Chu Yang, the Ninth Master of the Nine Tribulations Sword, sacrificed almost everything he had for the sake of improving his martial arts, including the love of his life. After spending three years locating the fifth fragment of the Nine Tribulations Sword, he was ambushed by all sides at that very place. Mortally injured with no means of escape, Chu Yang executed a sacrificial technique by plunging the Nine Tribulations Sword into his very own heart. “With the blood of my heart, ten thousand tribulations will collapse!”

After witnessing the death of all his ambushers, Chu Yang’s vision began to darken. At a distance, moments before his death, he saw the mastermind who had plotted his downfall — Mo Tian Ji. With that, his eyes finally closed.

However, with a start, Chu Yang once again awoke to find that he had returned to when he was sixteen years of age! Furthermore, the Sword Spirit of the Nine Tribulations Sword now resided within his Dantian, the energy center of his body! From that very moment, Chu Yang would then begin to right all of his past regrets, and carve his very own legend by fulfilling his destiny as the final Master of the Nine Tribulations Sword, and defeating the Heavenly Devils beyond the realm of the Nine Heavens Continent.

I-hate-exclamation-marks.

This style of writing implies that the narrator is not impartial, which opposes the style that we see in the overwhelming majority of western literature.

Imagine Lovecraft writing something like "ZOMG!!! That spooky creature jumped on him from the ceiling!!!"

Feels silly, isn't it?

The reader is not able to react wholeheartedly and form his or her opinion because there is the narrator, imposing his attitude and opinion.

And, unfortunately, this idiosyncrasy completely ruins reading experience.

Overall - 1/5.

One of the best, and an absolute masterpiece. I have few gripes, none really the fault of the novel, or anyone in particular, really. Everything is done to the highest standard: characters, dialogue, narrative, world-building, micro- and macro- plots, pacing, complexity (and lack of an idiot plot, look it up if you don't know what that is), romance, humor (oh, the HUMOR) the list goes on and on. The only complaint I have is that it doesn't come out fast enough; combined with the way this novel grips you lending... more>> itself to binge reading, a reader may lose track of some of the side characters. The complexity of the novel's plot and the myriad of political and military machinations and espionage make it important to remember these characters, and a problem that followers of A Song of Ice and Fire (or Game of Thrones, for those heathens that watch tv as opposed to basking in the canon-ness of literature) are familiar with: who was that and why was he/she/it/topkek important again? This is a logistical problem, as if the release schedule is pushed, translation quality may drop, and not a soul should want that. In a world with some semblance of justice, this would get the lightning-fast translation speed of CD, ISSTH, or even less deserving works that are not on WW but rather under the oft-maligned Qidian umbrella, such as The Magus Era, and all would be right with the world. <<less

Unique. I am not sure but this one has unique elements to it that I haven't encountered in other novels.

Fun to read. Sometimes bland but if you can endure some blandness to it. You will stumble upon gems along the road over reading this novel.

I can say that the comedic attribute of this novel is not at the level that you would spit out your drink. But for having a serious start. Mixing simple comedy makes the whole scene profound.

I like it, the romance is kinda unsatisfying, the characters are... more>> a bit plane. And what I think the flaw of this novel is that

Spoiler

Everybody is connected to everybody. I mean, this novel is somehow has a lot of coincidence, For example.

Unknown to MC, He had a child, the mother's (MC's wife) Martial Teacher is the attending physician of MC's LONG LOST Grandpa. Along with MC's long lost mother and father that had not met before, They are somehow connected to people that MC had met before.

Reading this was a struggle, and it took me a while to figure out why.

The story is well written but excruciatingly slow paced. Don't get me wrong, there's trouble everywhere, but the tense and exciting or emotionally impactful incidents are miles apart. The author likes to talk about the Jiang Hu nonstop, which is amusing because there are rarely any life or death fights. There's lots of planning and step-taking and conversations, but it's all stuff that a faster-paced story would have covered in a few lines before moving on... more>> to more exciting moments.

In short, this story is so diluted with the "small stuff" that the bits with all the "good stuff" are few and far between.

It's not a boring story, but IMHO it's just not the effort of reading. It doesn't do anything well enough to stand out -- there's not enough danger for it to be a good action story, and the characters aren't interesting or dramatic enough for this to be a good drama. Contrary to common belief, developed characters does not make a good story. These characters, once developed, need to be interesting in and of themselves, and minus a few characters here and there, the cast's lives just aren't worth following.

If you're expecting high levels of action and lots of cultivating / treasure-finding / face-slapping then you've got the wrong story. Otherwise you may as well give it a try. Personally, I'm not a fan, which is a shame, because this has been on my to-read list for a while. At the end of the day, I was expecting something completely different. <<less

update: Score 3.5

Sorry. Story went to sh*t around chapter 480... plot holes and unrealistic human behaviour emerge.

Great Story in the beginning! The characters are well developed! The side characters make you feel their bond. Even the antagonists of this novel have their reasons for their actions. NOT the s*upid traditional xiaxuan *you embarrassed me so I must kill you* trope. The protagonist regrets the actions of his past life and does everything he can to change. The plot is relatively solid.

So why the -.4 ?

Spoiler

1. Around chapter 350, the author drags on with long rants by the main villain (this last over a 30 chapters or so)... it's just annoying.

2. You find out one of the villains has the power to single handedly wipe out everyone on the MC's side... yet he never does!!! He just lets the MC keep foiling his plans without lifting his own finger. These OP villains obviously kill lower realm people quite often with no repercussion... so why?

None-the-less, great read otherwise. I binged quite a bit and recommend this novel.

There is a reason this novel has so many 5 stars. <<less

Heartbreakingly bittersweet... Is what I'd call this novel.

Unlike the usual OP Male lead with a harem, the MC of this story Chu Yang, truly does not go searching for woman to fall for him, they just do. All of the characters in this story are extremely well developed, it made me reflect on the meaning of "there is always 2 sides to a story". While Chu Yang fought for one side in the war, the other side weren't all despicable human beings, they were just like him, humans with people... more>> they care for and goals they wish to reach.

I especially loved the women in this novel, they weren't degrading or weak as it usually is in these OP xianxia tropes. To be honest, it wasn't really a harem. There have been around two, and they were both under circumstances that did not allow their love to flourish, did not allow them to ever be able to confess, yet they would not hesitate to put Chu Yang's happiness first.

They were all strong, smart, independent women who silently fell in love with him, even when knowing his heart belongs to another. No one was two dimensional, I truly cried for some of them. They were willing to do anything for Chu Yang, give up everything, yet sometimes he wasn't even aware of it. Even then, they silently endured, not wishing to make things awkward and give Chu Yang pain. They all grew as people, and their devotedness for Chu Yang's happiness did not change, and they wished him well with his love, even when their heart was breaking into pieces.

Don't get me started on Chu Yang's martial brothers. They are all HILARIOUS. I died laughing during some moments, shed tears because of their devotedness to each other during others, and longed for such a relationship someday. They would go through hell and come back for one another, and even though their clans and circumstances sometimes put each other at odds, they always put the others first. They may seem petty and arrogant at first, but truly deep down, they are all amazing people who would die for those they care about.

The love and friendship in this novel is what truly seperates this from the others in my mind. Add in a genius, OP MC who is absolutely ridiculous, amazing characters, witty dialogue, ingenius tactics, and there you have Transcending the Nine Heavens. <<less

I truly love this LN, because it values intelligence more than strength. The MC is exceptional who values friendship and honesty more than violence and greed. The author was successful in creating a masterpiece in this genre through his powerful writing.

Another masterpiece from Fenglin Tianxia.

Start with reset life plot like any other novels which makes me feel kinda dull. (Seriously? Like theres no other plot to begin a story?). But overall the story aint so bad. The main idea of the story goes around how MC try to change the future of him and his gf by changing the overall future of the present time. The story written epicly with the authors sense of humour that gonna make u laugh n shake ur head.

Recommended for those who seek a smart... more>> n funny novel. <<less

I'm rating this 5 stars. The writing must be one off the best I've ever seen in ahh these novels I have read and would actually be more publishable than the likes of fifty shades. The start was pretty slow but just enough to establish a solid idea of their world. Another thing I love here is the characters and their character. Be it protagonist or antagonists, the author gave them life that you could not see in most wuxia novels. You could feel their emotions and experiences especially when... more>> they're in battle or when before they die. You just couldn't help but feel for the characters even though theirs they're antagonists especially when the author would establish who they are and why they're doing things they do.

I couldn't wait for more and I wish that the translators would release more frequently especially seeing that the novel is already complete in China. <<less

A really good novel. Like other similar novels of the same genre there will be the cliche's but it makes up for it in the comedy, action and overall good entertaining story that comes along with it. The main character is very interesting with his knowledge and actions. Not to mention side characters that are entertaining and actually have decent development for once and not just disappear as the novel progress. If that doesn't make you at least interest in this novel then the bond of brotherhood that is showcase... more>> in this novel will as its one of the main selling point of this novel. <<less

The thing is, it's a very good novel, definitely one of the best around. However. There's room for improvement, as always. One of the things that bothers me the most is how the author has skipped over the part where you see what the people who are weak do and how they get on. Don't misunderstand because the MC starts weak, It's really not touched upon at all. He just employs other people and practically doesn't fight beyond training montage things. Power in this novel is not clearly defined at... more>> all. At the beginning of the story, MC pulls out ninja sh*t and has evil eyes like he's killed thousands of men. Ni*ga you haven't even fought anyone strong at all. Everything in the story pretty much goes up to revered and king level in the conflicts, everyone else is largely irrelevant. They're only there to make the experts look like hot shit. It is both a slow moving story in that there are a lot of things to write about, and he has a lot of character moments, but it is also a fast moving story that has made the lower three heavens seem completely irrelevant. <<less

Outstanding Wuxia as for once the antagonists are not mindless rapists who are evil for the sake of being evil. This series is a truly well though out saga where you even come to respect the protagonists enemies which makes we care and respect more for the protagonist who is able to outsmart them. I truly beleve this work is at a good enough level to publish or officially translate but until then I will just keep donating :) Wish it wasn't so hard to donate money to the authors... more>> when you only understand English :P <<less

A really good novem. Well written, well balanced. We may be dealing with classical growth of young talent, close to TDG in term of initial plot, it is clearly a step ahead.

Not focus on fight, mind game and war game, for once we have an author whom value wisdom and intellect as much as strength.

Up to chapter 155

It's a good and interesting story so far, with interesting characters and politics. It's too bad that the author's childish idea of a joke doesn't get past poop and farts imo.

It's a good story, but most of the times the reactions of characters are overly exaggerated (which makes it annoying) and very often the author writes vulgar lines making you wonder why he didn't just use normal words instead of often mentioning wiping people's butts, public farting and people having hemorroids.

4/5 I've really enjoyed this novel. Has an intelligent MC that is smart and calculating and not just killing everyone that offends him, has good character development, with characters having personality and their own thoughts. It also has a good plot that is fairly interesting and not just the usual revenge plot line where the MC destroys the enemies entire clan, but with political schemes and actual thinking going on between the MC and the antagonist not just pure brawn and fighting.

Love reading Fengling Tianxia's novels. 9/10 of his novels are very well written. TTNH in my opinion is his best work till this date.

For this novel the term 'brotherhood' is the core principle of the story. MC with his brothers transcends the nine heavens supporting each other in every turn which is quite heart warming and interesting to read. There's comedy and there's scheming.

The romance is hit or miss among his harem members.

The cultivation is strong but mild. There are no destroying stars with a single punch or stuff. It's... more>> just strong enough to destroy the mountains or rivers. This doesn't feel that bad and it fits the story quite well.

It's like people chasing higher strength rather than immortality or godhood. <<less

First things first: I enjoyed it. It was a typical verbose translated Xianxia with lots of fights and cultivation.

Some specifics: I could only find a part of it translated, and had to read the last 1000+ chapters in decent machine translation, which is still not great, so overall not too bad, but it's a challenge.

There is a small harem, but it's pretty much set at the beginning and the women stay with the MC to the end, and get strong and fight along with the MC. There are even a... more>> couple of supporting characters whose wives are also their comrades. Overall, not bad. Except for the four women, there is no flirting with other women. There was an unfortunate use of aphrodisiac early in the plot.

Some of humor is very funny, but unfortunately some of it is very juvenile; up to (down to?) bathroom joke. In the beginning it might be appropriate since the MC and his friends are teen/early twenties boys, but still annoying.

A lot of friendly interactions are clumsy. People express friendliness by beating each other up (without cultivation), even a woman does that at times. Husbands are periodically shown as very henpecked; showing intimacy is apparently is a challenge for this author (as it is for his characters).

Cultivation levels are okay in the beginnings, but very fuzzy and confusing towards the end. The MC sometimes can jump levels to fight, and other times cannot.

The usual Xianxia exaggerated numbers. World-building is sometimes quite inconsistent. Plot armor is uneven -- sometimes the MC gets the benefit of incredible luck, but once in a while, everything (deliberately) goes against him.

A bunch of things are unexplained at the end, but the major plot conflicts are resolved.

Despite its flaws and period treatment of supporting characters an cannon fodder, the MC shows quite a bit of decency in his relationship with family, sworn brothers, his love interest (4 women), and generally avoiding mass slaughter. <<less

🔸Well-written antagonists.

🔸Great schemes.

🔸Comedy hit or miss (Still good if I must say)

🔸Average in cultivation aspect.

🔸Characters are quite unique, but not all are likable for me.
🔸Bad romance.

It's not a bad story but I started losing interest seeing MC losing his sh*t trying to flirt to a 9 year old QingWu.. I'm not that against it actually, i've read worse but it's annoying to see the MC losing his rationality whenever he is with QingWu and his maturity is gone, becoming a comedy guy. Such a big downgrade in character.

After I started losing interest I decided to read some spoilers hoping to find some morivation to continue. After reading some more spoilers I judged that romance aspect in this novel is quite ret*rded and would ruin my reading experience alot.

Overall I enjoyed the schemes and manipulations battle, I love these kind of antagonists that possess reason and quite the rational characters. This story isn't a bad read but it has lots of annoying parts and quite hard to enjoy. I still recommend for others to try reading it, despite my opinions of this novel I can see why it has lots of high rating.
