over. She takes the items into her body, they kiss and prepare to tell the rest of the party but then volume 20 ends

[collapse]

I know this isn't a romance novel, it's just if you're going to bring any sort of romance in, I don't appreciate it being introduced and then act pretty much like it never happened and nothing changed, for the next 8 novels. I can't even think of any LN or WN I've read where the ML and FL couple gets it on, and then literally never share even a room together afterwards in the many inns and stays in the tsuki no hokora (moon shrine) during journeys. If you didn't know, they move countries/cities literally every novel. <<less

I really wanted to like this novel due to the interesting story baseline and overall pleasant atmosphere of the MC and his companions. However, two major flaws manage to make this novel almost unbearable.

First off we have the driving force of the novel being the commonly seen "MC wants to return home to his own world", but we get no reasons for why he so desperately wants to return. From the start of the novel we don't get to see any interactions whatsoever with other players or any important previous... more>> relationships besides some vague hints of a promise he made a long time ago. And we're just supposed to accept that this promise is important enough to not just settle down in the world where he is basically a demi-god, have everything he could ever need for a fulfilling life and also still have people he clearly cares about. I, for one, am not convinced and think he's just being cruel to his companions by bringing them along on an adventure with the goal being to leave them behind.

Secondly as a lot of other reviews have pointed out, the way he handles his powers by "hiding" his strength makes no sense at all. Supposedly he wants to find information about returning to his own world, but to get that he needs to get permission from various world powers to access their libraries etc. So instead of just using his powers, legend status, massive wealth or incredible personal connections he decides to hide his god-like powers to avoid getting caught up in troublesome things, but still shows juuuust enough to make any perceptive person interested enough to get him involved in anything currently going on. This just leaves him in a constant uncomfortable middle ground where he's always caught up in troublesome side quests but is also determined to never use his full powers to just solve the trouble immediately.

That said, it can still be a somewhat enjoyable read if you're bored enough and turn off your brain for a while. <<less

I quite enjoyed this novel for its story and simple plot. Nothing really stands out and makes this novel really special but it's fun none the less. The only problems I have with it are the MC dosen't use his powers in a way that would make sense, meaning he could solve all his problems by letting even a fraction of his power be known but he doesn't which is both s*upid and boring. The other problem is the arc/volume where we see into his past and get to see... more>> his grim dark edgelord phase which while it is explained it was also the most boring and difficult to read section that almost made me drop the novel.

Tldr good but not great and a little wordy and boring at parts. <<less

The story could've been great but the execution is too poor. It's like watching a wet tissue paper of a character interacting with the world. He's too f*cking bland.

"The MC is very mature and has grown out of the Chunnibyou phase, unlike a lot of the readers who have problems with the novel."

That quote is from one of the reviewers that gave it a high score. Well, sorry for not liking an MC that's really f*cking boring. Sleeping is more favorable than reading his "adventures". Fight scenes are meaningless since... more>> we know that the MC won't really have any problems unless he dicks around.

The MC is shown as a blacksmith that can create ancient grade weapons, the highest grade, but since all the smithing he had done was when he was still inside the game, he has no actual skill as a blacksmith. The scene where he shows how he makes weapons when he went to the country of beastmen was laughable.

The only interesting thing in this LN is the lore of the world he got transported to. What happened to the world after the Dusk of Majesty.

Other than that, its pretty meh. It should have a slice of life tag since that's what this LN is mostly, anyway. <<less

Four volumes in and my direct impression of this is... it's too boring. It suffers from lack of direction. There's nothing wrong with having a powerful, godlike MC as long as you're willing to use him to enrich the world around him... Initially, the world is interesting (the NPCs have gained lives and sentience after being NPCs and he is the only player around to see the effects), but the author is far, far too meandering about it. I imagine that it can develop more and I'll continue reading, but... more>> four volumes in and there has been zero tension, no stakes, no progression towards a goal (him returning to the real world), no reveal of an antagonist, and what remains is slice of life and even that isn't so good. <<less

I was between a 3 and a 4 here. It's not a 5. It's got some problems, namely the fact that the protagonist is another weak willed pushover type when it comes to women. Godly powerful, still freaks out when within 25 feet of a b**b. And of course, despite this power, he feels the need to hide it. Which seems dumb when the actual princess of the country he's in knows how strong he is. Hiding his power seems silly and only exists to keep battles vaguely more interesting.

That... more>> said, the rest of the series is pretty good. The characters are interesting and have more going on than just being lifeless tropes. The female characters despite swooning over the MC don't come off as nearly as one-dimensional as most LN heroine's do. And they've kept the party small enough and have another male friend/comrade, thankfully avoiding the harem tropes pretty well.

What I really appreciate though is the world building. The travel and adventure aspects of this novel are fun and interesting, Weapons and smithing lore are fun. <<less

The story, while interesting, is badly written. The author likes to ramble and add unecessary paragraphs. The author, for example, spends a paragraph explaining the reason a group of highly trained knights from several countries working together isn't being unruly, is because they have someone of great renown/beauty working with them. I would assume it's because they're highly trained. The author adds in the extra sentence here and there. It reads like they were trying to hit a word limit rather than write a story. Of course this could all... more>> be because of the language difference that comes with translating a novel, but I've read several novels that don't have this issue so who knows. <<less

I wanted to read until the MC and the FL reunited, but the novel is riddled with filler and horrible writing that I couldn't. The MC foremost is a braindead fk, which honestly is the common meta of JPN writing but he's on a higher level. Everything he does, says, and thinks is completely against all of what his status and past experiences are. The amount of filler is already ridiculous, but the filler on these parts are especially atrocious and annoying to deal with. The Strongest character in the... more>> world. Takes 10 paragraphs to debate whether he could "protect" or "kill" something. Every character conversation also loses all of their iq, especially ones that have all the female harem flag characters with them. Everything is so fkng god dmn frustrating to read and skim out of my mind, holy god kwlslmnqwhgfvc <<less

Never fell asleep so many times reading a story since 'legend of the destroyer' on Wattpad (starting from volume 5 at least). Boring interactions with unneeded explanations just don't do it for me. And is the MC going to keep pretending to be as strong as that world's standards forever? Then what's the use of being so op?

The story feels like the military chief trying to fit in with a kindergarten students

The MC has no goal, yet does some useless shit, can anyone explain, why a level 100 monster wants to do a level 1 quest, why does he even need to join the adventurers guild, when he has no shortage of resources and can go wherever he wants and do whatever he wants

Does it makes sense for a college student to compete with kindergarten kids that's exactly what MC does

The story is portrayed as the MC... more>> is a kind hearted, righteous protagonist. But what I don't get is instead of helping a granny cross the road, wouldn't it be better if he built a country and improve the whole world

**The MC is strong, to the point that if all the strong characters in the world assaulted him at once, he will still walk out unscathed <<less
