The Obsessive Shou Moves On

In his previous life, Yun Qingci loved the Emperor more than life and death. When he was alive, he made soup and clothes for him, and in politics, he helped monitor his officials, even his family.

He was solely dedicated to the emperor, and all his scheming strategies were used to gain favour. He never borrowed his power as the Lord Empress to seek employment for his relatives, and he did not show favoritism. He can be said to be strictly impartial and incorruptible, not even recognizing his own family.

Outsiders were terrified of him, and relatives hated him, but Yun Qingci didn’t care. However, in the end, he was thrown into the cold palace by the only person he cared about and his whole family imprisoned.

Finally, he committed su*cide on that snowy day, and fell down that gilded tower.

Reincarnated, Yun Qingci retracted his claws, picked up the glass pieces of his heart, and conducted himself evasively in society. Acting as an escort to the Emperor for his relatives, he decided to become a proud Lord Empress that doesn’t need to be treasured or can have his status shaken.

Unexpectedly, the emperor who abandoned him like a shoe, praised by countless courtiers for both his virtue and kindness, suddenly changed his temper. He became cold and harsh, paranoid and cruel.

The servants who confronted Yun Qingci? He would beat them. The imperial concubines that provoked Yun Qingci? He’d punish them. A small person who framed Yun Qingci? He would kill him. When someone tries to approach Yun Qingci, he would become jealous to the extreme.

Soon everyone knew that Empress Yun was the emperor’s inverse scale. He was not allowed to be hurt, touched, or even looked at.

Yun Qingci, the fairy man, is speechless: So you like me not loving you, why didn’t you say that sooner?

I was expecting a fair amount of face slapping and then either MC finds love elsewhere or ML redeems himself. What did I get though? The entiiiire novel is one slap after another, until eventually at some point you subconsciously make a choice: stick to your guns and support the MC until the end, or choose what I did which is to switch to feeling way more bad for the ML.

Light spoilers ahead, you've been warned

So the MC is toxic AF. For the first third or half of the novel,... more>> you really only see what the MC's thought process is. Not that the POV never switches to the ML to see what he's thinking from time to time, but at this point it's still mostly fair that MC would be very upset with the ML. He loved and chased him for 12 years until he was put into the cold palace and committed su*cide. Pitiful right? What's so toxic? Well then we get to the second half where a lot more details are revealed, and it can hardly be called love, it was more like an obsession. He was always clingy, spoiled, and childish, making a mess for the ML everywhere. He threw away his family and friends so that he could focus solely on the ML. Those were his choices, but even after rebirth he still blamed the ML for literally everything and accepted no blame as to why their relationship failed.

The ML is not innocent either, he's also toxic AF. He completely failed to balance his responsibilities as an emperor and as a husband. Most importantly, he refused to ever communicate properly with the MC. MC's su*cide could have been avoided if he had just communicated. Then after rebirth, he uses his pain to influence MC to come back to his side and stay there, to start giving a sh*t about him again. At some point his psyche completely breaks down and he becomes so pitiful and sad that it's hard not to root for him now.

Still, I won't say why he's in pain, but I have to tell you that this man is crazy. He's crazier than MC in some respects. I don't see how this could possibly be construed as a love story. It's two psychopaths obsessed with each other and hurting each other and themselves.

I'm giving it a higher rating because I don't want to bring the novel down just because it portrays a toxic relationship. The writing quality is still pretty good, and the translator did an excellent job. As for the ending:

Spoiler

They end up together again. Because the relationship is so toxic, I refuse to label it as a HE. Even now, I can't say I support them being together, but at the same time, these psychos deserve each other -_-

While I believe this is not everyone's cup of tea I also believe that this is one of the stories whick is capable of keeping someone hooked on it. The story is exceptional, not to long, not too short and the characters are rich in one way or the other.

Although at first it seems like the MC is over acting and being dramatic, I guess after reading a few chapters into the story I have a better understanding where he comes from. I even liked how the MC's character is... more>> written and the character himself. The ML had his own reasons. I'm not justifying him in any case but there were times I felt pity towards him. The reasons for everyone's behavior is nicely and simply laid out by the auther and it's clear that both of them had problems and short comings.

The angst was the cherry on top for me. It's not everyday that you get to read perfect angsty stores like this where the angst flows at least half of the story and not rainbows and roses after one coaxing session.

If you are hesitating or not sure BUT you can stomach angsty tropes PLEASE give it a try. I would even go as far to say that this is one of the best I've read and a story I'd like to come back to again! <<less

Definitely worth reading when you're in the mood for some angst. Please be wary, a few parts could be very triggering for some. The relationship between the two leads is so fkd up. They're BOTH so toxic and hateful. The story is essentially them coming to understand each other, learning the difference between love and obsession and finding a semblance of balance in their dynamic.

I disliked both characters themselves, esp the MC - the word logic was never taught to him. The characters are flawed, they are selfish, irresponsible, uncommunicative... more>> and never try to build an equal partnership. Both of them are equally cruel though, hurting each other, hurting themselves and others.

The author did a great job with the story.. So much that I didn't mind reading the whole thing despite my initial hatred for the leads. Though you don't condone their actions you can see how they turned out this way. My heart broke over and over. We'd call them crazy but for the two of them, they were each other's lifeline. The only spark in critical moments in their lives, so they clung to each other. Their world is so full of each other, there isn't too much space for other characters. The stand outs are Prime Minister Yun and The Emp Dowager. The "second male lead" was just.. Around I think lol.

the dreaming of the past to see the partners suffering has been done in other works too but this one had me bawling gosh

This is one of the most flawed MCs I've encountered, but I actually liked that there was no Gary Stu/cinnamon roll to be found here. There were moments where I hated the MC, but I understood why he behaved the way he did. Both the MC and ML experienced a lot of trauma in their lives and the MC absolutely emotionally tortured the ML and I felt really bad for him. There was a point where I thought they should not be together, but also oddly enough I could see... more>> how they were made for each other.

I liked that one of the chapter reviews said, "their love language: stabbing and slashing themselves... so fit to be together". I also liked this line from the novel, "Li Ying hated his extremes, but Yun Qingci hated his indifference. Li Ying loved his gentleness, while Yun Qingci longed and cherished his thoughtfulness." This is a dark novel full of s*um ab*se, so not for the faint of heart. It's a great guilty please read. The extra chapters give such great insight to the MC and ML's relationship.

I appreciate the hard work and time in translating this novel! <<less

3/4 for the story, 4/5 for the entertainment. It's a very cute and hilarious romance, but I'm dropping this for now because I just don't feel like it's the type of story I want to consume at this moment.

Nevertheless, I'd definitely come back to this in the future. For those looking for a very "sha bai tian" light read, this is perfect for you.

Finally, a break from the usual bad romance trope where MC is the unhappy, emotionally/physically tortured protagonist in a bad political/convenience marriage (the latest Korean romance-orientated web novel hype) where MC regains clarity (a severe wake-up call through death or a plainly painful lesson that pushed them over the edge) and harbors vengeance upon receiving too much ab*se, tries to distance themselves from scum, but s*um doesn't allow it, yet the protagonist still retains a strong doormat personality and let ML take the lead on most matters.

Might've exaggerated, but overall... more>> cliche is still the same, HOWEVER!

The difference here is that MC is at least a capable person who's unafraid of hurting back, and capriciously vicious. He followed through on his determination not to get hurt again, if only most of these protagonist had half of that resolve this type of genre would be less hateful and cringe.

I suppose I still prefer both being scums than the MC falling back into his old routine of blindly loving and suffocating under the circumstances and trying to suffocate back with his unruly way of loving.

You can find peace in MC's cruel ways, the hurt inflicted was never one-sided. A story of two idiots hurting and loving each other over-dramatically.

ML is the kind of idiot who got too complacent with MC's devotion and submission and finally got a dose of his own medicine. He had led MC on and kept him at a distance with fake intimate pretenses instead of drawing a line when MC had become too paranoid later on in their relationship.

MC is a psycho guard dog around ML, whoever got too close gets bitten to death, only coming to realize he had been acting like a clown after reincarnation.

Spoiler

ML knows MC's best and worst sides. To say that he fits the empress role is a far fetch. ML is a great emperor but sacrifices a lot of himself and others for the country. He's that annoying guy who will NOT communicate with you, not explain things to you, and merely expects you to be patient with no end in sight. Only towards the very end did ML feel like opening up that clam-like mouth of his to MC.

MC, who's an extremist, is completely unfit to be what is asked of him. He'll act like a bull when it sees red, absolute tunnel vision. He hates with a bias and loves with a bias. Pettiness and vengefulness cloud his judgment long-term and the impulsive toxic actions, like self-harm, gaslighting, victim shaming, and snarky sarcasm, only create dislike and distance.

Pretty much the ultimate petty queen.

ML's extreme sides overwhelmingly top MCs' after his death and after some plot advancement machinations, MC gets to witness the physical and emotional prices ML paid for losing him, which FINALLY calmed MC down.

Nevertheless not praiseworthy on both sides to threaten each other with self-harm to make the other pay attention or make them stay.

And it's only after seeing enough bloodshed from ML that MC became complacent enough to forgive him.

MC becomes more annoying over time with his hypocrisy though, reprimanding ML for self-harm but doesn't self-reflect on himself. He still used that trick to gain ML's attention, by grabbing a knife to scare him. How MC was able to laugh that off in his own mind was plain scary.

He did verbally admit to that fault but when he attempted to scare ML, it was after the reincarnation and after he found out the truth of their first lives, so it still doesn't make it any better.

ML too, remains stuck in his old ways by NOT communicating and often withholding information and lastly struggles to keep up the transparency with MC.

The backlash of the spell to return them back to the past on ML works out well as a reminder for ML to keep loving him, but the question remains if it will ever be the chains that bind him to MC or be just an obstacle in the future if their love fades.

There were plenty of irregularities in the story such as the empress dowager and ML: ML was aware of her evil nature but never bothered to warn MC properly nor explain it to him. It was said that he's filial to his birth mother but given the risks, his lover is exposed to near such a dangerous person at all times, which should warrant him to loosen that mouth of his a little.

In the later years into their marriage in their first lives, MC had become a very dislikeable person. Those traits weren't new either, as MC had often displayed his fits towards his siblings and father.

The new level of excessiveness stems from of course the outer force, the empress dowager, and his newly gained power as the lord empress.

In the novel, they kept repeating how MC was never such a person, but it's simply because nobody gave him the reason to.

His father could very well be a perfect trigger to worsen his character if he didn't love his son. Minister Yun always gave in to his son and his siblings are always careful around him due to his relapsing childhood injuries.

[collapse]

I don't really see these types of stories as romantic and only dramatic, as it starts off and ends with always a delusional level of tranquility, they merely fixed the surface level of what's broken, toxic traits in their relationship yet remain. I can see their yearning for each other, which is sweet but it seems all so temporary and fragile, like a second honeymoon phase.

But I do greatly appreciate the pace of the story and no crappy stalling or any procrastinating.

Great translations! Great read! Nothing ground breaking or heart wrenching but surely entertaining. <<less

I think the story is well-written, and the characters have realistic motivations and reactions. However, that does not mean I particularly like it. MC is incredibly paranoid and mistrusting, but that is to be expected. He believes that after years of diligent love and affection ML killed him and his family off, it is expected that he deeply resents ML and that his affections are some ploy. However, the audience knows that ML genuinely cares for MC now, so MC just seems like a fool playing 4D chess when in... more>> reality everyone is playing Go Fish. Moreover, we know ML loves MC, but we never understand where his love came from, besides their childhood. What made him keep loving MC despite his frankly ridiculous behavior (again, this is in character and makes sense character-wise, so the behavior in of itself if not an issue) ? While we assume this will be revealed, during the portion of the story is it not explained, it makes ML seem unreasonable for treating MC the way he did in their past lives, and that ML continues to love MC despite MC's insane behavior.

The side characters are not anything to write home about, but I did enjoy the political intrigue and all these factions vying for power. It is not complex though, but it does its job.

TLDR; the characters act in reasonable ways (narrative-wise), but it does not make them any less annoying and frustrating. The rest of the story, side-characters, politics, are entertaining but average. It is not something everyone will like, but if we want to see shou bully ML, it could be incredibly satisfying since I think ML has wronged MC. Unfortunately, I will be dropping. <<less

for the readers who critique this book really harshly, it makes me feel kind of sad.... because as a reincarnation story with second chance romance, it really has some of the most human characters you'll ever meet. it's like the author took the core of our most human qualities and amplified them to a point where we were desperate to look away because it was some of the most raw & ugliest sides to ourselves to an extreme.

this story's not light, it's not easy to consume at all, and the... more>> mistakes these characters make will haunt them forever. it's gorey, it's full of grief & regret, very bitter resentment, insane amount of miscommunication, and so much twisted manipulation..... and in the center of it all, are two boys who just wanted to stick by each other's side.

these historical stories with intense court politics have always been so fascinating to me but this one really just felt like a double edged sword because of that one little detail

the flashbacks to their childhoods and the seedlings that were planted to have them torture each other as they do in the main story really pained me a lot.... and it pained me even more to see the sweetness they gave each other without fully understanding what would then happen.

it was a really hard story to read... it felt so cruel, yet there was never a moment I could really bash one main character over another without seeing this story through to the end. sometimes, it's really rough to just see how much love can make someone mutilate themselves both mentally and physically. at times, I found myself obsessed with how far they would go to keep the other by their side. other moments.....i just felt really sad for them.

from a very sensible and logical perspective, li ying & yun qingci are too toxic for each other. but thinking about it deep from the heart, their reconciliation with each other-no matter how cruel and rough it was-was the most honest and humane thing the author could've ever written.

i loved it a lot. it's probably not the most ideal to some readers but these characters do grow, and they do learn a lot from their past. that was what struck me even harder.

the last quarter of this story really just.... got to me a lot:')

fun little side note to alleviate the emotional damage of writing this review!! the moment I started this book, I couldn't help but feel some semblance of familiarity with it bc it made me think of "married thrice to salted fish" mainly with the resemblance between yun qingci & lin qingyu; it felt so eerie at times.... they're not completely alike, but it really startled me sometimes, so just an interesting tidbit. <<less

Second reread after some time, and I was still hooked—stayed up all night reading.

MC is an all-in, an eye for an eye type of guy that unfortunately fell in love with an emperor, who has understandably large responsibilities but is not particularly OP—not super smart/full of wisdom, not all ready to be an emperor. ML’s country governing burden is thrust upon his young shoulders and amidst the sole bright light of MC’s affection, he is forced to take on political scheming, crappy family members, and potential war, etc.

Both leads are... more>> flawed—MC is stubborn and single-minded, ML is way in his head and doesn’t communicate well, which creates their repeated conflict and a lot of pain.

With wife-chasing crematorium novels, there needs to be 1) pain & suffering from MC, 2) pain & suffering from ML, 3) chasing MC, 4) forgiveness & reconciliation. So, although MC is quite vicious in his ‘revenge’, pushing to the point where I feel like it could already be at stage 4, I still like where it eventually happened. Because from an omniscient reader viewpoint we can clearly see ML’s state, but to MC it’s not communicated. It is completely within MC’s character and with all that he went through to react the way he did. Maybe because I’m quite Scorpio-like, lol, so I can totally connect with MC’s mindset.

Had me crying at multiple points—sad, anxious for their reunion (like please get together already, don’t miss each other in this life!!), and happy at the end. It’s a really good crematorium novel. Would reread again next time. <<less

Those novel warnings are there ⚠️ for a reason ⚠️ Source: I almost stopped reading this novel multiple times because of the heavy themes. But the story is well made and everything exists in it for a reason, I also like how the two didn't immediately make up with each other to how they were before. I really loved it and I hope YQC and LY live a happy and full live afterwards 😭 What they went through was INTENSE

I like rebirth themed stories, its always satisfying how they face slap enemies, or correct their wrongs or do better for themselves. I have read the story until chap. 26 only but I really don't like how the story is progressing (so I read spoiler).

The story for me is very heart wrenching, I know the ML was wrong but I don't believe that its a wrong that cannot be forgiven especially since ML was working hard to do good. I also don't Like that both ML and MC broke each... more>> other and until the end there was no true happiness.

Its a good read actually, just don't wanna torture my heart. <<less

Agree with @a mere canno... The MC is so annoying. I dont know why I still read this story and make my heart burn.

The MC is selfish, he thinks about himself, if he suffer he want other to suffer more than him. He dont want to listen, he only thinks that he is the only one who suffer.

A couple of times I got angry with the MC bad mouth, he is cruel, really cruel indeed. He can make others vomit a thousand bucket of blood.

MC is a flat-out brat. And the way the author keeps justifying and excusing his behavior makes me think the author is a brat too -__-; every time the MC kicks the ML, I just want to kick him back.

Yes the ML made mistakes, but MC is so petty and vindictive I honestly wish the ML would end up with someone else.

Both characters are good they are in a relationship things get complicated by outside sources. Ultimately they have to make a choice of separation to end the hurt, or choosing to work through it because separation would for them be worse. The relationship is/was toxic as any relationship without good communication would be. ML had reason for what he did which were valid MC was also valid in having his feelings about it all. Once things came to light MC did understand where ML was coming from and ML recognized... more>> that his actions had been selfish regardless of if they were necessary or not but by that point too much harm had been done for things to be fixed that easily. They weren’t necessarily toxic but the relationship became toxic due to poor communication.

jusr my opinion though, and idk if I conveyed it effectively or not! <<less

It's pretty good for me, I think, I mean, I was here for the dog-blood and wife chasing crematorium arc so I didn't really mind the toxicity of their relationship, if anything, it added more spice to the grovelling.

You can't really blame the ML for the failure of their relationship, I mean he doesn't know how to communicate but the MC had his fair shares on their tragic ending from their previous lives, and there were a lot of scheming b!tches around them. Personally, I don't think their positions in... more>> the story suited them. ML can't balance between being a husband and an emperor while MC doesn't have what it takes to be an empress. Really makes me think that their lives wouldn't have been so tragic if they were in the modern world or if they were just, you know, ordinary people.

Some people say that MC was such a brat and he was very obsessive but I think that's partly because of his mom's way of raising him. I mean, we did learn that his mom left his father because his father, who was drunk, accidentally slept with another woman. Like yeah, he's toxic but its understandable, not acceptable, because he was taught to be prideful. It also didn't help that his mom showed him her anger towards his father when his father failed to protect him from an arrow causing him to be even more sickly. Like girly! He's a general! It's his job to protect the emperor! And he didn't even know that the assassin was aiming at your son, he's not omnipotent and he wasn't in the position to choose his FAMILY over his DUTY! I think this part was what shaped the MC to be someone who had to be prioritized over anyone's duty. Like he understood that the ML was the emperor, but he couldn't accept not being prioritized and made a lot of trouble.

The ML doesn't really suit the MC. First of all, he's the emperor. He's not in the position where he could prioritize LOVE over the EMPIRE. And the MC cannot really handle being an empress. Second, He spoils the MC a lot! He lets the MC do whatever he wants so the MC became an even more spoiled brat. Third, he can't communicate. The MC is an overthinker. What happens when an overthinking, obsessive man enters a relationship with a man who can't communicate? He OVERTHINKS A LOOOOT!!! He could've explained some of his plans to the MC, but no he didn't leading to misunderstandings after misunderstandings until it lead to tragedy.

So yeah, I kinda wished they didn't really end up with each other. Like I wished they separated and died in this life then gets reborn in another life where the setting is in modern times cause their position and the ancient setting is bound not to give them a happy ever after with the way they think and how their personalities are like. <<less

I literally didn't understand why I was having a hard time finishing this when it was only 60 some chapters. I still don't but I can say that this could have been a lot less chapters and saved me a headache. I really enjoyed the beginning but he drag had me not rooting for anyone. And I literally came to hate MC and not like the ML. But since the beginning, if I had to choose I pitied the ML more. I wished if only be found a better person... more>> then he could be a better emperor and heal properly. Given MC and ML past stories, they are really not good for each other so I really couldn't wrap my head around why they end up together. The MC could have made a better side villain, and I would've pitied him more.

At first I thought, Wow! These characters are really one of a kind. It's a little refreshing to see change from one of the ton. But then, I went, I DON'T LIKE THESE ONE OF A KIND.

All this is such a huge Imbalance. I get it, it's the 'relationship' that is the main center of this story but this story revolves around like how the other characters are nothing when it comes to MC and ML's suffering. Bruh, your servants are suffering because of your lovers quarrel seriously! It is shown and mentioned but nothing was done about it. At this point, forget worldbuilding, historical accuracy or side characters. There's nothing to talk about that! It's all a mess. The two main leads are unaware of their positions, ESPECIALLY MC, he acts like the world revolves around him. I just can't with him. That's why I'm more inclined towards ML. Both are useless but if I have to chose then it's a hundred percent ML. People around them should also stop indulging their behaviour. You know, despite their positions there should still be advisors to talk them out of it or give a eye-opening advise but everyone cowers in front of the emperor and mentions how they are lowly positions and dare not go against the two. Seriously? That's the only time when the story is aware of the ML and MC's positions but then disregards theirs responsibilities later and only focuses on revenge, suffering and whining and pettiness. So unrealistic! Don't get me wrong, I read only for escapism but still... make it make sense, you know.

At some point ML was like, I don't want to be an emperor. I was over the moon when I read that. Great! Please do so! But then again I want that empress dowager to suffer so...

People are like character development! But really? Is there any of that? The MC is still such a brat! What he need is an enlightenment! ML is such a fool! Unfit for his role. This is so toxic! I don't understand why toxic relationships like this are written only to end with them together. So unsatisfactory.

So many reviews made many good points on how MC is a hypocrite and ML is something something and I agree.

I'm sorry but these two can never be my main characters in a story. ML could be a main character in a wife chasing part but I don't want him chasing a wife who is YQC. And I want a story where someone could teach MC a lesson not someone who goes along with all his bullshit. Grow up!

I don't know what about this story makes me so angry, I tried to pinpoint it by writing a review but this is all I can manage. <<less

Read so far n I think understand that both leads are not perfect but it's just that kinda story they r imperfectly perfect n I respect that at first I hated the ML actually I hated him for pretty much more than half the story n I related to the MC a lot I give blindly n when I don't care then nothing about them can move my heart but I'm also not made of stone eventually n I can relent too so while not excusing the MCs cruelty against... more>> the ML I could understand why he took such actions n as for the ML I came to sympathize with him n I also understand where he was coming from.

The story could have easily turned to them separating n I wouldn't have minded that but I think it's nice that we were able to see some nice angst I'm very satisfied although I haven't finished yet but I'm sure I'll like it

Spoiler not so much it's just my imagination of how things should have happened

Spoiler

Before reading chapter 51 I thought it would be better if MC took the letter of separation n not so accidentally ;) destroyed it burn or tear, n then claim oh no it got ruined n the tells LY to take his time writing another one later, something along those lines. OR he could also keep destroying the letters in bizarre freak accidents until LY gets it that this guy is just being tsundere ╮ (^▽^) ╭ wouldn't that be a fun conclusion after all that angst

I was rooting for MC to keep hurting ML, to not forgive ML that easily and to punish him more. But I got hooked with ML's infatuated and remorse. I didnt want to see them hurting each other no more.

The author is brilliant in writing such sympathetic ML and cruel MC. That it made me to give my cheer to ML instead. MC was loving ML very strongly that he couldnt see beyond his love. He couldnt even see and understand ML. What MC sees is his love. That's the... more>> reason they failed once.

It the fault of strong clingy love. It can only contain one's love. It needs understanding and equal respect from both. Thus when they manage to be equal and respecting each other, they can be at peace to love. <<less

The story is good and MLs groveling is long and satisfactory but MC is really a crazy guy. In his previous life he was a terrible person who mu*dered and hurt people wantonly, was extremely jealous and manipulative and overall a psychopath. He really dint make it easy for ML. I am not trying to say that ML was right but he wasn't the only one wrong. I couldn't have also trusted someone like MC. They both are terrible people and I feel pity for people around them
