T*ash of the Count’s Family

When I opened my eyes, I was inside a novel.

[The Birth of a Hero].

[The Birth of a Hero] was a novel focused on the adventures of the main character, Choi Han, a high school boy who was transported to a different dimension from Earth, along with the birth of the numerous heroes of the continent.

I became a part of that novel as the tr*sh of the Count’s family, the family that oversaw the territory where the first village that Choi Han visits is located.

The problem is that Choi Han becomes twisted after that village, and everyone in it, is destroyed by assassins.

The bigger problem is the fact that this s*upid tr*sh who I’ve become doesn’t know about what happened in the village and messes with Choi Han, only to get beaten to a pulp.

“…This is going to be a headache.”

I feel like something serious has happened to me.

But it was worth trying to make this my new life.

It doesn't do anything too new or revolutionary, but somehow comes across as a bit unique. The MC keeps making excuses for his behavior, but in the end it seems like he doesn't know who he really is.

His view of himself becomes more rationalized and deluded as time goes on; yet, interestingly enough: everyone around him seems to understand at least one facet of his personality better than he does himself. His enemies remain confused... how do you understand the motives of someone who doesn't understand himself?

In the end, we're... more>> all confused and a show of confidence is just that: a show. Kim Rok Soo is written like a real human being: flawed rationality, self delusions, unjustified confidence, and gradually building rage at the injustices visited upon 'his people'... The story may not be the most original, but if you dig deeply enough... you'll find yourself lost, only to realize you've finally opened your eyes.

So yeah: 5 stars <<less

Don't be mislead by the title and associate it with any xianxia novels (Well that was my own experience at first)

Well after reading the novel I was easily hooked up with it and could say that the novel is a decent fantasy action novel. It has a good pacing of the story and the MC was quite likable too

An awesome story with great worldbuilding.

There is a bunch of worldbuilding explanations throughout, and everything mentioned has been relevant to the plot (even if the payoff isn't until many, many chapters later).

The relationships between the characters are charming, and I keep looking forward to what they will do next.

Fair warning though, this is a long story with a lot of details to keep track of. There are slower parts that focus a lot on information gathering, but when the action picks up, it tends to escalate quickly.

This is a really great novel despite some flaws that other people mentioned in the reviews.

Most plot points in the story are connected and quite a lot of details in early chapters foreshadow the future as well.

I love the way each character interacts with each other and develops throughout the whole story, their relationships and interactions are really fun and refreshing to read amidst all of the chaos happening.

The MC can be described as a chaotic and lawless good person. He often avoids killing but is merciless against enemies who... more>> try to hurt his family or the people he cherishes (or criminals who hurt innocent people in general). His thoughts and actions often contradict each other but it boils down to his past life which actually has a huge impact on his character and the overall plot.

Another thing that this novel utilizes really well is the misunderstandings (the reason for that might not be spoilers but i'll put spoilers just in case)

Spoiler

I could say that these aren't even really misunderstandings, but rather a way to tell the difference between the MC's and other people's perception of him. He convinces himself that his actions are purely out of self-interest but it greatly benefits other people. Sure, he does it to achieve his dream of being a slacker but it actually makes the world a better place (but at the cost of him getting constantly injured due to his self-destructive behaviours).

It's definitely a decent novel. Decent enough that you should probably check it out if you aren't discouraged by its flaws, well, flaws that can be considered to be a result of a subjective opinion.

I'll confess I just do not know how to not talk about bad points of a novel. I feel like I tend to focus on them more than I do on a novel's good points. But here it goes.

Protagonist has personality which can work for some people, and for some people it might not. He is... more>> what I'd call an 'unintended tsundere', 'unintended' part hinges on the assumption that despite being extremely intelligent he stays ignorant of some of the more common matters. But if he is selectively blind, and I just didn't understand it, well, just go with 'tsundere'. He helps those around him while acting like he doesn't care. He protects those around him from harm but doesn't want to outright says that. Basically, a tsundere character.

He wants a peaceful life, while doing things that are contradictory to that goal. He remains blind of the fact that after he became something other than 'tr*sh', others' perception of him change and his idle life is further than ever.

And he can take this part of his character, the one that wants an easy life, too far sometimes. Contradictory to what I said above, I know, but it is what it is. Too much insistence in holding onto that part of his character just feels terrible to read really.

Also, the novel itself lacks a central goal, yes, protagonist wants an easy life, but that might not work for some people, yes, I'm some people.

Misunderstandings are not fun, just infuriating. Especially when done by side characters this novel has.

Side characters, at times, can be infuriating. They honestly worship Cale. And it's not a hyperbole. They really do worship him. Pretty similar to how characters of Overlord worship Ainz. But unlike how it is comedic in Overlord, it can be a bit infuriating in this novel. They do worship him, but this worship is the type that would keep him locked up in his room for his protection. Everyone has hysterical reactions whenever an incident has anything to do with Cale. They would rather shackle him to his bed and keep him like that than let him be free if that was possible.

And yes. There's not a whiff of romance in this novel. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. I find it a bit weird is all. It just feels like every character has taken a vow of celibacy. And a long novel like this without even a bit romance in any form or shape? Yeah, it can be a bit weird for some.

Tl;Dr: Protagonist is tsundere. Side characters are yandere. Concept of romance is foreign to this universe. But 5* reviews have already said why exactly you should read this novel, so if you aren't discouraged by what I said, go ahead and see for yourself why this novel is at the top here. <<less

I love this, I love the relationship of this story, I love the mindset of it, and it makes me want to be kind, make more friends, and enjoy life, overall I am not very good at writing reviews but this story makes me feel very optimistic.

The plot is kinda sad but the MC and everyone is trying very hard to fix it, their personalities and the way MC slowly gets affection and is loved by everyone in that world make me feel warm. The plot is fun too, with... more>> many interesting theories and mysteries and a lot of hypotheses but maybe you need to read more than 150+ to really know a bit about what happened to that world.

I still enjoy it so far and I hope you can enjoy it too, reading is all about enjoying things and make yourself happy, right? <<less

This is a solid novel, great translation work and story. Overall 4 stars, not great but good enough.

What is missing?

  • The characters don't feel alive.
    • The world feels like it revolves around the MC (Cale)
    • Any movement from others feels limited
    • Example
Spoiler

These are moments where a character supposedly goes out to do something on their own. Achieving next to nothing, and at most getting stronger.

  1. Cale's Father stating that he will perform an action, it which it turns out to be either useless or a complete non-factor. Like: looking into the crown prince's background, the war with the North, (Cale states his talents in leading a battle. But as far as it seems, the majority of the battle was fought outside the walls with major players being Cale and his friends.) dealing with the hunters (no news of this so far).
  2. Rosalyn, whenever she goes off, just comes back stronger. Who knows maybe in the upcoming chapters she will make some sort of major discovery in the Magic Tower. It hasn't happened yet.
  3. When Cale returned from Xiaolen The different kingdoms/empire were in tension for resources. Which made the world feel alive for a second. Things are happening when Cale isn't there. Then Cale solves it all, within 5 chapters before moving on. There is no consequence from the tension everything just goes back to where it was.
    [collapse]
  • Character development for others is slow
    • On and Hong are practically the same despite have the highest room for growth
    • Ron and Beacrox sees some development with the introduction of the East, not much else is shown from them.
    • Choi Han had the most character development alongside Cale, and that would be pretty much it
    • Rosalyn is pretty much the same.
What is done well?

  • The novel shows evidence of being thought out and planned. Seemingly simple lines in the story turn to have a substantial impact later in the story.
  • The Character development for the MC Cale harmonizes well with the First Person perspective of the story. We see the mental maturity, changes in mindset, and contradictions with action and thought.
  • The story has a simplistic approach to world building which is sufficient for this and most novels. Not too complicated, but enough to make sense.
  • Enjoyable to read and great to use as escapism.
Worrisome points

  • The introduction of popular tropes.
  • Spoiler
    • Murim
    • Video game elements (The Tablet from the Blood Sect Leader)
    • Potential for MC to become a God (Tired of this trope tbh)

Amazing novel tbh!

I've been reading it for quite a long period of time and honestly? I love it🫡

Pacing at the beginning of the novel is a little bit slow, but after reaching around the early 200's of V1, everything only gets better from there. The relationships between characters are so heartwarming and Cale's self destructive character traits make me wanna bash my head in!😊

Anyhow, highly recommend this if you like calculative MC's, great antagonists, and silly little scenes between the cast😋

Easily one of my favorite novels I've found on Novelupdates. I feel like there's a fairly compelling story which only gets better compared to the beginning, characters who feel unique in personality and motivation, and worldbuilding that the author clearly put great effort into.

On top of that, it's not just yet another goddamn story where romance is unnecessarily shoehorned into the plot. Platonic and familial relationships are deeply important, and as somebody with no interest in romance in neither my personal life nor the media I consume, I couldn't be... more>> happier with that.

Just being straight, if you don't think that a story can be compelling or accurate without romance, then just walk away right now. But if the story seems intriguing, give it a try. <<less

I love it. Maybe you'll find it boring at first. So just enjoy it. For some reader that like a quick pace, read manhwa first. Because, I was like that. I read manhwa first, then I find it so good. So I read the novel. At 200+ I feel like it's too slow. But I read it until ch 430+ before I stop. Then I re read from the first chapter again until the newest chapter update. I find it soo gooood, sometimes funny, dinamis, but sometimes boring because the... more>> author build it slowly. Sometimes author describe an event like a poetry, and too long and too much. So I must read it slowly to digest it.

What I like about this novel is... No romance, yeah!. I like friendship, bromance, familial love, sympathy etc in this novel but no to romance, so cale, please be single for the entire of this novel. <<less

I highly recommend this novel. It has a bit of everything. The main character Cale is very realistically written. He is both selfish and selfless at the same time.

The comedy in the novel is also gold Chef kiss.

The characters in Part 1 are well written. Unlike what the other reviews say character development does happen. However it’s limited to recurring characters like Eruhaben and Cale.

Eg ||Eruhaben initially had accepted death and was even willing to the die of old age. However by the end of Part 1 his will to... more>> live returned and after using a special item which fulfills you deepest wish is no longer in danger of dying||

||Cale overcomes his trauma related to the death of his previous family. Even saves them in parallel universe and finally opens up and comes to accept his new family||

||About character development again, there are a lot of characters who have gone through ‘trauma’. And Cale helps them overcome their trauma. Raon the dragon goes from an imprisoned tortured dragon to a happy carefree child. Those who say there hasn’t been any character development haven’t even read the novel properly||

||Even the side villian characters have development. The half blood dragon and sword master Hannah go from being villains who were betrayed and abandoned by the white star to Characters who reform and become even more powerful.

Hannah reunites with her brother and The Half blood dragon relinquishes his desire for revenge and becomes a powerful bone dragon||

||If you’re into a found family troupe and comedic unreliable narrator then this novel is very good. The fact is that it maintains its standard of quality throughout the novel||

||In part 2 the main arc of the story moves onto the Murim world and becomes wuxia. The world building becomes way more descriptive in the second part. If the first part left a lot to your imagination then the second part in the murim world is like explaining all the processes of the world. It’s also embraced the change of genre very well. The Murim arc actually feels like a ‘murim novel’ with very deep world building. There are quite a lot of good characters as well. Though many of them are inspired or are a mix of characters from Part 1 Eg There is character called Brain Demon who is a mix of Billios and Clopeh. Then the emperor of the central plains has a similar personality to Lee Soo Hyuk||

If one reads properly there is quite a lot of character development. And the plot and conspiracies in this novel are also quite novel among web novels. The whole idea if there being ‘Hunter families’ in different worlds who manipulate events. The concept of ‘karma’ and needing to cross world and becomes gods. And the concept of having an organisation like Arm and villain like the white star who willingly takes on a curse in order to become powerful||

There is also the fact that unlike other isekai novels whose protagonist don’t seem to have had a past life and are unimpacted by it. Our protagonist Cale has a lot past life lore and he is indeed impacted by them.

We even meet the Org Cale in the story, he do by the way has undergone a lot of character development from when he first heard about. Agreeing to a transmigaration deal with GoD in order to unite with his reincarnated mother,

I can go on and on about how much character development there is in the novel.

Overall if you like reading web novels LCF is must read <<less

Those who expects and romance with this novel, well you can just move on to a different novel because this is as wholesome as you can get with all the cutie children and their adoptive "father".

But kidding aside, the start of the novel is a of typical transmigration novel but if you ever survive that part and you still follow the MC in his misadventures, you will definitely love the characters and their storyline. The story doen't revolve around politics despite them being nobles and it plays minor part in... more>> the background. MC utilized it if it needs be for his own plot but never to gain any position for himself. He just dont want to be involve so he could a have a very peaceful life
Spoiler

that he was unable to achieve just yet even after the end of book 1 lol he became more busy than he wants to be

[collapse]

And if you also survive past the 300 and 600 chapter, you will discover there is more to it than just a transmigration novel I guess? There's a lot more plot and twist in the story that you will surely get hooked with and enjoy. <<less

I have read the whole volume 1 and honestly the story is too good. I am not the one to write reviews but felt the need to do so because some people just keep calling this story boring and whatnot, I am not criticizing them or anything, since everyone has their opinion.

BUT This story is not boring at all. The plot keeps getting better and better. Some people said that the MC was boring but actually he is NOT. The MC Cale wants to live a slacker life but problems... more>> keep coming and coming.

Each and every character in this story is amazing, it has excellent woman representation where they are NOT made love interest but actually have a character and their own self. They are not made to fall in love with the MC.

The MC is not exactly OP and edgy, he uses his brain for things which makes his character even more interesting. And in his tasks, his friends help them too. And the part I love is that every character have their own story and it gives them depth so they don't feel shallow and boring and unnecessary.

And Lastly the translation is also great. And can be understood easily. Thank you Translators.

Lastly I would like to say People should read this excellent novel. <<less

Absolutely fantastic story. Starts a bit slow and has a lot of set-up, but it really pays off. Amazing fights. The politics are decently intricate, and the protagonist is a fascinating character. He's also an unreliable narrator, so you have to infer some things, but it only adds to the story. The character relationships are first class, and there are several important characters who get really good character growth. The magic system is very well developed, and the final villain is intimidating and genuinely feels difficult to defeat. There's a... more>> fair bit of comedy as well. I'd highly recommend it. <<less

This novel is really just the same old thing over and over for hundreds of chapters. You have an OP MC with a stacked cast of unmemorable talent (except for the dragon and prince) who are all ready to fight to death for him. Fight, awards, everyone loves him is solely the three things happening in this story (and in that order). Rinse, repeat.

If I were to very slowly read this, I think I could enjoy it and catch up eventually without ever feeling like I was forcing myself. However, if you read more than like 10 chapters a day you do realize it's literally the same plot in every arc. I'm going to revert back to sticking with just the manwha so I can just see this once a week in pictures.

But still, if you are into shounen/seinen and like this genre of transmitigation OP leveling, you will fall in love with this story. TOCF is a staple web novel of this genre. If you fall under this umbrella, my advice is that you just read slowly and savor it. I couldn't. But I am not very attached to this genre so I will declare my defeat after almost 300 chapters.

This is going to be my first review here, haha!

Anyway, I really enjoy reading this novel! Must admit, the first chapters are a bit slow, but as I progress, things gets heated up. The development of each character are very good and heart touching... Though there are some character that I wish would have more screen time (ehemLockehem), but it doesn't mean it puts the score down since I realise that this novel puts every background information after quite some chapters (e.g. is MC's past and the reason he's acting... more>> as so).

This novel has a light atmosphere to it despite having a lot of foreshadowing that makes you think twice, still light imo. Great for those who wants to read in their free time.

Do give it a try. Make sure to hold on for a bit since as I said, the first few chapters are pretty slow, but if you do, it's worth it. <<less

THIS NOVEL is AMAZING.

When I start this wn I dont have high exceptation because of title but;

Unlike the title the consept is so good (fast and smooth). In the beginer chapters soft and a bit slow (if you compere last chapters).

Plots are good and when MC proceed new plot you can't find any odds.

If you ask if it has any bad points I think outhor can't use some characters in final chapters (maybe because the plot proceed too fast)

I really enjoy this type of novel where it revolves around family and friends instead of love interests. The plot is interesting and really hook you up the more you read it, the MC is intelligent and kind (I know a lot of people prefer cold-hearted MC but Cale is the calm and collected MC that makes the best choice for his people so I prefer him than other MC who only knows killing as the only option) Im a sucker for suicidal MC to be honest.

The characters all have... more>> character development moments and the children are so cute and loving that you just want to protect the family forever. Though its true that the story drags on but because there are so many hidden details, the pace is not too rushed or prolonged but it just makes it more interesting. The readers at some point would realize there are details that they have missed and then be in awe at how these little pieces affect the plot. A 5 star because this novel is enjoyable to me and it makes me laugh as well as cry at the same time. <<less
