The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage

Shen Miao, the Di daughter of a military family, was pure, quiet, gentle, and gracious. Because of her foolish love for Prince Ding, she forced her way into becoming his wife.

After six years of assisting her husband, she finally became the mother of the world: The Empress.

She had stayed with him during the fight for dominion over the empire and during the efforts to expand its territory. She even went so far as to put herself in danger and be taken hostage by a neighboring empire. In spite of this, when she returned to the Imperial Palace five years later, she no longer had a place in the Imperial Harem.

That beautiful woman he kept in his embrace gave her a bright, stunning smile and told her, “Older Sister, the country has settled down. It is time for you to step back as well.”

Her daughter died tragically and her son the Crown Prince was deposed. No one in her Shen family, who had been completely loyal to the Emperor, were spared. With arrival of a new reign, everything was overturned!

Shen Miao never thought that all of the perils they encountered as husband and wife, all of the assistance they gave each other mutually, were nothing but a joke in his eyes!

He told her, “Because you have been with this Emperor for more than two decades, this Emperor will allow you to keep an intact corpse. You should be grateful for this kindness.”

Beneath a meter of white silk, Shen Miao established a malicious oath: Once the day of reckoning arrives, every single one of you will die!

Once reborn, she returns to the year when she was only fourteen years old, a time when tragedy has not yet befallen, when her family still lived, and when she was still the pure, quiet, gentle, and gracious Di daughter of a military family.

Close relatives conceal evil intentions, her cousins are vicious and merciless, the new concubine is like tiger watching its prey and that s*um wants the previous life’s events to be repeated?

Her family must be protected, the great enmity must be avenged, and the prize must include the empire’s imperial throne. In this lifetime, let us see who comes out on top!

But that Xie Family’s young marquis, that tyrannical and arrogant spear-wielding young man on horseback, stays stubbornly on her side and proudly declares, “It is merely toppling the Imperial Family. Do not forget, the world belongs to you, and you—you belong to me!”

The Thirteen Capitals of You Zhou: This belongs to you.

The Ding Yuan City in the North Desert: This belongs to you.

The Southern River of Yu Zhou, the Eastern Sea of Ding Xi, the Green Lakes of Lin’an, the Ancient City of Luo Yang: All of these belong to you.

“Xie Jing Xing, if all of this belongs to me, then can you tell me what you want?”

“Alright, I want you.”

Will rate in the near future when more chapters are released!

If you can't get enough of revenge stories with second chance, then this should be added into your arsenal. We have yet to see how she will scheme and the ML has not shown his appearance yet but this is giving me some Wei Yang vibes. Going through life and death for the one she loved only to find that she was the fool and she was just a disposable pawn. So far it is similar to most others in... more>> the similar genre but I find that this is written quite well. I look forward to see how this story will unfold and how deep the schemes would be!

The translator has worked hard and I definitely recommend this if you enjoyed Princess Wei Yang, Chongfei Manual, and Mei Gongqing. <<less

BEWARE of SPOILER

The rebirth theme never crosses my mind before. I was browsing the net and found this gem accidentally. And since then, I've started reading rebirth themes, so I can make comparisons, and let me tell you, this web novel is above all.

Spoiler

"The novel is the story of a girl called Shen Miao whose whole family has been serving their country as prominent military generals. Both her parents and her brother lead their own armies and have brought many wins to the country. Shen Miao, being foolishly in love with the youngest prince of the country, chases after him, marries him, and becomes empress of the nation only to destroy her family with her own hands, including her own children, the crown prince, and princess. She is disposed of by her husband, the emperor and his favorite concubine and Shen Miao reincarnate into the body of her own 14-year-old self, with all her memories intact from the past life.

She vows to take revenge on everyone who led to the demise of her family in her past life. Along the way, she ends up helping people who suffered the same fate as her own family. Son of another general of the same status as her family in the same kingdom, Xie Jing Xing, starts taking interest in her and becomes the male lead of the novel."

[collapse]

You have a strong FL who had her memory from the past intact and will do everything to not let history repeat itself. She was witty, intelligent, and goal-oriented. This was that book not needing any romance because the FL alone was the best. But, when the ML appeared and romance started to bloom, it was even better. This was the kind of story you'll be wishing is more than 300 chapters so that you can follow the journey of both FL and ML till their death.

But, the best thing about this story, it was fast-paced. Both FL and ML never hide anything from each other except a few things which were needed for the plot to carry on. But, there was no misunderstanding. Because the FL was not your typical simpering heroine. So yeah, go and read it. <<less

I've probably read this story at least ten times. I then introduced it to my book club, and we had a blast exploring all the layers of this story and investigating our feelings. It is undoubtedly one of my absolute favorites.

Let me say that this story does have trigger warnings, and I also personally feel that anyone under 18 is going to have a really hard time grasping the nuances.

My attraction to this story stems from the relatability. I relate to having numerous aspects of my past that I wish... more>> I could rectify. I related to her as a mother, as a victim who has wanted revenge, and as being a young naive child that grew into a strong intellectual woman. I witnessed and empathized with her sorrow and comprehended her need for revenge. As she pursued her revenge, I was there cheering for her, sharing laughter and tears. I occasionally questioned the morality of her and her associates; however, I consistently comprehended her perspective as she has ceased to be soft and kind, which I greatly appreciate. We see a woman who was forced to become tough because of her circumstances, and that is real life. She's been through too much and continues to go through a lot even in this rebirth, but slowly it begins to turn around, get better. Eventually, she finds her happiness.

Truly, this story and characters are everything. <<less

I honestly really wanted to like this but I couldn't! Like all of it was so over the top. The face slapping was too intense. The FL and ML were too op. The ML and FL were too gorgeous (especially ML).

I think the parts I liked the most were when she was would start crying with immense grief when she thought about her kids in the past life. They were heart-breaking but really well written

I dropped it after they got married but maybe it gets better and hence the positive reviews.

There's already so many reviews sprouting countless praise over how good this is, so I'll just stick to my dislikes. Honestly, it might not even be very large problem for most people, but for me it made me stop reading. I might come back, but who knows.

My main problem is in some ways with the ML and in other ways just general plot progression. My biggest one is probably what's happening with Pei Lang and Ji Yu Shu.

Spoiler

Pei Lang was out there risking his life as a valuable spy as one of MC's people (by valuable, I mean valuable). Eventually he gets caught and viciously tortured. Apparently, right before then, he was able to send out a message to the MC (I presume). However, one of ML's subordinates (Ji Yu Shu) deliberately intercepted that message and then was punished by ML for an unrelated matter (and therefore didn't see the message). So, this message about Pei Lang getting caught is just gathering dust while he's getting tortured for info, and this is bc ML's subordinate couldn't mind his own business. Okay, not a fan, but I can take it.

THEN, after several chapters (days) later, the subordinate comes back to find the message. He understand that this means Pei Lang was captured and was obviously being tortured for info. He realizes that no one else knows this (not MC, not ML, no one). and then he decides "hey, how about I DON'T TELL my boss this important info about a valuable spy getting caught and tortured" aka he deliberately hides it. I knew Ji Yu Shu was dumb, but not to this degree. At this point, I question why ML even has Ji Yu Shu as a subordinate if he's daring to hide valuable info like this. It's such a contrived train of logic that irritates me so much bc Pei Lang is out there staying loyal and getting tortured (and also being a possible information leak) and Ji Yu Shu consciously decides to ignore this? This is more of a flaw on author's part, IMO. it just doesn't make sense as a plot point.

And then another many, many chapters pass. A few mentions of MC wondering why Pei Lang isn't contacting her, and then mentioning it to ML. ML offhandedly goes to save Pei Lang, who is then sent to the doctor. All's well that ends well so far. Ji Yu Shu has had no punishment (so far) and the chapters are in general getting more and more tiring?

[collapse]

ML is also just perfect. too perfect. He's soo smart, smarter than practically everyone else. He's extremely handsome, handsomer than everyone else (and author needs lots of contrived, repetitive descriptions to highlight this). He's stronger than everyone else in martial arts. He's also frivolous, being able to toss away extremely expensive and difficult-to-get goods, etc, etc. His interactions with MC are pretty cute in some ways. And then you realize that if he were an actual irl person, he'd be one hell of an arrogant a**hole. Eh, I can deal with it.

What I can't is how he needs to be just that much better than MC. The narrative seems so biased towards him, honestly. His perfection is contrived. He spies on MC 24/7. MC gets flustered around him and only him, and it feels like some of her actions just get a lot less... sensible? it's like the ML is this book's Mary Sue, with the MC being just a bit worse than him in everything.

A four for the MC and the general scheming. Otherwise, the ML and some plot points would've brought this down majorly. <<less

A good second chance novel worth reading. I was able to immerse myself into it most of the times. But sometimes some things or situations did not go with the flow of the "realistic" vibe of the novel and decreased my enjoyment.
Spoiler

For example, being able to accurately shoot the princess' bow that is supposedly super difficult to pull. Yes, she did it a bunch of times in her previous life. But this life there's been no training with a bow. How'd her arm muscles get developed enough to do that? Even people who've had illnesses or accidents gotta get physical therapy to get their "normal" muscle functions back. Maybe those muscles were transported back in time with her soul?

Overall the hours spent reading this novel weren't wasted.

This is one of the best Ancient China and Rebirth stories I have read. Great world building, character development, and relationship development. Love the relationship development between the two main characters. Love how smart the MC is. My only regret on this one is how late the MC and ML get together on the story. It is a long read, but an absolute must read if you like historical or rebirth stories

(This should be a 3 star, but I can't change it)

This novel s**ked me in, but there are some things that hold it back.

The main character is one of the best I've seen in this type of story. While I definitely don't condone a lot of her decisions, you can she why she does what she does and the past and present traumas that informed her decisions. Honestly, Shen Miao dangles right on the precipice of being an anti-hero for me. She's definitely not the type to let... more>> the male lead handle everything... which leads me to the main problem of the story.

The male lead is awful. He's got a terrible personality, and he spends 75% of his time observing the main character from afar and 15% of his time acting rudely or violently towards her. The rest of his screen time is spent describing his eyebrows- and I'm only being mildly facetious here. I'm undecided if he's some sort of self-insert, or if Shen Miao's personality makes a stereotypical male lead look silly. Either way, he sticks out like a sore thumb in a cast of characters that is generally pretty well built. It's a shame, because it means I'm rooting against the main couple for most of the story. I would literally rather there be no male lead, but here we are.

Luckily, if you can ignore that, this novel has some of the best courtly scheming in the genre, so it's worthwhile. <<less

All in all, amazing story. The relationship is veeeery slow burn though, so don't expect a load of fluff and flirting right off the bat. Actually, the romance is pretty much a background thing throughout 2/3 of the novel. But it's really good. The MC is charismatic and very intelligent without being your typical perfect mary sue. The ML is the perfect balance between being a cold a**hole/caring lover. Loved their chemistry, didn't feel forced at all.

The plot is 80% politics, 20% romance. The characters are all interesting with their... more>> own backstories. BTW keep in mind that most of them are villains.

I have to admit, I had to force myself to push through the first few chapters. It was hard to understand what was happening and who was who. But please, if you struggle as well, persevere. It's worth it. And you'll naturally get used to all the characters, families, houses and world building.

Didn't read the extras.

I removed a star because:

  • Almost all of the villain's deaths were extremely underwhelming. They are vile human beings, have done horrible, disgusting things (well planned to, at least) they have absolutely no morals, but they get a quick, painless death. Or an off-screen death. I mean, I guess you could say they were so insignificant they weren't even worth a cool death scene but... It just left a bad taste in my mouth.
  • The ending was just... disappointing. Not tragic or anything like that, but I just felt extremely bored during the last few chapters. Not sure what went through the author's head there, when they could have simply just wrote a quick, heartfelt ending. A shame, but overall definitely worth reading. In my top 3.

This story I do believe it is the better novel in its genre, but I rated it 1 star because it is simply machine translated and I just found it unreadable by chapter 13. I found myself questioning multiple times what a sencentce meant or why a paragraph was contradicting itself, that and a lot of words (mostly peoples titles) that im pretty sure just got translated directy as their chinese sound.

If it ever gets a proper translation I will be giving it 5 stars, but until then I simply... more>> could not bring myself to read it as is. <<less

This novel starts well, and the events are fast-paced and kept me interested for the most part.

The MC is a Mary-Sue, but that what you sign up for, if you read the summary and decide to continue reading. The villains appear to be two-dimensional characters at time with shit-for-brains, but to be fair, or MC has a huge advantage going for her. She knows all their weaknesses and is absolutely ruthless in cutting down anyone who crosses her. (The gratuitous revenge plots make for great reading if you're going through... more>> a shitty break-up, lol)

The reason I'm putting this on hold and not giving this 4 stars is the ML. He's a cookie-cutter cold male lead with ulterior motives and (obviously) superior looks and snappy martial art skills. The MC's family is a potential threat to his lofty ambitions, and it would have been great to see their interactions where their feelings for each other spar with the greater interest of their families/revenge/fight for the throne. However, the chemistry kinda falls flat.

Also.

Spoiler

The ML supposedly dies in battle, but comes back as the prince of an enemy country. And it turns out that he switched places with the child of the Lin An Marquis when he was a baby. Um, what? As far as hidden identities as plot devices go, this one made no sense. It would have been great to see the ML use his oh-so-incredible talents in the fight for the throne and overcome the challenges that came with being at odds with his (not) father, the suspicions of the Emperor and the odious slime ball Prince Ding. But no. The already overpowered ML mysteriously gains the wealth, prestige and all the resources of being a prince, everything that Prince Ding possesses, without taking any pains. As far as character development goes, this one what a huge bummer. The MC begins to take a back seat as the ML uses his inexhaustible wealth and power to fight her battles for her.

A really good palace, court politics story, with a strong female MC. Despite knowing things that were going to happen ahead of time, there were still stumbling blocks, and she is not without flaws. The story was not just centred around her revenge but also her determination to protect her family and loved ones. I love her character build-up and even character growth. In her previous life, she chose to love the wrong person, and didn't know all the love and care her family had for her, and instead trusted... more>> the wrong people and was schemed against. In this life, she chose to protect the ones who are true to her, and correct all the mistakes she had made in her past life. The only unexpected in her new life is the male MC, but whether it was a good thing or a bad thing, she only knew much later.

ML was very interesting as a character as well. The story was well planned and well developed, slow and steady. The relationship was steadily built from ground up. They got to know each other as strangers to somewhat allies with suspicions before slowly growing closer, unlike the crazy love-at-first-sight nonsense. (Altho I do like a good love-at-first-sight novel once in awhile). The palace schemes were somewhat typical and expected for the Chinese palace context, but the same tricks were not overly used and thus it was never boring. The ending was pretty touching as well, and I cried quite a bit.

Overall, the story was to the point and wasn't unnecessarily draggy. Every scene, every thought and every dialogue had a purpose, and reading it constantly left me at the edge of my seat wanting to know more. Thusfar, one of the best historical-royalty novel I've read. <<less

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book!

So to be fair, I read The Princess Weiyoung novel first, so I couldn't help but compare parts of the story as they have similar plot points *cough cough plagiarism*. I gave a lot sh*t to Shen Miao at first because she was soooo slow on her revenge. The book was pretty descriptive that I got a bit annoyed. Like, I don't need to know the color of the walls. (I'm exaggerating but sometimes within the chapter, the same information is thrown twice at you,... more>> making it a bit repetitive and redundant).

But I did warm up to Shen Miao eventually, as she was a lot kinder and more human to me than Weiyoung. I'm very happy that Shen Miao never forgot about her past life and never forgot about her fallen children. Her pain and guilt towards everyone that she had let down in her past life was always carried deep in her heart and she made sure to protect everyone in this lifetime.

The slow romance was extremely slow. There were subtle moments in the early chapters, but were so small I felt like I was grasping at straws. But I'm glad I waited. Once the second arc happened though, the book went from great to freaking amazing. I got my dose of romance!

I love the ml's backstory and where the story went after learning about it.

Can we talk about Xie Jing Xing for a bit? I love that man to death. Freaking ADORE him. Definitely the highlight of most chapters. He is a black-belly done right. I can't recount how many times he made me pace back and for in my room because I got too excited because of him lol. I also like that he was insecure and sensitive with the fl. It makes him so human that he wasn't sure that she loved him. I hate characters that are sooo sure/full of themselves that they think they are loved by everyone -___-

Like no! You earn that shit!

The reincarnation part was so nice and beautifully written. I cried soo much during those chapters, not because I was sad but happy. You'll know what I mean when you read it it. Made me love Xie Jing Xing even more ❤️❤️❤️ if that was possible (It was).

I really really want to give spoilers to ppl, but this book it just so wonderful, that it shouldn't be spoiled. *Cough cough go read it*

Definitely one of my all time favorite book.

Shout out to the amazing translator chubbycheeks, please go support her by buying her coffee. Without her, I would have never read this amazing novel. Thank you 💜 <<less

Good story, but ML ruins it.

The moment I could tell what kind of person he would be, was the moment I decided to drop this. He is the typical rough, cold as*hole of a ML. Which can work, but he is already giving me bad vibes. Seeing other reviews about him makes me feel like those vibes are correct.

If you can look past this, then go for it. If you can not, then I wouldn't recommend this novel.

This novel is one of the best ones I've read on this site and honestly for me it deserves the rating it gets in here. Mind you that it is not a perfect novel and the rating I'll give it is a 4.7 just because of the crazy plot and amazing translator. If you want to delve into this novel please read the tags properly and other reviews to see if this fits your taste because this does get a bit heavy in terms of the schemes our MC use... more>> and other torture the other characters do. Another reminder is that if you're looking for fluffy romance this wouldn't be it as this novel's whole focus is schemes, revenge, and politics, but then again romance definitely happens in later chapters (later chapters meaning you'll go through more than half of the chapter and there's still little happening between MC and ML).

I'll start with the negatives first to warn people before starting the novel.

CONS:

  • Gets pretty heavy early on, so I wouldn't recommend this to those who doesn't want to read r*pe, torture, death, and betrayal.
  • The excessive praise of the author for ML's beauty. Makes you think that the author wants to end up with ML rather than pairing him up with MC.
  • Let's face it you'll know MC will be the winner every time. Not really a negative thing but still a con for some people who like drama and angst.
  • Slow romance which is again not a negative aspect of this novel because at the start of the novel MC is pretty young (14 yrs old) and ML is still suspicious of her and has his own problem to deal with. The romance builds extremely slow and it starts at the end of the first arc before the time skip (Probably more than half of the chapters? Idk I forgot). They have a really cute relationship in later chapters though and in my opinion it was definitely worth the wait.
PROS:

  • The plot is really interesting and well written that every arc will not bore you one bit.
  • Even though so many things are happening it doesn't get confusing to follow through the story because all the schemes are explained step by step without any mumbo jumbo skipping just because the author got lazy.
  • Can I say face slapping revenge cause that's what happens in here and it is completely satisfying.
  • Each characters are fleshed out well including the side characters and canon fodders. No one here is extremely s*upid and most antagonist are actually quite smart.
  • Rebirth plays a huge role in the story unlike some other novels where you'll forget that MC rebirthed because they don't act like it. MC acts like her previous age and it definitely shows.
  • MC isn't completely OP. Sure she has advantages because of the fact that she rebirthed but there are many situations in the later chapter where she'll realize many things has changed in the present because she also changed the past. MC is a smart and mature schemer but still it takes a lot of planning before her schemes bore fruit.
  • The ML has a personality of his own and doesn't exist just to dote on MC. ML has his own story with a lot problems in baggage that it makes it interesting to read about his own circumstances. ML isn't overly overbearing unlike those MLs I've read so far; he's completely respecting of MC and her decisions and supports her through it. Some people may not like him but as you keep diving deeper in the novel you'll really see that he isn't just a perfect character built so MC could shine because she snags the best guy.
  • A bonus for me is that ML doesn't fall in love with MC in first sight, but develops trust and respect for each other first like normal people before getting into an ambiguous relationship to a romantic one.

I liked the series until she becomes a complete beta in front of ML. Like where is your calm and viciousness gone that you became so scared and started crying and started telling him everything trusting him unconditionally even though the guy is legit plotting behind your back and clearly doesnt give a rats ass about you. That was disappointing, theres no point in having a female protagonist if shes just going to be scaredy cat and not on equal terms with the ML. And everytime ML is in the scene the author spends like 3 paragraphs describing his handsome appearance.

During their wedding

What a roller coaster ride!

The scheming is deep and ruthless and the relationship between ML and FL.

... more>> What makes this piece amazing is that Shen Miao have a path of her own. She co-exist with Xie Jing Xing but never at the expense of her individuality. ML is too dependable and powerful, it is endearing to see him latch on to the FL.

The twists are heart-wrenching and moving. Romance is gripping, but not too much and doesn't overshadow the whole series. I can't help but ask for more to be honest, but it is, what it is. Side characters are all fleshed-out, and then the villains are equally cunning. There are some funny scenes, gruesome scenes, even disturbing ones.
