They All Say I’ve Met a Ghost

Hello, everyone! My name is Shen Jianguo. I am a night school instructor teaching ideological development and Marxist philosophy, occasionally analyzing recent policies and measures for my students.

All my classes are held in the middle of the night; I’ve never seen my coworkers or students during the day. The training institute’s classrooms are all in abandoned schools, hospitals, or residences. The license plate number of the bus that picks me up is 444; it always arrives at my house at precisely midnight and disappears at five in the morning.

What? You’re saying I’ve met a ghost? Impossible! As a staunch scientific materialist, I absolutely don’t believe there’s any such thing as ghosts!

I’ve only had one problem recently: couldn’t the training institute hold its classes a little earlier? Wouldn’t around 8 PM do? I fear neither heaven nor hell, but I do fear going bald.

Hmm, how do I start? To be honest I didn't really expect this novel to interest me, I was thinking that maybe in the middle of the story, I might be bored and whatnot so I hesitated and took my time contemplating whether to read this or not. And I'm very glad I decided to read it. It's very exciting and thrilling and I was so happy reading this and was so sad to finish it. I will not say anything about the characters but I promise you future readers,... more>> They're worth it. I love them. I love 'they all say I've met a ghost' and I highly recommend it to danmei readers. Rating it 5 stars <<less

A quick read you can binge in a day that'll make you laugh. I adore this author's style of comedy where the self-assured main character acts as a straight man while he thinks the rest of the world has gone mad. Meanwhile you, the reader, just keep laughing at the misunderstandings he has.

This is at least two books in one. They are both good-just not as fleshed out as I would like them to be. The author does walk the line of what our MC knows is happening and whats actually reality in an entertaining and consistent way. The first book and main story is about MC who is a dedicated first time teacher firm in his beliefs and pragmatic about needing to work hard to live. Thus he takes the only job he can find: working for a strange fly by night school with the strangest bunch of students a teacher could ever encounter. He's dedicated to helping them discover their ethical principles while helping them down the path to recovering from the various "mental traumas" that have made this school their only option.

The second book is about a young exorcist traveling outside of his sect for the first time and encountering a very different world, materially and spiritually, than he had been brought up to expect. He's arrogant in his knowledge and routinely flabbergasted by out MC's ability to survive in the second book while still following the plot of the first book.

Spoiler

Their friendship and eventual romance is sweet. The way they open each other's eyes to possibilities outside the boundaries of their own experience is great.

[collapse]

I do wish the world building, secondary characters, and the arcs dedicated to each student had been more developed.
Spoiler

I really wanted a story for all 26 students. Not just a primary six or seven.

[collapse]
The arcs are more developed than in a lot of other novels I've found on this site. But they are also more compelling so I wanted to spend more time enjoying them.

Spoiler

I do see alot of people who are irritated with how long our main character takes to figure things out. Part of that I think comes from how soon the author invites us into seeing both books vs if they'd let us live in book one with the MC for a while. Admittedly, his responses to the students are not what you'd expect. But that is consistent with the character. He does not do the expected. His outlook on life gives him the ability to believe with hard work the people he wants to help (like his students) can have a better life. That belief does not change. Not even when his understanding of the spiritual world does eventually expand. And thats why he can do what he does for his students and friends.

I do feel a little weird that in hindsight most of what he was doing was unintentionally terrorizing all of the students. At least most of the guys. The girls stories showed they improved because someone they didn't think could be sincere was sincere to them. Says weird things about gender dynamics and the way violence against woman and men is perceived.
[collapse]

I do recommend this if you don't need a character who rationalizes in a way you approve to enjoy a fun, quirky horror comedy romance.

First of all, the premise is unique among the other BL novels here. That alone is worth 3 stars.

Secondly, both MC and ML have really good personalities! And the interactions between them are sweet and funny.

Lastly, what a healthy story! There are horror and tragic elements written into it but the story itself still somehow gives you hope for the future. It's the same feeling you get when the first rays of sunlight breaks through the rain clouds after a whole night of rain.

5/5 will recommend.

THIS IS A MUST READ!!!

It's not too long of a read, so I won't do an in-depth review. Just that, the MC and ML are completely totally loveable, and the cast is memorable. As well, the humour HILARIOUS and spot-on.

Despite Teacher Shen's personality being exactly the opposite as what I look for in protagonists, oblivious and innocent, he has managed to secure a solid spot in my heart. Never have I ever so deeply resonated with the ML lol, going from somewhat looking down at the MC, to admiring him, and eventually, to falling in love with him. There's really no other reason for this but the fact that he's just such such SUCH a good person. His blatant care and dedication for his students made me want to... more>> cry multiple times while reading. There's a quote that the ML says that I think really fits with the MC:

"I've never seen another person like you. Every moment you overturn everything I've ever known. Every action you take makes me honor you."

A review below mentions Teacher Shen's similarity to Koro-sensei from assassination classroom, and I wholeheartedly agree.

I usually avoid short stories because I don't find them to be memorable or time worthy... but THANK GOD I was bored enough to read this. <<less

Hilarious with hints of romance and philosophy sprinkled in, this story made me bend over double in laughter more times than I could count!

Shen Jianguo, an ideology and politics graduate, is possibly the most oblivious man when it comes to the supernatural. And unexpectedly, this fact combined with his innate sense of righteousness, is what helps him become the inadvertent exorcist of a class of ghosts. The end goal being "graduation" aka, transcending to be reborn.

The fact that he does his actual job of exorcism, while believing he is only... more>> a simple teacher with important life values to impart, makes for a humorous read. Especially when the resident Chief Cultivator, Ning Tiance, keeps trying and failing to persuade him about the existence of ghosts.

Short and meaningful plot, well written characters and for a truly wonderful time that I had while reading this, I definitely recommend!

PS: The translator has a done a brilliant job as well, which just adds to it! <<less

This was very funny and sweet

I really loved the oblivious teacher shen.

Instead of the ghosts scaring humans, all the ghosts ended up being scared instead.

Haha a really good read!

Haha, great story!! Normally I would have rated 5 stars, but honestly, I think the overall rating is a little too high so I took down one. Quite comical and interesting, definitely very refreshing.

I love the MC so much. He's hilarious! He's very dense, but not in the typical annoying way. Rather, it's comical and highlights his genuine care for his students and his good heart. I also like the ML, he's not the typical OP ML from most stories at all. He's caring and their relationship is very sweet.

This... more>> story also excels at developing its side characters. Honestly, the goals are a little ambitious so there's still some plotholes (like I feel there could've been a better background for principal zhang? How could she have a part in all the students' lives smh those are all the fierce ghosts of H city!). Also, they didn't really explain why MC is the way he is. Anyway, for the most part it was very well handled given the length of the story. It didn't feel like anything was dragging on; at an appropriate time, MC learned the truth, and the story changed. It did feel a little bit like the author had to cut it short, but it wasn't too bad and wrapped up nicely.

All in all, recommended! Thanks to the translating group for their hard work! <<less

An incredibly humorous, well-paced BL novel (surprisingly deep as well) paired with a great translation.

If you're not a fan of horror, I would still recommend this. This novel isn't so much horror as more of a thriller/comedy mix. The MC is never written as in any real danger and the horror elements are treated with extreme ignorance for the comedy.

Love a strong, righteous (but very forgiving) MC. Other reviewers have described him as "lovable" which definitely fits. Really couldn't ask for a more wholesome story.

The only lack is PDA ???

I really love this story, it not only about trancending the fierce gost but also the life value that been welk crafted in this short story.

I really love on how the MC use his righteous brain and heart to teach the students, and how he flirt with the ML ???

... more>> For those who wants a hilarious short story with no heavy romance, this story suit you best.

I just wish we could get many extra with many perspective view... I wonder how the other students view MC ?? <<less

This is a new twist from the typical horror/ghost bl novels!

Summary:

Shen JianGuo is an upright Masters degree holder in political science/ideology. Finding a job with a degree in political science/ideology is difficult! After submitting job applications and being rejected by multiple companies, our MC is feeling down in the dumps when miraculously, one of the company responded back! But suspiciously enough, the job description is to teach students in the middle of the night? Desperate for a job that includes housing, the MC bravely marches forward to teach ghosts on... more>> Marxism and how to establish a correct world view!

MC: a super upright and strong believer of science and Marxism. The power of faith and righteousness can exorcist ghosts and transcend the evil! (Literally)

ML: a "celestial master" taught to exorcist ghosts since young and heir to a sect

ghosts: only want to reincarnate yet are subjected to a political ideology course and ab*sed by the teacher

Overall:

I am super satisfied with this novel! From the overpowered MC that can kickass to the poor ghosts that are scared to tears, this story is a breath of fresh air! I wish there were more unconventional stories like this one that brings smiles and laughter to the reader! <<less

Really wonderful read. Its considering a quite a light read. It’s abit like the master’sun, because most ghost had a very sad stories. But you have alots of laughter on Teacher Shen dialogs ar what actually happening. The fluff, I wish there’s more. But with such short chapter it’s wrap up nicely. Great translation and a recommended read. Tq

Plot Quality: 4/5

Entertainment Value: 5/5

Excellent story, absolutely hilarious!

Not really romance-focused. The MC is a good teacher who just wants to help his students. It doesn't matter at all to him that his students are ghosts HAHAHA If only the Chinese government doesn't ban homosexuality and ghosts in media, this would have been an excellent movie.

This is a comedy in disguise. Ghost cases are horrible, something that someone in the world goes through every day...

The fact that they can transcend makes me very happy; each case is very unfortunate. The way Shen Jianguo helps and guides them as if they were normal, living people is both funny and very sad. I know people like Shen exist, but it's truly stressful and tedious to deal with them.

As always, I would have liked to know more about the other 20 children, their personalities, and, honestly, their death... more>> cases. But even so, it was all very beautiful, a very quick, beautiful, and sentimental read. <<less

i read some pretty long novels before this, and boy was I glad to have found this one. It’s honestly a breath of fresh air, a witty and humorous book that’s also well written. The plot may seem like a joke at first, but it actually turns out to be really heartwarming and there’s no hidden twists or turns (thankfully) to keep track of, making it a light read perfect for any occasion. I think that if you’re looking for a lighthearted comedy, this is definitely a good choice. Personally,... more>> I really like it- it’s exactly what I needed after the previous novels I had read. Definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys some good old humor! <<less

Nice and short!! Super satisfying ending for ALL characters. The romance is severely underdeveloped so that’s why I only rated this 4 stars. Still an enjoyable read, funny! Not scary at all!

I've read a lot of webnovels now so I'm writing brief reviews to help myself remember :)

What I remembered most:

  • my first non-xianxia danmei
  • oh my god the comedy tag was not lying, I was busting a gut laughing
  • love me an emotionally dense but intellectually competent shou
  • it was short and sweet and the plot kept a nice pace
  • I like that it wasn't love at first sight for the ML and they were forced to work together
  • I also like that MC attracted all these disasters and had to have ML come lend a hand
  • omg MC took his ghost-teaching job so seriously kjasdhfjklsaf babes the job market is bad I know but ur students are covered in maggots and trying to kill u (T▽T)
Why I liked this:

  • so funny
  • but also a storyline that was genuinely heartfelt at moments
  • MC cares so much for his students 。゜゜ (´O`) ゜゜。 he solves their ghost problems in creative ways
  • tbh not much development on the ML and I didn't like the extras bc it was just a superficial retelling from ML's POV
  • but you know the shou is (almost) always my fav and this sweetheart here made everything so worth it~~
