The yandere saintess wants to refine me into a sword spirit; my master wants me to become a rebel disciple; the blindfolded sword immortal senior sister wants to make me her s*ave; the fox from Qingqiu harbors ill intentions; the little dragon girl keeps drooling at me; the princess wants to keep me in the deep palace; I suffered a huge loss when I was a child…

I clearly just want to cultivate immortality, so why do they all have designs on me!?

Years later, someone asked Lu Jin’an, “What kind of Dao Heart supported you until now?”

Lu Jin’an glanced at his charming and beautiful wives and sighed deeply, “I just wanted freedom, that’s all.”

I’m 44 chapters into There's Always a Fairy Scheming Against Me, and honestly? I’m having a blast. It’s a novel that doesn’t just entertain—it actually respects the reader’s intelligence, which is way rarer than it should be.

First off, the characters are a highlight. Yes, they’re a little over-the-top (in the best way), but they feel consistent and alive. They’re funny, relatable, and they act in ways that make sense based on who they are—not just to move the plot along or set up a joke. That kind of character consistency... more>> makes even the absurd moments feel earned and engaging.

One thing I appreciate a lot—and this might just be a personal preference—is that the humor doesn’t rely on dumb misunderstandings or people being idiots for the sake of the plot. The comedy and laughs come naturally out of the world and the people in it. It’s clever without being self-congratulatory, and I find myself chuckling not because a character tripped on a banana peel, but because of how well a moment plays out in context.

Also, this might sound niche, but I love that the sect elders and senior figures are actually competent. In so many Xianxia stories, they’re basically there to get dunked on by the protagonist or to create artificial tension by making s*upid decisions. Here? They actually act like people who’ve lived long, powerful lives and know how the world works. It’s such a small thing, but it does so much for immersion.

All of that, and the story is still setting up for something bigger. The hints about the era of great conflict give everything a sense of momentum without overwhelming the day-to-day storytelling. It’s just... fun to read. Smart, funny, well-constructed fun.

Strong 5/5 so far, and definitely one I’m going to keep up with. <<less
