In her previous life, she treated her mother-in-law like her own mother, treated her husband with respect and affection, devoted herself to her stepson and stepdaughter, and looking back at herself, Guan Suyi had a clear conscience. But in the end, she was ruined, exiled, and died alone. When she was about to die, Guan Suyi summed up her tragedy with one phrase: doing too much and saying too little.

After rebirth, she decided to say nothing, put on the hypocritical face of a good wife and mother, strive for the reputation of a gentle and virtuous character, bury all the enemies in the pit, and ask them to be grateful and remember her as their benefactor for the rest of their lives.

The novel's title is Who cares, and Guan Suyi indeed resolves to sit in the sidelines just watch things unfold. Unfortunately, she keeps on getting dragged into one mess after the next, thus the initial resolve wore down naturally and things changed. Deep into the novel, it ended up as doing not enough and saying too much.

Finally in chp.147, she came to realize that she has been s*upid for a long while, as the saying Cleverness may overreach itself goes. Despite being dragged into a mess, she remained aloof, thinking to be above and beyond everything, so she ended up saying too much and attracting malice while refusing to take the step foward. She realizes that what she should have done is doing a lot, saying a lot, who cares, the ML prop her up when she falls. She decides to trust the ML's sincerity, give her heart to him, let go of the past and accept whatever may come in future. She took the final step to letting go of her haunting first life.

Character growth for the main characters always seem to be particularly difficult. It often seems too abrupt or too slow. Not here though, Guan Suyi stepped up beautifully, nevermind the ML who grows with his every appearance in the novel. I just find the

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A SIGN TO READ THIS NOVEL. Here it is!

Read this! Im very picky when it comes to choosing good novels, I read alot of books and this is good. I can say Ive read better but this is also a nice read.

DO NOT LISTEN TO THOSE WHO RATED LOW. I dont even know if we read the same novel. But 1 star really? Man. Some people don’t appreciate hard work.

And I really don’t get it why some people hated the FL. Lol. I like intelligent... more>> FL, I like reading long banter. Some may be put off but I appreciate ancient novels cause I like reading their cultures and knowledge back then.

I also like the ML. And Im really glad she got rid of her ex husband. Anyways, please rest assured that its 4.4 ratings is well deserved. Ignore those bunch of low ratings. <<less

This is a case of when a truly good writer uses his pen to bring life to a story. If you don't understand other cultures and don't have wide perspective of how life could be in different places and different ages and different stages, then this one is not for you. I was a little disappointed that I could not directly read the raw scripts, because I cannot read mandarin. There was a lot of beautiful words and meanings lost in the translation, which I can understand because some of... more>> these ideologies, meanings and phrases would be lost over time in history, and like the peasants in the story we need a simpler way of saying things to understand.

Disclaimer: The title and synopsis is not about how she chooses to live her life as a character, but about how she gives up on the aspirations and people from her past life to take a new path in this one. So if you are looking for a character which truly decides to adopt a passive way of life after betrayal this is not it.

I admit I have limited knowledge about Chinese ideologies like Confucianism, Legalism etc. I just knew that it was what guided life for people in their culture back then and still is pretty influential in today's society. It was really interesting to read how people discussed different types of ideologies and ethics and debated different theories and outcomes to see what was the right of way living, just like we do today. I am not big on philosophy or ethical debates, but it really set the mood of this story. It was not just a story of characters fighting in the back courtyard, fighting for power and killing each other. It really dived deep into how people really lived their lives. It is not hard to tell who is the evil and who is the good in this book, who was greedy and who was generous, but their struggles and debates to prove who is right, just complicates the lives of those in the past and brings them beyond a point of merely foolish scheming characters.

Guan Suyi putting ideas so eloquently into easily understandable words and teaching people generously really attracted me to her character. It is easy to make someone into a person like her boring, and some people, based on the comment, really do find her boring. But I have to blame that on their lack of knowledge of the topics discussed or finding the wrong piece of literature to feed their craving for revenge romance. The story really puts into perspective of her character, how she was raised and how she was taught, to let us better understand what kind of person she was and the choices she makes. And it is the same it when comes Hunnar (I prefer this name, it sounds more affectionate). Through the first half of the story, not only did I slowly grow to love the characters for who they are, I also grew to love the way they lived, full of ambition, striving to set things right.

They are not perfect, they all have their flaws, Hunnar is in fact an immoral being, going after someone else's wife, and Guan Suyi goes of the tangent and leads him on. But the writer truly made me love each and every one of their characters despite all their shortcomings, even their shortcomings, making them come to life. They each have their reasons for being how they are and it is not necessary for you to like them, but to call them despicable is still a stretch too far. Both Guan Suyi and Hunnar go through a lot of character development, even Zhao Lulu the toxic ex does. No one really fits into one character image, there is always traits that make us seem different and exceptions that make us act out of character, so while it may seem hypocritical, their emotions and are rather realistic when it contrast with the character they try to wear in front of others. Both in terms of writing and character development, this book is a ten.

Now for the downsides,

The plot is not excellent. There is no one particularly strong draw factor to this plot, or the gist of the story. I managed to stay hooked mostly because I had read the reviews before and I wanted to find how she ends up with Hunnar. The part on her literary conversations and debates and development of the country kind of stagnates a little, especially after she and Hunnar acknowledge each other as potential partners. I would have loved to see more of how policies and stuff were implemented, how Hunnar developed as an emperor even more. While we did see a bit of Hunnar learning, we only mainly see him taking Guan Suyi's teaching in completely and applying it the same way. There is no thought provoking moment, or times where he willingly learns from others.

Another thing I would like to point out is that the side characters are just side characters. There is no real 3D view of their lives, but I believe this could be the writing style the author adopted. To solely tell the story through the lives of our main couple.

I am not quite sure if neo-confucianism was exactly how it is presented here (I have limited knowledge), but it is true in the regard that it did affects the rights of women and their freedom in life to quite a large extent. It was a principle that rose to power in Northern Song Dynasty, and was continued to be followed strictly in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Yet it could be fair to say that it was a thing of the rich, and the peasants couldn't bother more about it while they were starving away.

I won't be reviewing the extras.

I definitely recommend anyone interested in this genre to try it out. Don't complain if you don't like the genre and this is not your cup of tea. It is still a great piece of literature. <<less

One of the best rebirth novels out there! I love Suyi and Hunnar even with all his shortcomings, he is by far one of the most realistic ML I have ever read. He is not omnipotent, he has his own fears and had made mistakes but he always tried to learn and better his mistakes. One of the best representations of a male lead in those times. It's a good, slightly different take on ancient China with a philosophical slant. The FL is quite an overpowered protagonist, which is due in part to her being reborn. Not only is she an academic, her travels and immersion in different environments have helped her obtain a few more special skills handy during times of need. There are tons of theory in practice scenarios her, which may feel incredible at time.

There is little to no slow down in the pacing of this story, it starts off in a brisk pace... more>> and continues throughout in more or less the same speed. I like how it doesn't dwell too much on her previous life and just gives enough glimpses throughout the story. It is heavy on Confucianism and discourse on various theories on governance, a lot of things went over my head but I was still able to grasp enough to understand what the opposing forces are trying to fight for. It didn't feel too long, just good enough for a few days' reading.

I haven't checked the raws for this one, so I'm not sure if it's the translation of the actual story that had a few plot gaps (

I loved FL, how much she stopped caring in her rebirth but still managed to turn things to her favor or let them see her reasoning. She's had a revelation and significant character development later in the story that turns her from passive defensive to savagely offensive. Apart from weird episodes that felt out of character, she is a solid character. On the other hand, it took me a while to warm up to ML, and I think a lot of readers would rightfully agree on this.

For a scheming, manipulative foreigner to take the helm of another country, having a capable army at his beck and call, it felt a little unbelievable for me how he easily and deeply he trusted and fell for other people's scheming. I really enjoyed this novel 💖💖💖.... Especially the Alternative part....

I don't know why there are so many negative comments on the ML. He was only a warrior before he became an Emperor. Half of his life he was on the field, so he is wary of all the emotions.... It had a good start, I was really digging the philosophical/political theme with the struggles of putting a country together and it had a reincarnation subplot... but then the romance killed all the plot development. It got boring, so so boring, the MC just deflated and the Emperor ML just wasn't my cup of tea.

The extras, I don't want to spoil but it was unnecessary...

The translation 10/10, really good!!

one of the best translated stories i've read here. A lot of drama and I love how strong the main character was. It was a second chance and she reflected about herself and her past life as a sort of learning experience. She wasn't overbearing or didn't dwell too much on past mistakes. She amended what she could and let go of things that she couldn't.

to be honest, when I read a certain part I had to look at finale to see who she ended up with because I hated... more>> for her to go back to square one and be trapped there. It was just a few chapters in but it hooked me to the point that I felt invested in how her life and relationship would be at the end. I enjoyed the process of seeing it all unravel afterwards. Although the ML is a bit of a dummy, he is a lovable dummy.

the long extra felt like another way of how this story could have been told. It was amazing to read. The author is a genius, to be honest, to think of such twists and turns. Reading this story felt like reading three different stories that came together as a whole and meld perfectly. I will probably read this again just to get that high again.",) <<less

This story is written so well. I can tell that the author has really done his homeworks. I learned a lot about the culture developments before, during, and after warring states period. The author uses a lot of idioms, also enriching my knowledges. It's not that I don't respect and proud of my own nation and cultures, but I feel different taste in learning cultures from other countries, especially Chinese culture. It's so fascinating, in my opinion.

Human development is extraordinary. Human thinking grows. Very rare, from just a webnovel, there... more>> are many lessons to be learned.

I highly recommend this novel. At least just by reading and contemplating the interactions between the characters in this story, there are moral values to be learned here.

Be as wise as snakes, but harmless as doves. Learn how to avoid making mistakes and to protect ourselves, but at the same time able to maintain empathy.

Confucianism said : repaying grievance with virtue, then why repay virtue? It can't be more right!

Compassion is the truth, but that doesn't mean we should allow ourselves to be crushed by the evil that exists inside human heart. Human relations and enforcement of laws, all both go hand in hand in the end. <<less

Some people dislike ML but I think he is the most suitable person for MC. He is also pitiful. He struggles his whole life and finally found his saviour (MC) but found out she was married to other by his own hands. Ofcouse he wants to fight for her. Such a good novel! Aaah, I'm in ecstasy!

For the first time I found Chinese characters with more than one layer of personality, who can make mistakes, learn and improve! The protagonist is really a strong character where her looks are just a bonus and it's her wisdom that inspires respect! And at the moment no male characters showed that troop of being extremely dominant, arrogant and therefore perfect.

The story is very well written and the translation is wonderful! Kudos to the translator who did the translation with such care that... more>> they even research to explain the political part of the novel!

Okay, first, let's have some context:

A woman who lived a terrible marriage with a man who was still in love with his dead wife. In the first chapter we already discover that thay never lived like husband and wife, she actually worked like a dog for his familly and at the end they framed her and sent her to exile to die alone. Her stepson came to find her and ask for forgiviness, because he realized too late she was trying to help him to be better all the time,... more>> so he explain to her all the lies her husband and familly told her. Actually, his dead wife is not dead, but pretend to be dead to impersonate a "twin sister" and became a concubine to the emperor, and her husband knew that, and even the baby she got pregnant with when the husband was drunk and forced her, was killed by him and his new concubine, the cousin of his "dead wife".

She was so tired that she didn't even care anymore.

And that's when she dies and come back to the past.

This time she decides to never marry him again, and, of course, she ends up marrying him (against her will!). But she will make sure the things are different now.

Now, about the FL:

She is amazing, strong mind and body, intelligent and so bold! At first she thinks that she must be immaculate, in a way that no dust would touch her, better than the rest, just like her familly told her to be. But after she met the ML, he gaves her enough confidence to be who she always wants to be, to talk want she wants, to do want she wants and not to be worried of the consequences. And we clearly see this change happening, when she abandons the beliefs and behaviours of the last life and decides to be her true self, because she knows he can protect her.

The ML (not the ex-husband) :

At first we hate him, because he is the responsible why she is back to ex-husband's house to marry him again, and when he realized the mistake he did, he regrets so much, and all I could think of was "serves you good". He deserved to suffer, like he made her when he forced her to marry the husband again. Of course, his regret is genuine, because he was fooled by the "dead wife" of the ex-husbnd, so he does everything to fix it, made some mistakes, but learn with them and get better every chapter. He's amazing for that and we start to love him just like she does, slowly and strongly.

The ex-husband:

I hated every chapter while she was married with him. He is weak, blind, and a terrible husband. And he fell for her so hard. He took his time realizing that he was the most lucky person in the world to be married with her, and we feel pity for him because we know that she could never love him. Even if he didnt do the same mistakes of his last live, even if he really tried to be a good husband (at least on his point of view, because I didnt agree), he is not enough. Her heart is completely cold to him. Since her baby died. He is pathetic and I wish he could find someone better at the end, because he really tried to be a better person after she was gone.

At first the story made me so mad and tired, I almost gave up in the middle, but I loved the moment they divorce and that's when the real story started for me. Thanks god I didn't give up! If you think it's difficult to continue, keep going until they divorce, I promisse the things get better! I loved it! One of my favorites, for sure. <<less

Translation

The translation is rough. Though you can still understand the story there are some parts where it can get a bit confusing, but if you backread on the previous sentences it's pretty easy to guess the context. The translator did a good job but they really need someone to proofread the novel.

Plot

The plot of this story is unique. This is my first time reading a chinese novel where the ML approves the FL to marry someone else. In a sense, it's kind of a slow burn, since the... more>> romance between the leads were introduced after the long backstory of the past life of the FL. The pacing of the story is long compared to the previous novels I've read before, but it's nothing too dragging. The plot was unique, controversial, even.

Characters

Now this is a bit debatable. I've seen a lot of comments debating about the character of the main leads. I like how Guan Suyi's (FL) character is realistic. Her thoughts and decision making highlights the dilemma that regular people would also go through when making decisions if they were in her situation. Her character is very alive in a sense that it's very realistic. She is smart, dignified, and competent but she's also aware of her shortcomings, and can be indecisive at times. All in all she's great character, you can see how she grows out of the shackles of her past life, and her decisions in the story is very reasonable if you look at the situation she's in.

Let's move on to Hunnar (ML). He is the most debatable thing in this story. He's not awful in terms of being a male lead, but he's not the best. Same as Guan Suyi, his character is very realistic.

Both of them made decisions that may or may not be questionable but I think that's what added depth to their character. They are humans, they make mistakes, but what's important is that they grow, and that they better themselves.

Mood

I enjoyed reading this, the philosophy part made me skip paragraphs but it's bearable. This is the kind of story where you might be uncomfortable with the decisions that the character take and the situation that they're in, but you understand where they're coming from and why they did what they did. <<less

This novel is a gem.

Guan Suyi is smart in a real sense, one of my favorite FL. Not long-winded without a reason, the face slapping is so refreshing, and she's undoubtedly smart.

The ML is black, red, and green all rolled into one. You will love him after knowing what he's been through and his willingness to change for Suyi is commendable.

No matter the main story or the extra, the ending is quite satisfying 😄😄

A strong FL and a morally corrupt ML make for a rather entertaining story. On account of the wordy schools of thought, it's a 4.5 but rounded up because of how entertaining the interactions are.

The MC, Guan Suyi, is a woman who has regressed back to her days of being a single woman. Immediately, she begins to plan how to protect her family and not end up back with the same husband she had before. The second part fails as she is almost immediately schemed against by several people but... more>> this time, she vows not to lead the same miserable life as before. And she certainly follows up on that vow by being an all-around badass.

The ML, Hunnar, is honestly my favorite part of this story. He falls first and then does everything in his power to win her over (which is a lot given that he is the Emperor). While the MC does develop affection for him, it's not until later in the story that they actually get together. Prior to that, the ML deals with a few schemers and then welcomes her as his Empress. He does have a harem but he has only ever spent time with the "most favoured" concubine and that has never been in a romantic way (for him anyway).

Spoiler

Prior to becoming the Emperor, he was nearly "assassinated" by a particular family (who were war profiteers selling to both sides) and "rescued" by a woman. She schemed and ended up making it look like he had taken her virtue so he prevented her from killing herself by taking her into his harem. Worst mistake of his life as this made him feel guilt-ridden and would often compensate her (and her former husband who she abandoned to climb to the rank of favoured concubine). It is actually because of this woman that he missed out on the MC becoming his concubine (and potential Empress) and had to work towards gaining her back.

[collapse]

This story involves a lot of Confucianism, Legalism and other schools of thought. Our MC is pretty badass about it all and manages to verbally beat down a lot of people using rational debates (I'm assuming this because I'm not familiar at all with the 100 Schools). We get to see the ML learn and actually become a better Emperor because of the interactions between him and the MC (or her father and grandfather).

We also get to see the rather black bellied methods the Emperor employs to hook up with the MC. His regret of sending her to her first marriage is genuine and his character development is quite fun to see. He never grows out of being a manipulative d*ck but he never does anything to wrong the MC as long as you don't count his method of marrying her.

Spoiler

He arranged for the concubine who "saved his life" to be sent back to her husband. Which resulted in the divorce between the MC and the First Husband (as the MC was too proud to be an equal wife and the former-concubine also immediately tried to suppress her). After that, he tries to woo the MC and eventually manages to get her to agree. Of course, he almost loses his mind when she nearly gets sent to torture-r*pe mountain (yup, that's a thing, it was a bandit camp where they planned on cutting off her limbs and ears as well as gouging out her eyes and removing her tongue) and their relationship is pretty solid after that.

[collapse]

The Husband, who was the MC's husband in the previous life as well as the first one in this life, is quite possibly almost as enjoyable as the ML for me. His indecisiveness and general s*upidity with his choices makes him fun to read. Especially when all of his decisions backfire so spectacularly.

Spoiler

He's super hung up about his deceased former wife. Often doing things for her that would put him in the Emperor's radar or just making life worse for the MC. It's not until later that he begins to realize that the MC is the best thing that could have happened to his family as she saves them from being executed with the former wife's maternal family. Plus she's been educating his kids into not being terrible wastes. However, this all ends up moot as the Emperor gives him back his former wife and he doesn't have much of a choice.

[collapse]

Then there are the antagonists who are hilarious in their ineffectiveness. There are the father-daughter pair of Confucius scholars who either want to step on the MC's family to get ahead or come up with a set of incredibly strict ideals for women. The Empress Dowager who orchestrates everything in the back of the harem against the Emperor. And finally, the "most favoured" Concubine who is the one who set up the MC to be married to the same man as she was in herfirst life.

Spoiler

The scholar father ends up never gaining the traction he had in the previous life as the MC will not allow him to use her grandfather as a stepping stone like he did before. In fact, she downright targets everything this guy does (including the stuff that does not use her grandfather).

The scholar's daughter doesn't end up as Empress and the MC refutes her essay about the rules for women. Even makes it clear that the ideas are dangerous and s*upid if compared from the nobles to the poor.

The Empress Dowager tries to make a plan to send the nephew princes out of the palace so that she could use them to take over the throne later. Unfortunately, the other princes' mothers have bad intentions and child mu*der happens off-screen. She eventually collapses as all her planning has failed. Including giving the Emperor a complex about his mother's death and his birth.

And the favoured Concubine isn't favoured at all but she does get sent back to her husband.

The story is a bit different than the usual ancient China stories but it's rather fun. Especially with an ML who reacts more by instinct and the "do onto others as they have done onto you" kind of mentality. Plus there is an alternate story at the end which gives a small glimpse four years into the future but of a life where the ML did not have the chance to learn from the MC and her family.

Spoiler

It follows the same beats as the MC's first life but she never became pregnant or died. Instead, she met the ML after her husband gained the memories of the main story's life. The Husband wanted to turn things around and was willing to spend a lifetime of trying to gain her affection but things played out fairly the same as the main story. His former wife schemed against the MC but ended up bringing her to the attention of the ML.

From there, the two interact more. The MC is a much softer person but is still determined while the ML is harsher, almost more beast like in his mannerisms. The MC enters the palace as a concubine but eventually becomes Empress after giving birth to two children for the ML. The prince nephews still die but there is more fighting among the ML's harem this time around which eventually ends with the first Empress being deposed (her brother is responsible for a lot of deaths that her father helped cover up), one concubine sent to the cold palace indefinitely and the third given silk to hang herself.

While the MC and ML end up in fairly the same position as the original story, it's a bit of a harsher happy ending.
