Shen Miao, the Di daughter of a military family, was pure, quiet, gentle, and gracious. Because of her foolish love for Prince Ding, she forced her way into becoming his wife.

After six years of assisting her husband, she finally became the mother of the world: The Empress.

She had stayed with him during the fight for dominion over the empire and during the efforts to expand its territory. She even went so far as to put herself in danger and be taken hostage by a neighboring empire. In spite of this, when she returned to the Imperial Palace five years later, she no longer had a place in the Imperial Harem.

That beautiful woman he kept in his embrace gave her a bright, stunning smile and told her, “Older Sister, the country has settled down. It is time for you to step back as well.”

Her daughter died tragically and her son the Crown Prince was deposed. No one in her Shen family, who had been completely loyal to the Emperor, were spared. With arrival of a new reign, everything was overturned!

Shen Miao never thought that all of the perils they encountered as husband and wife, all of the assistance they gave each other mutually, were nothing but a joke in his eyes!

He told her, “Because you have been with this Emperor for more than two decades, this Emperor will allow you to keep an intact corpse. You should be grateful for this kindness.”

Beneath a meter of white silk, Shen Miao established a malicious oath: Once the day of reckoning arrives, every single one of you will die!

Once reborn, she returns to the year when she was only fourteen years old, a time when tragedy has not yet befallen, when her family still lived, and when she was still the pure, quiet, gentle, and gracious Di daughter of a military family.

Close relatives conceal evil intentions, her cousins are vicious and merciless, the new concubine is like tiger watching its prey and that s*um wants the previous life’s events to be repeated?

Her family must be protected, the great enmity must be avenged, and the prize must include the empire’s imperial throne. In this lifetime, let us see who comes out on top!

But that Xie Family’s young marquis, that tyrannical and arrogant spear-wielding young man on horseback, stays stubbornly on her side and proudly declares, “It is merely toppling the Imperial Family. Do not forget, the world belongs to you, and you—you belong to me!”

The Thirteen Capitals of You Zhou: This belongs to you.

The Ding Yuan City in the North Desert: This belongs to you.

The Southern River of Yu Zhou, the Eastern Sea of Ding Xi, the Green Lakes of Lin’an, the Ancient City of Luo Yang: All of these belong to you.

“Xie Jing Xing, if all of this belongs to me, then can you tell me what you want?”

“Alright, I want you.”

This novel is a gem. No wonder it is so popular and high-rated. Definitely worth rereading!!!

I love this novel a lot. First of all I love the MC. I love how she is not forgiving and only harms the ones that made a move to her. I love how she only relied on herself (not talking about the end) I loved how she was cold-blooded. Overall I really love her character. ML is to me contrary to some reviews here isn’t bad at all rather a really good ML for... more>> an ancient China novel. I mean no one can expect him to fall in love with her at first sight and be warm and close to her all the time otherwise it would have been worse. Wasn’t it better to see how a person who had everything but his loved ones could find the thing he wanted all his life in her? Yes I know that we were kinda sick of how heavenly defying beauty he was with all those paragraphs long descriptions but still he satisfied me. I want to say that this novel is not perfect at all. There are plotholes, no answer mysteries, unnecessarily dramatic events etc but I still I love it. I love how the author was capable of writing a novel this complex with all those schemes and characters and events. Some things that MC and ML have done doesn’t make sense for example or some extras aren’t that good these are all the negatives but even though I say for example that some things were a bit too dramatic I still cried hard at those scenes and to me the way that I could felt those emotions of the characters and could even shed tears was enough. The plot is awesome characters are so interesting the events and all those scheming are so exciting. Some say that they got bored towards the end but personally I didn’t really feel that way. Yes towards the end some characters that I think could have been a bit more intelligent were a bit disappointing but still I wasn’t bored at all. Overall I am very pleased to read this awesome novel seriously recommended <<less

This is a good read. I like how both the romance between the main female and male lead blossoms gradually as the story goes. Especially the interaction between the two, oh-so-cute! Though I really wish the side story is incorporated into the main and give it more fluff rather that a 2 part thing.

I had to drop it! The FL is a badass and I loved it. The ML was a little crazy, but up to the point that I read it was his charm. Unfortunately, I couldn't keep going, because...

Spoiler

People from FL's family tries to trap her to be r*ped by a Prince. The FL solves that matter putting her "cousin" in her place. Even though I believe one's needs to bear The consequences of one's actions, I can't copy with it.

So it seems to be a good read, but I'd rather read Greetings, Ninth Uncle. <<less

Definitely one of my favourite stories of all time. In fact, it's the only novel that I'm able to read over and over again without getting bored, I've read it about 6 times by now? The words and plot are beautifully written, and everything just feels right.

And can I just say, XJX is my ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE ML in all novels, be it modern or ancient. He's cunning and can be vicious, but he's respectful towards the FL and just lets her do her own thing, although he is always there... more>> to support her. He has actual emotions (and a very strong background story) and it shows, unlike those domineering princes or CEOs in other stories. And did I mention he has funny moments too? Y'all this is how a ML should be like! Not those violent and forceful MLs that seem to suffer from face paralysis! I need a XJX in my life please T.T

The FL Shen Miao is absolutely brilliant too, she's smart and not weak at all, but she's not exactly OP either. One thing I like about this author is that she tries to ensure that the story makes SENSE. Our FL was a queen in her past life, and went through many hardships, and from these hardships she grew and learnt skills such as archery. A simple background plot, but it explains why the FL is so talented and I like that. Plus she has a real clear motive for revenge, and not just to face slap (even though I LOVE THAT she's so so cool).

I like how the romance in the story builds up. FL was hurt in the past, so definitely she wouldn't fall in love so easily. Same goes for ML, he's someone who is ambitious, is it possible for him to just fall in love with someone suddenly? They have early sweet interactions, but the real romance starts in the later chapters. The story involves quite a lot of schemes that makes a lot of sense as well, which is also one reason why I love this story so much. The author respects the readers' intelligence and doesn't just brush off the plot.

The translation is really good too. Of course there are a few words which could have been translated differently to make the story more poignant, but overall it was well done. The author is good at writing impactful and beautiful phrases, that while still as nice as in the English translation, it'll be so much more impactful actually reading it in chinese, so if you can read Chinese you should check out the og novel! But even if you can't, not to worry, the Translators did a wonderful job that will not make the story any less enjoyable.

Overall this was a very very enjoyable read, and the story was just right, not too long not too short. I have yet to find a story that can top this yet honestly, and I love EVERY single interaction the ML and FL have, especially in the later chapters. Definitely there are a few flaws and some loose ends

Spoiler

I wish Shen Miao was there to witness fu xiu yi and Mei furen's demise honestly + I also really wanted to find out more about the others in Ming Qi (such as Marquis Xie, Su Ming Feng, Rong Xiu, etc) after XJX conquered Ming Qi. The ending felt rushed.

[collapse]

but I really do think this story was very well written. From the start to the end I was so into the story. Despite reading so many novels, I would say this still remains as my top favourite, especially with how it ties in the idea of how both of them are fated to be. And indeed, in thousands of possibilities, Shen Miao and XJX will only chose each other. <<less

Everything I wanted to say are already told by other reviews, so I'll just repeat it : This novel deserve the high rating. There are flaws/loopholes in the story, there are endless drama, there are weird and rushed developments, and there are lots of unneeded narrative like any other chinese webnovels; But despite all of that it is very well written. The story flows flawlessly and it is really easy to imagine all of that inside my head. The author is a genius at this. Translator also did a very... more>> good job at retaining the tone of their conversations, though it is a shame that there are a lot (I mean it, a LOT) of typos.

Overall I'm very satisfied with this one and if I have to point out my only dissatisfaction, that would be the very scarce afterstory/sidestories. I'd love to follow their journey more. 5/5. <<less

Reading all the review brought me here even tho it was actually quite been awhile after I finished reading this novel.

Well, both haters and lovers are right when describing pros and cons of this novel. I don't know everyone will agree with me or not, this novel should be tag as romance with sub tag revenge, not otherwise.

While lovers love interaction and relationship development of MC/ML, and I agree to some extent. The haters hate how the spotlight was robbed from MC, I mean this novel suppose to be revenge... more>> story? I also agree to some extent, not entirely.

The pros I saw in this novel actually quite a lot. First, I am a sucker for plot line development and this novel nailed it

Spoiler

until MC met the bit*h who stole her past life's husband, the prince, I will explain in cons.

[collapse]

I agree with lot review saying their interactions are natural. And a few hate how MC became degraded girl after met ML, I think that few don't really see MC/ML interactions closely that they judge hastily.

Spoiler

Just see MC's circumstances, in her past life she blindly loved the prince, one-sided love. She always give, never receive. Her poor judgment of people makes her always to be a victim of scheme. In short, she cannot tell other's intention at all. The only thing that covers this downside is her future knowledge, that's it. Moreover, ML is described as frivolous and at the same time also pushy and straightforward. In past life, people around her always covers their intention while interacting and that's why she tries so hard to uncover ML's intentions even tho his only intention at first just that damn "she's an interesting and devious girl" plot.

Even tho it's cliché, their romance progress with the right pace. They both have their goals, their first impression for each other is that "I need to be cautious of this man/girl" and it is so justified remembering that their goal is far from being a saint. While MC tries to avoid ML to prevent unnecessary disturbance, ML tries to get close to her not just bc she is interesting but also to ensure that MC will not be a negative variable for his plans. The turning point of his impression is when she gambles with her life to do her scheme (she burned her hand), he found out that she is struggling to live (I am so sad in this part) among her poisonous so called family. I think this is when the haters start coming and say ML steal her spotlight. Well, I can understand haters, this is when the genre start tilting to romance than revenge. But from ML pov, this is what he would do. He pitied her and he wanted to help her. But at the same time, he still has his own goal as priority (that choking scene in the secret room) and that makes him conflicted. Her tears makes him feel guilty so he let her go, I don't really agree ML already love MC at this point, he just pitied her, that's all. Ugh, describing the plot will be wayyy too long so I will stop here. The point is, the plot and characters' trait complement each other that I will say again the plot line development is nailed.

Second, even tho many disagree ML's trait as mainstream and unlike able, this story really need ML with those traits. MC is confirmed having PTSD even tho is not well described, which makes her as passive girl who couldn't make a new relationship either love or friend. She does everything alone that it will make the story awkward if she suddenly develops friendly trait while interact with new people. Well yeah, I admit ML kinda like a creep by not letting her has her privacy. But, bc he is so pushy and frivolous, MC could get out from her comfort zone and has better character development.

Third, didn't have unnecessary misunderstanding. I really hate those bs fillers that only makes chapter longer.

Forth, allies around her also got time screen to develop their character while her enemy describes as complete tr*sh is a little bit shameful. I was hoping at least they have reasonable excuse for what they did, which didn't, they just are described as third rate villains with bird brain.

And for cons, I feel ashamed telling that the biggest cons is MC herself. In her past life she is described has one-sided blind love to the prince and also is an empress with dignity and wisdom after her harsh life in palace and other country, until the end she loved the prince dearly. This is so contradicting that I feel frustrated. I mean, IF she were blind to love she loved the prince till her end, it doesn't make sense that she woke up with those hatreds point out to the prince. I mean, she loved him so bad that her wisdom couldn't even make her has a slight doubt of the prince's act. When she woke up, actually she should be broken first, fault herself and not to the prince, she wants to hate the prince badly but she loves him blindly, what can she do? That is the most logic one.

It doesn't make sense that she is said as wisdom but cannot see through people close to her. IF ONLY, in her last years from past life, she has doubts about the prince, it means she start to see things what she couldn't see before but it's already too late that she died, if it were the case, it will be justified she woke up with those hatred.

While the other characters are well made, MC herself has too many holes. Her past life is one, the other holes was MC couldn't stay true to her original trait. The story is well made until that bit*h who stole the prince showed up, she no longer has wisdom and clear judgement, she became a PTSD patient with broken self confident. I'm not telling it was bad, only placed in the wrong order. Her anxiety is actually better placed before she married ML, before she opened her heart, while she still had the lingering remorse. By accepting ML is like a point where she starts to realise how to embrace herself, to love herself. And by showing her anxiety when bit*h appeared in the latter, it's not just show how she still doesn't develop to be better person also that she's still doubting ML's love.

Ah, those third rate villains. I won't say much. Their appearance was made only to fill the hole that MC is back for revenge, that's it. It's so sad that it was decided MC will revenge her enemy thus her enemy was made, it will be much more better if her enemy wrongdoings was well made first then affecting MC's character growth and not MC's character affecting how her enemy will be wrongdoing her.

How her return is explained, I'm not really fond of it but I will not complain since other novel with the same bg has it worse.

Wrong target revenge. While she hate the prince and do scheme to drag the prince down, the one who actually made her anxious and miserable is the bit*h who stole the prince. Look how clouded her judgement for the bit*h compared to her judgment for the prince. I don't even remember anymore who is the worst scheming against her.

[collapse]

Seeing how much cons, giving 4 stars seem too generous. But I really appreciate the development (before the b*tch) and how natural their relationship progress as time pass. <<less

okay, I really love this novel.

The plot, the flow, the character's smartness, the face-slapping. Now, I'm in difficult situation, I can't move on. It seems I can't find another novel that has good story and character like this novel.

I've been finished in days ago, and currently searching another novel but always got turn off because I always compared it with this novel.

I will give this novel a 90/100. A 100/100 for the first 100 chapters and a 80/100 for the second half. It is worth-it read and much better quality novel than 99% percent of tr*shy female MC 'wuxia' type novels.

The first 100 chaps showcases the female MC's cunning, ruthlessness, and proper usage of memories from her past life after reincarnating. There are a lot of intricate schemes against the MC and how she fights herself out of them which are incredibly interesting to read. There are also great descriptions about... more>> ancient Chinese noble families and their relationships within the family as well as with others nobles and the imperial family.

The first 100 chapters is also when the male love interest does not play a big role and the female MC is mainly doing things on her own. This makes it incredibly interesting as well as refreshing.

However, once the male love interest starts interfering, it kind of goes downhill. The male love interest is super rich, super smart, super powerful, super strong, and super loyal to the female MC. Basically he is the perfect husband all wrapped into one, it's kind of silly. And afterwards, any and all threats and schemes against the female MC are all solved effortlessly by the male love interest's awesome plot armor and all around amazingness.

Perhaps the author realized the futility of this turnabout and basically the novels ends really fast in the third act and major plot lines and major enemies are simply 'taken care of' and the story wraps up very quickly.

Overall, I think the novel is purely worth the read for everyone simply because of the strength of the first 100 chapters. I merely wrote this to vent my frustrations about the second half and to warn others. <<less

TL;DR - The novel felt pretty standard to me, but everything was done extremely well. Simply put, if you have enjoyed similar novels, this is one of the best ones!

Thanks to everyone who worked on this novel!

Pros:

    • FL and ML - As other reviewers have mentioned, a great part of the novel was the realistic leads. The FL lead fought viciously through both of her lives, but she wasn't invincible and had her flaws. The ML was reasonable and imperfect (especially in his relationships with others), and his relationship with the FL took time to develop. As a warning though -
      Spoiler

      The author seems to REALLY

like the ML. Be warned for some barf-inducing paragraphs about eyebrows.

      [collapse]
    • Side Characters - I actually enjoyed how the novel had some smart characters and some s*upid characters. The FL didn't use past events as much as she used her understanding of other people from her past life to plot and scheme. My favorites include
      Spoiler

Princess Rong Xin, Su Ming Feng, and Pei Lang

      [collapse]

but honestly, even the bodyguards had actual characters. This was definitely the most outstanding part of the novel for me.
Cons:

    • Plot - First, the entire ending sequence felt a bit rushed and had some plot inconsistencies, but it wasn't awful. Furthermore, it was involving the events in the world and the FL's revenge, not the romance parts. The big issue I had was with the
      Spoiler

      coma sequence towards the end

      [collapse]

and that was more because it was unnecessary to their development at that point. Also, some plot points felt very similar, with some examples being -

      Spoiler

      1. Someone within her tried to drug the FL into sleeping with another man in two situations

      2. Someone tried kidnapping the FL within the capital with her friends in two different situations

      [collapse]

but, as a reader on this website, you should be used to that already :D

Definitely deserves 5 stars! I'd recommend reading this one, especially if you're interested in angst-filled stories.

I love how the translator and editor barf whenever the author repeatedly exaggerates the ML's handsomeness. It's one of the brighter things of this story tbh. I'll stop reading for now because this story is quite long and from all the angst I've read, I plan to read some fluff stories to balance it out. Historical stories involving the imperial family is always very complicated and full of schemes. I may continue reading this story... more>> once I'm in the mood for some angry reading. <<less

I think it's a great read. I started reading this without much expectations and I didn't expect that I'll enjoy this that much. I don't mind the slow paced romance (because that wasn't the reason I read this one) though their interactions were kinda anticipated by me.

Others don't like how MC seemed to be relying on our ML in the later parts however I don't really mind because MC has the mindset of using everything that can be used to its maximum. Thus, letting the ML do the work is... more>> like borrowing someone else's knife. It saves time and effort and much convenient than having 'accidents' that may lead to implicating her family. ML is very much willing to be 'exploited' so why should the MC decline him? And I kinda get the author wanting MC to experience real love and overcoming her past traumas.

If I were to put some issues I found rather troubling within the novel, it would be as follows:

Spoiler
  • I Idon't know if I missed a part in the novel but the thing that the male lead (XJX) and his friend, Gao Yang, found in the secret chambers of Prince Yu wasn't explained in the story. Even the "things" that the male lead is trying to search for everywhere isn't explained. Why was he even looking for it at the Shen residence? How much it helped them in unifying the 3 countries? I mean, sure for the interaction it is good. But idk, it shouldn't have been there if it'll be disregarded later on.
  • The people who kidnapped the MC after she went to that secret chamber, who are they? Who are they working for? It seems like the male lead knows them. Why didn't they come back? They were, again, disregarded in the story. It's like the kidnap incident is just beneficial for the main characters to have interaction and for Princess Rong Xin to appear.
  • Then the ending, I find it too rushed. After Great Liang won in overtaking the Qin Country and Ming Qi, what was the reaction of Xie Ding? Surely he discovered that Prince Rui is Xie Jing Xing. What about Princess Rong Xin? It was said that XJX sent people to protect her and the Su family but Princess Rong Xin is still from the Fu Family. What? Did she just suck it up? Accepted that there's no more Imperial Family in Ming Qi because there will be no Ming Qi anymore? And because it was XJX who did it that's why it's okay? I don't get much of it. Because she already gave me the impression that she'll be loyal to her country as part of the imperial family during the time when she wrote a letter for Emperor Wen Hui about Prince Rui's identity. It was all like "okay let's disregard the small things and just have the finale we wanted, a happy ending. Yay."
    [collapse]
As for the characters, every antagonist seemed to be driven by jealousy, envy, and greed. And most of them tend to act without much thought.
Spoiler

Even the 'intelligent' Shen Dong Ling overestimated her capabilities once she was married over. From the start she's aware that she shouldn't go to the MC's bad side but suddenly she became s*upid in the latter part. Seemingly to make the story end with just the first household of Shen family alive.

[collapse]

But overall, I liked the story. How she was trying to overcome the loss of her two children that will never be born again since she changed her fate. How she just used the schemes against her to get her enemies on the traps they made for her. It was fun. Would recommend it. <<less

Before I go on with my thought, can someone tell me if this worth it after chapter 200ish?

I am EXHAUSTED trying to push through somehow, but everyone (or mostly) have been saying that it is good and they all complete the novel. Well TBH I enjoy the plot up until now but somehow everything is very lengthy.

My thought :

FL 3/5

ML 3/5

Plot 3/5 up until chap 200

Romance in the novel 2/5 up until chap 200

Translation 5/5

Before I review the work I want to give a big applause to the translator. I can't believe I read this novel for free. I have recently started reading Chinese novels so at first I was really confused with the with the names and positions but ZAZA made the whole experience so smooth...I think I have too much expectations from novel translations now on.

Now to the story... where do I begin... halfway through the story I realized that I didn't want the novel to end. These characters and their world... more>> have become mine now... The main character is really well done she is not malicious just for the sake of being malicious. She is balanced, she learns from her mistakes and never forgets her grudges.

The plot is also well developed as everything comes full circle at the end and that is very satisfying. The male lead is PERFECT. Cold at first but gradually warms up... so the romance is really slow burn... which makes it very realistic.

Spoiler
  • Is the story perfect NO
  • After a certain point the schemes (their return to xiao chun city) become a little boring as their is not much at stake.
  • I wanted to see more insecurity in Shen Miao...
  • Male lead is perfect and because we don't really get his viewpoint we don't understand a lot of his character.
  • The ending was meh we could have gotten a happy ending or a death honestly I wouldn't mind but comma was just cheap trick.

I have such complex feelings after reading this series... phew. An absolute page turner? A bit. I finished it in basically one sitting across 2-3 days. However, is it flawless? No. Definitely not. But is it Mango approved?

This is Mango approved.

Straight off the bat, let me be clear: I don't particularly like female centric ancient China setting novels. It feel that they often turn bland with a repetition of one-dimensional characters, while the main plot labours forward while some suspiciously abusive romance kicks off. This series has surprised me with... more>> its freshness. How exactly is this fresh?

Most of these series have a heavy focus on revenge and excess drama, or an excessive focus on comedy/fluff. But here, we actually have a romance drama with revenge being the path initially. However, romance soon takes over and there are actually multiple couples. I won't be giving any spoilers. Just know that romance is organic to the most part.

The female lead sure packs a punch, because her background is quite clear. Her temperament is consistent but at the same time, through the story, there is an amazing progression depicting how towards the end, she is able to mature truly. As for the male lead, at the start, we see that he is the typical cold eye handsome body type fellow but amazingly, we actually understand clearly why he is so. Of course, we later understand the real reason behind his character but it is still very logical.

Going to the antagonists... There is a good mix of multi-dimensional characters but to be honest, they are not the best written characters. Often times, by focusing on how she knows them from the past, we are not really introduced to any character aspect of them. However, this series is not really about the antagonists. Rather, it is about the loveable support characters. There is a good bunch of them, and they all get excellent screen time.

The "action" is really more focused towards scheming and such, and the drama can sometimes get boring due to the continuous descriptions of how beautiful everyone is. But if you stay smart and keep reading at a good pace, you get hooked into the actually complex plot which goes supernatural to a certain extent. There were moments where I actually teared up, so beware. The angst is real.

To anyone who cannot withstand mature concepts like r*pe, torture etc., this is not for you. Even though the leads aren't victimized, enough characters go through it that someone sensitive might get triggered.

Overall, this is a wonderfully delicious package which managed to create freshness out of a rather stale concept, and credit to the author for managing to do that with quirky character interactions which don't fall into the whole "little bun" cliche. Is this a masterpiece? Certainly not. It is an imperfect story but it is definitely worth a Mango approval.

PS: I got fooled by the name of the series. The female MC has no martial skills. Don't expect her to be an action heroine. <<less

I was enjoying it, seriously...

If you are able to look away from some plotholes it is a good female protagonist novel

The Cause of 3 Star:

The girl doesn't have any physical improvement anywhere in the story. The following description is a conceptual spoiler, not anything major;

Spoiler

She is able to pull and release an arrow from a bow that is supposed to take very strong physical power to do so. This not only happened once but twice. Later that arrow that was released directly hits an apple that is being held by the mouth of a person. And guess what, the arrow sticks the apple like that. The person that was holding the apple on mouth passes out seeing this instead of losing teeth or being swayed by the force of the arrow.

[collapse]

After this, I lost all of my interest. By the way, I was binge reading it until c128 because it was good. It would have been way better if the thing I mentioned in the spoiler was skipped altogether.

Anyway this a personal reason for dropping. Have a safe journey to others... <<less

Oooh the last few chapters really made me cry...

Such a beautiful story with a scheming, ruthless and smart female lead... so refreshing. The schemes are quite good as well.

One thing to note. it says "Mature" in the Tags maybe for some violence but it is suitable for teenagers. (No graphic sex).
