T*ash of the Count’s Family

Description

When I opened my eyes, I was inside a novel.

[The Birth of a Hero].

[The Birth of a Hero] was a novel focused on the adventures of the main character, Choi Han, a high school boy who was transported to a different dimension from Earth, along with the birth of the numerous heroes of the continent.

I became a part of that novel as the tr*sh of the Count’s family, the family that oversaw the territory where the first village that Choi Han visits is located.

The problem is that Choi Han becomes twisted after that village, and everyone in it, is destroyed by assassins.

The bigger problem is the fact that this s*upid tr*sh who I’ve become doesn’t know about what happened in the village and messes with Choi Han, only to get beaten to a pulp.

“…This is going to be a headache.”

I feel like something serious has happened to me.

But it was worth trying to make this my new life.

This story is a weirdly frustrating read. The MC spends way too much time explaining, and yet doesn't explain hardly anything of importance. The story is constantly spoiled by the MC explaining exactly what 'will' happen, then that 'past plot' is twisted in really pretty predictable ways. Most of the characters have less depth than the words they're described with, but there are constant random moments of strong personality from them. Supporting characters are even more two-dimensional, and are dropped in and out of the story with little description or... more>> context. Also I just find the MCs attitude to be really irritating, not 'tsundere' at all just ignorant to the extreme; its as though he has no understanding of why people might notice him acting completely differently, or how his interventions would change the 'plot'. <<less

Definitely a slow start. I started reading this a year ago. Put it down around chapter 100, and picked it up again recently and have caught up to the recent translations.

Good points:

  • Excellent translation.
  • The author has planned out much of the story in advance. It's nice to read about something that was foreshadowed in the beginning of the novel.
  • The humour.
  • Interesting plot and world-building.
Meh points:

  • Cale can be somewhat frustrating at times. Overall a great character, but sometime his cluelessness when it comes to himself can get frustrating.
  • Recent volume after the long volume 1 seems to be a bit rushed compared to the 800 or so chapters of the first volume.
This was a novel that kept me entertained, and wasn't one where you had to 'think hard' about (eg. LoTM). Definitely recommend for... more>> a relaxing read. <<less

I liked it, but then it got really stale. Political stuff is interesting, but the OP stuff just trivializes everything. The humor is touch and go, the interesting side characters get the background treatment.

The problem is that everything becomes uninteresting when you realize that the thrill was when the MC was at his weakest- the beginning, and the author hasn’t really developed a credible threat to him, at all. The MC raised a god-like being and any problem can be explained away.

The story becomes a power fantasy without the sauce-... more>> he is already a part of the richest family, he’s smarter than everyone, he knows everything, he is super clever, he has connections around the world, he can convince and befriend everyone, he’s protected by op items and beings- do I need to say more?

I gave up when the plot starts to repeat and we had to suffer another disguise arc. <<less

This novel has amazing storyline. Everything is connect and that's what make this novel is enjoyable. Everything that happen have reason.

The MC is more realistic. Just think about it, who people out there who wanna got hurt? From the start the title is 'tr*sh of...' so ofc he is tr*sh. Furthermore he's introvert. He's feign ignoran of another's affection but you will find the answer if you read until the end. But is not like he abandon another, he still do wht he need to. It's just his character. Like... more>> our cuty baby said, Cale is wierd but a good person. <<less

Review

This novel somewhat interesting, but average at best. Its definitely overrated by a sh*t ton. I would have given it three stars, but I'm giving it 2 stars to balance out the overrated-ness. I thought it was boring when I first read it, but then I reread it, and I thought 'well maybe its not all that bad'. The MC Cale, is a reluctant (tsundere) hero, who meddles with every big problem in the novel and scams everyone he meets right after stating that he wants to live a quiet... more>> life with no trouble. The plot is slow and gets repetitive at times. This was what threw me off the first time I read it. I'm the type of person who likes a fast paced story that doesn't waste words, so if you don't like slow-paced plot stories, this novel probably isn't for you. I think whether you like this novel or not depends solely on your personal tastes, but its not for me. <<less

This novel is very, very great. It's seriously my cup of tea. This is perfect in its own imperfection. One of the things that I learned in this novel:

Heroes have their own heroes too.

I'm gonna edit this review when this has already completed but for now, so far, so good.

I rate this novel 3.5, maybe 4 tops. The novel started off so good that I feel every character adorable. The idea of going inside a novel is kinda like a copycat of the novel's extra but this one did it better. Up to my latest chapter, the plot was decent and could definitely tell right off the bat that it's a whole lot better than other light novel dregs out there. There's just one critical problem of this novel for me. It gets repetitive.

The characters' dialogue and banter just... more>> keeps getting repetitive that is making it so cringe worthy.
Spoiler

Raon telling he's great and mighty. Cale wants to smackpeople the back of their head. About Cale's smile. Clopeh's crazy praises. There's a lot of dialogues getting repeated. Even events get repeated. They defeat an enemy then make them submit to add their roster. They steal something from their enemies and use what they stole to clap them etc.

[collapse]
It gives you chills at first, and even made me laugh and cry. A good analogy to this is the first seasons of pokemon anime wherein each and every episode team rocket tells their cringy dialogue while posing. Another one is in the Strike the Blood, wherein before every part before battle they say "This my fight. No senpai, this is our fight".

Worthy to read? Yes. But dont expect something grand <<less

Finally a weak MC. An MC who's truly not interested in levelling up and becoming a hero, but it happens as the story progress even though MC tries his best to avoid spotlights. It's really a fun read as the MC who's not interested in any adventure does all stuff he is trying so hard to avoid without even knowing. The author did a really good job as the MC character is preserved and happenings around him are with logic and flow naturally. The only thing that lacks until now... more>> is a romance, but with MC's character, I guess he will find it troublesome. <<less

is the tsundere dragon we wanted from the slime isekai, and once he enters the party, the book has changed for ever.

By far, this is my favorite light novel I have ever read. I feel like this novel like of spins the common tropes found in the isekai genre, especially in the "reincarnated as the villain\mob" genre thats poped up as of late. Now, some poeple think this is about a guy that knows the future, trying to get ride of his 'bad end' but he literally escapes is bad end in chapter 3, and his future knowledge is more like "these people are strong" and "something happens in this location" at some point... and the novel has already diverged from his book. Its more like he is a spy master then an isekai protag--he actually becomes one as the story goes on and his book knowledge becomes more useless.

For example, all lolis are kept in animal form 90% of the time. like what, could you imagine that? Animal loli's being in their animal form at almost all times becuase they perfer that form and only turning into lolies when they have to? wow.
Spoiler

though we only have 2/3 loli forms explored, roan's human from is still a mystery... lol

[collapse]
While the novel does have 'misunderstanding' trope used, its not like how they are in other fics. The misunderstanding are almost always on his minions point of view--its rare when our protag does it

For example,
Spoiler

Cal, coughing up blood: "Sh*t I didn't think this would hurt! NEVER DOING THAT AGAIN" *cries internally*

Everyone else: "how SELF SACRIFICING, he did that even knowing he would cough out blood!"

[collapse]

Other things to note: The character names are easy to remember becuase they are all spelled very differently. You know pain when you got a Hisashi and a Hizashi and you get them confused for half the book. Only character with a similar name is Cal and Cage, and Cage isn't really introduced for like a long time and is a priestess and normally gets their title added with their name. This novel is such a gem. I think I fell in love with this novel later on when how the little parts of the plot was weaved together. Characters you met now would appear later. And the revealing aspect of this novel is very natural. You can tell the author took the time to build a concrete storyline.

It's a pity people rated this novel so poorly because even if you quickly judge, it deserves to be at least a 3. The MC only knows up to the fourth (?) volume... more>> so he doesn't know it all and BECAUSE he changes HIS CHARACTER'S plot, there's character development in OTHER characters that the ORIGINAL MC wouldn't have done. The major plot hasn't changed & original MC's strength hasn't changed either.

Cale's desire to be a slacker DOESN'T conflict with what he is doing. For me, I know that if I want to live a comfortable lifestyle later on, I need to work hard now. This also has to do with his personality to help others even though he says he'll be a bystander. So really, you just got to have the intelligence to not take Cale's monologues by themselves, but see his actions - WHICH IS WHY the other characters respect him & believe he got their backs.

The character interactions are well done with variety of memorable personalities, and makes me laugh & excited for each new update. SIDE CHARACTERS GOT THEIR SCREEN TIME, but not in the annoying way others authors have done. <<less

This novel is has both pros and cons, but overall it is amazing in my opinion.

Pros: plot twists which makes you certain but also uncertain about the future. One change of the plot leads to many unexpected changes and the ambiguity of why is the reason this novel is so compelling. The reality is you can never uncover all the reasons for everything and your actions will always have unexpected consequences. MC is more of a natural leader which you can't help but want to follow. He is basically a... more>> selfish weakling who scams others and relies on powers and he knows it. Yet you can see how he became that way due to a past trama which he does not wallow in self pity. Most people can't follow his logic, but essentially he just wants a peaceful life and I like how he does not put himself in unnecessary situations such as heroic savings or unnecessarily making strong allies just to satisfy plot. Both heroes and villians can't help but admire him. No fillers such as side character background or pov. Readers analyze them through eyes of MC and sometimes they sound confuzing but one can never truly understand the stories and thoughts behind every character. Also MC does not mess up by revealing a secret or saying something out of bounds causing suspicion. Even I sometimes forget there are some things that must not be revealed to certain ppl. Also very funny moments where MC is like "how the hell did I end up with these idiots sign..." I felt like I gained some internal unjuries from suppresing laughter.

The best part is the revenge section. Most stories is like "You hurt me so I will pay back a thousand times and end up destroying you" or "damn this enemy is persistent and can never die and phew I finally got rid of him... the end" This story gets revenge at a very satisfying way. What pisses off the enemy? Mess up their plans halfway through rather than waiting for the end and cleaning up afterward. What is the best revenge? Let them have a taste of their own medicine. What annoys the villians? Hit and run. Ambushes. Stealing their stuff. Never revealing own identity or leaving evidence behind.

Cons: too much characters, although each is well developed, it gets overwhelming. Also a little too much coincidences where his prior knowledge always comes in play or he accidentaly comes upon a super important item or person and has no choice to save them, of course not without scamming or gaining something in return. But I get why because author need to keep the story interesting.

Overall good novel. Lol I may be a little biased in weighing pros and cons since I thought this was the best novel so far. Ironically MC is weakest amongst all his companions and makes them do all the hard work but they still respect him since he is very reliable and capable. The side characters are not blind followers but are all smart which as you can see makes the MC even more worth admiring. <<less

I think it is very realistic that Cale himself doesn’t know that he is getting attached to them.

The plot is really interesting and fun along with the awesome characters.

Spoiler

I think it has a lot of development in the plot how the organisation, mermaid, whale, crown prince, and etc are all connected in some ways and it makes it more creative and increase people’s curiosity.

I can also see the other character’s development through out the story while they come in touch with the MC, Cale. Like how others impression of Cale helps us to have an understanding of character and there the writer develop more detail.

I also like the development in relationship between MC and his people, how they are getting attached and loyal. <<less

This novel follows a common premise of transmigrating into a petty villain’s body. Frankly, I don’t like those kinds of stories much but I decided to give it a shot, and I’m glad I did.

The main character is weak, and conflict resolution is handled completely by using other people, or social methods. So far, the transition of the character going from tr*sh to what he is becoming has been handled very nicely. Most social interactions are heartwarming so far.

I’m not sure if the interactions will continue along this route, but... more>> seeing how well the writer has handled all the things they have done so far, I am sure that whatever they do will end up being good.

All in all, I would recommend this! If you are looking for a main character who handles their problems through other people, or through words this would be a great choice! <<less

We love self-sacrificial MCs around here lol. MC always claims he's doing things for selfish reasons and that he just wants to live a quiet and leisurely life without caring about anything and anyone, but he always ends up coughing blood and saving others haha. He's the biggest money-loving scammer known to man, he's smart but also super dense when shown affection T T. I love that he's not a pushover and WILL get back at anyone who hurts him or the people he cares about. Aside from MC, other... more>> characters are well-written too. The main squad is a found family that cares about each other so much, they especially care about MC and are ready to kill for him. I like the pacing and the world-building, the story is filled with funny, cute, bittersweet, and action scenes.

This review is probably subjective but I'm not the biggest reader and the fact that I'm still reading and very much still in love after 200 chapters says a lot. <<less

IT WAS SO GOOOD?????

I usually find it hard to read novels that go ahead 400 or so chapters at most. Even if I love the characters, I still struggle (an example can be orv, I LOVE it but it's just so long???) but this one?? I gobbled it up like there was no tomorrow!

I haven't touched part 2 yet, but I really loved this story.

It was definitely a read, I dedicated a good few weeks to finishing this series. If you're a fan of world building, plot twists and action/adventure I definitely recommend this series. Though there were times where I had to take a step back and so I could just try and recall the overwhelming amount of characters introduced.

MC was an absolute delight, he was lazy and petulant and beautifully tragic. So much of his personality was multifaceted and when each... more>> bit of his and OG!Cale's past came out!!! Just *mwah*! It really felt like a getting to know a character seriously and deeply, peeling back all of the layers of indifference and complicated tangles of relationships to find the true depth of everyone.

The action was engaging, at times hilarious and at times heart breaking. Some of the God concepts and the actual like trenches we had to dig in the past to figure things out? I could have likely gone without... Like I can understand the world-building put into these sections, the mysteries from the past and how simple deviations can cause colossal consequences. I can acknowledge why these arcs exist and still think that they were a bit much, even when set in a world of fantasy and a whole variety of different species.

Granted, I think a lot of the motto for this series was 'there's never too much of a good thing' because each story, each character added to the narrative, even if we don't discover their or its importance until hundred of chapters later. I know I've read longer webnovels, but this is one of those reads where I think if you are more focused on story than characters, you might not enjoy it. The story itself is pretty fun, engaging and interesting, but it's also deeply drawn out and there are times where you have to be real patient for certain things to become relevant or to be explained more fairly. If you prefer the standard OP characters, I also would not recommend this. While Cale is somewhat an OP MC, with a pretty damn hefty amount of plot armour, a lot of his strength comes in both his character and his intelligence, not particularly in his fighting skills.

Would I recommend this novel to anyone? Yes, a hundred times over. Do I think everyone will love it? Hmm, no, not particularly. But if you liked ORV and want something a little bit more tamed and with slightly less tragedy, then fr read this. (Please take note of the little bit and the slightly less when reading that last sentence) <<less

I really like the story with their huge background setting along with a very alive character (in my opinion) and also I really like the MC personality. If you want to read a story with the exact MC like Cale, I recommend :

" Theatrical Regression Life "

the MC of that story is almost the exact copy of Cale. Always sacrifice himself ; always thinking that he was just doing what he had to do, not knowing that he always helping others ; puzzled by other people concern about himself,... more>> not understanding that it was always him that got hurt ; the only difference is probably the background setting in the story and way more of the extreme side in his personality. <<less

i have way too many things to say about this novel.

way too many.

when I read 200 chapters, I made a review about why I gave it a 10/10.

... more>> when I passed 300, I changed my review to explain why its an 11/10.

now... I realize its pointless to use numbers to rate this masterpiece of a novel. if chapters 1-200 were the reason why this became my favorite novel, then the chapters after that just threw the scales out the window. after writing essay-long reviews and changing them about a dozen times as I read through the novel, I decided to forgo any intellectual-sounding review and just wing it as a big fan gushing about my favorite novel.

whenever I thought "oh this arc is my favorite... too bad it ended, " I get hit with a new, thrilling arc that doesnt pale in comparison to the previous, nor does it make the previous arc look worse. no part of the novel is better than the other because... everything is just too good when placed together, to the point it feels ridiculous to rate any of the arcs as a standalone.

Spoiler

in the first war arc... where it starts with cale battling it out within the henituse territory, then immediately after we're bombarded with a sequence of battles along the roan kingdom that signaled the start of a war. then it involved the whole continent, cale being at the heart of it all without gaining any rest.

[collapse]

for the 3 years ive been reading this, ive taken a lot of breaks during the "bland" (or so I thought) clean-up moments after an exciting arc. yet whenever I get back to reading, I always,

without fail, regret ever stopping it in the first place. "after this, the story wont probably be as exciting, the quality might drop later"? what a s*upid, naive thought. its happened so many times that I learned to never let my guard down. because im always at the end of my toes and get caught off guard when I least expect it, I resolved myself to drop every other novel im reading and at least finish part 1 of tocf

at the current chapters that im at... I realize that the "bland" moments are not the calm after the storm, but are the calm before an even bigger, possibly heart-wrenching and soul crushing typhoon.

the story doesnt revolve around happy go lucky scenarios. on the contrary, despite the heartwarming moments of the found family trope, theres always some underlying dark secret behind each individual. the original cale, aka kim rok soo? on and hong? even that scary butler, ron? at the start it might seem like the beginning of a big adventure to get a slacker life and/or maybe save the world as a side quest while collecting more people to add to cales family... but later on you see just how f*cked up the world inside tocf can be. this is why I came to cherish the peaceful times in later chapters, because i

know it wont be long before they face danger again. I sort of understand how cale feels, always wanting his family to be safe. as a reader, I read while cheering them on, hoping not for them to become stronger, but to be safe and continue living peacefully together.

with powerful beings right by cales side, you might think that hes practically invincible. "theres no point to the battles, isnt he just gonna win by coughing up some blood and gaining everyones sympathy?" yeah, it happens a lot and has become a running gag. but when the author wants to, somehow some battles got me grasping at my chest in anxiety, questioning whether cale and his family would leave unscathed.

and thats the thing. raon is a mighty dragon, but hes young and powerless against some of the enemies they face up against. just as cales family members are all powerful, their foes are as formidable, putting a balance of some sort to things.

tocf is unique in a way thats cliche, or it could be said its cliche in a way thats unique. it adheres to the current trend of isekai stories enough that it would interest avid isekai fans like myself, but its story is so much deeper than that, where I think its so appealing to so many, whether you be a fan of novels with the same genre or not. the reason why its my favorite novel is because it scratches all the tropes I want for a story.

  • op MC - hes weak yes, but having op allies and a dragon by his side is enough to be an op MC for me
  • found family - as long as that person isnt an enemy, hell even if that person was a former enemy, they keep becoming his family
  • has a reputation as being just and good, but isnt as naive or s*upid
    Spoiler

hes actually really kind hearted, but he brushes his affection off and excuses it to be "schemes" when he just wants to help

    [collapse]
  • smart, scheming MC - despite the spoiler above, cale doesnt hesitate to use his tr*shy ways to get "what he wants" aka things that just so happen to benefit others more than himself
  • lovable, nonhuman companions - raon, on and hong being his best children
  • loved by everyone around him - even alberu who calls him an annoying bastard not so secretly cares about him as well
  • NO ROMANCE - this is actually the number 1 reason... whenever an action or adventure-based novel gets romance, my rating of it immediately drops. tocf doesnt even have anyone explicitly develop feelings for cale; which is why it feels all the more fluffy with the family moments containing pure, familial affection
  • and the list goes on
despite the trials of time management and my pitiful attention span, ive keep rereading tocf all over again because its charm never gets old. always exciting and always heartwarming, its sort of my comfort novel that makes me thrilled just by reading. its like it just has the right amount of sugar and salt. picking at your sweet tooth at all the right moments, then adding a bit of salt to keep the flavor interesting <<less

Hi! My review will be quite simple but keep in mind English isn't my native language! Is not even my second language is my 3th! so I might get confused!

Now, I started this novel as a simple fun thing to read, nothing more than a small expectation, I didnt f*cking know what I was getting myself into

i been reading for more than a year now, wow

... more>> You start thinking is a normal reincarnation novel, Oh how wrong you are you little summer child

It soon turns out there is much more, you might think it feels rushed or things are going too fast, we have 700+ chaps in the first volume only, if it went slower we would have died before the first volume finished, honestly.

The characters are interesting and amazing, especially female character are pictured as, well normal human beings (thank you that's surprisingly hard in novels somehow) They have good roles, they aren't love interests and they can do everything they want (I'm still dreaming of when Jopis will appear again) Anyways every character has some type of depth and character development, which makes a amazing story on its own

BUT IS NOT ONLY THAT, we also have amazing world building, like honestly amazing, Roan Kingdom and Alberu's prophecy for example, or the Ancient times.

And one of my favorite things is how Cale is narrated, he seems cruel at first, he doesn't want to help like other Mc's he just want money and to slack (me too Cale mee too) but the more you read the more you realize is nothing like that, he is so traumatized man, he has his own reasons and he isn't cruel at all, he is also oblivious about the fact that people care a lot about him, and all this has its own reason, is so perfectly narrated that if you don't squint you don't notice.

We might get examples of how nice he actually is by seeing how he never lets his kids get into anything dangerous or not under his control, even with Raon, who is a f*cking dragon btw, he stills tries to take care of him, he uses excuses sometimes to explain this but if you keep reading his excuses become worse and worse to the point where is obvious that he cares.

Now let's talk about my favorite character, drums please, is.... Kim Rok Soo! or OgCale ahah yeah His character has so much dept and is given in like some characters randomly, mostly in the first chapters, for no reason at that, he's a cutie in a way that you could compare him to a big old lazy dog ahah He has a really good personality that compliments Cale's a shame they won't meet again, at least for now

Thanks to KRS (OgCale) we get to know lots of things about Thames! Even if we don't know yet why is important we know it is, the plot thickens ahah

Anyways one of the best things for me is the fact that there is no romance, for that we can use fanfiction anyways but the lack of romance lets you enjoy it without having to put up with dumb decisions made because of love, I really don't like that, maybe is because im Aro but anyways, no romance, good plot, amazing storytelling.

I should also talk about how we collectively, once you are actually reading the novel, become sadic's, is character development dont worry about it you'll be okay, yes you might enjoy seeing Cale get hurt but don't worryyyy is nothiiing.

Wow, I wrote a lot I'm so sorry but I could talk for hours about more lore, is just so good, 10/10 would recommend, but if you don't like blood please don't! there are actually some chapters where they torture people (Venion cof- Clopeh cof-)

Thanks for coming to my ted talk (I'm so sorry this is so long omg im crying)

I forgot to add! you migth at first not understand why some stuff is said, but we have to remenber that Cale only read until volume 4, which is when Clopeh appears so dont complain about him knowing stuff cause that ends so fast so dont worry he wont be only using novel memories and belive me Cale has his reasons of why he remenbers everything perfectly, That's it Thanks!!!! <<less

This novel is my WOS. I’ve been with this novel since middle school and still counting. It’s a typical iseaki story but the story building the author builds through chapters is really great. The foreshadowing from earlier chapters too shows how the author truly thought hard for the readers.
