The Reader and Protagonist Definitely Have to Be in True Love

Description

An internet troll who wanted attention, the reader criticized his favorite web novel, saying: “The protagonist is dumb and the author is s*upid.”

Author: “…Got it.”

Unfortunately for him, the author actually listened to his (troll) feedback. The formerly lighthearted tale of a cute harem master suddenly became super dark and edgy. The reader could only helplessly look on as the protagonist was ab*sed and betrayed, finally embarking on the road to becoming completely evil. Everything was a mess!

After that the reader transmigrated into a strange world. How come the person in front of him looks like the protagonist (evil undead version)? Just what is going on?!

Note: Du Zhe (读者 meaning Reader) and Du Ze (杜泽 the character’s name) sound almost the same

this book f*cking SUCKS. and I dont say this only because of the (as discussed in other reviews) frankly horrible s*x scenes and the one Very bad non consensual dragon scene. like yeah that's part of it but if I only talked abt that you might be fooled into thinking this is a good book with bad smut WHICH IT'S NOT.

the pacing in this book is somehow boring and at times too fast. I'm sure that if you sit down and read a couple of chapters per day spacing it... more>> out you won't feel as much of this, but if you do that then you run the risk of getting lost in the many many locations that get very little explanation. half the times I only had a vague tenuous idea of where the characters where and who was hanging out with the MCs (and sure you know what? maybe if I was reading carefully and with a lot of concentration I wouldn't have this problem but if you want me to take out the notes and write in the metaphorical margins for this book you are insane). side characters that appear at the beginning do stick around but they're all mostly boring or have little to no character development aside from one quirky trait (like the f*cking. lesbian in*est demons. what the f*ck was up with that). if you only care about the romance, then yeah this isn't a big issue! if you care about literally anything else then oh man.

also the romance is. its something for sure. I'm not gonna sit here and tell you it's the worst and most toxic horrible thing ever and clutch my pealrs and faint and throw up or something bc it really isn't, it's just... To me it fails on the two levels I find romance interesting: it's not a romance in which I go "aw, I wish I had that" or anything, but it's also not a dark complex relationship that I want to watch because it's so bad. Yeah there's some cute-ish moments, and the ML's possesiveness is definitely toxic and at times dark, but I'd rate it about the same as some random quotev yandere anime boy x reader on those terms. the ML's constantly changing species / shape SHOULD be interesting but instead whenever there was a new form I was like :/ oh boy time to see how they have some s*x moment in this one and then advance the convoluted plot.

as far as the characters go, I do actually like Du Ze. listen, this novel DOES have good things! the doujin being the only item that Du Ze brought and the fact it's indestructible? it's funny (it's sometimes used so often that it feels tiring, but overall it's a funny gag). it has a premise about as good as any transmigration story has, and I really like transmigration stories. Du Ze, for as grating as his slightly repetitive 'haha im a transmigrator so ik what will happen' might be at times, is actually enjoyable, and I did care for him. I think it's awesome that he's a disabled MC and that his disability is treated somewhat realistically (as far as. transmigration danmei novels go), he uses hearing aids, and he DOESN'T GET MAGICALLY CURED which is. Good! Awesome! I did like Du Ze and his feelings, I did think his love for the ML was cute at times! I liked (... most) of his inner monologues and how he interacted with other characters! Too bad he's part of a story that is just not enjoyable to read if you're trying to get more from this book than 'omg hot yandere yaoiz XD'

this book truly, realy does have interesting concepts. a lot of its arcs and settings are genuinely interesting. the blackened ML is an interesting and engaging idea. the side characters, as concepts, seem to be characters you'd want to know more about. It's just too bad that the plot seems to both zoom by and leave you confused as to what is happening and at the same time feel like it's dragging on so slow you're halfway tempted to just skip ahead to the next weirdo s*x scene so at least SOMETHING understandable and easy to read is happening. the side characters just sort of blur into one big confusing mass and the second you go for a few hours not reading this you've probably forgotten most of their names or what they even did.

i'd say 'if you know the possible triggering content (like. yknow. the r*pe scene?) and just want some danmei transmigration fun read this book', but i'd be lying. because its NOT easy fun unless you really want to just plug your eyes and ignore all the worldbuilding and plot and only focus on the central relationship, in which case it's probably easier to go read a fanfic! you're going to WANT to make sense of this book because it has promising elements and then you're just going to have a stressful time trying to keep track of what's going on!! this review isn't me being some Puritan Warrior holding up a cross and going "AH! PROBLEMATIC CONTENT! BAD! CANCEL! 0/10!". it's me telling you I sat down and read all 96 chapters in the span of a few days and came out of it a more confused and probably worse person. I'm not even gonna say "go read X book instead", I'm not here to promote what I like, genuinely please read ANYTHING other than this and I promise you'll probably have a better time <<less

I'm glad I didn't drop this. I almost stop reading this because I thought that it was not my cup of tea after reading the first 3 chapters.

The MC is a black-fan type of reader that transmigrated to the novel he was reading with only his knowledge of the plot and the 0-point restoration skill as his cheats. The ML is a good-turned-bad protagonist in the MC's favorite novel. In the whole novel, my favorite phrase would be "A silly, cute reader..." and my favorite character would be the phoenix... more>> bird.

I've read some bad reviews about this novel but I still tried and enjoyed reading this so maybe it's a matter of perspective and preference. I would recommend that you read the novel first because you never know, this may be worthwhile.

Some clarifications:

  • The r*pe scene
Spoiler

It happened once when the ML was forced to take aphrodisiac but after he regained his reason and realized that the MC was afraid of him, he promised that the event would not happen again and that he (ML) would never hurt him (MC). He stayed true to his promise, he only used his dragon form when needed and he never did something without the MC's consent. To be clear, I don't codone r*pe, I'm just explaining what happened in the novel.

[collapse]

  • The R18 scenes - you can choose not to read it if you feel uncomfortable since the translator linked these R18 scenes to a different site.

Chapter read up to: 12

Personal rating: 1/5

Main thoughts: Save yourself some time and don't read this. I feel like I was tricked by all the high ratings. Reads like bad fanfic; maybe only read if you want some tropey entertainment and smut?

  • It had an interesting premise - MC is a 'black fan' who transmigrates into a novel and encounters the protagonist at the 'blackened stage'. However, this story was executed poorly
  • This reads like bad fanfic - paragraphs dart around with no linear progression, not much character exploration or world-building. MC transmigrates but has half-assed motivation to 'save' the protagonist and has zero personality
  • ML is a terrible person who literally tortures the MC for 3 years straight using MC as an experimental rat for his necromancy. This would be interesting, if the author delved deep into their thoughts and elaborated more. However, this is all glossed over. MC seems incredibly blank and thoughtless... how could he sit around for 3 years of ab*se with no plans to escape?

Everyone has their own view and taste. Although ML is a little yandere, he still respects the MC's decisions. At the same time the plot is funny and very emotional. Whenever I read the plot's climax, I cry cause it so f*cking hurt to see them suffering. In my opinion although this story is a little dark, it understandable. If you don'tl like a possessive and yandere ML then this novel is not your thing. I love this novel very much and this will be my favorite bl novel ever.... more>> So if you don't like it, then don't read it, there is no need to pay a low rating. <<less

Ewww... really tried to like it, because the storyline showed some refreshing potential and I have a soft heart for ab*sed characters. But the lazy D&D-ripoff and the shallowness of MC and ML were not sufferable to the end, so I quit around chapter 70. On top of this I just couldn't stand anymore reading two to three times per page how cute and silly the protagonist is.... not. Sorry, but the few nice ideas just weren't enough for me to click with this crap.

I feel like I just read a fanfiction featuring a mu*derous psychopath and the sack of meat he obsessively wants to own for reasons unknown... Can this even be called a love story when there was no build up and one of the partners is treated like a possession? It's like they just got together because the story's labeled as romance. I'm pretty sure Xiu only liked Du Ze because ... more>>

he practically never disobeyed or back talked and followed him around like a mechanical doll. Not to mention the fact Xiu was already broken and hopeless making it obvious he would have clung onto anyone who was willing.

That's not too romantic in my books.

The only thing I can really give it credit for is the fact the author actually makes it so that the smut scenes (for the most part) aren't some horrible gore fest for the bottom and the top actually seems to care about his partner enjoying himself a bit. Emphasis on a bit. That's high praise considering the year this came out and how hard it was (and sorta still is) for Chinese authors to find info on that kinda stuff. So, props in that department I guess.

Other than that, there's really not much of note here... Du Ze doesn't do much other than exist, Xiu isn't really all that different from his in canon book counterpart despite Du Ze's insistence that he is
Spoiler

In both world's he's ruthless, many plot points the protagonist tried no to trigger happen anyways, he's still a s*x fiend with the difference being he's monogamous rather than poly, and he still destroys the world in the end. How is he different from his book counterpart?

. If you're looking for a light read then I guess this is fine, but I wouldn't go into this book expecting much other than a time waster. <<less

I Love this story. One of the most satisfying & complete read I've had for a while.

The story overall captivates me with its adventure, world built, protagonist and story progression. Really dynamic and a full fledged journey both event wise and characters' growth. Gave me some good laugh and picked my interest with the trials, challenges and riddles....

It has a balanced amount of: humor, adventure, fantasy, cruel reality/society tendency (xenofobia, etc) suspense, romance and characters' growth.

Spoiler

I also appreciate that the MC is not OP. He seems to be invincible but actually he's fragile and the author don't try to give him some cheat armor powers to cheat on his flaws... Instead the author keep the message he's just a normal boy that can be strong using his own strength

instead of the oh so common novel convenient cliche logic " if you're a loser, inept and didn't spend your youth wisely you deserve to be given a cheat power... ". The fantasy of sloths....

The fact that the events were not rotating around the MC, but on the ML yet the MC role is not overlooked was good.. since he's not being put aside... he contributes and take part of the journey/events and meet various characters, grow and didn't suffer from the cliche of getting everything (power, women,...). The "you don't need to be at pinnacle of the food chain or experience catchy the love of more than three characters to experience a healthy and eventful love" was nice.

[collapse]

Charcaters were really good. I like the MC and his character concept.

Spoiler

I also liked that he has some physical issues and trauma (ofc not rejoicing that he suffered) that doesn't not steam from the usual cause being: circumstances (plotting, scapegoething, jealous stepsibling lazy setup...) but physical appearance. I completely approve story that helps readers be more sensible of people with disabilities and such. Usually protagonist in novels are subjected to bullied MC for being poor so it was rare for once that the MC has a sort of physical issues.

The story helps a lot portraying and guiding people to see how people with disabilities aren't s*upid they can sense when something is odd or when people are faking their kindness or friendship. They aren't idiots.

[collapse]

The ML is intriguing if you ask me~ the side characters didn't feel generic and easily forgettable either.

Spoiler

several races in one... Truly a miracle. Haha

[collapse]

.... the adventure and the journey is what made it more engaging than the usual cheap romance of light novels known for its basic world building and generic event pattern. It's real nice of the author to bring the readers to experience and empathize what people with issues feels. I cried. <<less

Xiu is awesome and his abilities are really well written. The plot has got to be the best part of this entire story, its super interesting! The romance is acutally kinda adorable!

This was a lot more violent and gruesome than I expected. Honestly, actually imagining the things the MC and ML went through (not to mention the brutal punishments ML dealt out to others) made me shiver. Overall, I enjoyed the story. I think it’s completely realistic how the ML fell for MC (hard not to when someone literally will give their soul to heal you). As for MC, I think how he fell in love was also realistic.

i really loved the fact that he came to the realization that he was judging the ML based on the story he read, rather than actually getting to know the ML. I think that realization made the fact that he did fall in love even more believable.

Its not a perfect story, but it was interesting, I believed the reason for the ML being crazy possessive was explained, and I thought the eventual romance also made sense. I’ll read it again. <<less

This one grew on me. Honestly in the beginning I was trudging through this story a bit but once we started to ch 30 or so, the plot managed to hook me in along with the curious status of MC and why spirit beasts were scared of him. I binged this in literally 24 hours. (My eyes ache...)

I truly do love both the MC and the Novel for giving us a deaf MC and sticking with it, and it's refreshing to see the MC transmigrated as himself instead of... more>> into a character from the novel, and also remain weak (power wise) from beginning to the end. Rather than your typical "transmigration into novel, bend protag, fix flaws and win life", it's more like if the MC went into the novel but didn't set out to truly change anything. Instead, he's just there for the protag at his darkest time and then became a one of the party members. Rather than watching MC overcome challenges, it's more like watching the MC watch the ML go through his trials and reach his "happy end".

Was this great? Honestly, it's just a shrug from me. It had a lot of original elements, a really interesting antagonist and ending, the writing also was quite decent overall. That said, it's quite slow at times and the angel trial took so long I basically skimmed that to the end. There is a lot of hand waving, all problems are futile in front of ML's handy race-changing powers. Give it a shot, but be warned that it might not be everyone's cup of tea. <<less

I created an account just so I can review this story. The story is amazing. The author did a great job and the translation team also did a phenomenal job. I really wish more people know about this.

As for the story, I don't really need to say much since a lot of the other reviews have summed up everything I have to say. The story is well paced. The characters are well developed. I love the way they handled the typical Chinese novel cliches, its GOLD!

I am a fan of m-m, yaoi and bl novel but this book just not click for me.

there are many little things that made me annoyed.

MC language are a f*cking turn-off. Whenever I was about to be pulled in this magical world, I got a pull out by'The Moe lord', 'Some silly cute person' like Every Damn Paragraph. It's fine at first but repetitive using got me frustrating and it was annoying as hell. I tried to replace these silly pronoun by 'He', 'Du Ze' or even 'Xiu', the reading was way smoother.

The plot was rushed. The protagonist upgraded his power by awakening his bloodline. No training, No cultivating. Not buying it.

The plot armor was ridiculous.

The romance was badly written. MC was straight man who fell for the protagonist (man). I normally love this GFY trope if it is well written; it's my jam. But MC feeling toward protag remained in brotherhood zone until the protag confess to MC then Boom!, I'm gay for you baby. Not buying it. When the fuk did you develop your feeling? When you want to turn a straight man gay, it takes a lot more than just being ab*sed (Lich experiment), guilty (for the fate of protag) and the look of the turner.

MC personality is a kill-joy. He's that kind of guy who is cluelessly s*upid, not recognize a love flag despite it being waved in front of his face. His mindset was also annoying too, It was full of irrelevant garbage I didn't care about and not one bit important to the story and the emotional development of the character.

The repetitive using of silly phrase and pronoun. As mention above, a couple of times, it was funny. A hundred of times, it got real silly. STOP IT.

THE r*pe SCENE. Me and r*pe DO NOT MIX. The one in this story has less damage because at least MC and protag have had s*x before but it is still considered r*pe still. Just reading it make me wanted to drop it right away. MC got double f*cked by two dick, no lube, no stretching, his hole was even bleeding. BIG NOPE. At least protag had taken the consequence seriously otherwise I would drop this.

The s*x scene was mediocre too. Maybe it's because of the author skill, but I got no vibe of love coming from the two. One was physically aroused, while the other only want to possess and conquer.

This.

is.

... more>> precious.

★Let me tell you my exp. The first time I read this, I was like:

["hmm.. This story is kinda normal?

why is the place only rotate between the two of them?

this seems not that promising, seeing the both of them are the silence type -_-.. How can they deepen the feeling without much communications?

The f*ck, Shou/uke is disability? Well, that can be romantic somehow.."]

then I put this novel on hold. Saving it when all my curren fav novels finished.

★The second time I read it again, I had forgotten most parts of the story so I began read from the beginning again.

i found out that things were relating to each other. Every part of plot, of the story, had its own meaning and function for the future part/plot. The story was built neatly, and the world wasnt only rotating around them.

They didnt just invite anyone they met as a comarade. They could pick the right ones bcs of uke's guidance.

The relationship between The main CP was mainly, unexpectedly deepened by the ever betrayed and most wary of human, seme. And how that can happen was really sweet and logical.

.

The most fav things I love in this novel is definitely the romance between cp. It's HE, of course but you dont know how difficult and how much sufferings must be sacrificed. And those are gonna make you squeeze your tears empty.

.

The things gonna reach its climax from 10 ch or so before ending. At the time, you really need to find an empty space, with no one around you. Dont let them distrub you. Dont read in class. You need to be focus. Pour all of your feelings into the story. Feel it. Be mad. Be sad. (Okay I strt to stray from the path of reviewer -_-")

The conclution is, this novel is amazing. <<less

Oh my heart! At first, it was that cliche, OP halo, fast upgrade type of protagonist but it definitely works, because the main plot isn't really about that. The main focus is the reader and the protagonist's relationship. At the beginning, Xiu didn't trust him, for 3 years Du Ze let him practice necromancy on him. It was about trust.

I can't fully explain how much I love this story. The social barrier of the reader and the protagonists' mistrust and insecurity, both are being healed by each other.

Ahh~ I love... more>> this story so much. They believe each other and trust each other and love each other. The story comes around in one full circle and I was at awe. I couldn't stop reading especially on chapters where my heart was in a sea of tears. They truly definitely have to be in true love. Time and distance is irrelevant.

I COULD RANT FOREVER WITH HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS NOVEL!

Stories are real, they live in our memories forever. <<less

Both the five star reviews and the one star reviews are accurate. The characters can be bland, and the plot odd, and yes, the MC was forced into having s*x. But is that really so odd for many yaoi novels? I don't think so. I practically expected it to happen from the first chapter.

The tags should be accurate now. Just read those and keep them in mind when reading and you will be fine.

Re-reader here! After rereading this for the 5th time (once a yr lol) , I'm ready to write a review for this novel.

I absolutely adore this novel. I can not stop expressing how much I love the plot, the romance, and the main characters. The way the author wrote this novel was just so creative. There's part that got me all hyped up, parts that makes me ball my eyes out, and parts where I feel so much love and understanding. This novel was few of the first BL novel... more>> I ever read, and thanks to them, I came to love the world of BL manhwa and novel. I still can't believe the translated version is already 7yrs old, and the OG was published longer. I know for sure I will be back to reading this novel again. This novel not only was among my favorites, but also filled a significant part in my heart.

As other readers, the romance between MC and ML was truly amazing and to me, really wholesome. The trust and unconditional love they have for each other just makes me feel incredibly happy.

As for the negative reviews that I read, there's not much that I can say as everyone have their own opinion. However, for this novel, I would say the translator made it super clear that this novel contains A LOT of Chinese slangs and memes to which might have thrown a lot of readers off. As an American born Chinese and raised to speak both English and Chinese, the author's writing style made the novel better and much more humerous. Probably because I know the meaning behind them and also had incorporated them in my own life on a daily basis. So for new readers please don't be afraid to give it a shot. If you end up not liking it, move on to your next adventure! That's totally okay. For those who enjoy it just like me, I am glad you had a good time reading it! <<less

This was my first fantasy novel, and while it took me some time to wrap my head around it, the world that it revealed was amazing. The different lands, races, gods, etc. Painted a very pretty picture.

The MC, described as silly and cute, was actually aloof and impassive and remained so throughout the novel. Truly a Duzhe (reader/ observer) from beginning to end. His presence initially carried a lot of weight in the novel, but once he exhausted his spoiler knowledge, he became more and more transparent only gaining a... more>> solid form when the ML looks at him. At a point, you can't even justify him being the main character because all he does is act as an earthwire to keep the ML grounded.

Oh the ML, I have a hate/love relationship with this character. He's a dark grey character, and while his actions can't be described as cruel, it's very clear that he's always on the brink of insanity. I guess I'll avoid books with "yandere" tag in the future.

The romance (barely existent, mostly just an extremely h**ny ML) doesn't leave much to be desired. They hardly ever talked to each other. There was a scene that was so perfect for them to actually talk to each other, but they just told a story that was used to 'intensify' the ML's possessiveness and did pppp and that was all. The romance is sort of like if an A-list celebrity was in a relationship with a super crazed fan.

I think what a lot of people liked about this was the smut, even though most of the times it just felt like torture.
Spoiler

Istg I still don't understand why people are excited about being penetrated by 2 dicks. It just seems like a torture technique from hell, and I felt so bad for Du Ze. Another really weird thing was the s*x with the gnome transformation which was constantly being described as having the appearance of a 12 year old child.

[collapse]

In terms of the story, I give this a 3.5/5. <<less
