Really underated piece of work, it's really interesting, I love the main character, the ML have a lot of flaws but his character keeps you interested and he treats the MC well, I can't really describe how this novel kept me hooked up even though I mtl it, Korean is really bad when mtl, surprisingly it was easy to understand, and it does have a manhwa ongoing

Just love the MC and his depth ♥️

One of my favourites for sure, it's a real hidden gem.

I think the lack of general interest in this novel is potentially because people are put off by the depravity of the ML - who has very specific sadistic tastes in the bedroom, which he himself describes can scare partners off and is pretty much demonstrated in the first chapter. The ML is also undoubtedly a Villain (TM) and not in the dark romance sense - unlike other violent MLs who are loan sharks or mafia members or bloodthirsty war... more>> 'heroes', the ML orchestrates political scandals, orders assassinations, and engages in torture of political opponents. However he is also genuinely restrained, respectful, and well-mannered. He's an incredibly interesting character.

If you can look past that, the novel is unexpectedly well-written, with a gripping plotline.

The story has a strong focus on politics, in the cut-throat constant see-sawing and struggle for power sense. It's a breath of fresh air to read this sort of political story, after so many other two-dimensional cookie-cutter 'royal family vs nobles; ML's faction good and people-serving, other faction bad and corrupt' settings out there.

The MC's psychological struggles are also a huge mystery that keeps you guessing until the end, and the back and forth of both the MC and ML's personal and political relationships creates the most amazing tension for the story.

I'm also a sucker for when authors make references to art pieces, cultural buildings, or historical events - it just brings the story to life, demonstrates that the author reads things other than webnovels, and makes me trust that they are passionate about the story they are telling, instead of chasing the latest writing trend. This novel does feature many cultural references, and I've even had moments where I went 'oh I know what this is referring to!' and therefore feeling a further connection to the story.

This novel has a DELICIOUS amount of angst, and

we get rewarded with fluff towards the end. The characters' happiness are definitely earned.

The translation is obviously MTL-ed, but the story is still readable. Besides occasional mix ups in pronouns, and the names of the two main political factions fluctuating within the story, everything else is fine and the reading experience is not significantly impacted.

I'd definitely recommend this. <<less
