T*ash of the Count’s Family

When I opened my eyes, I was inside a novel.

[The Birth of a Hero].

[The Birth of a Hero] was a novel focused on the adventures of the main character, Choi Han, a high school boy who was transported to a different dimension from Earth, along with the birth of the numerous heroes of the continent.

I became a part of that novel as the tr*sh of the Count’s family, the family that oversaw the territory where the first village that Choi Han visits is located.

The problem is that Choi Han becomes twisted after that village, and everyone in it, is destroyed by assassins.

The bigger problem is the fact that this s*upid tr*sh who I’ve become doesn’t know about what happened in the village and messes with Choi Han, only to get beaten to a pulp.

“…This is going to be a headache.”

I feel like something serious has happened to me.

But it was worth trying to make this my new life.

This is so good.

Tl;dr: I love this book and the author so much.

I kid you not... I have lost track of how many times I have re-read this from start to finish. It became a tradition ever since the start of 2022. This book is so good and definitely is a comfort novel. It’s a book that I’ll never get tired of and will continue to be amazed each time I read it once more. Everything, from the characters, the world, the interaction with the environment and even the villains,... more>> they’re all amazing and so well written and I can’t help but want more and more. It never gets old and I never get tired of reading it all. Yoo Ryeo Han is an incredible author and AAA I just love it all! <<less

Before I read it, I heard a lot of good things about tr*sh of the Count's Family. I can vaguely remember that it was said to be part of the holy trinity of Korean action fantasy web novels alongside ORV and one other that I can't remember exactly (either SSS-Class su*cide Hunter or The S Classes I Raised). I don't know if there actually exists a holy trinity as such, but the point is that TCF is held in high regard.

Now that I've read it, honestly, I don't know how... more>> this novel has a 4.5/5 rating. It's really overrated. I mean, it's pretty decent sure, but it's nowhere near that good. I would say this deserves more of like, a 4.2/5 or maybe 4.3/5 if I'm really generous, but NU doesn't let you put decimal ratings. I would never compare this to ORV, ORV is a masterpiece while TCF is just good.

I liked the characters a lot. Cale Henituse is a likable protagonist, and it's entertaining to see him interact with all of the other characters which is a good thing. There is definitely a noticeable lack of character development. Nobody really seems to change very much long term. The only characters I can think of that change perceptibly are Alberu and Eruhaben. The rest stay the same for the entirety of part 1, more or less. This is a tolerable flaw since none of the characters are initially unlikable, but it's still a flaw.

I find the idea of a weaker MC somewhat refreshing even if it has been done before. I know it's not for everyone, but so many other novels have their MCs be action heroes that surpass everybody else and it's nice to see something different every now and then. Cale being forced to sacrifice himself is something I like, but I think it happens so often that it gets a little old. As for the other characters, it doesn't feel like they grow stronger at all. Similar to character development, power progression is practically imperceptible. We don't have a benchmark to measure a character's strength. The only time a character grows visibly stronger is when they obtain a new power, such as a new ancient power or a different ability. Otherwise, it might as well not happen. Even at the end of part 1, I can hardly tell you how much stronger Choi Han is than when he started besides the new ability he gains.
Spoiler

For example, the necromancer Mary is said to grow stronger in the novel, but never performs any feats of strength that would impress upon the reader that she has really grown. This is the same for Ron, Beacrox, Choi Han, Raon Miru, Toonka, Witira, Archie, On, Hong, Hannah, literally everybody besides Rosalyn and Lock. Only those two display growths in strength that don't come from obtaining some new power like Choi Han's inherited black yong or a new ancient power.

[collapse]

The antagonist of part 1 is a spoiler so, unless you want to hear about it, don't spoil yourself.
Spoiler

The White Star is a creative antagonist. The idea of a man willingly embracing a curse of reincarnation in order to gain power and ascend to godhood is novel. He's also really intimidating in the beginning. TCF does a good job of showing off the power of the White Star the first time he appears. He overpowers everyone including Choi Han and the ancient dragon Eruhaben all at once. However, over time he just becomes way less of a threat since he loses almost every time. It almost seems like he gets weaker, even as he canonically grows stronger. In the end of part 1, as the White Star becomes complete, Cale still 1v1s him and and wins, TWICE. The White Star literally gets nerfed.

[collapse]

I really feel like this story could have just ended with part 1. Part 2 is pretty unnecessary and kind of feels like when the MC of a cultivation novel ascends to a new realm and just does it all again or when the MC of a shounen manga defeats an enemy that they've been fighting for a long time and it gets revealed that that enemy was part of some unknown organization and they were actually one of the weaker members. If part 1 just didn't bother introducing some of the new stuff to tie into part 2 and finished up the last of its plot threads, it would have been a perfectly acceptable ending.
Spoiler

All that stuff about hunters and single-lifers could have been left out of the novel entirely. There wasn't really a reason to introduce those new concepts. The story could've been self-contained and ended with the defeat of the White Star. It didn't need to be a story about Gods and Demons.

[collapse]

Overall, I'd still recommend the story even though it has problems. It's still a fun, pretty light hearted novel to skim over the course of 3 days and immediately forget all the details.

Edit: It looks like there may be a little misunderstanding in the above review about what I was referring to when I talked about "character development". Well, who knows, maybe they weren't talking about me? Anyways, I stated that "nobody really seems to change much long term". This is talking specifically about long term character development. You see, there are generally two types of character development. By far, the most common type is the short term development. This is the kind seen mostly in this novel. What I'm talking about is the change that happens in a character over the course of one or maybe two arcs that focus on that character. This change happens rapidly, and, if the character in question is a recurring character, they never really change again even after hundreds of chapters. A prime example is Raon Miru. Raon changes very rapidly in the arc following his rescue, and then is set in stone from chapters 200 to the end of part 1. The same thing for the cats On and Hong. This is... fine, but it's a lesser form compared to long term character development.

Long term character development happens over the course of hundreds of chapters, very gradually. It is fairly uncommon. That being said, long term character development does still happen even if it's a bit rare in this novel. As I said before, Alberu and Eruhaben undergo long term character development. I totally forgot about the half-blood, and yes, he does develop too. If you really want to stretch it, you can say Ron and Beacrox do too barely, but that's going too far for me.

However, it is simply untrue that Hannah develops as a character. She's the same person the entire novel, even during the portion that focused on her. Her personality does not change. Her allegiance does, sure, but this does not come due to any growth or change in character traits. She joins Cale because of external factors. It is not as if she decided to join Cale, she was forced to. There's no development here, don't conflate external change with internal change. If you changed your job, that does not mean you changed your personality. It could just mean that you needed a new job.

The same can be said of Cale Henituse, the main character. He doesn't change throughout the entirety of part 1. The following will have spoilers about the past of the main character.
Spoiler

You cannot say in good faith that Cale Henituse develops as a person. At least, not throughout the story. He behaves exactly the same at chapter 750 as in chapter 150. I know the novel has an entire arc where he goes into an alternate dimension and "overcomes his trauma" and saves all the people that died. But, seriously, ask yourself this: Did any of that even matter? The novel can say Cale overcame his trauma, but what really changed about him? He acts the same, thinks the same... he IS the same. If Cale, for instance, stopped sacrificing himself after resolving his trauma or changed anything about the way he acted, we could say that short term character development happened. A big part of this problem is the way Cale is written. He's too stoic. He's like the epitome of the toxic masculine "men are supposed to show no emotion" notion. There is only one instance in the entire novel when Cale shows any emotion besides anger or annoyance, and that's when he wakes from the God of Death's dream with Lee Soo Hyuk. He cries. I thought that would have been such a good emotional moment, but the novel has to reinforce the fact that Cale is not actually sad, just that he's crying for some reason. Why bother? Why can't Cale be sad? Why can't he cry? In that scene, Rosalyn noted that it would've been normal to see Cale cry out of anger instead of sorrow. Why? Cale is human too, so he should be written like a human. And humans get sad, humans cry. Humans aren't cold, collected robots. This stoicism that Cale is afflicted with rejects any change that comes to him. Perhaps part 2 will open Cale up a little more and allow for some development, but I doubt it.

In addition, the original Cale Henituse (the one that inhabited the body before Kim Rok Soo took over) does indeed change from who he originally was, sure. But that doesn't count. We don't see any of it happen, we just get to see the starting point and the end. Imagine if a character in a novel is shown in the beginning, and then once again in the end and that character has changed a lot by then. We could say that they went through a lot of character development, but since we haven't seen ANY of it, it doesn't matter at all and therefore counts for nothing.

[collapse]

Was this addendum necessary? Probably not, but I feel that information should be clarified when possible and I felt like doing this and no one stopped me. <<less

This was my first web novel, and oh boy did that rabbit hole run deep.

I've always loved books and manhwa/manga/manhua became fun for me 3 or 4 years ago since writing this. Then I saw the first chapters of the manhwa of TCF and wanted to know more of the story, and as you can see I have no regrets. This novel kept me cooped up indoors for weeks/months in complete bliss. Hating going to work, gatherings or whatever that would take me away, and I would sneakely read a... more>> bit every now and then on my phone whenever I was actually out. After a long while, I started to look at other web novels, but that's another abyss I fell in for another time.

My point is, if you are new or a veteren when it comes to novels, this novel will most likely devoure your time and you'll love every secend of it. Of course, not everyone will love it as much and that's fine. We all have different perspective and opinions of how we want a story to go. If you do want to give this a try though, get past maybe 100 chapters. This is one of those stories that get's better the further down the rabbit hole you go. <<less

This novel is the best so I don't understand why some people are complaining about it.

Can't they understand that their all perfect the way they are? Their flaws are also their strength.

I probably sound crazy right now but TCF is the best novel I have ever read.

... more>> It's easy to understand, there's lots of nice characters, a lot of scamming, money, destruction, arson and most of all, there's the main character Cale nim.

Cale nim who gave these people their home when their previous was destroyed.

He's not a saint but he's also not a cold hearted monster who just kill without any reason and says 'the world is unfair woo hoo hoo so I'm killing you'.

Cale knows that the world is unfair but still strives to make sure that his family won't ever experience indignity.

He's not a goody two shoes except for the time when he's scamming Litana..

There's no romance so we can let our imagination go wild pairing Cale nim with characters (although ships including the children are a huge no) be it straight or bend circle.

The female characters are also badass, their not weak and fragile like other stories make them to be. Their very greedy and protects what's dear to them. <<less

I can not disagree with the fact most of the time this was boring but I rest assure you that many interesting scenes made me want to rip my soul out of excitement.

I just wanted to tell for those who read the bad reviews to ignore it and try reading it! So far I'm in the chapter 286 and it's soooo good! This was my first time to stay in a novel that had so many chapters it's very interesting and I really like the main character, I also like... more>> the fact that it has literally ZERO romance that is pointed to the MC, and there's no harem or anything which made me really love it! <<less

Some reviewer already mention this but tr*sh of the count family has both factor that make people love korean novel and factor that make people don't want to read kr novel.

Things that are great:

+ unique storyline (the first time it was translated at least), lots of cute characters that has strong bond with MC, no harem, no forced comedy or romance

... more>> Things are not so great:

- while there are lots of side character that appear often, most of them are only relevant on their story arc. After that they will only exist as 'sasuga mc' army and give reaction to event. There's almost close to none scene where the side characters shine, since all the important moments are given to the MC. If there's any, it's because the MC literally gave them the opportunity to do so.

- there is no tension at all. We all know it doesn't matter how crazy stuff are, the MC will always safe the day. There's a crazy power scaling, and the other chatacter ended up being redundant compared to MC deus ex machina.

- have I mentioned deus ex machina?

- all in all, it feels like the author already have plans for several hundreds early chapters, but have none for the rest and just develop things as the story went on.

All complains aside, it's pretty solid. I totally understand the high rating. It's one of the first popular translated kr novel. <<less

This is good, addicting. The characters have their own personalities but I think many would still not like it because the MC is weak. This kind of MC isn't also my type but because the story is good, I continue reading it.

Highly recommended ☺

I am a type of reader who gets bored easily so when I kept going back to this novel, I was really surprised.
    • Kim Rok Soo
Spoiler

Kim Rok Soo is forcefully transmigrated into a character from a book he hasn't finished, Cale Henituse.

Cale Henituse is known as a tr*sh by everyone and he immediately uses this to his advantage.

He is initially cold and cared mostly about his survival but as he meets characters and the story progresses, he slowly becomes warmer and thinks more about his friends and family.

He may seem selfish and cold but his actions says otherwise. He says he's tr*sh (not because he's Cale but because of his past as Kim Rok Soo) but acts in defense of his friends and family if threatened or harmed.

There is a huge plot twist about his backstory, the reason why he is really calm after transmigrating and how he quickly overcomes his enemies with his strategies.

He comes from an apocalyptic world in Korea. One day, the world suddenly gains monsters and unexpectedly, humans suddenly gains abilities to defeat said monsters.

Kim Rok Soo has an ability to remember everything he sees and reads. And also has an ability to defeat enemies in an instant but both abilities have a backlash.

He wants to be a slacker after a promise he made to his friends.

    • Original Cale Henituse

Originally a cannon fodder, it was revealed that he made a deal with a god and is the reason why Kim Rok Soo took over his body.

He is now in Kim Rok Soo's body.

[collapse]

    • Choi Han
Spoiler

Is the original protagonist from The Birth of a Hero. He was transmigrated into another world and wants revenge after a secret organization kills the people who saved him. He originally hates Cale Henituse but because Kim Rok Soo is different from Cale, he becomes a loyal friend and ally instead.

There is also a huge plot twist about his origins and role in the story.

He is related to Kim Rok Soo's dead team mate and friend and is also related to the author who created The Birth of a Hero.

He finds out about Cale's real identity.

[collapse]

    • Raon Miru
Spoiler

A black baby dragon who was tortured by a minor villain in the novel. He was originally killed by Choi Han as a form of mercy but was saved by Cale simply because Cale wants to help him and destroy the minor villain.

He is really OP but can be quite naive about the world because he was imprisoned most of his life but knows when someone is kind or not. He wants to live peacefully with his human and family.

He is the son of a dragon lord but after a series of events, was sold to Venion.

[collapse]

    • Alberu/Alver
Spoiler

The crown prince of the Roan Kingdom. He is secretly a dark elf, a being that is hated by humans because of their abilities that is related to dead mana.

His goal is to become a king and have the dark elves become accepted by the people.

His personality is similar to Kim Rok Soo/Cale Henituse's. They initially are simple business partners but once Cale found out about his identity and other secrets, Alberu becomes close to him and treats him like a brother.

He also finds out about Cale's real identity.

[collapse]

    • Cale's friends and family
Spoiler

Originally, most of the characters are either dead or will die but because of the God of Death and the Original Cale Henituse, Kim Rok Soo was transmigrated and saves them from their fates.

[collapse]

    • Cale's enemies
Spoiler

A secret organization formed by the antagonist who wants to become a god.

They are connected to a mysterious sealed god.

[collapse]

    • Plot
Spoiler

It may seem slow at first but this novel is actually fast paced. There are a lot of schemes and fights against the antagonist and Cale is incredibly busy because of it.

It may also seem as if the story is simple but in the end, everything is connected and everything has a reason.

[collapse]

I advise new readers to read more before forming an opinion. There's a lot of plot twists and hidden back stories. Again, everything is connected and has a reason.

I am writing this because it will end soon. Firstly, forgive me for my bad English. I hope whoever read my comment can understand.

I first read this as a manhwa and I cant stop my curiousity for the next chapter which is I search for the novel. Luck with me, I found it on novelupdate. Thanks transalators!

I'm rating this as 5 star because I really like it and satisfy with the plot and characters (either good or bad ones). And the thing I like most no harem, not that I... more>> dont read harem, but some full with annoying women and MC that cannot reject them because think he is gentleman or whatever.
    • Spoiler

at first, in few earlier chapters, I thought MC just transmigrate from normal world but no. There are appocalypse in mc's old world. This is for new readers who just want to start reading novel/manhwa

I encountered it on September 2020, and it was to me like the light in the middle of darkness. I was incredibly bored of otome isekai stories, and was delighted to find a Korean reincarnation manhwa that wasn't romance and had a male protagonist. I enjoyed the story so much but the chapters tend to drag on so after a hundred chapters, reading it becomes a chore. I do remember stopping a few times, needing a break, but not wanting to drop it because of how dear it had been... more>> to me.

It's a light-hearted story based on a typical premise. Man gets reincarnated as a rich nobleman with a bad fate so he wishes to avoid it and lead a long and peaceful life by the countryside or become rich. It's simplistic and common premise, especially in the korean isekai circle.

As the novel's protagonist, Kim Rok Soo, now Cale Henituse, inevitably acts and gains the reputation of a hero and a savior all the while arguing claiming that his goal is being a slacker. Sure, Cale, sure. The characters act like NPCs in a game who spill out their pitiful life story with Cale always having to help them because he has the means to do so and because he's too compassionate for his own good.

It's wish-fulfillment fantasy, and I like that about it.

That said, the pattern does tend to get boring after a few chapters, especially after the Battle of Henituse. The troubles are never-ending and the same thing's going to happen anyways. Cale's going to win. I must admit, the story peaked for me when he became the commander. It's like everything else led up to this moment and I live for it. Go cough blood, save the continent and make us sad and proud at the same time, you self-sacrificing bastard! The White Star's a third-rate but effectively irritating villain. I don't even find him worth mentioning. For a guy who lived for so long, he sure is s*upid. The plans he made are easy to foil, yet they're never ending, akin to untangling coiled hair. He's like a c*ckroach. You squash him for how many times yet he remains alive with another plan set in motion. I personally don't like villains like him but his character traits are what makes him an effective villain that fits within TCF's story. The story reached peak mediocrity when it focused on the battle against the White Star. It transformed into a good vs evil fight without leaving any moral ambiguity for the villain. It's also a bit scary how the story demonizes bad guys, instead of looking at their human side. They only become good once they go to Cale's side. Hmm, is it just me or is there a weird balance here?

Sure there's still the power-ups, the same lovable cast and all the things I adore about it but the fight with the White Star didn't matter to me that much.

As for the side characters, they tend to get tossed aside when they aren't needed for missions and during their off time, they get little to no developments. There's a severe lack of character development in the emotional aspect. Their relationships with each other seem rather simple. There's way too many characters, with too little screen-time. They don't have their own story role, and they fail to leave a mark because the author kept on reusing the same old trope and character introduction pattern. They're all going to become Cale's allies anyways. It's very shonen-y in the aspect that during their screen time, they get a problem and a power-up. I also haven't seen any disagreements between the main Cale gang, and there's little to no moral dilemma in the story. Though it certainly doesn't lack characters that need Cale's help. I like the story, but I'm not blind to its flaws. I'd have to dumb myself down over the course of a few days before I can reread it. The writing is a bit of a problem for me with how short and brief the sentences are. It doesn't flow quite well when you read it, it's rather static. Especially when it's revealing important information. The fights are also difficult to read. The way the author mentions character names over and over instead of using pronouns irks me. Plus, some adjectives and descriptions tend to get repetitive. For example, benign smile, vicious, etc. But there is good reason why it is popular. The beginning was fun with all the world-building details like The Forest of Darkness, the Fog Cat Tribe, the transmigrator Choi Han, the secret assassin butler Ron, his equally vicious son Beacrox, the ancient powers. Not to mention, how weirdly satisfying it is to find out that xx is related to another person

I'm a sucker for found-family stories so this one was right up my alley. The misunderstandings surrounding Cale was cute to watch as well and his reactions to it. Cale's personality was also a breath of fresh air seeing as how he wants to live as a slacker and works hard now to achieve it. Yet it only gets further away from him; it's a running gag in the story. Another point is his self-sacrificing character and how he always coughs up blood, how worried everyone else is about him and how much he plays it down because he has the vitality of the heart. Cale has a hella thick plot armour. The world he lives in isn't that dangerous. For him, at least.
Spoiler
[collapse]
And just when you think he's going to die due to a secret power from his other world, Flicker, in typical TCF fashion, a farming dragon who became fond of him and is now considered his ally links his broken plate, effectively saving him.

My reader heart is happy, but the sad*st in me is shaking its head. So far, there'd been no deaths despite how intense the battles are. Why, you say? Why of course, plot armor! The author uses deus ex machina a lot in the guise of hidden information that is only revealed at the moment. Surprise! The story's tension comes from information that has been withheld. Weirdly enough, it's an effective strategy at keeping my attention. Not to mention, in the first place, the author revealed very little information, which helps it all fit nicely. What seems to be simple at first glance actually has a very complicated history behind it. Cale is also very dismissive of the clues he gets until it's right at his face which takes off the attention from the information he just read.

My advice to future readers is don't take anything at face value!

Yet all of these points are exactly why the story is so lovable to many of us. It's a simple read, yet the world-building gives it its own unique flair. The whole cast of unique characters with their own special powers continually add up to form an ever expanding Cale Protection Squad, with Raon and Choi Han being the leader.

It's biggest flaw is the lack of story themes, which is why the story lacks depth.

Overall, I think it's a good story that never quite reached its full potential because of how the story dragged on owing to its lack of character development. It felt like Cale and the gang vs the same old villains except they have different powers so we have to use other characters and we get new powers and info about the big bad villain and his plans, yey. It's probably what people call a power-up fantasy, idk. <<less

This is a good series, but nothing really stands out as great to me. The reason it has such a high readership is because it's a story that appeals to both men and women. The story itself kinda above average. This is a scheming protagonist transmigrates into a villains body who proceeds to reform his villainous ways, becomes OP, and dreams about living a lazy life.

Honestly, I haven't been really interested in the story once. Everything is too simple for the protagonist. It's only around chapter 200 that he starts... more>> fighting enemies capable of challenging him at all.

The translation is about a 3/5 stars. There are glaring errors that don't get corrected until much later in the series telling you one thing, then gets a completely different translation 50 chapters later. I am convinced this is a translation error. This happens frequently. <<less

Good read, though stopped after feeling a little bored, but I'm going to continue it, one day.

A bit overrated maybe, but definitely recommended.

So the story follows a rather bland trend. The plot is just a rehash, a rinse and repeat of events, which solely lengthens the word count. Which means, numerous chapters follow a trend of repeating phrases/sentences from prior chapters where the MC shows little character growth.

On the other side, the side characters is where this story truly shines. Unfortunately, the author sucks at foreshadowing, so when a new arc starts, lengthen the novel, it appears to come out of nowhere. Honestly, at this point, why can't he end the White... more>> Star arc? I don't need to read over 1.5 million words just to get there.

Overall, with out spoilers, the main plot is a giant mess. Its as if the author gets random ideas and throws it into the main plot with out much care in incorporating it properly. Repeat this over a few 100k words, and you get a convoluted arching plot which involves gods potentially being first lifers, demons working with a immortal reincarnator and side characters suddenly gaining an overly epic backstory.

Rating: 3/5

  • Story is only good till he gains his wind attribute ancient power.

Amazing I love the MC and the dragon so much Raon is so cute I want to just pinch his cheeks. Though some don’t like the way the MC narrates what he doing or about to do, I like it and it shows just how far he’s thinking ahead for himself and his friends/ family. Even for the story being so long it doesn’t have bad speed everything’s done pretty well and not dragged while the story also flows nicely and not choppy with the new goals or plans changing.

Characters: 9/10

I love all characters, especially the main, they are all well written and not one dimensional. Although I think some lack certain aspects, that's why it's not a 10. I think some characters, like Lock, deserve more development.

Plot: 10/10

... more>> It may seem like cliche but it's not. I think the pace is not fast or slow, just right. And everything happens for a reason; everything is connected. I don't think there is plot holes? I've reread it many times and don't see one.

Worldbuilding: 9/10

The worldbuilding is great, one of the best I've seen even. It's just that I don't understand some things that's why it's not 10. Well aside from some confusing things, I can say it's almost perfect.

Writing: 8/10

Hmm... I personally like the writing style of the author. Though sometimes the settings made me confused, it's still good for me. And I love the sound effect, it adds charm to the story. I sometimes even make the sound while reading, hehe.

I love almost everything to this story, that's all I can say. To those hesitating to read this or have dropped this, please give this story a chance. <<less

Never thought a book can stay interesting for so long, I fully expected to drop it but I couldn't stop reading until I caught up with all there is, safe to say this is my favorite webnovel.

I was content with the story before it started dealing with Kim Roksoo's past on earth but after that it only became better and better, don't let the number of chapters discourage you from picking this up it's absolutely worth it.
