Oih! It's nice. Balanced angst and comfort. It really was a bit depressing when a certain arc came but the sweet that comes after is worth it. It's a nice read with reasonable main characters and smart to boot.

Arguably, my most hated trope is ' on different sides' or ' our parents did each other wrong so we must not be close', but this was on the light side so I didn't mind. They're father's story is really sad though.

The extra was a surprise though!

If Tamora Pierce wrote a transmigration danmei novel...

I've seen other reviews saying this novel is predictable and tropey, but let's be honest how many danmei out there isn't trope-y? For me, im giving this novel 5 stars because it has heart, the characters feel genuine and multidimensional within the story context. Which makes sense because the setting *is* a basic cdrama storyline, but the MC character's experience of it reveals more depth and the humanity of people he formerly considered 2d characters. I saw another review saying the relationship between... more>> the MC and ML is boring because the bantering stops once they fall in love, but they do continue bantering - just in a loving way. The MC is a bit of a tsundere, though most of that is him posturing to come off as evil. I find tsundere characters tiresome when outrage and anger is *all* they express but he expresses many different emotions that make him feel more genuine and realistic. The ML is also characterized as a kind and dashing young hero type, and he is a bit like that but he also exhibits an occasional pettiness that I love to see in a character who's supposed to be so perfect. The author builds off the character archetypes set forth by the script and then gives each character much more dimension - in essence restoring the humanity in characters who were originally written for entertaining a TV audience. And the love stories the side characters end up in are so interesting that I wish each had a separate book as well!!!

I also found the writing style lovely and the dialogue snappy and in turns romantic. I read the translation by PurpLy and it made for smooth and engaging reading🙏 <<less

A simple but sweet read. There were multiple points where I wanted to stop reading, but in the end, I finished it! I'm at least glad that I did since the Happily Ever After was particularly sweet this time around~

CHARACTERS: 4/5

Although the characters are nothing groundbreaking, they at least have depth and charm! I think that certain side characters could have been explored more fully, but I understand that the main focus here is the main pair~

... more>> Su Yang (MC) :

A transmigrator that was switched with the character of the TV Show/Novel that he was playing. He's a young actor, not very experienced at all, which causes a lot of problems with the plot later. Even though he insists on following the plot for the longest time!

  • Minor Spoilers:
    Spoiler

His personality is pretty pure, which goes completely against his actual character setting. But, without a SYSTEM to guide him, he has free reign when it comes to messing with the plot. Unfortunately, he doesn't really take advantage of this LOL. Be warned, he's going to keep insisting on following the plot, futile as it is, for a LOONG while. It's one of the things that made me almost stop reading. Still, it works out in his favor in the end~

    [collapse]
Gu Feidi (ML) :

A very charming ML~ He's a white lotus type of character, surprisingly (or unsurprisingly, as we'll later find out). He starts to gain a little more depth the more troubles come his way though! At first, he assumes that the MC is interested in his body heh, but his intelligent enough to see that there's something wrong with this supposed "Evil Young Master" that keeps running into him.

  • Minor/Major Spoilers:
    Spoiler

He was the shou in the original novel, and I find this endlessly fascinating. LMFAO.

    [collapse]
SETTING: 3.5/5

I might have been spoiled by a worldbuilding-rich novel that I just finished reading, but I find that the cultivation setting here was a bit meh? It has its charms, but it confused me a lot too!

ROMANCE: 3.75/5

I think that the romance in this is cute! That's the best way to describe it~ It's not my favorite dynamic, hence the lower rating. But if you enjoy soft romance, with just a little bit of bitterness because of initially unrequited feelings, then you'll probably like this more than me.

PLOT: 3.75/5

The main plot is the MC trying (in vain) to keep the plot straight in hopes that it will lead him back home. Admittedly, even if it frustrated me a lot, this kept me interested for a while. After which, the story crawled for a bit, before secrets were finally unveiled. It's the kind of story where the past is highly relevant to the present!

RATING: 3.75/5

Although not a favorite, I do think that this novel is worth the read. I wouldn't mind reading it again in the future~ My take on it is that even if it's nothing too special, I still find myself liking the characters and the setting a lot.

RANDOM RATINGS:

  • Personal Enjoyment: 3.75/5 [I enjoyed the first half and the ending the most~]
  • Literary Level: 4/5 [From the translation, I can say that the author writes pretty well]
  • Angst: 3/5 [This has some angst scenes, but the tone is pretty neutral]

I don't like it. Su Yang (MC) was okay for the first 10 or so chapters until I realized he's bit dense. There are plot holes everywhere and the minunderstading does not make logical sense at all. It's very force, practically for the ML to notice MC.

Gu Feidi (ML) still does not feel like a main character (at the point of my reading). He is so plain, indistintive, not a single thing about him stand out except for the fact that I was told he is the MC, not to... more>> mention he is veryy illogical and inconsistence too. Beside I don't feel the chemistry at all between the lead, everything is just very forceful and everyone is so expectable and generic. The writing does not help, it throws the infos too literal on the reader's head.

One tiny things that I shouldn't really mention because it's very tiny and does not effect the plot, but I still do want to mention because it irks me is the part where MC insisted that he was just a small part in the original drama and the drama itself solely focus on the ML FL & Second Male Lead (which wasn't him) but then the drama literally is called Arch-Rivals. I know it's tiny but this kind of thing happen everywhere in this novel.

I haven't got to the romance part yet, I couldn't confirm if the romance is worth sticking through the entire plot hole, but I already feel nothing toward the ML so I really doubt. <<less

It has so many good things and so many unexpected moments. The story is so much better than my expectations! Sure the NU tags didn't tempt me to read it, but the summary does sound attractive and no Tragedy genre so a big relief there. And so finally I chose to read this! Finished in less than 24 hours with Happiness~!

The story is Truly Great with Satisfying Ending. Sooo Happy!

It surprisingly has so many Emotional moments between MC and ML. ... more>>
Spoiler

I think this might be the first time I read where Gong ML cried so much for MC. The fear of him getting hurt... The fear of losing him.

Yes, ML the one who cried so much in this novel. But ML is NOT Crybaby!!!

[collapse]

Also, this is some kind of rare Action Novel where NO ONE IS OP ! ! ! No one is truly weak and no one is Truly So Strong or even OP! Well, the Last True Villain was rather Very Strong, but well, you can guess his end.

This Novel is Rare Piece of Gold. It deserve attention and deserve praises and compliment ! It deserve Good rating and deserve to be Recommended ! It may not be Perfect for some people, but to me it's Perfect the way it is !

I'm Absolutely Truly Loving it with all my Heart and Soul and Eternal Love for the Eternity and Beyond~!!! <<less

This story is slighty different from the norm transmigration line... the plot is entertaining enough, giving off some cliffhanger vibes. I choose the Purplely Translation since they have completed the translation compared to other translators. Summary is plot do contain slight angst, confusion but still lots sugary dog foods around. Worth reading if you are bored...😙😂😙😂😙

The comedy tag is well deserved but be ready to shed some tears in the later chapters.

I really like the MC. He is so pure and innocent. Generally, I don't like "dumb" MCs like him but I understand his character. I understand his perspective and I understand why he does what he does.

He is not a super intelligent, super proactive MC. In a sense he is a very normal person. In his real life, he didn't live a life of hardship and never learned to be ruthless or to adapt... more>> to situation. But he did his best in this new world. He might say that he saved the protagonist because he needs the protagonist healthy enough to kill MC. But this is just a lie he tells himself. He is genuinely a sweet, kind and hardworking person. Little offhand sweet comments to his servants, helping out others, saving lives etf. He isn't someone who knows how to deceive or to be ruthless.

The author never explicitly said so but it was quiet clear that he was depressed. His suicidal tendencies got glazed over in the begining but he grew to accept himself and this new world. I like his character growth. When he finally realises no he doesn't wish to die, I felt so so happy for him.

I've seen multiple scathing reviews here denouncing the MC and I wish to say that please give this novel a chance. Its a good novel. Its rivals to lovers and many scenes in it really touched my heart. The relationship ship of the main couple is very sweet. They'll literally die for each other. This isn't a case of typical cold hearted gong x sweet shou stuff that is popular in Chinese BLs. Their relationship is very healthy. <<less

4.8/5 ☆ Cultivation. A great story with great characters! The MC transmigrates into the villain of a book who he acted as in a movie, and aims to absolutely stick to his character role so "he can go home"! He is such a cute character, and I never got bored of his adorable & funny antics even when the people around him already knew he's just a softie inside. The ML is very upright and righteous, but I love how he falls in love with our MC over the course... more>> of the novel!

They both contribute something to their relationship, which makes their bond have "substance" and even more special. They go through many experiences together and support each other even before they knew their own feelings and confessed.

I love how their feelings really developed over time (but you can already feel the sweetness and fluff from the start!), and how everything else was gradual. ++ENEMIES TO LOVERS TROPE IS SO CUTE AND THIS NOVEL PROTRAYED IT SO WELL T.T do yourself a favor and read this gem! It has action, romance and humor -- I loved it so much I finished it in a day and a half.

can't wait for the next updates~ <<less

Loved it!

Even though I only read upto chapter 12, the plot is really good so far and so does the MC. The interaction between MC and ML right now gave me enough hope so that I'm probably going to MTL it.

I loved this.

Starting from MC's adjustment from a modern world to a historical one was really realistic. Both characters are pure people, straying from the "shameless and super smart shou× manipulative and cold gong" troupe. Its a breath of fresh air and I can really feel that their love is genuine even from reading in an MTL version. It made me laugh and even shed a few tears in this novel.

However, theres that deus ex machina moment by the end of the novel that made me lose some points on this novel. Its mostly just my preference that I don't like having the "author" as a god in any novel.

I read it on chrysanthemumgarden because at this point I'll buy a membership.

It was a fun read, easy to follow with enough mix between fluff and angst.

I want to say the MC seem idiot but honestly, in his place, I'm not really sure I could do better.

... more>> I really like that almost all the plot are covered. There is a looooot of side couple, but it's a point of joke in the novel as MC really thinks the author is shameless (and he's kind of right).

The fight description are really fun. And some of the description of the MC in the "decor" feels like a painting (I could 100% see it in my mind). So I quite enjoy some of the time spent on describing the fixed scenery.

In short : I liked it and I'll probably read it again. <<less

i love their dynamic so much! Something I really enjoyed abt it was the pacing of the plot and their relationship like they only kiss around halfway in chapter 60 something. And as someone who struggles with reading 40 chapters I really liked it. I did unfortunately drop this at chapter 94 but I tend to drop books if I stop reading for a day or two 🥹 when they did establish their mutual feelings towards eo it did slow down alot, at least imo. I kinda just got bored... more>> and didn’t really care about the parent’s drama and stuff. Im still curious on what happens in the end though, does he transmigrate back or what?? IF ANYONE KNOWS PLEASE TELL ME. But yeah all in all, it was enjoyable, maybe a little cliche but thats okay, cute, and just entertaining!! <<less

I loved this novel. I was a bit confused towards the end. I don't know where I saw it, maybe the comments, but someone said Gu Feidi was going to go through a blackening so I thought Su Yang was going to die and come back and it was going to be a whole arc but it wasn't.

It would've been interesting to read if that did happen but it didn't and the novel was good either way.

I loved the MC and the relationship between the MC and ML. I liked... more>> the side characters. Before I knew how the original novel ended, I felt like the original Su Yang was quite pitiful. He was the most innocent and didn't have anyone who raised him with love. He was cursed by his mother to die at 20 which was why he acted the way he did.

Spoiler

Turns out he actually ended up with Gu Feidi in the original novel as well but with more ups and downs and dog blood.

The reason the MC didn't know this was because he hadn't read the novel that the series was based off and acted in as Su Yang.

I'm guessing because of how China prohibits BL. Well, at least obvious gay love in TV series/movies. In that, it was realistic as to why the MC never realized how the original novel ended.

The MC was likeable and relatable. Overall, the novel was great. <<less

I liked this novel a lot. It was two love stories in one, where the process of the current love helps to heal/correct a past love. Sorry for that lil bit of a spoiler but it's what made this novel more unique.

MC, Su Yang, and ML, Gu Feidi, are both easy to like and their interaction is sweet. ML's use of love words is endearing and you can feel that he loves MC more than his own life.

Spoiler

It is unknown why MC transmigrates but it is later revealed that MC transmigrated not into the film adaptation but the original novel. This leads to some cute interactions because the original novel was a BL genre but the film was adapted to BG due to censorship. MC was not aware of this since he had been too lazy to read the original novel.

So of course, MC makes wrong assumptions left and right and everywhere. While ML ends up falling in love with MC, MC is trying to find opportunities for ML and the film's heroine to get together. Later on ML confesses to MC and MC realizes that he does have feelings for ML.

They go through several life threatening events and becoming each other's support. In the end, they decide to leave the outside world and live in peace at the secluded House of Jade.

BIG SPOILER...

...

MC's original body's father, Su Huaizhu, and ML's father, Gu Ruohai, were lovers when they were young. Due to SH's poisoning, he had to leave GR. GR was not aware of the poisoning and thought he was abandoned. But GR still loved SH after 20 years had passed and SH as well still loved GR. MC's and ML's relationship was the catalyst that made GR seek out SH to find out the truth behind their breakup. In the end, MC and ML were able to help remove the poison from SH.

The twist in the story of the fathers was super bittersweet. I hated that they had to suffer all those years so was extremely satisfied when they were able to get back together again. 🥰

What I remembered most:

    • ML is righteous and pure and initially suspicious of MC but through MC's actions, he falls first
    • a lot of good xianxia tropes here: childhood friends that belong to opposing sects, solving riddles and finding a master at the cultivation equivalent of summer training camp, someone's dad is the demon lord, trapped in a cave and have to escape together
    • love a dense protag. Love him. He's the best. Su Yang is trying his best to be evil but he's just a baby and I think he deserves a harem of sexy protagonists ( )
    • the relationship between MC and ML set this apart from other books like "Villain Rehab Plan" and "Every Day the Protagonist Wants to Capture Me"
    • slow burn and childhood gay awakening PLUS still some juicy angst and conflict once they get together
    • the drama doesn't stop once feelings have been revealed, now they're a united front but their problems only continue! Which is so much more interesting imo than the main "conflict" after getting together being flat out miscommunication or misinterpreting signals
Why I liked this:

    • the carrd for this totally convinced me
    • dense MC supremacy ( )

    • great development of the individual characters AND their relationship together
    • nice balance of plot driving forward but also introspective moments and scenes that are purely to analyze and develop the characters
    • as usual, side characters don't get much time but who cares
    • is it tropey? YeS AND I LOVE IT

The story is kind of split into 4 arcs

1. MC accepting his transmigration and adapting to the world

2. MC understanding that the orginal plot is a goner and he can't stick with the original script that he knows of

... more>> 3. Angstyyyyyy and also some back story of the side characters

4. Problems more or less solved and its somewhat peaceful (HE)

At the start, I really didnt like the way our ML treated our MC. On the other hand, I can understand why seeing that they are from 2 different sides. But I really hated how the ML had so many misunderstandings about our MC all just because of rumours. Like he didnt try to get to know him better and treated him disrespectfully.

When they finally got together, everything was quite despite the angsty situation :") Our MC was also very cute trying his very best to stick to his character and get the plot moving in the right direction even though he is not an actor himself 😂 poor MC <<less

ML and MC relationship development was good that’s all going to say on this topic

My problem with the story is the MC has no backbone at first his characteristics was fun, but then things started falling apart. The fact that he can’t pull off a villainous character after transmigrated from acting in the real world an was seen through by the side characters that annoys me.

Then again, he is supposed to be the villain in the story, but not even acting as a villain he couldn’t do right. Then he... more>> complains about every unrighteous thing just become annoying after a while <<less

I give this novel a 5 stars for sure. I love this the main couple, side couple, and storyline. I couldn't resist to read the mtl (machine translation) version as it was not completely translated yet at that time and so I completely read the whole book and I didn't regret. Even though reading the mtl was confusing sometimes I still enjoy it. My favorite character is totally Xu YunZhan even though he doesn't really have much moments in the novel but I really like his character and my favorite... more>> couple that couldn't be together was Su Huaizhu and Qu Ruohai. I'm so glad that the misunderstanding from 20 years ago is resolved and they can finally live happily after 20 years. Even though they aren't together as lovers I really wish these two the best as friends.
