One day, Shen Qiao, who was the sect leader of Mount Xuandu, the number one Daoist sect under the heavens, was challenged to a duel but somehow fell off the cliff.

Yan Wushi happened to pass by down there.

This is one of those novels I come back for once in a while.

The temperamental Yan Wushi and the steady as the Mt. Tai Shen Qiao.

I would say it's wholesome with a steady pace, not so much of a roller coaster ride like MXTX novels, but still is a perfectly fun read. The romance is not 'written in so many words', but you could kinda understand from the interactions ; and it didn't sprout one fine day, it was a very steady development. How two personalities like oil and water... more>> could understand, love and accept other, that was a complete surprise for me.

The other thing I liked about the novel, all of Meng Xi shi's novels, infact, is that all characters have their place. No one is 'out of place'.

Also, if I could, I would like to be like Shen Qiao one day.

💯 for translation.

- re -read the novel quite some time ago. Maybe I will update the review after I read again...... <<less

I think this novel will always be one of my favs.

The plotline is really great such as the characters and the couple.

The romance isn't much present for obvious reasons (yan wushi is a heartless shithead) but when there is, it's absolutely heartwarming.

Many people complain about the ML, but I find him interesting and true to himself. When he met our MC he didn't treat him differently but remained true to his character, that is an arrogant c*cky motherf*cker (but at least he has reasons for being c*cky, he's freaking... more>> powerful).

He isn't the typical misunderstood "villain" ML because he is an ACTUAL villain, a bad person. From the start to the end.

The MC is absolutely gorgeous magnificent beautiful I don't have any complaints for he is perfect.

The only thing that left me a bitter taste in my mouth was the ending which was really abrupt?? But other than that I really liked it, though the extras' timeline left me confused. <<less

Second re-read!

One of my favourites (although second to Peerless, which I’m excited to re-read next). So well-written that the dry historical background I usually am not able to stomach becomes palatable. Although the back plot is largely driven by political motivations (war, country unification, yadayada), at its heart it is a great romance novel and Wu gong pursuit story.

The characters are so dimensional that they hook you in and make you feel things. The MC is the typical sees-the-goodness-in-everyone kindness personified untouchable beauty but you get to see him grow... more>> from page one to have a better understanding of the world & dealing with the dark sides of ‘human nature’ while maintaining at core his beliefs and his personality. Besides that I love it when ML is the ultimate test of his patience and continuously renders him speechless with his shamelessness. Makes me simultaneously “... ” along with the MC, cover my face in embarrassment, yet hehe want to see some action.

The ML is a lovable rogue who cannot stop scheming. His character is quite an ass and always does heartless things just to ‘experiment’ which would normally irritate me but it’s written to be quite believable in that I do feel that when you get to that level of prowess for so long in a world that is fixated on ‘the pursuit of bettering yourself in your martial arts’ you can develop such tendencies where playing with the fate of people around him becomes his entertainment. But mixed in with his random whims are his detailed scheming and plots in his favour (which is making me so excited to read Peerless again) that you don’t expect. His betrayals hurt (I remember being so stunned when I read the first time) but he does suffer payback from them and we get to see him chasing the MC. The flirting is top-notch, and a pleasure to read for a romance-focused buff like me.

Overall, I do wish the pacing at the end were as well paced as the rest of the novel. (Felt it more the first read, on second read it does feel a bit more like loose ends being tied up so the plot progressing quickly) I also found myself asking in this second read about ML’s backstory more, how he grew up, more about this Xie people that I didn’t really catch in the novel; what were the factors that made him—like how we learnt about the MC’s.

And yay it’s getting an actual book which I’m really excited to buy next year.

On to Peerless! <<less

This has been one of the most beautifully written webnovels I have read--even among historical novels the prose and word choice stands out.

I had many reservations when I started but I am glad I continued reading.

When I first started reading I was worried about two things (1) there are so many names and places mentioned in the first couple chapters it is really hard to keep track (2) I was worried the main character Shen Qiu would be overly dumb and goody-goody. As you read more you eventually sort out... more>> who is who through constant exposure and Shen Qiu is anything but overly dumb.

This novel really made me reflect hard on the world and the kind of person in the world I want to be. It delves into themes of moral--what is right and wrong--and how we decide what is wrong. As well as sticking to one's true selves and remaining dedicated to one's morals against all odds. I found my world views and Shen Qiu's to be very similar, although I am far from matching his level of patience and grace.

The male lead is unbelievably c*cky and arrogant I wanted to cough up blood. Yet his wit and intelligence is undeniable. I have never met such an annoying man before but I could not help but still find him a likable character. Truly a miracle I never before would have thought a man so annoying could still be readable.

This story also has a lot of real historical references compared to other historical fiction pieces. The dynasties and leaders are based off of real people. It is up to you but you might not want to google names (of people like emperors and leaders) because they might turn up real results that hint at where the story will head.

This story is poetic and beautiful and vibrant and intelligent as well as extremely funny and interesting. I truly enjoyed it!!!!!! <<less

This is a very well-written and brilliant cultivation novel. It has a very engrossing plot and character development that will pique your interest.

The MC has a saint-like, righteous character that was challenged over and over again. I love how he used failures as stepping stone towards learning. I think that he's the character that really developed best. The ML was a demonic cultivator so he's a very proud character. I found him annoying at some chapters but realized that he can be quite good if he wants too.

Just a reminder:... more>> The romance was barely there, mostly shown towards the end and in the extras. <<less

in love with the world building. Enjoyed the fighting and the constant criticism of the jianghu from shen qiao. Very statisfying when shen qiao started rising up again. Enjoyed both characters. Disliked the multiple personalities arc. After finishing, I absolutely could buy that they became allies and even achieving some sort of deep mutual understanding of the other. Absolutely can not buy that they fell in love.

This novel is at its core about a relationship between two very different yet similar men. Both are martial artists: one believes all men are evil and power gives a person the right to do anything they want regardless of morals, the other man is a Daoist priest who believes in the genuine goodness of a human being and while he follows the Way, also doesn't hesitate to step in and eradicate evil if needed.

A twist of fate made them meet and what follows is a whirlwind journey of finding... more>> the truth of what happened to SQ against a backdrop of political and social upheaval.

The romance is there but is slow burn and underlies the interactions between the two men, because what they are both focused on is the fights between martial artists in the Jianghu, political instability, a possible foreign invasion, and mu*derous foes. Amid a lot of verbal bickering, philisophical arguments, and flirting between our main couple.

The language is beautiful and poetic, the fights are described very well, and the scope is large as various sects and kingdoms vie for power.

I strongly recommend the novel. It's unique among danmei works and yes there is a happy ending.

Ps: Don't be alarmed if you feel like killing YWS. Totally normal reaction for readers of this novel! XD He doesn't deserve SQ. <<less

Wow a really wuxia type of novel. If you are into it, this is a pretty good read!

.... MC (Shen Qiao) was on the verge of death. ML (Yan Wushi) finds and saves MC's life. He discovers how righteous MC is and therefore tries to break him out of his righteousness. As ML involves himself more and more trying to blackened MC, ML then starts to fall for MC. The story follows how MC takes back his status and fight for what's right.

The details and wordings in this story... more>> is really good. The story is beautifully described. Characters are well written, especially MC.

This novel is a really s..l..o..w.. burn. lol. But MC and ML their interactions and their chemistry are very cute. However I do wished there were more of it and LESS of the wuxia stuff!!😫

This story has many characters and each one have more than 1 name. So just a heads up, you might want to take note on who is who and write down all the names to each character, like said, each character has about 3 names so you will be CONFUSED! LOL!! It's a happy ending and a cute one too. Ending might feel like it's a bit quick, but I think it's cute!🤗

Gotta read the extras!

This novel was put on hold for a pretty long time, but luckily someone picked it up. Thank you for that, translator (s) !!! 🥰🥰 <<less

I love this novel so much it hurts. Now it is definitely one of my most favourite novels out there. Thousand Autumns has a special place in my heart.

I enjoyed absolutely every single word, paragraph, chapter... I was so immersed in the story that I just couldn't stop reading.

I loved all of it. The story as well as the characters. There were things that happened in ways I didn't expect and things some characters did that left me thinking.

Shen Qiao. I think Yan Wushi wasn't the only one who didn't... more>> expect A-Qiao to be such an amazing character. I was surprised as well. There are, of course, many other stories with main characters with a golden heart, who suffer and go through hell but would still rather break than bend. But somehow Shen Qiao felt so real to me, not just some saintly attributes attached to him, but rather as if it was the true him.

Everytime he'd cry, I would too, when he was happy, I would be overjoyed.

Yan Wushi was also something I didn't expect - for him to be as bad as he was in the majority of the novel first part of the novel. I was almost a little scared of him at that time. That's why it was so satisfying when Yan-zongzhu realised that his calculations and estimations failed when it came to Shen Qiao. They terribly failed and was the best failure of his life.

I am so happy that I got to read this amazing story, including all of it's heartwarming moments, the heartbreaking ones, as well as the slow-burn love story which is truly one of a kind. <<less

Thousand Autumns, and anything by the author really, is a breath of fresh air in an oversatured BL Chinese historical genre filled with tiring cliches.

What’s so different here? It has some of the most realistic characters and relationship growth I’ve read. Also, I love it when an ML remains true to character and isn’t contrivedly bent in ways to make the relationship progress faster.

I’m going to read all of the author’s books.

This novel deserves more than 5 stars alone from just the level of glee and satisfaction I felt for Shen Qiao whenever he blows others expectations of him out of the water. I enjoyed the world building, the poetic action sequences, and the laughs I got from Yan Wushi giving people sass. Will have to come back and finish this novel when I can find some good translations.

Another binge reading. This is so interesting. I am so into the martial art world and the swords etc. I really enjoyed it. The plot flows well and the character, the development, the romance are all soo great! The translation is beautifully done, it's a pity that it isn't completely translated yet. MTL is still kinda hard for me lol. Hopes that there will be a completed proper translation in the future, I would definitely re-read it again by then. Anyhow, it is great. Give it a try, highly recommend!!!

I... more>> really love Meng Xi Shi's writing styles, the wuxia world under her pen came out amazingly real and beautiful. Peerless written by the same author is also so great! <<less

The novel main focus is Shen Qiao's development, how his view of the world changes as he comes in contact with it. After falling off the cliff it is really as if he's reborn, he experiences ALL kinds of hardships, some due to fate some due to....*sigh*. He's of the most lovable and inspiring MCs there can be; he represents all that is good and meets the ML that represents all that is evil, as you can guess it is interesting but also very painful. I think it's important to... more>> mention that romance it's not something you're going to find much of in this novel, the relationship between the MC and ML is indeed important for the development of both characters and the development of the plot overall but not precisely because of its romantic nature.

There are lots of politics and intrigues, especially considering that it's based on some historical elements, it can get confusing so it's not a light-hearted plot at all, but it's exciting nonetheless. Some characters that at the start didn't seem important end up being very relevant so you can't overlook anybody.

About the relationship of the MC and ML:

Spoiler

It's until the very very very end of the main story (meaning without the extras) and they actually get together until the extra chapters. The romance was of my least favorite parts of the novel, individually the ML is also very interesting and has a lot of depth as well so I was also looking forward to him through the reading, it was just them getting together that left me a bit of a bittersweet feeling.

[collapse]

Overall it's very interesting, the author's writing is very nice, it truly makes you picture vivid images and feelings. The main character's development is really well done, you can see the growth and depth of Shen Qiao, I ended up very fond of him. The plot can be a bit heavy but once you pick up the pace it's interesting. <<less

For those who don’t like wuxia but want more romance and drama, this might not be for you. However, I really enjoyed this read because it is beautifully written, full of daoist philosophy, and focuses on the nature of what is deemed good or evil.

A lot of so generic villains are extremely likable and on the other hand the supposed “good” characters appear conniving to me. I guess it goes back to what the ML said about demonic sects of how they are honest in their evil while the good... more>> sects will go around back stabbing.

The MC who was once sheltered living away from the secular life comes to realize the difficulties of everyday life. He tastes kindness and evil, but strives to believe in goodness. The ML falls for him because of this, but it took A WHILE. Their relationship is really something else. <<less

First thing first, the romance department is understaffed.

I’m definitely a reader who is here for the romance and I honestly don’t know how the MC fell for the ML at all. The relationship between the main couple was well paced but it dragged on too long towards the end because of how the ML treated the MC. I did enjoy the relationship between the mains but I still can’t understand how the romance happened hahaha.

I hate every ounce of politics but the politics in this story is bearable. The storyline... more>> is good and I liked the side characters a lot. Overall, a good read with frustrating romance. <<less

I started to read this novel after the Peerless. To be honest, this on lacks a lot. First of all, one of the main advantages of Peerless was compact and easy plot, with little politics - here it is the opposite.

Can't help myself to feel so bored struggling through all that historical gibberish.

This is a novel worth reading! Main character, Shen Qiao, fell from the top position in a righteous sect to the very bottom and learned about humans from their worth side. This is a novel about what being a good person means and how can you survive in a cruel world while showing kindness and being true to your morals.

Characters are very well-build and three-dimensional, they seem like a real person with their own beliefs and reasons behind their actions. I like how ... more>>

Although the ML is the biggest piece of sh*t and deserves to rot in the deepest parts of hell.. I was moved by the calm und optimistic nature of the MC. His way of being able to get up after being mercilessly crushed made me cry so hard. I've seen some reviewers call him 'spineless' but I don't agree at all. You don't need to be a macho manly man and beat up people left and right to be considered 'strong'. He's so mentally strong It's admirable. The MC naturally... more>> does lack in the strength department after being poisoned and falling off a cliff.. Expecting him to recover so quickly is just not realistic at all. The ML pushes the MC into very nasty situations which damage his body further and destroy the progress he's made while recovering. This novel is not the 'I like you that's why I bully you' but the 'I bully you because I want to see you suffer' kind. So yea don't expect to see a change of heart from the ML.
