A lot more intresting then the other reviews made me belive, good thing I went ahead a read. Seems like a person dropped into a world and needs to finds his way into while unraveling some of the mysterious of the world. His "cheat" as so call it overwhelming but more of a slight detail in background as it's more of us own wit getting him out of danger. So yes this a good book so give a try.

The novel is absolute tr*sh, the real lowest of the low.

Basically the whole novel is just about MC being a plagiarist and everyone worshiping the ground he walks on. Which is fine. The thing that makes it so unbearable is he thinks he is actually an amazing person who earned all his achievements and that's how the author tries to write it. With zero irony or comedic arrogance he steals other peoples results and larps as real genius. He is always lecturing people about the true meaning of science and... more>> acting like some wise teacher and role model with quotes like "question everything" that leave everyone licking his boots.

All the characters and dialogue are complete shit. Plot doesn't exist really. First he plagiarizes music then he moves on to plagiarizing science. What's funny is that the start, where the author usually puts in some effort and planning, is actually the worst part, its incredibly confused and nonsensical. Zero effort or heart put into this novel at any point.

I also should mention that the romance is extremely advanced and deep cringe. There's a lot to unpack there but I'll pass because thinking about it might make me even less attractive. <<less

It was great in the beginning, before the MC left his hometown and all that sh*t about Arcana was introduced.

Then it became extremely boring, with long useless discussions about some basic concepts in science like the periodic table, making organic compounds etc. The author tries to show how primitive the other world's understanding of science is and how the MC brings about one revolution after another by publishing research papers. There is little to no action.

Also, the levels and fight scenes don't make sense. The MC finds a fight against... more>> a high level knight/ sorcerer exactly as hard as a fight against a lower level knight/ sorcerer (even though he fought against the higher level first).

In the end, he relies on his OP ring (that he won through plagiarizing this world's knowledge) to finish every fight.

I would like to make this review pretty short.

You will not regret reading this novel, the novel is in every aspect average with some interesting, but at the end uninspiringly carried out ideas. Like music, scientific research etc..

For further reading:

Main conflict - standard magevs mage vs. church. Transmigrated into another world - time to release modern world knowledge and claim it as his own. Show them who is the genius here! At first author acknowledges this point, later he forgets, and we get the standard fawning over things protagonist "does"... more>> and "knows". The main character is also pretty standard, useless, boring, gets caried by his cheat.

So yes you will not regret reading it, but you will not gain anything. Ok maybe... if you did not enjoyed a good education in basic sciences, you will get to experience blatant, unnecessary detailed rippoff of many important experiments etc.. Which may widen your horizont, if you decide to read further, the book is despite the lengths it goes in description, pretty limited in actual matter.

Conclusion: The WN has the right ideas, but the implimentation is just horrible. <<less

Just to let you know, I'm not someone who gives 5 stars just because I like a novel. I consider everything and very rarely does a novel cover all bases. That isn't to say this novel is perfect, but at worst it deserves a 4.6.

Now for the review:

You should know before reading that the first arc is not centered around magic, and it is slower than most novels. That said, the plot and the MC develop at a steady pace with clear reasoning behind the slow pace. That said, it... more>> all picks up after he leaves the first city and at that point you actually care about him.

The plot is clear and I enjoy it greatly. The thing that keeps most novels from being great is an unclear plot, and this one has a goal. Though some might not like it, it is the same goal as most scientists in our world.

The MC is weak at first but works hard to take control of his fate and he works efficiently. He is decisive, persistent, and relatively smart. He is reasonable in what he does and how he does it. It could be argued that he is a bit paranoid, but he is a sorcerer in a city that hates and burns sorcerers; in a world that he doesn't understand. I say he is reasonably cautious.

-His "power/cheat" is that he has a mental library that has books from Earth and it records new books from the new world when he looks at each page. At first I thought this would be a bit OP, and it is very powerful when used properly, but it only records the books and it isn't him memorizing them immediately. Even if he stores the books in his library he still must take the time to study them later.

So far, there hasn't been any real plot armor. All the times that he has been in a dangerous situation, he has managed it with spells, that were stated earlier, or his own calm nature; not "plot armor". Too many people describe past hard work and effort as "plot armor". Or they name it when the MC gets awesome items. These people forget that they are reading novel about a main character, of course the MC will get good items. "Plot armor" is real, but it is more like when the MC is about to die and suddenly awakens some, unheard of before, power within his blood or weapon, or a random character passes by and saves him. (Enough ranting lol)

The side characters are well fleshed out and are NOT just there to emphasize the MC's greatness. They each have their own desires and personalities. I don't like the princess much, but that is just a personal issue with her personality type.

With that, I leave you to decide whether to read this or not. Remember to take your time and enjoy it; should you choose to read. <<less

Fairly unique book. Haven't read anything really similar to it.

There are 3 groups in this novel. Sorcerers/Witches, the Church, and a demonic cult or something. Church is aboveground, while magic and demons are below (mostly).

MC's not dumb, whew. His cheat isn't even that strong (it's a plagiarism cheat lol). I like how he works hard/uses knowledge more than cheats. Even though his cheat is knowledge... eh, whatever.

The girls in the novel aren't annoying. I really like one of them... and kinda feel bad for her. The side characters are cool! I can't wait to see how they continue to show up in the future.

Bit of intrigue and mystery. Politics are slight. The magic system is complicated and requires knowledge and materials. Music in the story is important, you get about 80 chapters worth of music probably. Not bad. If it gets boring for you, just wait for the magic.

Main story completed review:

Overall, I could read it for close to 900 chapters. As a result, I'll give it five stars, even though there are some issues with the novel.

The worse thing about this novel: the author gave us waaaaay too much science info. I felt like they had a couple science textbooks nearby when writing. I had to slog through a bunch of science (used to explain magic), which is tiring.

The best thing about the novel: Interesting worldbuilding + decent characters. The MC might have been a little perfect, but it's nice seeing a MC with a brain. The FL was also pretty solid, though she could've been developed more.

The novel isn't as good as Lord of the Mysteries (later novel, one of the best, highly recommend), but the author has a distinct style that he probably developed through writing this novel. It's an alright read, but I'm not sure it's worth 900 chapters of reading.

Also, the ending of the main story came as a bit of a shock? I didn't expect it to just end like that. Wasn't a climax... just, "wait, it's over?" The side stories are quirky, but not that interesting. It's nice to see how other characters are doing later though. <<less

Actual rating: 2.5, when will novelupdates let us leave half-stars?!

Main cons:

  • I didn't vibe with the too-rapid development of magic/science in ridiculously short period of time that happened without the involvement of MC off-screen. It was enjoyable and balanced at first. But after mid-way point in the novel, we start seeing technological development in the country at large as 2-5 somewhat info-dumpy chapters at a time
  • This author loves fetishising lesbians and then going down the "male protag's d*ck was so good it 'cured' a lesbian from lesbianism". Basically, female lead was a masc lesbian and 'not like other girls'... right until the moment she hooks up with ML. She even keeps saying how much better he is compared to women. There are a lot of other instances of sexism as well, and male protag, despite being from modern times, is so adherent to masculine-feminine roles he doesn't let FL even lead one dance (!) in private bc his masculinity is just THAT fragile
  • Towards the ending, there is less and less magic and more science. Since the story involves a lot of various branches of higher science, it's not educational or inspiring, but just confusing and tedious to rid. We just get choppy paragraphs out of a science textbook
  • The beginning is somewhat slow. It was fine for me, but a lot of readers dropped it
  • MC is a hard-core plagiarist. If you hate stories where MC plagiarises real-world achievements and music, you will likely hate it. But, to his credit, towards the end of the story he branches off into making his own stuff AND he also at least tries to conduct experiments that prove the real-life knowledge
Some pros:

  • Unique spell system. Science as the basis of magic would have been an awesome idea had author reduced the scientific textbook excerpts
  • Other than occasional sexism and plagiarism, MC is actually quite pleasant and gentlemanly. He isn't a hormonal teen nor a mu*derhobo; he is good at socialising and pretty nice
  • Slice-of-life bits around living as a researcher. I wish we could have more of this kind of stories, where MC spends time on progressing their magic and not just fight-fight-fight

-The MC has no original thoughts and it makes no sense for the tag "Genius Protagonist" to be here. Everything he has done is copying knowledge from his "head library" till now. The music, the science projects, etc.

Natasha falls in love with Lucien and the other way around... This kind of ruined for me the novel in a way since Natasha was a great friend and she was yuri. There was no f*cking reason for her and the same goes for Lucien btw.

Throne of Magical Arcana is a novel that peaks extremely early and then just fails to deliver to the expectations, it's an ambitious project and a good read for the most part but it's far from what other reviews suggest.

Basically everything about the first arc is great, Lucien really has to struggle and starts from nothing.

We follow him has he sells tr*sh to survive and make enough money to get an education and become stong enough to protect himself and the people that care for him. He starts to learn... more>> magic to get stronger and music in order to make some money.

It's quite funny that at that point (end of this arc) the story could end because he has completed all of his objectives; he has money, he is strong enough to keep his family safe assuming he keeps a low profile and really he has no reason to seek further strenght besides the fact that "he likes magic".

But the story has to continue so he leaves Aalto, and here's where the story falls a bit, it's still good at this point because he is relatively weak compared to most real knights and sorcerers so there is always some kind of plotting going on and it's quite interesting and fun.

I'd say that the characters are definitely a weak point of this novel, the antagonists are pretty well written for the most part but they don't appear much and they never really pose a threat to anyone unfortunately but at least they are pretty cool and have realistic reasons and behaviors.

A direct consequence of this is the lack of tension in the late half of the story, the plot is quite decent don't get me wrong but since nothing is at stake at any point and there's never any chance that the Congress will lose you can't get too invested in the story.

The main cast on the other hand is... bad.

You are not given any reason to care about anyone besides MAYBE the FL, she is kinda interesting and at least manages to stay relevant but all the other characters are just out there doing nothing.

The author also likes to pretend some characters are important when they clearly are not, I can't tell you a single thing about Hathaway for example since she speaks like 3 times the whole story and has no background or personality besides being a "cold beauty" but for some reason she appears in every major conflict in the story.

It's quite disappointing really.

Lucien is a good MC for the most part but the more the story proceeds the more he becomes more and more generic and arrogant.

There is a point near the end where he faces his "demons" and it's just laughable tbh, I don't know why the author puts that in every story he writes (considering there's the same exact situation in The Sage who Trascends Samsara even if it's a bit better there) when he clearly can't write a compelling internal struggle, Lucien just owns his internal demons with some extremely basic reasoning and that's just boring.

He starts off as a great character and has some good development but I don't think he lived to his potential in any way.

I think 3.5 - 5 would be a more reasonable score, the story is great for at least half of it and even when it falls off a bit it's still quite good, the only part I'd say is bad is the ending.

I don't like how the final conflict unfolded at all and the fights in the last 100 or so chapters are nothing to write home about, it's just legendary item spam with some extremely powerful spells here and there.

All in all I'd still recommend this novel just don't read it expecting a masterpiece or anything like that. <<less

3/5 for being a bit slow and not my genre. Rather than the standard power jerk, it’s a knowledge jerk very inferior to Release That Witch with far less action and suspense than you would hope.

This is not an action packed novel, nor is it filled with much mystery or intrigue. The magic and fantasy aspects are just background highlights to the MC basking in the glory of modern day science and religion. The religion of course is bad science and very preachy, but it only requires skipping 5-6 chapters.

Tye... more>> MC’s cheat ability is a modern day library that he can close his eyes and access. The first 150 chapters are him using classical music to garner praise and admiration as he becomes a musician and composer. Also there is some magic he learns in the background. Later he joins the magicians, and we see him introduce the glories of modern science to garner praise from the wizards who already have a system of science and peer reviewed journals. The difficulties in getting his works published, and the praises for his contributions are major highlights of this arc.

The characters aren’t too bad, and the story is original and not just filler, but the action scenes are few and lacking. The pacing is very slow and there is not much suspense. He doesn’t really have a clear goal other than getting stronger which is usually the sign of a bad xianxia.

Not a terrible read if you have nothing else to read. While it isn’t completely filled with cliche tropes, it is pretty bland. I’d recommend reading release that witch, or when a mage revolts instead. <<less

Promising, so far. "Died and gone to another world, replacing some weak schmuk then learning magic" setup. Theres even witch trials and a hypocritical church who uses magic while condemning witches for using magic. However, the witch that gets burned at the stake seems to have actually been a deranged person. The story is relatively dark and oppresive feeling like any 'dark ages' story should. Nice world building and magic system.

I'd keep an eye on this one, but right now its a 'solid intro' thats got me intrigued.

I liked LoTM and was hoping this would be similar, but I ended up being disappointed.

The magic is very transparently D&D.

Ironically, the protagonist is the least scientific man on the planet, despite supposedly getting his power from science. Unfortunately, rather than proceeding through experiment to uncover truth, what he instead does is reference his original learned dogma, which somehow disproves wizards who have actual empirical evidence for their beliefs.

Like, if you can extract the life force from a guy's body and create an undead zombie, that's experimental proof that 'life... more>> force' is an actual thing. Fiddling around with synthesizing urea isn't gonna disprove that. <<less

If you haven't read Lord of the Mysteries before trying this, go read that masterpiece first. Since this novel has some twist and concepts that are kinda similar to LotM, it's best to experience those in the better novel first. And after reading LotM, lessen your expectations for this by about half.

After the Wizard World, Throne of Magical Arcana is the second sorcery Chinese novel I have read. So, had I a good time ?

The setting itself is a great one, taking inspiration from European History and fusing it with the classic fantasy themes, while still feeling original. Also important is the fact the fantasy elements are closely intertwined with modern sciences, not as two independant systems, but with the former being underlined by the latter. It is also shown in the power system, at least for sorcerers, given that their... more>> power is mostly linked to their arcane (scientific) knowledge, and the way the author introduces it in this world is both entertaining and educational (he does a great job at vulgarization). And, a small plus is that toward the end, the transmigration/reincarnation also gets a logical, "pseudo-scientific" explanation in relation with the power system, which is the best I've seen so far in a sorcery-type novel.

The characters are a great bunch. Lucien Evans is an awesome protagonist, clever, courageous but not foolhardy, insightful, proud but not obnoxious, he is the perfect main character for this story and his successes are not due to deus ex machina, but to his deductions, prudence and preparations. There is no plot armor that I can remember. His love interest, Natasha Orvarit is also a wonderful character in her own right, who could be the protagonist of her own novel, she is strong both in mind and body, intelligent, charismatic, a great knight and leader who can handle her own fights and partners wonderfully with Lucien. The other characters are also really well made, both recurring and one shot character, whether they are friends (John the childhood friend, Douglas the president of the congress of magic, Fernando the MC's mentor, Natasha's grandmother Hathaway, Rhine the Observer...), foes (the Popes, Mecantron, Dracula) or in-between (Felipe...) they all have deepth and uniqueness, none of them is to throw out.

As for the plot, it is just wonderful. Cuttlefish That Loves Diving gives us a tale to match the great characters, with a great narration that takes us through an adventure full of, not only magic, science and power, but also intrigue, mysteries and conspiracies. The author takes in this story with art and talent, the start is a tad slow, but it evolves soon in a great multi-layered narrative which progressively unveils its secrets, neither too fast or too slow.. It is not as long as most other Chinese novels, but it has no filler and is entertaining from start to finish. In fact, even the two short side-stories at the end of the novel (first a small sequel, then an equally short prequel) are great. I just don't good into details here to preserve the fun of the discovery. On a side note, the romance is a great aspect of the book. It progresses slowly but naturally and sincerely, a great plus compaired to most tales of the genre.

The translation's quality is excellent. Very few typos at the beginning then none, smooth retranscription of the mood and some explanations for the cases where the author uses specifically Chinese references, Henyee Translations does an amazing job, and I hope that they will carry on with the good work.

So in conclusion, Throne of Magical Arcana is one of the best novel I ever read. between the great characters, the fine setting and power system, the multi-leveled intrigue and the top-notch translation, you just can't go wrong with it. My final verdict is a full 10 out of 10. And it is with pleasure that I will later read other books from this author.

This story is about half as good as the next novel by the author. As I have read LoM first I found the writing style of LoM to be miles ahead in terms of both description of events, scenes and dialogue. The story has improved greatly from loooong monotonous walls of unnecessary psuedo science mumbo jumbo to moving on with an interesting story.

Albeit the obvious flaws (the walls of text could be skipped as no important story is missed) this story gives a glimpes of the creation of the LoM's... more>> many Gods especially lord of steam... There are better stories out there such as LoM or WoMW but nonetheless this is an interesting read and much better than most chinese wuxia or xianxia trope filled stories. <<less

Same author as LOTM, means it's already great, it's world building is on whole another level compare to other 2nd rate novel.

Unique plot and great character development and this novel shows how can someone use his/her previous world's knowledge to most.

Give a try and you'll love this #masterpiece.

Well, I can tell this novel is cutterfish's earlier work. Overall, it is good, but not consistent as Lord of the mysteries. Both MC shares many similarities (smart, has cheat which is useless if you are not intelligent enough, polite and noble, cold and ruthless when facing enemies,...). But there are still some flaw which make it inferior to lotm:

1. Info dump

2. MC making reckless decision makes him face too op enemies which can kill him with a glance. It make plot armor activate a lot of time. Even if... more>> some situation make sense, we can feel only MC can survive that and other people will die for sure if they face the same situation.

3. He makes too much attention when he is still weak, again attract a lot of op enemies.

4. Magic system and knight system is unclear. We dont know how powerful mage can be and it seem like it use the chinese fomula: when you rank up, you can use better skill so all your previous skill is useless. And knights is like mage but few skills and better with sword.

In short, it is good and you should read it. MC does involve and this novel has some epic moment

P.s: seriously, it has "fated lovers" and "strong love interest" tag but I see nothing in the first 300 chap. He only

Edit: f*ck with all I say before. The romance part is absolutely magnificant. No drama, no misunderstanding shit. They are both strong, both independence and both likeable. They talk to each other every day even though they are far away, they help and fight for each other during dangerous moment, they know a lot about their partner and faithful. This is the best romamce couple I have ever read. It is so natural and beautiful. <<less

Lots of unnecessary details are given with little to zero progress on the main storyline.

The progress in magic itself is annoying with those s*upid reagents and other boring stuff.

It is one of the best novels trying to combine science and magic in logical and perfect order. At the same time it has slow progress which is ideal for our smart and hardworking protogonist. He has something of a cheat but it does not make him super strong or super smart at once. So he still needs to learn and progress in his studies.

In my opinion it is mature version of Harry Potter. Harry was mostly for kids, but this story is mostyl for teens and adults.
